Very useful video! Thanks! what you show at 10:46 is actually a small built-in sharpener. My Koh-i-noor clutch pencil also has that one, works quite well.
@@samiramian Hi again! I will try to explain with my limited english :P It is the little thing you take out from the bottom of the pencil. It has four small blades. Take a look here: threepointsofthecompass.com/gear/small-stuff-sketching-the-trail/part-3-mechanical-pencils/ (hope this helps) I don't think it is going to surpass the other sharperners, but i thought you should know it is there :)
Really interesting video, thank you 🙏🏼 I agree about taking care of vintage tools, they’re very worthy of it as the care and tolerances in the way many are made is disappearing nowadays.
Hi samira. Thankyou for doing this video! This is exactly the video i (and i think many others)were looking for and the information you've provided is insane! I have a question, if you don't mind me asking? I have a vintage rotring drop bow pump compass i would love to use and have again struggled to find any sort of video/article for even using one. I'm mainly looking for info on the pump/pin part as I've not used one before and would hate to break it. I've noticed the long pin in the middle moves up and down freely. Is this supposed to happen or is it supposed to lock in? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Hi Beth, thank you so much and glad to be of help! I dont use mine so much, but did so in this video: ua-cam.com/video/iIvjkR_15h0/v-deo.html not sure hoe helpful it is! But do have a look, basically the pencil spins arund the point which is kept perpendicular to the paper. Pro's do it one handed, me not so much!
Gracias.
Wow. I have toolboxes full of drawing instruments, and it's very reassuring to find that it's not just me. So glad I've found your channel. Wonderful stuff, thank you very much.
RICHTER, K&E, ROTRING, DIETZGEN, FREDERICK POST, BOFA chinos, KIN, FB rusos, SHOOENER, y otras marcas mas que ahorita no recuerdo. Gracias.
Thank you... By the way the little "top" that you are holding in your right hand from your orange pencil (Video ref. 10 min 45 sec.) is a weird little sharpener too! The little metal legs act as sharpening blades, quirky!
@@samiramian Thanks for replying. Okay, I get it. I have an opposite view for the weight. 😂 I have four vintage Rotring compasses. And those are the only ones I like to use becuase they are so robust! For some reason, I prefer heavy-weight compasses because the heavy ones allow me to draw without applying any pressure on the compass. By the way, I love your work, and have learnt a lot from your videos. I follow you on Instagram as well. Your work is just brilliant. Thanks for uploading such easy-to-understand tutorials.
@Special Effects Graphics Design Co I definitely think the vintage build quality is so very superior, but that level of carefulness and precision isnt something I always need, so I leave them for special more involved drawings...
I just bought the Fiskars compass and protractor set. Compass is metal and locking. Came with spare leads. Seems durable. Protractor is metal. That Rotring compass is nice.
Thank you so much. I was planning to return my Jakar compass because I couldn't see how the extension arm worked, but now you saved me the trip to the art shop.... on the other hand, maybe I'll pop in anyways.
I really enjoyed your indepth video. I was looking for a nice, sturdy and shiny compass set with an inkbow, will come in handy for my technical drawing endeavours. I have my eyes on a brand called 'Ferocious Viking', it seems to be quite good. I went on your website to see the equipment listed and was hoping to see that shiny rOtring compass that you were showing, I saw the rOtring centro instead which looks sort of nice, however, it seems to have received bad reviews about the plastic and how reviewers didn't expect the quality of rOtring, so I'm hesitating to order that one. I might just go for the Ferocious Viking brand.
thanks for watching! I think vintage rotring is definitely of a higher standard, vntage any brand usally are... fun to find on ebay top. Hope your ferocious viking one is a good one! such a great name!
@@samiramian Hello, I was browsing vintage compass sets on ebay and I couldn't stio myself, threw a bunch of them in the basket and hit the buy fast before I could change my mind XD. One of them arrived, it's quality is very very good, I was pleasantly surprised. I have lost interest in modern day compasses after seeing the vintage ones, I don't like the plastics on them.
Once you said that you have a box of pencils remains , I think you can use the core of it for your compass 8:38 , thank you for sharing that you are a great teacher ❤

Thanks so much for explaining the threaded technical pen holder! I have one and had no idea how it worked. Will all technical pens fit in? Also, do you know if I can buy just a universal pen holder without buying the whole compass kit?
very welcom! Yes to all tech pens being compatible, they are standard barrels. And perhaps Ebay maybe a good place to start for the universal pen holder... perhaps also look for a mixed/random set...and you'll for a few cool extras too!
I started with a modern Rotring and detest it. It's accuracy is appalling and its now held tight with tape! Brilliant video though and I learned so much! Thank you!!! Xxx
