      What do you call freedom? Please, describe me freedom. How much freedom do you want? People are using these cliché words 'freedom' and 'democracy' without thinking that it is not something universally good. One country democracy is another country oppression.

      "Yes, I don't know who you represent, so I'm not sure if you're trustworthy" is also another line. Like, it shouldn't matter who anyone represents in this kind of matter. Like it should be "I don't want to answer that", and not "I'm not allowed to answer that".

      Whatever that would have meant, the translation has nothing to do with what was said.

      Eh Lukashenko is kind of a pain in Putin's ass tbh, he refused to send troops into Ukraine and has not fulfilled integrating Belarus economically into Russia like he wanted. There doesn't seem to be any love there.

Putin knows this and does not press him too much because he risks Lukasenko would fall and he does not have enough force available to control the situation. The main point is Lukasenko was maneuvered into this position its not his choice and he suresly does not fell comfort there

    I live in Belarus. It is really THAT BAD here right now. Level of repressions is mindblowing. If you say something they dpn't like, they will easily find and punish you 100%, not even 99.9%.

      Here in Britain, if you are active in informing the population, for example a Alex Jones, you will go on a watch list, face intimidation by the security state, be black listed from working in many circles.
      How they control the population, is through fake democracy by making the people think they have a say.

In the U.K. we have people with megaphones and placards protesting against many things right next to 10 Downing Street day in day out. It’s very rare they get arrested and non of them have ever fallen out of windows not long after!

And I remember protesters being beaten up by police, but I don't remember if actually something changed after protests. Maybe you can give me some specific examples when it helped?

      Cops ran sirens at night in MPLS summer of 2020 to keep people from sleeping and as intimidation tactic. No MPLS police live in the city.
      Cop City Atlanta is f'd.
      Seattle cops are awful. LA cops are awful. Legal murder happens every day. White supremacists have infiltrated all levels of law enforcement.

    At least the people of Belarus still believe in democracy. Everyone saw the huge protests in 2020 after Lukashenko was "reelected", they are still fighting. But as long as Russia exists, every protest will be beaten down violently.

      Lukashenko arrived in power in 1994, 6 years before Putin. He has been beating on protesters and rigging elections long before Putin. In 2020, it was belarussian cops doing the beating, not russian.
      Post-soviet autocratic regimes have their own agency, despite Russia's influence.

      Belarus law enforcement is much more brutal than russian though. I doubt that even if Putin and his regime go down, Belarusians will overthrow Lukashenko without external help. They are unarmed and (currently) disorganised due to all the leaders being in jail

      It's both sad and a bit funny how none of these hypothetical questions, psychological techniques, etc in the interviews seem to work, no matter how he tries to spin them lol. You really get nowhere talking to people living in dictatorships or asking them for their opinions in attempts of trying to help the situation, unfortunately, except for the ones who are brave enough to say what they think

    As far as I can see, repression is likely even worse in Belarus, yet the people seem more engaged and conscious about the situation (despite often refusing to answer). I feel like in Russian interviews people often find excuses not to respond. Here they blatantly say that they cannot speak, but it looks like they would have something to say.

Russia already had an coupe attempt, even without people beeing on the streets in masses. When things get hectic in belarus or russia you don't knwo what will happen.       @@thegreen9728 You are mistaken. Asking questions can get in trouble only the one who asks. Giving answers can evtl. get them in trouble if they are not cautious enough. But they really are. They (almost all) deliver smart answers so there is no way someone can get in trouble if they'd be arrested and questioned.
      There is always possibility of being beaten up to death in some dark alley by "unknown" perpetrators. But I really doubt someone would do it.

      Life here is not a show about lawyers, where you will be acquitted for a "smart answers". In our countries, if they take an interest in you and come to visit you, it's not to ask questions. They'll just beat a confession and apology out of you on camera and then put it on the internet so others won't do the same. That's how fear is cultivated.
      Moreover, this practice began in Belarus in 2020. And now it is being successfully copied by their russian colleagues. We call it Belarusization of Russia :)

    Belarus is closer to real freedom than one might think, but some struggle is still necessary. They have many neighbors whose struggle was successful.

      That's the thing: they fear the struggle because they saw in the Ukrainian example what it takes to be free. They DON'T WANT to pay that price for their freedom. They openly said this in 2020 when they got a chance. If only someone else did that for them.

    Very interesting questions and the inability to answer in many cases is rather telling . Keep up the good work you all are doing ...it truly helps others around the world SEE the circumstances as they are. The insight is very valuable. There is something upcoming that may help people understand how significant change can happen without bloodshed or revolution involving violence.

      Indeed, most rulers don't give a crap about people, even in West EU.
      But if i go out in a crowded market place in France with cops and people and shout "MACRON SUCKS, I WISH HIM A FLASH CANCER!!", i won't get shot or arrested and attacked for a "lèse-majesté" crime, and many people with actually loudly cheer on that. Not that it'll change anything. But that's the point. It WON'T CHANGE ANYTHING.
      And that's how you know if you still have some kind of freedom and right to not be a simple minded robot in your country or not.

    Are we watching people from Belarus at the verge of losing all hope in free speech and democracy and any vestiges of freedom? Or, are we to hold on to the little hope they themselves cling to as proof of the arc of history bending towards Justice?

      The situation is extremely difficult right now. People have no rights. It is much more difficult because of the fact that the West has thrown Belarus at Russia's mercy, and there is no decisiveness in their actions.

    As a Canadian looking in, I always love to hear Belarusians speak. They are not as lost as the Russian people, and I believe they have a similar spirit to the west. I know that they are under a very difficult situation with Putin and Lukashenko.

      @@SiarheiSiamashka People are constantly doing something, I already talked about “The Way Home”, which gathers every Saturday, they held negotiations with both Putin and Nadezhdin, there were rallies in 2021, more than 3 million people came to them all over Russia, in all cities , imagine, nothing happened, we try every day, but instead of support, Russians receive insults, where they are told “you are not trying enough”

      Everyone in Belarus knows what a criminal state is. Asking for an opinion in Belarus today is like asking for an opinion in Nazi Germany. Nobody will speak their thoughts openly. Look at how many people went out in 2020, the scale of repression now, and you will understand everything. Belarusians are being gagged.

    It is impossible to break a dictatorship until it happens, like in Poland (starting in 1980) in 1989, Eastern Germany in 1989 or in Egypt, Libya or Tunesia in 2010/2011. Some end more or less peaceful and some in a civil war.

    Belarus... unlike Russia/Muscovy will eventually be free... Russia cannot ever be free of itself...and would be best for the world if it disappeared from having any influence anywhere anymore ...a tragedy actually...not a great nation...never was .. Belarus having spent most of its history outside of its control still has the opportunity for another path ..

    It´s interesting to check that despite having a government that is even more authoritarian than in Russia and that has a policy of Soviet nostalgia that is even more entrenched than that of the Russian gov. you still tend to hear less nonsense and bullshit in your interviews with Belarusians than with Russians.

      they're chronically scared to go that route. They'd rather choose dictatorship over revolution.
      They got a chance in 2020, and the opposition openly refused to repeat what Ukrainians did in their country. Some of their own people actually joked about it and said "they're peaceful nation and won't start a violent resistance".
      Well, you don't overthrow a dictatorship by peacefully protesting. So, I guess, what they have today is their own choice. They deserve what they got.

    Некоторые украинцы считаю, что они боролись с диктатором Януковичем и победили его, но в результате получили ещё большую диктатуру и страна фактически потеряла независимость. Им запрещено покидать свою страну, больше чем за 30 лет "независимости" в стране полностью уничтожены целые отрасли промышленности, например авиастроение, судостроение, космическая отрасль, автомобилестроение и другие. Страна вся в долгах и живет за счет подачек. Из-за безработицы вынуждены нелегально бежать из страны или идти воевать за интересы других стран.

      You are ignoring a big elephant in the room. Russia kept covertly and overtly sabotaging Ukraine all these years even before the full scale invasion. Now imagine an alternative reality with a peaceful Russia, where it keeps its tentacles away from Ukraine and minds its own business.     The old fellow in the end shows the widom of his years. As it stands most of us are in the same boat.
    The only possible exception that comes to mind is the new Argentinian ruler. Time will tell if he becomes corrupt, but for now he is bright and shiney like a new penny.

    Belarus like 35 years ago others could only start a revolution if Russia would not interfere like the USSR didn’t in 1989. but the man is right. Democracy is in decline all around the world. Rich rulers come to power very often by election cause democracies failed with globalization and neoliberalism. Not that it would get any better necessarily but they want to believe that one ruler can decide faster and ruthless to peoples benefit… the opposite is happening or just few very very very rich and the silent majority in utter poverty.
