The singer's name is James Kennan Maynard. He also is in Pucifer, and A Perfect Circle.
One half of The Pot's double meaning is based on the saying about "the pot calling the kettle black."
Don't watch the music videos for your initial reaction. They're weird and interesting but way too distracting. Most reactors spend so much time trying to figure out what's going on in the video that they miss the wonder and beauty of the music.
Schism and 46&2 are my favorite Tool songs. I’ve got a bachelors in psych and oddly enough I went into the abnormal portion of psychology and the theories in those two songs are the building blocks of how we learn to be who we are. A schism is a split or division between strongly opposed sections or parties, caused by differences in opinion or belief.
TOOL's lyrics and their videos have only one thing in common. They are both based on the sonic impressions of the lyricist: Maynard James Keenan and the guitarist: Adam Jones (a former Hollywood special effects artist who does TOOL's videos). Both of these guys are either writing lyrics or making videos based off of their personal impressions of the music. The lyrics don't exactly go with the videos although, they both express a sort of hellish nightmare in their own right (or way). I hope this helps. Btw, Adam Jones worked on at least one of the Jurassic Park films and Terminator 2.
My favorite Tool song is "Right in Two"
Gotta love idiot chats. This came out in 94? Yeah, ok. Did anyone even bring up the fact that the 'pot calling the kettle black' is a popular metaphor, RIPE with double meaning, and the basis of this entire song?
The pot talks about the hypocrisy of lawyers and judges who punish you for partaking in smoking weed, then go home and partake themselves.
Seeing your live comment section reacting as I would have back in the 90's 2000's when I first saw it.. I love it. Tool will suck you in if you let it. Enjoy the ride, spiral out etc.
The Pot or Right in Two would be my recommendation for a first listen. If you haven’t heard Right in Two yet, do that next. Then you should go back through their early albums. They grew up playing with Rage Against the Machine, who you should also know.
This song is about the legal battle Tool went through with their record label. Welcome to Tool Army, my guy!
My two favorite Tool song! I love all Toll, but these two are different universe
Also, Maynard James Keenan fronts 2 other bands: A Perfect Circle and his own music project: Puscifer. M.J.K. has an amazingly convincing style range. Maynard also is a hands-on winegrower in Arizona: Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards.
Tool - The Grudge.... while you're at it, might as well just hit play on the Lateralus album and let it roll. One of the few perfect albums front to back. Masterpiece.
Tool is the best ❤my fave band since 93, ya I'm freaking old 😅
Same here bro
Buckle up buddy, your in for one hell of a ride!
FYI, this album came out in 2006, yes it's a double entendre, The saying The Pot calling the Kettle Black, and a weed reference - but ultimately this song is about hypocrisy
Pretty sure Adam Jones does all their videos. He's a special effects artist by trade, was working on the first Jurassic park when Tool signed and started touring.
I am a 55year old, Caucasian, Canadian....The Pot Kicks Ass
I like how the word "high" has multiple meanings here that all relate to the song's message about the hypocrisy in how the law treats drugs/drug users:
1. "High & mighty", which is a common American phrase meaning that someone has positioned themselves in an unearned place of authority or judgment
2. "Out of your mind", referring to how people might say "are you high?" to someone when they suggest or do something completely unreasonable/crazy
3. Literally high on drugs
It's not really about drugs. It's just government hypocrisy in general.
The pot calling the kettle blwck
I would’ve rather been there for Tool in the beginning than be born after 1994. Which I was, thankfully saw them first in 1993 Lalapalooza.
A lot of songs from the schizim almbum are also amazing if you want to check them out expecially since you liked thier pot song
Schism's lyrics are some of TOOL's most explicit and direct. There's not much to interpret or understand: it's about how relationships deteriorate and how people can drift apart until they completely separate unless communication is strengthened. As someone else already told you, it's best not to watch TOOL's videos at least at first. They don't add much to the song and risk being distracting (in fact you didn't get the point of the first one even though it was explicit, while you immediately understood the second one which was much more complex). Lyric videos are much better.
Someone should request Tool's Sober, the live version.
I've read that Tool was close to splitting up when Maynard wrote this for the band. I think that's the inspiration as it were.
Not a synth but Justin's bass
The pot is not underrated or not known. Tool doesn't have a bad song and I don't have a favorite song, but it's one I listen to the least. However , when i first got into them it was easy for me to digest and i listened to it all the time. And that says a lot because it's a better song than most bands very best!!
- "well, then youdothemath"
'I did'.
giggle...
you all have the interwebs we had the liner notes and the library.
Definitely consider doing a reaction to Right in Two and also Vicarious
More TOOL!
"Ænima"
"Eulogy"
"Lateralus"
Yes this had stabs/bars about government and hypocrites in general. And whoever is turning him to a Tool Army member good Job. I Think it may be time to put him onto Tool Pneuma Danny Carey drum cam video!!???!!
Just wait until you watch the Prison Sex music video
God, I miss the 90´s videocplis.
Good one!
Welcome, fellow traveler, to the TθθL Army😌🙏
Also, check out Lateralus. You're welcome.
u should check descending by them. i think they worked that song for 5 years
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Corporal OGT93 reporting for doodie
Sonic Exellence
Tool Army yo
As someone else has mentioned, with tool, you never want to watch the video on the first listen. The videos generally have nothing to really do with the songs, and it distracts from the art of the music. Also, Vicarious or 46&2 wold be good ones to react to.
🤘🏻🌀
You didn't do both of these months ago with your TOOL journey?
Try THE GRUDGE man... its fire
There so many worse pictures deliverded these days as than an old Tool video would even odd you?!
I think you might gravitate more to their earlier stuff but it won't get as many views aside from Sober as songs from subsequent albums. I'd recommend Bottom or the title track Undertow but all are good. ✌️
Kangaroo court
Do 46 and 2 by Tool next please!
Jump in with both feet.....Thank me later.....
Www, you astonishingly bad at this.
Skip the videos on first listen. they are great but distract from the music/lyrics
and yeah Maynard is a great vocalist and lyricist
and the band is ridiculously talented
spiral out
