    Remember that those larger trees can be milled and used for some of your renovations coming up like the two out buildings. This will save you some money for lumber and you will be able to reuse those trees with a new story. I bet there,s a lot of good lumber there. I think I heard hickory, walnut, etc. They don’t have to leave the property.

      it costs money to do that by the way. And that also takes much time. Those trees need to dry out and age before milling in most cases. But good idea.

    • @florentinalily
      @florentinalily 2 роки тому +17

      @@InsideKarensHead yep. We did the figures for milling or buying off the shelf/ from a scierie as opposed to paying our tree surgeon to mill. Timber is so expensive; it was much cheaper for us to pay him to Mill the timber (fresh incidentally) for the floorboards and joists in our barns - than it was to buy. And the timber is being kept on the property. There is something quite special about that.

    A good wind storm takes out the weakest trees and strengthens the rest, new roots develop after a good shaking. I've had older trees that had been in decline revive after storms, the roots began to reach out again and now they're putting on new branches on where they had been bare for decades.

      Of course, some windstorms take out even the healthiest trees. I lost a half dozen 70 year old trees from an E1 tornado about two months ago. $13K to clean them up. They were beautiful, but they don’t last forever. Some planted at the same time are still fine, tho.

    It’s always sad and a shock when a storm rearranges the woods so radically, but I agree with Philip: this might just make looking after the woodlands properly easier, and it’s clear it’s currently far too dense. Could you perhaps try to use some of those straight hardwood timbers for construction or flooring? Beech wood is a beautiful hardwood for furniture and construction, for example. So maybe this can turn into another silver lining. Maybe to be used for restoring the various barns.

    I would strongly suggest 5:00 that in order to save the top of that very old tree to cut the trunk off below the fracture/break and then cover the open wound, and especially where the bark joins the living wood, with tar or pitch to keep it from rotting and to keep bugs out of the wound. Tar/pitch is a natural insecticide, antibacterial, and antifungal.

    So after binge watching this channel for the last 2 days, I'm sold and have subscribed, not yet ready for the patron thing, but give me time .. You two have a unique channel like no other, and it's a pleasure to experience your prospective on remodel/refurbish/renovate..
    Side Note - From a Chef's perspective ... When designing a kitchen make your appliances as close to a triangular form as possible (stove/oven, refrig, sink) make it "flow" with ease and accessibility...
    Keep Doing What Your Doing .. Because What You Are Doing Is Nothing Short Of Amazing

    I'm really glad your family is alright and am relieved that there wasn't any deaths in your region. The way some of those trees fell looks like a twist pattern to them, at least on camara. 170km winds are the equivalent to a EF 1 tornado here in the states. I'm sorry about the loss of your trees. Especially the one your girls played in.

    I feel for you it is sad when such old trees are brought down by wind. Although we only lost one massive Manitoba Maple tree when a tornado like wind swirled around our home in June, it was a four trunked tree three of the four filled our back garden, between the garage and the old wooden shed. It was sad to see your loss on a much bigger scale and I cried in my heart for you. Our last trunk was left standing and we were told it would grow back as he cut the whole crown of what was left down. It is growing back. As Philip said they needed thinning out and new growth will come it just takes time.

    So sorry to see all the downed trees. The good thing is your home is okay and you and your family are safe. The trees even thrown down can be salvaged to firewood probably. You are so lucky only those tiles were loose and fell and no damage to your vehicles or windows. All the best and hopefully some people can volunteer to help you and your father will arrive.

    Anna and Phillip I am so sorry for you tree damage. Yes we are so thankful that you and your chateau is ok. I had a tree come down on our house and it just missed hitting my bedroom where my husband and I were in bed. It hit the only safe place on our roof that was the strongest and not too much damage. The Good Lord was watching out for us and with you and your family. So happy that your dad is coming to help you. Blessing from BC 🇨🇦

    The main thing Philip and Anna is that you and your family are safe above all, it is these challenging times that you test your human fortitude and you fight on. You both have done so much work on the château to make it look like the way it does, and I watch your vlog for this very reason, you both have restored a run down château and turned it into a beautiful home for your family. You both have overcome so many problems while restoring the château ,and you both have prevailed, along with making the château a beautiful place to live . So keep your chin up ,and march on as the Brits say Lol.🤙🏼🥰

    The hydrangeas will come back. Plunge the broken branches into the soil and water well. They may actually develop roots and survive. If you peg their branches to the ground they root on their own. But, you need an arborist to assess damaged trees and remove those suspended branches and trees to large for you to remove yourselves.

    So sorry to see the damage caused by the storm. Hopefully you can save large sections of the trees and after they've aged, have them milled into lumber and create something beautiful for the grounds. I had a beautiful walnut box made out of a felled walnut tree in a client's yard. I think of them every time I see it.

    it always breaks my heart when a tree's life comes to an end. Whether by mother nature or other means. trees bring us so much joy, protection and history. I am sad for you and the girls. I suppose the silver lining is the opportunity for new growth, which will take some time. Good luck with all the sorting. Maybe some large trunks could be used by local artisans to build furniture, walking sticks, etc.

    We had a similar situation just a year ago, but it was a tornado. It destroyed a 70-year-old oak tree 3 meters from the house, most of the tree-sized branches from it landed on the house and had to be removed by a professional with a crane. Fortunately, there was minimal damage. The driveway was blocked by 9 or 10 trees and we were without power for 49 hours. I'm glad both of you and the kids were not injured and fortunately, the chateau had no damage. It's never fun or easy to deal with the cleanup, but at least all of you are ok. Mark

    Watching this gave me hives. Sorry about the damage and all the work this'll pile up on your plate. Now for the important part: PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT'S GOOD, BE CAREFUL! There's few things as dangerous as storm damage in a wooded area. Fallen trunks might have immense tension in them and when you cut around with a chainsaw, it'll release the tension and might kick the chainsaw.... you get the picture. Same for trunks lying on other trunks. Cut down the top one and the sudden weight reduction might set things in motion. And those broken branches hanging in the trees? We call them Witwenmacher. I'll let Phillip translate this for Anna. That way he can't tell her it's all fine. Be careful. Seriously. Don't crawl around, wear protection, inspect the bigger picture before you do anything and then decide if it's something you can do. Dragging a few loose branches to the shredder is one thing. Starting chainsaw work on unstable targets is something else!

      We call them the same thing in English. I was a danger tree assessor for wildfire fighting in BC for nearly a decade. That forest is very dangerous now. You should enlist the help of a certified tree surgeon to deal with the broken trees and get them to a point where it's safe to work there to cut everything into firewood.

      All very good advice. At one point I helped a landscaper friend in his business when he was overloaded. At one property, a day after a big windstorm, I was chipping a stump in front as he cleared fallen branches in back. He suddenly came to me white as a sheet. A huge tree had come down just next to him. Perfectly still, beautiful day. It obviously had weakened in the storm and maybe also the soil was sodden. Will never forget that.

      @dttttt 3 роки тому +10

      Some things are better for professional arborists and tree surgeons, even if you have the equipment. When we tried to cut a 24 foot long willow tree limb -- it was just a limb!! Not even the big trunk, BIG TREE -- we borrowed a neighbor's chainsaw and it got stuck really easy because as you cut a wedge, the pressure in the tree closed the wedge and clamped down on the chainsaw. We didn't have any experience with how the tree and wood will respond to everything we did, lots of unexpected and potentially dangerous things happened. We called our arborist to take care of it. Another time we simply cut a root that was wrapped around the base of a tree. The pressure it released when we cut through it made a huge noise and thankfully, the root didn't swing out and hit us while we held a chainsaw. "Tension" as said above is right!! I now have huge respect and awe for the power of trees.

    The house I live in here in Northern NJ backs up to a state park. I love the trees immensely, but it is scary during storms because you never know when one could fall and hit the house.
