I hope you read my comment. There is already a lot written about Viktor Tsoi, but no one said that he was really a very extraordinary person. During his lifetime, Victor was not verbose, he did not write political songs, contrary to what many fans of his work believe. Tsoi wrote about his inner struggle, this is his philosophical perception of his life and his place in it. He wrote the best and legendary songs on the eve of his tragic death, his previous albums were just pranks, a joke, but before his death, the Kino group released the Blood Type album, which is actually the culmination of his work and success. The more I try to understand him, the more agreeable he becomes. We are almost the same age, I listened to his songs when I served in the Soviet army in 1987-89. In Russia they always say - "Tsoi is alive!".
I just have to tell you that you are the best!!! So delving into the words of Tsoi is not given to every native speaker of the Russian language ... you just amazed me.

I would like to disagree with you. He wrote about political themes, albeit noticing them requires reading between the lines. Take a look at their song "Trolleybus", or "Ya Ob'yavlyayu Svoy Dom...". The former contains a lot of indirect references to the USSR and the governing system, and the second one has a self-censored chorus part. In English, the chorus is:
"I declare my house,
a nuke-free zone.
I declare my courtyard,
a nuke-free zone.
I declare my city,
a nuke-free zone.
I declare my..."
The fourth sentence was cut short, but everyone who can read between the lines know, what kind of declaration he has wanted to make there.

Посмотри, как уже после вступительных аккордов сходит с ума целых 80 тысяч людей, когда Металлика начинает играть песню Кино - Группа крови на концерте на стадионе в Москве в 2019 году. Они пели песню 1990 года, а слова знал каждый! Так легенды проверяются временем.

I heard this song for the first time 3 years ago and without talking a single word of Russian, Kino and this song, in particular became one of my favorites. The melody helps you think and relax (even though the lyrics are a call to action).
I heard a very good description of Tsoi's lyrics and Kino's music. They are not for singing or dancing but for thinking.
If you decide to learn Russian you'll understand the deep thought of his lyrics. But the translation into English is very good and reflects very well what the poet meant by his lyrics. And, by the way, the Victor's voice is kind of a musical instrument as well.

When Victor Tsoi died I cried although I was only 10. This is the voice of our generation. This IS because everyone knows- ЦОЙ ЖИВ!
I don't know why but it turns out that tears come to my eyes when I hear this song. At first I thought that I was so sentimental, but I noticed that many other people feel likewise, and then I heard a very good description of Tsoi's lyrics and Kino's music. They are not for singing or dancing but for thinking. And as I listen to it realizing that Victor is alive only in my heart I cry and understand how deeply this song is embedded in my heart, I'd rather say - indoctrinated. This song, or in particular, this version of that song, was recorded and then released in 1989 in the album called "The Last Hero" (Poslédniy Gerói). And it takes its origin way back in 1986, but then it was a lot shorter, and sounded almost completely different. There was a version of that song released in 1988 in the album "Blood Type" (Grúppa Króvi), which was basically the full, completed variant of the original from 1986.
This variant though sounds completely different, but it's absolutely mindblowing, and I love it so much. Perfect speed and tempo, variety of sounds, how the lyrics blend in so well, and especially Yúri Kasparyán's MAGNIFICENT guitar solo from just out of this world. I actually cant believe this kind of music was real before I was even born.

Kino is actually a fairly old group and was active from 1980-1990. It fell apart after the unfortunate death of Viktor Tsoi in an auto accident when he was only 28 years old. Спокойная Ночь was released in 1988 as part of the Blood Type album. People have been rallying behind Tsoi’s message for decades at this point and he still has a massive impact on the music and overall culture of many post-soviet countries.

"Calm/Peaceful Night" (Спокойная Ночь), was originally released in 1988 in the album Группа Крови ("Gruppa Krovi", Blood Type); rereleased in the compilation album Легенда ("Legenda", Legend) in 2018
First version/iteration came out on the Ночь album though.

Kino was the most popular rock band in late USSR, but the lead singer and author - VIctor Tsoi - had died in car crush in 1990. His songs are still actual even today.
Musicians told that while they recorded this song in a flat of one of band members, the neighbors came and askes not to play because a person died right away in a flat behind a wall...

Hey Ric, this band was active during the end of the 80s, I think when the Soviets implemented the policy called "Glasnost", or "Publicity".
Unfortunately, the singer of this band died in a horrible car crash somewhere in Latvia, so we haven't got any new releases since 1989 except for some "unpublished" records.
I'd say that this band is quite influential in the Post-Soviet area, together with "Akvarium", "Nautilus Pompilus", "Agatha Christie", "Sektor Gaza", and stuff. Not everyone is listening to the lyrics attentively, because the melody alone gives you a certain mood, though you might discover the second "manifestation" if you listen to the lyrics more closely.

Шедевры делаются на стыке сильных эмоций, которые переживает каждый автор своего произведения в определенный момент жизни и только так произведение может попасть к нам в душу через поколения и нести тот смысл, что автор вложил в него. В детстве, услышав эту песню впервые я истолковал ее мистическим образом. Цой говорит,что есть некое всемогущее темное начало, откуда мы все вышли и куда уйдем со всеми своими лошадьми, ружьями и факелами. Что-то обесценивающее любую борьбу, нечто поглощающее огни целых городов, нечто высшее, беспристрастное, с чем можно только смириться и уснуть, вернувшись в эту первородную тьму.
А после того, как я посмотрел твое видео, у меня появилось другое понимание. Под Ночью Цой подразумевает безразличие людей, их апатию и бессилие. Большинство просто ляжет спать, надеясь, что кто-то их спасет. И даже никогда не узнает имена тех, кто их спас. Ночь это болото, бездна бездействия и мелкого страха восстать против зла и несправедливости.
А какое ваше понимание этой песни?
И первое и второе из твоей интерпретации может иметь место касательно ночи, но я предпочитаю первую, мистическую интерпретацию: ночь для меня возможность быть наедине с собой, хотя бы даже чисто техническая: тихо, никто не отвлекает итд. ну и приглушенный свет настраивает на мистический лад. Цой тоже в одном из интервью говорил о мистическом состоянии именно ночью. А еще: числовая мера слов Мать и Тьма одинакова - это именно то откуда мы вышли и куда уйдём ;)

YES !! this guy Viktor Tsoi managed to say the most important and correct words. He had the courage and strength not to succumb to this world, but to speak openly what he considered necessary. All his songs are very deep.
Hey, Ric. Enlightening reaction. The song came out long time ago in 1989. I first heard it when I was a second-year soldier in the Soviet military. Late 80s were a time of transition in Russia - from Soviet orthodoxy to post-Soviet lawlessness. Tsoi (the vocalist) had his finger on the pulse of that change for sure. Your reaction brilliantly unpacks the meaning of the lyrics. This has been one of my favorites by Tsoi for all these years, but it was your break-down of the lyrics that truly deepened my understanding of what I thought Tsoi was quietly preaching in this track. Yes, Viktor Tsoi was good precisely because he created “photographic” images with words, you feel right. In Russian it is even stronger, because some of the lyrics have subtexts that are understandable to those who lived in that country and at that time. But overall, his lyrics are timeless.

you probably know it by now, but this band was active throughout 1980s and the band frontman had died in a car accident in 1990. they were like people who really sent out new ideas at the time of Soviet Union decay, and ironically enough, Viktor Tsoy, the person who brought so many new ideas and ways of thought in that old and dusty system of Soviet Union died just one year before the state collapsed without seeing really how much momentum his ideas have gotten. He became a musical legend and even new generations still listen to his songs not to mention those who were young during his lifetime.
