When you're Tig welding on a frame or off the bench, it's totally okay to rest the cup on the workpiece. This gives you a consistent arc length that can be easily changed by rocking the torch in or out in a a very stable motion. If done with a large gas lense, often the electrode angle is close to ideal. Hope that helps.
@@tonyalto1014 Yeah and not necessarily even classically "walking the cup" but, when I'm welding on something that isn't really critical to not mar the finish, I'll just "drag the cup" and it helps to keep my arc length consistent when I don't have a solid rest for my arms.

I've just got back into it and i'm 32, bough two cheap 2 stroke scoots, have gone nuts with them, an absolute blast and now im older the convenience of twist and go and just sitting is kinda nice... I have a motorbike too but the scoot wins all the short trips. Get back into it!

i see a thailand style big rim, big disk full hydraulic braking package coming. this thing looks like it's going to brake worse than a 103... i would also weld braces and triangulate that frame, both below the chain, to the engine block mount, and above, to the seat suspention mount. i would also relocate the axle at least 4cm lower and 10cm further, so it cant lift too easily. good luck on the build.
Brilliant. You should get a medal! It has a definite NSU '60s racer vibe, but to make it really great you need to get some sheet ally and make a "dustbin" fairing for it.
When I 1st saw you kick it over it was all flimsy and floppy I was like yeah death trap then once I saw how crooked the handle bars where I realized its probably always been a death trap. Please dont fall my dude. The helmet was the right call

@@poprawa this is a kawasaki motocross ktm 50sx engine, they travel at these speeds for dirtbiks, the earliest motorcycles like the harley davidson model 1s could go 35-45mph and they were on a bicycle frame, people were riding that fast back in the days, the kx50 can go 45mph top speed. these 'speeds' are not unique or new in bicycles.

I am not saying these are normal speeds and practical, it is very NOT SAFE, but these speeds have been achieved by people on bicycles today and in the past for sure when they were tinkering with 2-strokes. The hobbyists that are tinkering with 2-strokes today are using the principles of the past made done by people in the past, and they can reach 70mph+ using those principles on a BICYCLE frame, just as this guy in the vid, a ktm can go more than 45mph those are just the stock calibration so engine has a much longer life than if overdrriven all the time. With all of your knowledge it would be cool to see you take the pinnacle of 2 stroke innovation from the 2 stroke boom in the 1960’s like a McCulloch 101b . Every kid dreamed of owning a gokart with that engine and go over it and make it perform to your standards of today’s innovation. McCulloch led the American 2 stroke innovation charge. They had some serious technical firsts in the two stroke world.
Takes me back 50 + years to my Quickly days. My tuning efforts consisted of removing the silencer, pumping the tires up rock hard and cleaning the spark plug every ride 😂. Great video as usual.
With no mention of resizing the carb jets to compensate removal of the silencer in which you shortened the system.. and doing so on small engines critically affects the overall power output so basically you were eliminating performance instead of adding performance ... Causing your engine to run with less horsepower than it had stock but made a lot more noise and sounded meaner didn't it but it actually going slower
Cleanliness is close to godliness when it comes to TIG, use acetone to wipe away contaminates and you may be amazed at the improvement. Also the colour of the weld is an indicator that the weld is a little cold, turn up the machine and dip the puddle faster to maintain a nice flow
Looks awesome. Time to spend a bit to remove at least some the ‘death’! Could you make some ‘feet first’ type foot pegs, with drop downs just in front of the carb and pick up a bolt on the engine cases… might need some riser bars to clear your news.
About the 0.5 mm squish it would be too low on regular gas, 0.5 is the "slimest" limit we use on scooter and gear moped for drag races with high octane gas. 0.85 is a safe clearance and not shocking to me. Also I think your gearing is too long, should put a more little "front" sprocket

I searched for this comment, wanted to write the same. These cranks are the worst in terms of reliability. When the piston looked like that, the crank will be not much better imo 😬.

After the first 80% open throttle driving, the crankshift will die and so the topend and if your realy unlucky the whole engine....had a malossi mhr 80cc with this engine and the rod bent after just some km cause i was young, dumb and poor and didnt think about the original toothstick crankshaft but only about max hp...lol But give me a call if you want me to drive this bike full throttle. its a great honor to die in a foreign country for the sake of fun/science! Well depends if im able to leave my country anyway in todays time....
i like how you say "they call it huge ports"and than compare it to the pip cilinder... there is one slight difference do 1 does work and the other does not ^^
radiator is not to small, got one in the same size and it works for the last 11 years on the same engine EBS as used in this project but with a malossi 80cc cylinder. between EBS and the new D50bo engines i like the ebs as it got external water supply and that makes it far easyer to fix with the engine and if the water pump is going to shit it dont dump the water to the gearbox.
I own and drive a NSU Quickly myself, though with its original 1.4 HP engine. The frame is a monocoque made of two halves welded together and quite stiff for its time and compared with its competitioners. IMHO the fork with its small suspension levers is the weak point of the bike (it is called Moped in German)
Actually this is your last project so far, and from the beginning this is the only one you've taken for a test ride. Keep doing all your good stuff tho, you're amazing💪💪 From Italy by the way
Wow this idea with the bicycle setup was in my head for a long time too and unfortunately i lost my license for my riju recently The moped did around 140 kph and reached 18 hp on the rear wheel and now i could use the engine to make my one bicycle moped 😜
🇨🇦 You can cut and re-weld the pipe to better fit the bike with no loss of performance as long as you don't shorten or lengthen it. I've modified many tune pipes to fit snowmobiles. When you buy some brand tune pipes for specific engines they come absolutely straight and you must cut and weld to fit the application.
I'm more than willing to try this bike it's a win win, i win since I would get to drive one cool af bike and win if i died to this death trap because I died having one hell of a good time

Instead of smearing the gaskets with oil, I always use waterproof grease because it is a little "stickyer" and larger gaskets seem to stay in place better ... great video!

The problem with those tuning cylinders for stock engines is the spacing of the studs as well as the “meat” on the cases. They simply cannot make them as wide as would be desirable for better transfers without adding material on the cases and moving the studs.

Personal recommendations. Foam air filter sock asap to stop rocks etc Folding footpeg or just try moving the kickstart on the splines and start it at a weird angle. Would a leather saddle for a bicycle like a Brooks fit for comfort. Dutch courage!!!!! Sounds pokey on the pipe.
Man this brings me back to the late 80's, trying to squeeze everything available out of a 2 speed Zündapp Mustang without dying trying... I'm glad I didn't know engineering like I do today back then because then I wouldn't be here writing this comment today, but there's something special about 2 stroke for sure! I am new to your channel and I had to Subscribe! I absolutely love 2stroke stuff!! I was very heavy into building super high output Honda Dio engines, the AF16's to be exact. 20 years ago the best I could do was a 119cc which made a claimed 20hp out of a 50cc moped engine. We used mostly Phongeer and S.E.F. stuff for the strokers and Polini Corsa and Malossi for the 72cc builds. 2stroke was and still is pretty damn popular down here in Hawaii. The kids nowadays here are building 120cc strokers that hit 90mph all day long. I'm sure a quick search of Hawaii moped stuff will net some cool vids. Anyway, sorry for such a long comment. They made an ebs/ebe075 too, only for euro market though. Never saw them here in the uk. I’ve hear the cases are wider than these, that may translate to an even wider stud spacing? Might be worth a look if you can find a cheap case.
indeed, for regular use, this is good power. I had much fun with my two Zündapp mopeds, back in the days. One of them was completly rebuild, with a Zeta 70 cc on 4 speed. Not the best cylinders on the market, but it ran smooth topspeed 85 km/h. Really nice summer evening rides i had with it. When i watch your video's it makes me want a moped again. Maybe a Kreidler or back to Zündapp. Not cheap these days!
Holy crap!! You were barely getting into the powerband and that thing wants to rip the rim off the tire. When you were kickstarting the bike, you can tell there was alot of flex on that frame. I'd beef up the frame as one to check off the list. So dreams do come true..great build👍
Genius 😂🔥👍 I liked this engine better then the newer version because of the transmission gearing i had this one with a Mk 70cc prorace on my derbi with bidalot exhaust and mvt ignition runned great like that but the frames where terrible 🥲 missed that sound 🔥 🔥 🔥
Yes Derbi have horrible frame unfortunately 😅 ( because it lack motor balance , " balancier " in French ) . this causes horrible vibrations and it loosens all the screws .
that sounds way better then i think that chassis can stand ... not being negative its a compliment ..i had a cr 250 when i was younger and it didn't sound as responsive as this ..takes a brilliant man to build and engine out of base material like that
I add oil to new gaskets too on certain things not sure where i got that from!? Seems to help the gasket last longer than dry fit and helps keep it flexible

Great stuffing! To get better ground clearance would it not be easier to add a short upward angled exhaust pipe , a few inches long and turn the exhaust pipe upside down and mount it to that. It would then have the exhaust muffler running horizontal and below the seat. Of course you would then need a heat shield...just a thought..
Theres an Italian brand called Cristofolini who makes insane tuning cylinders from Minarelli and Piaggio , probably the most advanced commercially availlable porting wise. they even do a twin cylinder setup too
if you move the front of the engine up so the cylinder head is nearer to the downtube that would solve your ground clearance problem and put the exhaust at a much more functional and better looking angle and I can't tell but I think that would allow you to use a shorter intake tube.
WoWWW - that is easily one of the hackiest things I have seen in a VERY long time - and I am seriously split between simple awe from the zero-f*cks-given attitude that is this entire project, and utter disgust of the zero-f*cks-given attitude that is this entire project :D. Leaning more towards simply just loving it for being ridiculous though :D.

Also the colour of the weld is an indicator that the weld is a little cold, turn up the machine and dip the puddle faster to maintain a nice flow

Could you make some ‘feet first’ type foot pegs, with drop downs just in front of the carb and pick up a bolt on the engine cases… might need some riser bars to clear your news.

About the 0.5 mm squish it would be too low on regular gas, 0.5 is the "slimest" limit we use on scooter and gear moped for drag races with high octane gas. 0.85 is a safe clearance and not shocking to me.
Also I think your gearing is too long, should put a more little "front" sprocket

Did you use the original derbi crankshaft? I have seen many that failed with an upgraded 10hp+ setup. Just saying :) awesome build thoo!!

I searched for this comment, wanted to write the same. These cranks are the worst in terms of reliability. When the piston looked like that, the crank will be not much better imo 😬.

After the first 80% open throttle driving, the crankshift will die and so the topend and if your realy unlucky the whole engine....had a malossi mhr 80cc with this engine and the rod bent after just some km cause i was young, dumb and poor and didnt think about the original toothstick crankshaft but only about max hp...lol But give me a call if you want me to drive this bike full throttle. its a great honor to die in a foreign country for the sake of fun/science! Well depends if im able to leave my country anyway in todays time....

radiator is not to small, got one in the same size and it works for the last 11 years on the same engine EBS as used in this project but with a malossi 80cc cylinder.
between EBS and the new D50bo engines i like the ebs as it got external water supply and that makes it far easyer to fix with the engine and if the water pump is going to shit it dont dump the water to the gearbox.
Is there anyway you could "inner tube" the frame with round tubing to stiffen it all up without ruining the look?
I own and drive a NSU Quickly myself, though with its original 1.4 HP engine. The frame is a monocoque made of two halves welded together and quite stiff for its time and compared with its competitioners. IMHO the fork with its small suspension levers is the weak point of the bike (it is called Moped in German)

Wow this idea with the bicycle setup was in my head for a long time too and unfortunately i lost my license for my riju recently
The moped did around 140 kph and reached 18 hp on the rear wheel and now i could use the engine to make my one bicycle moped 😜

🇨🇦 You can cut and re-weld the pipe to better fit the bike with no loss of performance as long as you don't shorten or lengthen it. I've modified many tune pipes to fit snowmobiles. When you buy some brand tune pipes for specific engines they come absolutely straight and you must cut and weld to fit the application.
I'm more than willing to try this bike it's a win win, i win since I would get to drive one cool af bike and win if i died to this death trap because I died having one hell of a good time

Instead of smearing the gaskets with oil, I always use waterproof grease because it is a little "stickyer" and larger gaskets seem to stay in place better ... great video!

The problem with those tuning cylinders for stock engines is the spacing of the studs as well as the “meat” on the cases. They simply cannot make them as wide as would be desirable for better transfers without adding material on the cases and moving the studs.
The DB50/EBS 50 it's very good engine , but the minarelli Am 6 /345 is my absolute Favorite! 👌 Very good Job, your bike it's a beast! 💥💥💥

Folding footpeg or just try moving the kickstart on the splines and start it at a weird angle.
Would a leather saddle for a bicycle like a Brooks fit for comfort.

I used 26" heavy duty alloy delivery bike rims on my Motoconfort. They seem very solid.
Man this brings me back to the late 80's, trying to squeeze everything available out of a 2 speed Zündapp Mustang without dying trying...
I'm glad I didn't know engineering like I do today back then because then I wouldn't be here writing this comment today, but there's something special about 2 stroke for sure! I can still remember the smell! :D (and I've still got some scars...)

2stroke stuff!! I was very heavy into building super high output Honda Dio engines, the AF16's to be exact.
20 years ago the best I could do was a 119cc which made a claimed 20hp out of a 50cc moped engine. We used mostly Phongeer and S.E.F. stuff for the strokers and Polini Corsa and Malossi for the 72cc builds. 2stroke was and still is pretty damn popular down here in Hawaii. The kids nowadays here are building 120cc strokers that hit 90mph all day long. I'm sure a quick search of Hawaii moped stuff will net some cool vids. Anyway, sorry for such a long comment. I was just excited to find your channel haha! I look forward to more cool stuff!

They made an ebs/ebe075 too, only for euro market though. Never saw them here in the uk. I’ve hear the cases are wider than these, that may translate to an even wider stud spacing? Might be worth a look if you can find a cheap case.

indeed, for regular use, this is good power. I had much fun with my two Zündapp mopeds, back in the days. One of them was completly rebuild, with a Zeta 70 cc
on 4 speed. Not the best cylinders on the market, but it ran smooth topspeed 85 km/h. Really nice summer evening rides i had with it. When i watch your video's it
makes me want a moped again. Maybe a Kreidler or back to Zündapp. Not cheap these days!

Holy crap!! You were barely getting into the powerband and that thing wants to rip the rim off the tire. When you were kickstarting the bike, you can tell there was alot of flex on that frame. I'd beef up the frame as one to check off the list.

I liked this engine better then the newer version because of the transmission gearing i had this one with a Mk 70cc prorace on my derbi with bidalot exhaust and mvt ignition runned great like that but the frames where terrible 🥲

Yes Derbi have horrible frame unfortunately 😅 ( because it lack motor balance , " balancier " in French ) . this causes horrible vibrations and it loosens all the screws .

I add oil to new gaskets too on certain things not sure where i got that from!? Seems to help the gasket last longer than dry fit and helps keep it flexible

Great stuffing! To get better ground clearance would it not be easier to add a short upward angled exhaust pipe , a few inches long and turn the exhaust pipe upside down and mount it to that. It would then have the exhaust muffler running horizontal and below the seat. Of course you would then need a heat shield...just a thought..

Theres an Italian brand called Cristofolini who makes insane tuning cylinders from Minarelli and Piaggio , probably the most advanced commercially availlable porting wise. they even do a twin cylinder setup too
if you move the front of the engine up so the cylinder head is nearer to the downtube that would solve your ground clearance problem and put the exhaust at a much more functional and better looking angle and I can't tell but I think that would allow you to use a shorter intake tube.
WoWWW - that is easily one of the hackiest things I have seen in a VERY long time - and I am seriously split between simple awe from the zero-f*cks-given attitude that is this entire project, and utter disgust of the zero-f*cks-given attitude that is this entire project :D.
