Or rather the vocal minority; At least be glad they are not as bad as the vocal minority of the Sonic fanbase, and that Greg Farshtey doesn't get nearly as much backlash from the Bionicle VM as Ian Flynn does from the Sonic VM.

Eh, I think the winner works great in a story sense. It LOOKS like a prototype of a Toa Mata. Primitive next to them the same way they are next to the more streamlined Metru. That’s extremely charming to me. I don’t know what would’ve made more sense.
Only Onua is a hunchback, giving that to Helryx is stupid and the moc's greatest failing. The rest of it is okay at best, don't see how it looks like a prototype Mata at all and it's not a great choice imo. Art that removed the hunch with the different mask is cool though.
@@CallanLoF Turaga Whenua:...Am I a joke to you? but in all seriousness you could make the argument the hunch was created to give the air of an aged warrior who's barely living but is more than ready to survive another day. Overall the Moc is just the basis of the artwork that did Helryx a great justice.
Yeah I'm gonna have to side with Callan. The artwork for canonized Toa Helryx looks way better.
@@toalorikan626 Fair enough. Also Turaga Whenua, true, but Toa Whenua isn't hunched so my comment mostly rings true. Kongu Mahri gets one which is weird but Onua's the only one where it's kinda synonymous with his stature generally speaking, so I disagree with portraying Helryx with one regardless of the potential "ancient" intentions.
CallanLoF my point is, most of the other entries weren’t very compelling to me. They were sleek, they were intricate and elaborate and ornate... which to me is pretty droll. They were basically Inika builds, mostly. This one stood out. It had character and charm and a sense of history to it. The value of being able to pick a character out from a crowd by shape alone can’t be overstated, and this thing... it just makes me ask questions. It makes me want to know more about this mysterious figure. Most of the more streamlined ones, I feel like I already get a sense of what they’re about. I guess most of this rambling is just informed by my own priorities as a writer/storyteller.
Bionicle fans at the moment
I’m pretty happy with the end results. The moc looked pretty bad but the art seems to have fixed it, especially with the new mask. I’m hoping that now that they’ve had to experience all the crap with this first contest, they’ll know how to run the next one much more efficiently
I'm sure they will, sometimes you gotta learn the hard way but Internet Historian's Poll video would've made a nice watch ahead of this contest ha ha.
CallanLoF Funnily enough Elijah pointed out that video directly and mentioned it is among other things being considered for the next poll. Which sounds good to me!
I actually didn't see what the winner was until now, but now that I've seen it, I think its kinda decent, but could have been a bit better
Take a look at the Helryx page on the BIONICLE wiki. It shows the comic version of Helryx, even making adjustments to certain parts such as the mask so it didn't look like the Kanohi Pakari.
I disagree; the winner is much better than the runner up.
I actually like the simplicity of the winner. I just don’t think it makes much sense for the first toa to be all huge and complicated. I like the more bare bones aesthetic it has while still being different..........I guess just like simpler Mocs better ngl and it makes more sense to me at least
Don't mind the simplicity, but it needs to look good and that hunch is awful. Would much prefer a detailed and aesthetically-pleasing moc over something simple and bad like this one. Simple and good could work, but in my opinion, this ain't it chief.
Well I honestly like how it looks and I don’t mind the hunch. But I guess everyone has their own opinion
@@CallanLoF she was the first, she is old, i makes sense, plus if one small factor of the design makes you think its the spawn of karzahni that make's you out to be kind of a asshole.

I created a new Rahi for my Matoran MOC of Nuparu Inika to ride around on and I could tie that into a better origin of the Toa if I wanted to.
I like Helryx's hunch. You don't have to, and I totally understand that. If I could make a case, however, I would like to posit that, perhaps, Bionicle should be a franchise of more varying statures and untraditional torso builds. I don't prefer my Bionicle figures to strictly adhere to humanistic qualities, even our Toa. These beings are construction-based sets first, there should be an otherworldliness to their posture and build. There should be fun interpretations to how these figures understand body language in a universe where you literally construct it.
Of course I understand that, to us, a hunch isn't very imposing and actually translates as a submissive or nonthreatening stature. So yeah, it doesn't 100% land for everyone. It's your personal preference and it's valid.
My personal favorite thing about the hunch is that, normally, that sort of nontraditional build isn't given to female figures within the Bionicle canon. MOCists really tend to wanna make sure you know their MOC is female, so the build is usually... non-experimental. Bionicle females should not have to adhere to strict standards of body types to display their "femininity", especially when sex is not the type of biology Bionicle explores.
Good breakdown and I agree with your fundamentals, there should be a lot of creative freedom with BIONICLE figures diverging from human anatomy. I just don't think a hunch is suited for Helryx and even if it could work, I don't think the winning moc did that well at all.

Yeahhhh... still sticking to my guns on this. We weren’t going anywhere new and the burst of creativity from these contests has been amazing to watch. I get that you and TTV don’t see eye to eye though, and I do wonder if that impacts your perspective more than the contest itself.
You can wonder, but I don't like most of Greg's post 2007 contributions either, so I'm honestly telling you it's these annoying additions to canon that bother me as opposed to who's running it. And any beef with them aside, they did a really bad job moderating these polls while some of their members publicly supported the entry that won in the end. They've done more to hurt their optics in the community than I ever have.
@@CallanLoF Fair enough. There were certainly mistakes made. I do not think, however, that everyone has turned on them solely based on this contest - plenty of folks are still optimistic. I think there is a significant portion of the community that is excited to have building challenges again, and honestly, canon can be whatever folks want anyway since head canon is alive and well in the Biotuber community. On this note, I was kind of hoping to see a submission from you, given that I think you are an amazing MOCist and it would be cool to see an Artakha or Toa Hagah in your style. The Canon issue you bring it is very valid though and I understand why that may factor into why you would not want to participate in this contest. Would you ever consider making your own version of some of these characters on your channel?

I didn't enter because I didn't think I had to skill to compete with some of the masters who'd entered. I never saw the winner until now and seeing them feels like a slap in the face that such a simple if somewhat well designed moc is what won.

The winner is actually pretty nice. The winning moc that I don't like, however, is the artakha one. It's pretty cool but for me it looks very awkward

The winner definitely wasn’t my favorite entry but it’s grown on me.
I like the helryx design. Altho the build itself was flimsly and lacked poseability. You seem to hate the hunch of the figure which I dont entirely understand.
I can understand the want for a better figure but without this design winning I dont think we'd ever get the bukkey version of helryx which is my favorite moc. It keeps all the elements I liked about the original while making it more sturdy, poseable and removes the hunch which Im sure you'd appreciate

Why is Bali purple ?
I don't hate the winner, but I don't love it either. I personally feel there were dozens of others that captured the ancient look while still being sleeker. I can see where the nostalgia kind of comes in for the winning MOC, but I tend to fall on the form over function or sometimes original isn't better side of things. I appreciate the contests, but hope future ones like Artahka are more...impressive. Also, gotta say, not a fan of the goofy hose Helryx, but I don't tend to like goofy looking MOCs in general, especially for serious characters like this. (Case in point, I hate the LEGO Batman movie)
I like the winning entry. My only wish was she had some white accent colors to denote her age and wisdom, y'know like the faded white and blue on Toa Ignika Hahli.
I'm one of those people who only counts official LEGO produced media and sets as "canon".

Gotta hard disagree here, I thought the Helryx winner was awesome. It looks like an ACTUAL set, unlike Artakha (even though he still does look great!)
Looking like a set is a bad metric for judgment, I'd never want a canon moc to look like Pridak. She has a hunch for no reason and doesn't even look like a Toa Mata if there's a classic set logic of styling her that way. Only reason why it won is cause the creator was friends with TTV and loyalists who hated the meme rallied behind it as a second choice, such a meme being avoided is why an actual quality Artahka moc won the second vote.

@@Centila Fair enough, there have been a lot of people happy with the choice, but I fall in a good chunk of people who think the moc is pretty weak. Somehow it's the most divisive issue of the community ha ha
I personally don't see it as a bad metric being it makes it more consistent with official in-house designs. I can see how one would think otherwise but I find stuff like this more in with the universe than something all sleek and complete bulk. Maybe my opinion ain't shit because I prefer the older more exposed nuts-and-bolts looking aesthetic, but I do think the artwork is much better than the moc though.
I'm not balls deep in the community though and had no idea of any funny nepotism going on behind the scenes. It's a shame because I do rather like how it looks still. I'm so torn on these contests because I do very much agree with leaving "well enough" alone for a couple of wiki images, as well as just shredding through any headcanons, but I also like the idea of treading the same grounds of the contests of old.
The way these contests are handled very much seem incredibly misguided, especially having read through some more of these debates in the comments.
@@nehehehgraylois In regards to how they're handled, totally agree. The Hagah rules and such are a complete nightmare. Not to mention the whole "I give the artist consent to just totally change the design" thing means that people could vote for a moc they like and then be disappointed if the winning art makes a change for the worse in their opinion. Also the mask rules make no fuckin' sense because Iruini's mask does what it says unlike Norik's, but they're all "no they HAVE to not use this, this, or this design because Greg said once that the masks can be different shapes"
