- Are California Kingsnakes good pet reptiles? Are they the right pet snake for you? In today's species spotlight video, I'll talk all about california kingsnakes to help you decide!
California kingsnakes are super cool snakes! They're large, but not too large. They're easy and simple to feed, and have overall easy care. They're easy to find, and aren't super expensive. Over all, California kingsnakes are, in my opinion, one of the best colubrid snakes that can be kept as pets.

My Cali King is almost 20 years old and asks to come hang out with me almost every day unless he's in shed. We do play with long tubes he can crawl through, I give him the opportunity to smell and touch new things and I'm always on the lookout for enrichment for him. He is a great pet and sometimes just wants to crawl into my shirt and cuddle with his head stuck out for neck rubs. He does go off his food in winter at times but I think that's a natural part of their life cycle. He's an absolute sweetheart, I can't think of a better pet. I love him to pieces.❤🐍❤
This makes me so happy to hear! He’s a very lucky snake. 🥰
I chose the Cali King as my first snake because I love their cute personalities and appetite. I would say a con to them is when they're younger and you're trying to work with them, be prepared to get musked on and possibly pooped on. Still though, I love my little guy and he's getting better as he gets older. ❤
I love my California Kingsnake. He has such a cool personality.
That’s great!
This was really interesting. These snakes weren’t really on my radar before this
I’m so glad you enjoyed! They’re awesome!
I love the species spotlight idea!! and great video ❤️
Hey Hunter glad to see you're doing great😁👍
Thank you, Monica!
I love how comprehensive your intro to the California Kingsnake is! Congrats to you for finding Bramble a new home, and to Bramble for getting one. No wonder he's so happy to 'hug' you. 😅😊 Thanks for a great video!
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed!
Excellent video!
I appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed.
Great video! Bramble is so pretty, its awesome that they've found a home, in their native state too!
Thank you! 😊
I had one for over 15 years
That’s so cool! It’s great that you were able to spend such a long time with such a cool snake.
This video is quite useful. I want a California Kingsnake so bad lol.
They’re such cool snakes!
@@HunterHouck I agree. Gonna name mine Beetlejuice when I finally get one lol
My grandson's kingsnake has a very good appetite. He would eat every time. But offcourse he gets a regular mouse now every 7 days. He's 97cm and 2 years old since june 29. In August 24 he has him 2 years. He's never defensive with him. He can kiss him on his head an the snake is always curious and explorative. He handle(d)s him a lot! Every day actually. Except when he just ate he leaves him for at least 36hours. He has an enclosure off 120cm×50cm×50 cm. 1/3 more than the recomended 80×40×40 witch is too small said my grandson. He also buys evey time he cleans his terra (I mean a deep clean because he looks everyday like 2-3 times off there's something to spot clean.) something new for him. He does a deepclean every 2,5 months so more than recomanded. And he has 2 water dishes. Every day he gets bottle water en every week he switches the water dish so he can clean it. It's very important for him that he's healthy. He once thought he was sick and went to the reptile vet. But he already did isobetadine on him for a couple off days. So he went to the vet and it was just a little wound that would heal in the next shed and he didn't had to pay even. The vet was happy that he had a person that cared so very much about a snake. (he cares more about him than anyone else) and indeed afther like 10 days he shed and it was gone. Also you really had to search for it so small was that wound. And he was so worried. Now that he learned more and more he's still always a bit worried but he does everything possible to give him the greatest life he can get. It's actually quite adoring too see a full grown men care so much about his pet snake and the bond they have is incredible. If every snake keeper was like him the hobby would be much more positive (in reputation) I mean.
He does triple checks that everything's locked. And most off the time when he comes down he goes up again fast to check again. I think he has an obsession but hey I don't complain at all. I'm very happy for him and his snake, that he provides magnificent care for him.
Do a Speices spotlight on Eastern Indigo Snake,Mangrove Snake or Southern White Lipped Python
such a cool snake
Absolutely!
Great video as always, Hunter! Thanks for sharing! From my experience, I've found the kingsnake I've worked with (a Florida) to have a good appetite, and definitely one of the better snakes for handling! When we do various ambassador animal programs at the zoo, the Florida kingsnake is my top choice for any of the snakes I've worked with, along with our Rosy Boa. Personally, I wouldn't recommend a kingsnake for a first time snake owner- but they definitely aren't an advanced pet either! But, as always, great video! Definitely learned some stuff.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I think that they could definitely be helpful for someone assessing whether or not a kingsnake is right for them. I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
@@HunterHouck no problem! I will say that some of us like to joke that the kingsnake is the hardest snake to hold, but also the hardest to drop, lol! It's more the snake handling you, than you handling the snake!
So true! They see people as a tree to be climbed! 🤣
@@HunterHouck truth! 😁
@@HunterHouck since you mentioned kings as one of the best beginner snakes, I will tell you the species that I'd always recommend out of ones I've worked with: the Rosy Boa.
It's an underrated species, but really a perfect first pet snake. They're small enough that they're extremely reasonable to keep, and even if it did bite you, which isn't extremely likely, its too small to cause any damage. Rosy boas also feed like boas, so won't go on long hunger strikes. Plus they're rather affordable, easy to feed, and utterly adorable! It's also a plus that it's a Desert species so doesn't need high humidity!
Lucky snake! I wish someone would ship me to California 😆
😂😂
I love bramble
He’s a legend 😌🐍
What type of mouse or rat do you buy for them frozen or in not frozen? and I know snakes 🐍 can’t eat bugs like leppord geckos but have you tried feeding your snakes bugs for fun to see what they would do?
I purchase frozen mice. Snakes that don’t eat bugs wouldn’t recognize them as food. That’s a great question, though! 😁
And can captive leopard geckos go into brumation during the winter time?
Some keepers do brumate leopard geckos, yes. 🙂
I think the California kingsnake is right for me cuz I already have one his name is maze
That’s a great name!
Is that bramble? That snake is so cuteee
It is Bramble! 😊
