Yes some adults want relationships but not children. I think Jim's mother not waking him shows that she didn't want her son to see just how uninterested the father he looked up really was about being a parent. She's sad not just because Hawkins leaving but also that she was unable to convince her husband that their family was worth staying around for. So glad this collab happened! You and Issac are amon my fave UA-camrs and come up with great theories.

The most convincing part of this theory is that the boat WAS there waiting for him. Therefore, it couldn't have been a sudden thing for him to take off after a fight and we know it wasn't just there waiting like a bus, because it leaves the moment he steps onto the ship. Also, if it was a fight, why wouldn't that have woke up Jim instead of the sun on his face? Before this, I always thought Jim's father simply didn't see him running after him before getting on the boat.

My theory is that the fight already happened the day or night before, with Jim's mom telling Leland not to take the job that would make him be away for so long, giving him an ultimatum to choose them or the job. By the next morning, the two see each other and he leaves, making her break down into tears and wake Jim from his sleep.

@@icecreamkitty2735 It's possible. But I like the idea more that Jim's father literally up and left them behind. It's one of those "less is more", where the simplest of explanations can be more relatable. So many kids, teens, and adults can connect to a character whose parent or parents left them. If it was purely because his dad left for work somewhere else and Jim just woke up late to speak with him then the impact is not as strong, as it implies that Jim will see him again if he comes back alive. Plus, is it too much for the dude to knock on his son's door to wake him up?! Nah, he totally left them behind.

While this theory does hold weight, it actually takes away more than it gives. Jim's dad just up and abandoning his family is a very real thing that many kids go through in life, even being neglected. And it's relatable.

You guys had a much "happier" theory over Jim's father then me lol.
My theory being, Leland went on a expedition and died in war/against pirates.
And as for him leaving the family, I agree he might have had no idea what he was doing as a father and couldn't handle being such a bad dad for his son. And the ship leaving as soon as he boards, I believe maybe he waited as long as he could because Jim overslept, his mother was crying because of the waiting and the seperation, the ship left as soon as he arrived because he was really late and they had to leave.
And for not waving it could have been a way of telling Jim to move forward in life, and never look back, like he couldn't look back at his son as he left because it would prevent him from moving forward in his job, and he knew there was a chance he might never return.
    But that's just a theory! A FI----

This film is such a witty take and dare I gush: Ground breaking! re-telling. The motivations for Jim to trust Long John Silver are perfectly modernized with the single parent/absent parent families of today. Even the parrot is wittily transformed into the creature morph and the robot who has (literally) "lost his mind" make me love it even more. I just adore the film.

Speaking of which, I'm starting to think someone should make a video asking if Long John Silver might be sexist, because he tried to dethrone Captain Amelia (the character I was hugely obsessed with) because he perceived her as an oppressive tyrant and almost succeeded by kidnapping her and threatening to kill her, whereas Amelia perceived Silver as a toxic masculine stereotype who doesn't deserve to brutally take her rights as a captain away by killing her and permanently taking her place on her ship!

The Fangirl. Your theory is good bit I kinda have 1 too. We all know that work pressure is a major cause of many a marriage breakdown & Jim's dad being in the Military had a valid excuse for leaving but did not actually want to divorce cuz he still had some feelings left for his wife (even though he never showed them). Another factor is the condition P.T.S.D. (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), could Jim's dad have been a long - time sufferer of this mental disorder? If so, it would explain why he couldn't bond with his son & when he left, he perhaps knew that his condition would ruin whatever family life he had if he had chosen to stay.

I always got the impression his dad didn't say goodbye is cause he couldn't bring himself too. Some people have a hard time expressing emotions so they try avoiding situations where they have too. This doesn't mean they don't care, they just aren't comfortable showing that they care. It's really sad. =(

Maybe saying goodbye would have been to hard for him as he knew if he said goodbye to his wife and son he wouldn't be emotionally capable to go. Although he may not have invested in his family it doesn't mean that he didn't love them so when he learnt that he would have to leave soon he started distancing himself to save his mission and Jim at the same time.

Years after the events that occurred in “Treasure Planet,” Jim is in his mid-20’s to early 30’s, possibly has a wife and baby of his own, but has definitely found success in some career (whatever that may be). Leland returns, having grown up more and matured as a person, and wants to reconnect with his son; only to find out that that sorta thing is easier said than done, and…

Maybe it has been a while when I last saw the movie but I started to assume his father died. The guy that visited the house gave his mother the bad news. He was a friend of his father and came to pay his repects. Jim got up in a hury because it was the day his father was due to come back and he was excited. Then he saw the family friend leaving. The boat taking him back was due to leave soon and so the family friend was on a tight schedule to leave and didn't want to relay the bad news a second time. And the reason Jim and his mother kept saying he left was because his death was still a raw subject and they didn't want to say die aloud as a way of copeing with it.

While I think this theory of a military deployment would have added more depth to the characters the simple truth is in the art book. If you pause at 6:12 you can read most of the page. Basically Leland was always chasing money and ended up with a family he didn’t really want so he “took off for greener pastures”. It’s sad but a very realistic scenario.

  • @Eszra
    @Eszra 6 років тому +19

Also the reason Jim woke up was because he must of heard someone or something coming from the docked ship. Waking startled, adding to the fact he woke up late, and being punished by his Father leaving with saying a word. I also find that Leland may not have been a cruel man but because he married Sarah so young also must mean something. Sarah is at least 35 in the film that means that Jim's Father has been gone for 7 years by the films start. I have no doubt that Leland was a man that had one thing on his mind to make life good for his family. Only problem it was at a cost. Leland worked so long that he was distant from Jim, and in the end took what he wanted and needed to do. It's also clear that Sarah isn't getting much money from the inn, seeing is she's the only worker along with Jim. If I missed someone pardon me. This means that Leland has yet to make it on his mission. Also it's clear that Jim is taking a part from his Father, but instead of being a military man, he joins the Navy. I have no doubt that these two will come in contact again, though lets hope that Leland has matured enough not to be jealous of his own son's fame.

I relate to the I'm still here scene in a personal way. My dad was USMC and was away on deployment alot so I barely knew him and I still don't know that well him to this day. My mom had to work and raise 3 rowdy kids, one who needed extra attention since being diagnosed with autism, that child being me. When dad was around he would occasionally drink, get angry and get into a fight with mom. One day I found him passed out on the couch in a blanket of beer cans. When he was away my mom tried her best to keep us clothed, have good hygiene, and make sure we were well disciplined, AKA getting hit with a belt, sometimes in the face. My dad being gone for a good 6 to 8 months was quite for me and my siblings but my mom decided to go out and party when she had time off from work, she was 27 at the time and I didn't know then she was sleeping with all the guys she brought home, either from a party or from work. To wrap this all up one day I wanted to go see my dad leave off in an amtrak but all he said was no. To this day, I'm happy he said no, the less I know the better

What if he was going to war or he knew that the probablity of being attacked by pirates in a certain section of the galaxy was very high? I dont know. Maybe hes just a cold person who just didnt want to say goodbye to his son, could even be that Jim was not planned and his parents got married in a rush.

His dad is silver. At the end of the movie he looks up to the sky out the window(like he did in the "I'm still here" message)and the star lights up in silvers eye which mean he was casing the stars and lost his arm and legs. Also we see that silver isn't good with emotional feels so what if he left without saying goodbye to Jim he wanted to not put any emotion in it.

Though there isn't a lot of evidence, your "colonization" theory has an alternate explanation, and possibly a sadder one. Jim's father was lost in the Ethereum and his mother refuses to fully exept he's gone never telling jim hoping he would be found. Combine this with his swift departure, possibly being explained by a quick deployment for a small cargo run or a deployment to repair the space port, and you have Jim feeling more abandoned than simply morning the loss of his father.

To be honest, I always assumed that Leland had gotten married at a young age because he believed in love and Sara was pregnant. He worked in the mines and just wasn't happy with his happy. He felt overwhelmed with the family, no gratification from working in the mines, and willinly started staying out late with friends. He felt his family was a burden and it caused a lot of strain between him and Sara. Eventually an opportunity came when a merchant ship came through and he decided that he wanted to go restart. So he did, leaving his family behind.

    Good thought
But however a character is actually the hidden Mr Hawkins, John Silver. Strange right, however Jim was younger in the flashbacks and after the war, Mr Hawkins left war to receive cyborg treatment since he was likely wounded from the war and needed to return home to the Hawkins household 4 years later when Jim is 12 years old. So then he left to sign up with Captain Amelia’s ship crew with Mr Arrow. This is proven true, as at the end of the film, he gives money to Jim to restore the Benbow, possibly because he remembers his lost son. He also seems to connect with Jim, as if he already knows how to, and they even ride on a ship (mainly shown in the montage) just like you said about Jim’s bedroom. So yes John Silver is a cyborg recreation of Mr Hawkins and knows how to comfort his son in a way that shows he is Jim’s dad, Finally the case is closed!

Sure, it could have been that his dad was mean or even the whole military thing.. but maybe he didn't bother with a goodbye because he would be coming back home when his "adventure/mission" was complete.. Maybe his dad even died, and that's why he hasn't returned.. Although, based off of the book of his character, It is still more likely he can't handle the family life and decided to stay in space.. which leads back to your guy's point, this was probably his idea of making the break easier if he hadn't returned, and just left them alone altogether. 👀

Interesting theory, it does make sense but I never considered his job as a reason for him leaving. Not only is this my all time favorite Disney film but I have written multiple fanfictions about Jim, one of which involves his dad. I read something that confirmed that Leland couldn't handle the responsibility of having a family and left (no other specific reason like a job/mission), which is what I think happened. Anyway before I wrote anything I did a crazy amount of research and watched the movie repeatedly for clues (and because I love it haha). But back to the clues that led me to thinking his dad just left:
    - Jim says "he was more the taking off and never coming back sort." Now this could just be Jim's perception of his dad's job (if he was in the Royal Navy? Army?). But the way Jim bitterly describes his dad sounds more like a man who took off because he couldn't take being tied down and wanted adventure.
-A couple of sites also list Sarah as his ex-wife indicating that yes they did split but for some reason she kept the name. Why? Maybe changing her name back would be more trouble than she wanted to deal with. I know it doesn't sound like a very good reason but couldn't really think of another.
-Another site also points out that Leland was a spacer which is such a general term it could mean he did anything from military to other work to simply being a traveler.
-Leland's clothing. I know we don't really see him in the film however there is a still shot of him as he's leaving Montressor for the last time. However the clothes he's wearing aren't a uniform, in fact it's similar to what older Jim wears (v-neck baggy shirt, cargo pants, leather jacket). If he was going for a mission it wouldn't make sense for him to wear civilian clothes. Also it's hard to see but he wears his hair in a ponytail, not a hairstyle the military would allow. Remember the end of the film when Jim becomes a cadet and his rat tail is missing? Ok maybe it was tucked into his jacket collar but he likely had to cut it off due to it not being military regulation.
-When Sarah says "ever since his father left." Again the way she says it sounds more like he decided to leave and was not assigned a mission of any kind. Her voice sounds like that of a person who's been left for personal reasons not because of a job or mission.
-The day Leland leaves. Ok so you pointed out that Jim woke up and realized he was late in saying goodbye to his dad indicating that his leaving wasn't a surprise. True it wasn't, as Jim stated Leland was always taking off. But what if this was Leland leaving for good, splitting with Sarah and Jim knew that so that's why he's so panicked about not saying goodbye to his dad because he knows Leland isn't coming home. He's not leaving for a job, he's moving out (hence the rucksack) and the personal vessel waiting for him is the equivalent of a friend/colleague picking him up and taking him wherever. Now I know what you're thinking if he's moving out wouldn't he have more than just a rucksack? It's possible that he moved his other possessions out beforehand (again this is how Jim knows Leland's going for good) or since he wants to travel the galaxy he doesn't need a lot of material possessions.
-Also it doesn't seem like Leland left them with any kind of support and doesn't communicate with them which even if he was doing the whole volunteer colonization thing he'd send something back. Yes we all know Leland is selfish and doesn't seem to care at all about his family which would leave a mission like that as a perfect gateway to leave but wouldn't they at least be getting updates of some kind from someone? After he leaves it's like he just vanished.
So yeah I think Leland just left because he couldn't handle the responsibility of having a family and wanted to be on his own. I think he'd already planned it out and told his family that's why they're not shocked at his walking away. I don't think his job was a part of it. But that's just me, still enjoyed your video.

The most intense scene that will probably happen is Jim, now had a family of his own and is now a ship captain himself, is setting course for a mission or order given to him by his superiors and while cruising towards their destination, they were suddenly attacked by pirates along the way. Jim and his crew fought the invading pirates who now manage to board their ship but in the end Jim and his crew were defeated. Jim, alongside his crew, now find themselves at the mercy of their captors. They were tied down forming a circle in the middle of the ship. Suddenly, the pirate captain, a tall well built man, boarded the ship, he slowly walks towards where Jim and his crew were being tied and he and Jim look each other eye to eye. The captain, look astonishingly at Jim. He knows he'd seen Jim's face somewhere but forgets where or when he did. Jim on the other hand, looks at the bearded guy with contempt and seeing the astonished, probing look of the pirate captain, looks away from the man. Then, the pirate captain ordered his crew to take their captives along with the ship with them back to their port. Needless to say Jim and his crew were given a hard time by their captors. Some of his crew were being ordered and slaved around by these pirates. Jim himself fell victim to their taunts. One day, Jim offended a certain high ranking officer of the pirates. He was immediately punished and whipped. Suddenly, the pirate captain appeared behind the scene, curious as to what the commotion is all about and then as he move closer saw what was going on. Immediately, the captain yelled at his crew to stop what they are doing, telling them that no one is allowed to torment or punish anyone of their captives without his permission. After a short and tense dialogue with the officer who ordered Jim's whipping the pirate captain goes to Jim and help him pick himself up. Now I had lot more scene to say after all this event but its gonna take some time so I'm gonna fast things forward. So now, eventually the pirate captain and Jim find a common ground and slowly become friends. At this time Jim and his crew were no longer treated badly by the pirates and now had an understanding. So along the way, as the brotherly relationship between Jim and the pirate captain grew stronger, they now open up to each other on who they are and what's the story of each of their lives. Jim talk first, and tell his life story from the day he was a child until what he is now and as he narrates his story the pirate captain was stunned. His eyes grew wide as memories of his forgotten past came back to him like rushing flood. No wonder Jim is familiar to him, no wonder he could feel a deed connection to him, this boy Jim, whom he considered as his brother and friend is none other than his own son! Since the day he lost his way trying to follow a futile dream, since that very day he sold his whole being to do what any good man shouldn't do, since the day he became a pirate, he tried to bury his past knowing all to well that whoever he is now will only bring more sorrow and grief to those whom he deeply treasure particularly his own family. Hearing everything that Jim had said, the captain was in disbelief, he slowly back away, a look of surprise, confusion and dread on his face. Seeing this, Jim was astonished. He asked the captain what's wrong and the captain, who seemed to snap himself out, tell Jim that it was nothing and that simply gave an excuse that it is getting late and that they should rest for tomorrow, since it was late in the evening during the time the two of them talked to each other. As the captain watch Jim walk away, a feeling of sorrow hit him. As the captain turned his back to head towards his quarters, you can see a tear fall from his eye as he wept silently as he walk towards his destination... So this is all for now and I'll leave the rest of what is going to happen next to whoever of you who will read my theory on what is going to be the situation if Jim meets his father. All of those that I had written above are my speculation on how and what will be the scene if Jim finally meets his father... I kinda just had the urge to share it so yeah, here it is...🙂✌️

I feel like Leland was a surprise baby. And Leland and Sarah got married as it was the “honorable” thing. But his heart could not be tied down, and the life of being a father wasn’t for him, heck maybe he even had his own father issues.

yeah i think his father was just the immature uninvested jerk-type cuz we see in a discution with Jim and Silver in the begining of their treasure Planet journey:
John Silver: Didn't your pap ever teach you to pick your fights a bit more carefully?
    [Jim looks away]
John Silver: Your father not the teachin' sort?
Jim Hawkins: No. He was more the "taking off and never coming back" sort.

Rushing into a relationship at the age of 19 would make a potential father pretty immature and would have to grown up quickly if he wanted to. If his heart was set on the stars then he shouldn’t have married so soon, but of course we would have Treasure Planet.

I already figured out that Jim's dad probably didn't want to be a father & regretted getting married too young that's why he left that's what you get for being immature. I like to think maybe Jim ran into his dad years later after Jim grew up & Jim was angry & bitter at his dad leaving him his dad says he wasn't ready to be a father & it was too much for him. Jim just said "Well you shouldn't have married my mother."

This movie was already sad enough, but now that we have at least some form of canon evidence for why Jim's dad left, it's even sadder. I think the truest theory is that Leland just didn't want a family. He wasn't able to take responsibility for it and the first chance he got to leave, he took it. It sounds at face value like he's a jerk, and to be fair, he is, but some people aren't fit to be parents. And sometimes they don't realize this until after the fact.

I like this theory. I will say that the phrase "his father/mother left" is a common euphamism for married people who are divorced/separated, especially around their kids. My parents were separated for most of my life, so I heard the phrase a lot.
Even so, I like this theory and will add that it's possible that Mrs. Hawkins was crying because this was a battle that she's been fighting with her husband for ages: don't leave for the navy/whatever new job that will take him away from his family for a long time, maybe forever if he gets killed. It works with Leland's personality as metnioned in that book - I know quite a few guys that joined the military because of fanciful notions of traveling, being a hero, etc and not really considering how tough the job will be and (if they're in a relationship or having a famility) not really considering the impact it could have on those they left behind. If this is the case for Leland, it really speaks to the note about immaturity.

For a film that's over 20 years old....the way the film portrays the effects of abandonment on a young person's psyche, especially on a male psyche especially if the father abandons the mother and child first without making the story revolve around it myopically is masterful storytelling.

I love Treasure Planet so much.. As a kid, I assumed that Jim's father died.. I know very little about the military but I know that you're able to contact your family and friends at least occasionally.. and since we don't hear anything about him contacting them, I kind of assumed he was dead.. but if he was dead, then I feel that everyone would talk about him as if he were dead..but they don't, they just say "he left".. and you guys mentioned that he was young when he became a father, so maybe while he's away, he's trying to come to terms with everything? If you have kids when you're young, you sometimes don't know who you are yet, and it can take a very long time to find out who you are.
Something I really loved about Treasure Planet, is that Jim does gain a sort of father figure, Silver. I mean..yeah..Silver does do pirate-y things and is mean or outright cruel and cold toward Jim, but he can never find it in himself to abandon Jim or hurt him.. at least, from what I can recall from the movie.. It feels like Silver helps Jim deal with his issues and gain closure on his father leaving him, and the scene where he gives Jim gold and jewels to help his mother? OMG my heart.. Oops..I'm ranting and raving about the movie..sorry

In the previous montage, we saw that Jim's dad left (or gave up) his family to leave for an unknown reason. Maybe Silver is mentioning that
If Jim's dad left for the space Navy, that could make sense, as he may have been space-ship-wrecked, marooned, or may have mutinied the captain of a ship he was poseted on (Giving up old life for his own ambitions) this could explain how he lost limbs
