sounds like you used to stiff of a PVC. It needs to be 1/2" irrigation PVC. It could be your PVC was old and brittle too. Newer PVC works better. Let me know if you have any further questions

Im definitely doing this this years but wouldn't it be easier to just put the lights on, and secure with zip ties or hot glue even, BEFORE putting the arch up, like before putting it onto the rebar anchors? Then they also won't slide down the pvc pipe over the next month. Or is there a specific reason why not?
I believe that it is just personal preference. I keep them separate so that I can disassemble everything easily without the need to cut zip ties and stuff. The lights take just a few minutes to put on and once on I have not dealt with them slipping down. Your method totally works too.
It will sway, but nothing that makes it dangerous and it stands well enough that it won't hit anyone walking down the sidewalk. We get pretty strong winds here and we have never had a major issue.
TC Leahy Each arch is composed of two pieces of 1/2" PVC pipe that you can get at Home Depot (10' length's I believe). The rebar is whatever size you think will be adequate. I used 3' lengths that are hammered into the ground 1'. These were precut pieces that I bought at Home Depot. I would probably recommend using at least 3/8" rebar.

Just glad he didn't run that rebar through a water line, gas line, or buried electrical cable. "Call before you dig" is a serious thing, particularly when driving rebar in the ground within 25 feet of the street.
Only driving the rebar about 12". Most utilities are deeper than this. The only real concern would be irrigation, but I installed them so i knew where to avoid. If there is a concern of shallow utilities then yes, have the property surveyed to mark lines.
Did you solve the problem? They will snap if you are using old and brittle pvc pipe. I use 1/2" white irrigation pipe that I got at Home Depot. It is pretty flexible and shouldn't snap
I live in California so i don't know how they handle in extreme temps. My pvc (if stored in garage after Christmas) last about 5 years before I need to replace them due to getting brittle
You need “flexible” pvc pipe. There is a difference! Great job, excellent idea!!!

Hi Rickie. I used the LED boxed lights (I believe 50 count) that you can get at Walmart for about $5.00 per box. I used 2 boxes per arch.

What about if it really windy, does it wobble?

yes. I just use the standard length 1/2" pvc lengths from Home Depot and use 1 coupling.

Do I need to glue the coupling on the pvc pipes or will it hold without glue or pvc cement?
I don't glue them. This way I can take apart the pvc pipe to reuse for next year. Makes it easier for storing. You can glue if you prefer it that way

You are right on three strings max on regular Christmas lights which I prefer because the led lights use a whole lot more electricity
Led lights are supposed to use much less electricity than traditional lights. They are also much brighter.

This is good, however, improvements to be made: use white insulated lights and you can wound the lights first on the ground to make things easier.

Your rebar is too short. A longer once will add stability to the arch overall.
Wouldve like to see them lit at night.
