    While I do agree it would make an amazing story to follow the Toa as they survive in Makuta's Universe, it was important to follow Mata Nui in order to understand where the story was headed. If we had stayed with the Toa, we wouldn't know what Mata Nui was doing. Heck, it would almost be out-of-the-blue if he were to return in another giant body. Instead, his presence and actions drew Teridax's attention, resulting in the Final Battle. Now, if LEGO had given us a full year instead of just two comics, we could've started off inside the Matoran Universe as they survived, only for a sudden quake to occur, signifying the launch to Bara Magna.

      In a perfect world, we could have focused on the Toa Nuva and Inika/Mahri in the Makuta Spirit Robot for 2009, then switched gears in a 'meanwhile, while all this was going on' manner for 2010 that relates Mata Nui's adventures on Bara Magna. This would then lead to the discovery of the backup robot body, and set up the series climax.

    I think "Sahmad's tale" is a very good story. Much better than the unfinished failures of "The yesterday quest" and "The powers that be". Sahmad's story is really interesting and suspenseful. Him and his friend Telluris are scarred by a plague that wiped out their entire tribe and now must prevent it from happening again. The villain Annona is also a great addition, feeding on dreams and unintentionally inspiring the Great beings to create, thus essentially starting the Bionicle story. I was really surprised that a story about finding a giant tentacle monster ended up being more interesting than stories about searching for the Great beings or a mystery of a series of murders.

    I think that you missed the fact that this was clearly a reboot to create better sails for bionicle which even then had started to fail.
    If you view it just as they did it for the sake of story your unaware of the surrounding reasons. I mean yes Greg took these things lego said to probably an extent further than originally intended, but blaming Greg for everything is a little unfair. The issue is drawing the line between what was Greg and what was a Lego Management person. I mean Greg said love wasn't canon, but that probably comes from a Lego manager saying they didn't want to include romance within the theme, in all likelihood Greg just thought that meant he should decanonize all romantic relationships or alternatively tried to create an explanation for why there were no romantic relationships.

    • @CallanLoF
      @CallanLoF  5 років тому +7

      Veor Storm Bringer You’re partially correct. While a lot of 2009’s issues don’t fall solely on Greg because Lego clearly has a lot of involvement in concept approval, what does and doesn’t get implemented, and other details, Greg still is heavily responsible for the 2009 story as a whole and I don’t think this video was too harsh on him in that regard. Also I think you underestimate the freedom Greg had with canon, you’ll see why the non-canon love argument doesn’t really hold up when I make Ep. 4.

    • @lowlandnobleman6746

      CallanLof ...... Great video. I think the main reason Bionicle failed was due to prices(look at the cost of sets from 2008-2009 and compare that with 2003 or 2006) and also due to the brittle joints introduced in 2008. Basically, no one really wanted a bunch of expensive, fragile sets. They wanted the more affordable, durable sets of the older years. It’s a shame that we never got new technic pieces with ccbs joints. That would have been great.

    Remember that Greg didn't make Bionicle, Lego did. It's sad that people blame the writers of a story that was solely made to sell toys for changes in the story that they didn't agree with. In the 2008 story in which the Makuta were revealed to be an actual species instead of one person, you forget that Greg was only writing with what he was given, he didn't make the other Makuta himself, Lego made the sets, and decided the names, Greg was only doing the best with what he was given. Same with 2009, Lego made the sets, and Greg made stories about them, somple as that.

    • @CallanLoF
      @CallanLoF  5 років тому +2

      I'd appreciate some evidence to solidly back that, cause while I'm sure that is more or less true throughout BIONICLE's run, I'm pretty sure Greg had a lot more influence on how the story would affect the 6 canister sets in the later years than you might think. Lego made some new villains with bat elements in 2008, pretty darn sure it was Greg's idea to make them Makuta and make them a species. If he thought that idea was lame(which it is) and Lego didn't, he could have added caveats in the storyline to affirm that they're some kind of subset of the true Makuta, but he clearly didn't do that. And considering it was Greg's spin on ending BIONICLE in 2008 with the Makuta robot body twist, I'm pretty sure Lego gave him strong license for the Glatorian concept in 2009. I'll admit I haven't done specific research to confirm this, I know Ttv has done interviews with Greg where he may have elaborated on these things but I did not watch them. Ultimately I made these in jest and hold no hard feelings against Greg and what I consider to be poor ideas on his part, he had a job and he did it well for most of BIONICLE's run. I'm sure he's a great guy and I'm just poking fun here, so if you're going after the truth of the matter and whether my jokes are based off provably false statements, I'd appreciate some of that proof. Cheers, man.

    • @robobird3383
      @robobird3383 5 років тому +2

      Honestly, as soon as I read the word evidence, my first thought was: "Sh*t". Even if I was right about the matter, I'm too lazy to even look for some evidence. I actually rewatched this video after looking at a whole article about what Hasbro and Takara do to manipulate Transformers media to make sure they advertise their products successfully. So that probably leaked into my rant. I do admit I don't pay as much attention to Bionicle as I used to, and I was just relating it with something completely different. Also, I kinda liked 2009, and while it definitely had flaws, I thought it was pretty good. But I do agree with you on the part of the Makuta twist, after seeing such a depressing plot twist we all wanted to see Makuta get his arse kicked. Also, I think we still could have even had an Artahka set, (forgive me if I spelled that wrong) or Tuyet, or even Tren Krom! Anyway, I'm done. Sorry for bringing up an unstructured argument, and keep up the good work! Goodbye!

    i disagree with much here.
    i liked the desert setting, i liked that this time, there were TENSIONS between the small and the big people and that not all Glatorian were either just good or bad, the same for the Agori.
    i don't like Toa and Matoran that much, compared to them. Toa seem very cliché to me, considering how often, they fulfill the same role over and over again...
    the few evil ones (2 to be exact!), seemed way too "just misleaded and actually good intentions!" Tuyet still had "good intentions" and was probably ONLY portrayed as evil, because she killed Matoran, Helryx made morally questionable choices, but was still portrayed as "a good girl". like the story made it very clear that the reader was not supposed to see her as villain, despite how shitty her behavior was. Nidhiki would've escaped the Dark Hunters and stayed being a usual Toa, if Roodaka never mutated him.
    I would've liked an evil Toa, who would be clearly portrayed as evil, without having killed a single Matoran or betraying any other Toa.
    the few evil Matoran were utter jokes, they were only evil, either because they were either corrupted or just "evil, for the sake of it". Vultraz was just an edge-lord and Akhmou is not that interesting for me. he's too much of an exception. like ONE evil Matoran out of thousand good ones!
    and there were no non-Toa heroes, who weren't part of the hive-minded Order of Mata Nui.
    i would argue that the Barraki are the most "realistic" villains. because despite of how evil they were, they themselves never did evil things "because evil!". they "just" saw themselves as better leaders than Mata Nui. some of them had at least somewhat of a moral compass and the uneasy alliances of some with the Toa REALLY got me hooked into this part of the story!
    compare them to villains, like the Piraka! "I love being mean!" could be plastered over all of them! (except maybe Avak, who just comes off as "i'm following them, they seem really cool!")
    and all other Makuta besides Krika and maybe Antroz were pretty flat villains, also "i'm evil, just because!". the worst of them was Icarax, tho.
    Man, how much i HATE Icarax! i wish Antroz would've teamed up with Krika against Teridax, instead.
    PS: Sahmad is one of my favorite characters. He is maybe not as connected to the canon as he could've been, but his character arc is one of the most interesting in all of Bionicle!

    • @CallanLoF
      @CallanLoF  5 років тому +2

      Oh Yudron, the greatness of my disappointment in you is too much to bear. You’re talking all feelings and not clarifying terms. I will admit that there weren’t a ton of interesting moral gray Matoran and Toa characters, but there were a few like Mavrah and Lesovikk. Neither were very well developed, but neither was all the interesting elements of Bara Magna like the uneasy alliances. The Legend Reborn is the main 2009 story and in that the tribes aren’t very distinct and only serve the “unite against tyranny” plot I mentioned. All the characters and tribe stuff they COULD have done may have been great, but my other real issue with 2009 that I could have made clearer is the terms. Glatorian are Toa and Agori are Matoran for all intents and purposes. Why are they different? Cause Greg wanted to make BIONICLE his own and transition away from the setups most fans liked. And I think those concepts are pointless. Also your Barraki vs Piraka argument is all feelings, no facts. The fact is the Barraki were not all that distinct as characters with the main backstory of being ancient warlords with a chance to reclaim their former glory if they work together to get the Mask of Life. Pretty basic. Any intricacies to their interactions would be doing the same thing the Piraka did, with their members making plans amongst themselves to ultimately betray the others, so Greg mostly avoided that and as a result the Barraki are a big ball of meh. The Piraka represent the worst of villains and as a whole they show that a team not built on test will fail. That’s the main point, but each of them feel distinct in their cruel ways and them wanting to raid and loot all sorts of locations is more relatable than people wanting to become warlords again. If you want to bring up specific story elements that I missed in order to disagree or disprove my conclusions, I’d appreciate it, but most of what that comment said was based on your viewpoint and not the facts of the matter.

      Oh boy, this debate's gonna be a doozie.
      1. Tuyet is DEFINITELY evil. It is true her actions were to achieve the Toa's goal faster, but she has intentions far worse once she's done. The entire serial "Dark mirror" is about an alternate dimension where Tuyet won and she turned the Matoran universe into an empire to serve her will and essentially put Matoran into slavery. She clearly went mad with power after she got the Nui stone and realized her given goal wasn't enough for her.
      2. Helryx does not have ANY evil intentions. She actually regrets some choices she makes but makes them anyway because the universe depends on it. She's the leader of an organization dedicated to the safety of the entire Matoran universe. She doesn't have a choice.
      3. Nidhiki couldn't possibly return to a normal Toa life if he was never mutated. Lhikan would've spread the word of a second rogue Toa on the loose. No one would feel safe having him as their protector. And not to mention, he's a valuable asset for the Dark hunters. The shadowed one would track him down and bring him back. As soon as Nidhiki started making deals with Lariska, he doomed his Toa life forever.
      4. Here's a list of non-Toa heroes that were not part of the Order of Mata Nui. (And what do you mean by hive minded?)
      Chronicler's company
      Voya Nui resistance team
      Vahki (and variants)
      Bohrok (and variants)
      Golden skinned being
      Artakha
      Keetongu
      Tren Krom
      5. The Piraka had no choice when going to Voya Nui. Teridax forced them to go. Had he not invaded their minds, they would've just taken what they needed from Mangaia and moved along. (Sorry for pun)
      6. Not all the Makuta were flat villains. Teridax himself used to be good until he was inspired by the League of six kingdoms.
      The brotherhood started a mutiny against Miserix, and he just wants to see the brotherhood burn. After Teridax took over, he did the right thing and tried to foil his plan. Miserix is more like an anti-villain, he's evil in his own way.
      7. Are you gonna elaborate on why you hate Icarax or just state your opinion?
      8. Sahmad is connected to the canon well. He's the reason Spherus Magna isn't in an eternal dreaming plague. He caused Annona to teleport to the Golden skinned being and he was the one who dreamed of Annona's defeat, and GSB made it a reality.
