Neil Peart was in a local band and left to audition for Rush-another seasoned drummer took his chair-but left to tour - ended up with me- a jazz drummer who's closest brush with rock was Mitch Mitchell. Neil came by the bar one night and said to me "you sure stay on that ride". He was a rock drummer-king of the hi-hat and toms and unbelievable snare technique- but cymbals were something he hadn't dove into yet- he made up for it lol.
Your channel is so underrated!!!
Gavin Harrison is the absolute best at coming up with override ride cymbal patterns.
I appreciate how Neil made it a signature to play interesting ride patterns, it felt like it was all straight eights until him ish. It really opened up the vocabulary.
When Bernard gets going on the Bell it’s always incredible 😮
Absolutely love Jeff Porcaro on I'll Be Over You live at Montreaux Jazz Festival. His pocket is so damn deep and ride pattern is nice and pronounced. And of course, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You with Vinnie. Nuff said.
He played that ending part different from the recording, with the bell on the &s. Beautiful!
I'm going to pitch If I Ever Lose My Faith In You to my cover band. We have Rosanna, but if I can get Jeff, Vinnie, and Phil Gould with Something About You (Level 42), I'll have three of my all time favorited drummer songs in the set!
Rush - YYZ - Chorus section, or Subdivisions verse sections.
That ride work is phenomenal.
Also in La Villa Strangiato, The Spirit of Radio, Between the Wheels ...
Don't sleep on "Far Cry"
I LOVE RUSH
Neil Peart’s iconic pattern is awesome in all the applications across the years , my favey is the chorus section of “cold fire” on the counterparts album….it’s kicked up in tempo but so clean , a beauty .
Great episode!
One of the best "riders" is one of my favorites...Mr Stewart Copeland, who possesses a great musically ride feel...but to name a song I would say synchronisity II
Serendipitous! I just was done watching a Vinnie solo. Clicked on what's new and " learn to play the ride like vinnie"...thankyou for this video!!
Love me some 'straight' spangalang and reverse spangalang w/bell on the offbeats. Overriding also cool... You have Neil in the thumbnail, but nothing about his iconic ride pattern?! Not that I need it, I was just surprised you have him 'featured', then other than a passing clip, nothing further...
Hey Nate!.....this was an awesome lesson....am enjoying override very much. thanks for that. Love this channel!
A very nice lesson. Thank you very much. Bill.
I made it in one of your videos! I’m the guy with the argyle sweater in the audience of the Zack grooves clip lmao!
Overriding is sexy. This 2 over 3, 3 over 4, or 4 over 5 stuff.
And... I recently recognized that Simon Phillips is using the China bow for ride patterns. That's sounds cool!
Overriding nah.....Polyrhythmic, I think.
Thank you for making this man!
Interesting use of 1/4 note ride: Grady Tate, “Killer Joe”, on Quincy Jones’ “Walking In Space”… on the title track, too, and it sounds great! He also played them on “Watch What Happens”, Lena Horne… late ‘60’s.
Extremely cool ride cymbal pattern on Sunflower by Paul Weller played by the fabulous Steve White, which he freely admits is his take to on “The King Kong Beat” played by David Garribaldi.
Override is the sweetest ride.
i am loving these new exaggerated confused faces/gestures you’ll do to perform lack of experience on said subject lmaooo
Good stuff. thx
Neil’s work on Everyday Glory (counterparts) is one of my favorites.
Bello/Magnifico.😭👑👑👑👑👑👑
Hmmm. Well my vintage Paiste 602 is the only collector-friendly piece of percush I’ver ever owned. Until I altered its position/hang & started buggering about with Walk The Dog (AKA Spangalang) & other jazzier stuff it was also least liked and used.
Now we’re great friends and it’s(not inconsiderable) surface area & value are well justified.
Nice video sir. What meinhl ride are u using? Is it a tradition ride by any chance?
Byzance extra dry medium thin, aka “the Spaven”
Vinnie on Heavy Resin by Karizma, in 11/8, casually overriding groups of 3 on the ride bell 🤯
Gracias
Regarding ride cymbal work I recently checked out is Seven Steps to Heaven with Vinnie starting at 0:50. OMG
Seven days you mean?
@@8020drummer No :). This one: ua-cam.com/video/9RhUP1_wVkk/v-deo.html
@@8020drummerNo. Vinnie with Cunliff and Patitucci.
Fave to play that I wrote?
The "Chapa Shuffle" triplets on the double kick, and the bell on the last two of every triplet. Snare on 2&4.
Honesty it's still a challenge for me because I'm lazy and don't work on it enough.
Here it is flams and all... 😂 (Even has a ascending / descending fill for ya, Nate!)

Favorite to listen / play along to?
That's tough. I grew up on hair metal, and all those drummers were riding 8th nothes with the quarters on the bell.
Tico Torres from Bon Jovi has some KILLER ride patterns.
Ah, got it!!
Favorite to listen / play along to is Symbolic by Death.
Gene Hoglan's double riding was insane!
So we're getting nintendo music passed the filter now in the background? lol
Nate, your overlays to other videos aren't there. Is that something you can add after posting the vid?
They are! Maybe try watching on a different device?
@@8020drummer Hmmm... Tried it two other devices. Talking about mid-vid e.g. 4:00 where you point...
@@Armakk hmmmm very mysterious. Just double checked from the cards dashboard, and sure enough there's a card there at 4:10. Also tried it from my iphone and it was popping up too 🤔
@@8020drummer Huh really weird. Nothing is there on my new Mac mini, iPad, or PowerBook. Well glad it’s working for you. Sorry I can’t help more.

Funny - I see the ride as the most nuanced and diverse instrument in the drum set.
Neil Pearts ride pattern is often known as "The Canadian Shuffle".
If your arms get tired maybe place ride lower. I don’t get that ride at ceiling’s heigh.
Because you’re not playing the bell 100% of the time and the high cymbal placement allows a more relaxed arm angle when ur playing the flat part
How can I make my snare sound like yours? 😈
When you have a 4 piece kit why is the ride so high and far away, you have given up a tom so use that space, make life easy.
My roommate’s kit. If it were mine I’d put an extra tom.
