Jeremiah O’Brien
Our new Naval Legends episode is dedicated to Jeremiah O'Brien, a U.S. Liberty-class transport ship. She was involved in the famous operations off the coasts of Normandy and Okinawa. The ship is currently based in San Francisco, where she is continuing her service as a living museum. She even sails around the bay from time to time.
The scale of manufacturing the Liberty ships was absolutely massive. In our video, you'll learn the origins of the ship's name and project's history, which has its design roots in numerous shipyards across the United States. We'll tell you about the modularization system, steam engine, and principles of construction. We'll also visit the boiler room and discuss the technical characteristics of Jeremiah O'Brien.

We hope you enjoyed this episode! In the next 2 weeks we will be releasing voiceovers in additional languages!
You missed the fact she went back to Normandi in the 80s
Fun fact: The O'Brian's engines stood in for Titanic's in James Camron's movie.
I knew they were strangely familar.
Yes they are closely related in design and function cool detail
The more I watch videos about WWII era ships, I just thank goodness for the people who have made such an effort over the years to save ships of all kinds to still have to see today!
I'll never forget the time my grandfather and I toured the O' Brien, and one of the staff got to talking with my grandpa about their experiences in the armed forces. He eventually offered to show us the off-limits space in one of the upper holds which they've turned into a machine shop. They were restoring a 20mm gun, and they had a big yellow generator which we were told had apparently been taken from the nearby Alcatraz Island. We also saw a plastic skeleton someone put in one of the giant lower holds, and I got to aim the bow gun at various buildings in San Francisco.
Easily the coolest part of the ship to me though was the functional engine. It's a marvel of engineering, and the fact that these things were built very cheap and very quickly yet this one is in near-perfect condition speaks to the quality of the people who built it.
Jeremiah is definitely a survivor. Her usual mooring place, Pier 45, went up in a 4-alarm fire in the early morning in 2020, with her and the submarine USS Pampanito still alongside. Fires were burning high and furiously right next to Jeremiah, and thanks to the efforts of the SFFD, Jeremiah was spared with minimal damage. Pampanito too was unharmed if you're wondering.
Her sailing abilities are nothing to scoff at either. Jeremiah is the only large ship of the D-Day Armada to come back to Normandy on the 50th anniversary in 1994, sailing SF to France and back under her own power.
Side note, I had the pleasure of visiting her once, and the 3 inch gun on the bow was able to be rotated and elevated with limitations. Don't know if it was allowed to play with it, didn't see no sign, if there was one. After a while I left the gun pointed roughly to my sister's high school.
What’s this? A new episode of Naval Legends? Great show Gentlemen!
We hope you enjoyed this one!
There is always a spirit that is in every ship.
Indeed there is, we are glad more people will get to experience this one's at least through our video!
Amazing work guys! Well done!
Love this ship. Took my kids on board & they loved every second of exploring it. I especially loved the engineers station in the engine room. Made me feel like I was in my own office. Felt & smelled terrific! This boat felt alive!
We hope you and your kids had a great time, thanks for sharing this with us!
Jingles said it best in an older video of his,he was talking about Japans attack on Pearl Harbor and the ship building capacity of the US and Japan,he said "Japan, what the hell were you thinking?"
And thats exactly right, even Yamamato said basically the same thing, they could never hope to build a fleet as fast as the US,absolutely insane how fast these and other massive ships were put out,and these are fantastic videos
thank you WG for making documentaries like this giving light to ships that have been ot would have been forgotten in time... thank you for keeping the memories of the fallen alive with videos such us this♥️♥️
Excellent video on an amazing ship. I was honored to be a member of the Unicorns Dance Band which for more than a decade was considered the Official Band of the JOB. Our 17-piece band played Big Band music from the 40’s on top of the cargo holds just in front the pilot house during her voyages around the SF Bay. I personally played Bass with the Band and thoroughly enjoyed volunteering along with my fellow musicians on the ship for more than 100 sailings.
My grandfather, a graduate of Kings Point , served on this vessel during WWII and made 2 trips, I believe, both to Omaha Beach during the invasion. I am so proud to have this heritage in my bloodline 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🦅🦅🦅🦅
So wonderful to stumble across this. I had the honor of touring this ship in 1994 in Portsmouth England at the D-Day plus 50 ceremonies. I was crew on the USS George Washington and drove small boats between the J. O'brien, the Brittania and our ship at anchorage. I have amazing memories of that week. Thanks for stirring them up!
the brave souls that operated these vessels were nothing short of INSANELY brave. God Bless them all
When ever i saw her in San Francisco, she was absolutely beautiful, both her and the USS Pampanito, a right Venerable boat in her own right.
A few naval legends videos I think you guys should make
USS Wisconsin
USS Casin young
Brooklyn class cruisers
USS Intrepid
Clemson class
Montana class
USS Hazard
I love the documentaries and history of both the ships and era. The background and research is spot on!
Awesome video! What a cool documentary on these unsung hero ships. You guys do the absolute best naval documentaries on UA-cam by a nautical mile. Thanks for this content!
I really like the Naval legends series. I want to see more of them
Yes ! A new episode. I cant get enough of these videos. This was amazing as always ❤
My grandma helped build liberty ships in Portland, Oregon at the Kaiser shipyards during ww2. She had many fond memories from those four years. She often recalled how they would pump out new ships daily like clockwork.
A ship with character! A film with soul! ...And an amazing music, fellows! I want to get a soundtrack of this one))
Toured it during fleet week in SF when I was just 13 years old with my grandfather. I love its still here to share with my kids
It takes gut of steel to man these ships in waters filled with enemies. Salute to those sailors.
Yay its back! i love this series
My uncle was an Ensign on a Liberty ship during WWII. He told me how a couple times they played a trick on a messman that would bring food up to the bridge so they could eat on watch. They waited till he was coming up the ladder with a big tray of food, then turned the wheel hard over... The ship leaned over suddenly and the loaded tray went Crashing down! They did it one more time and the chief engineer came Snarling and cursing up to the bridge "What the Hell are you doing up here?!?! You're blowing the guts out of the steering gear! He knew they were fooling around and warned them not to do it again unless there was a torpedo coming.
WOW A LIVING LEGEND AND IT STILL WORKING 👏✊
Excellent documentary
love these stories!
Do one for the LST325 its the last fully operational Landing Ship Tank in It’s WW2 State. LST’s are what won the war
My Grandfather served on the USS Thurston AP-77. Sicily, D-day, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and operation Magic Carpet.....
Glad they're doing new NLs
Amazing channel!
Well done! Отличная работа!
Good Video WG, well done :)
muy lindo el video gracias
The transport ships were basically the true warriors of the war. Slow, vulnerable, and yet provided support for a huge part of the Allied war efforts, especially for the Soviet Union.
0:00-0:35 song: Nobody Gonna Save My Soul.
nice 👍👍
Keep em comming WG
Weren't they putting out the last part of the bonus code today?
Now that we've seen the Jeremiah O'Brien, will the USS Pampanito be featured next?
I’ve been there!!!!! Such a cool ship!!
It sure is magnificent, how did you like your visit?
@@WorldofWarshipsOfficialChannel it was just incredible, seeing the engine room, the rusting old AA mounts, and even the old sailors quarters. Would absolutely love to see it fully refurbished
@@thesharkster1718 That sounds like quite the sight, thank you for sharing that with us!
@@WorldofWarshipsOfficialChannel have you done the USS Wisconsin?
By the way, the German cruiser Stier had to be scuttled by her crew after the intense engagement from the Stephen Hopkins.
Are the original log books still available and intact?
If in SF worth the visit.
I have been to this ship
Can you Ols look at the Dutch minesweeper Abraham Crijnsen
C'est bien là, toute la puissance salvatrice des USA .
bunu sevdim
If after dropping an episode of naval legends like this on a liberty ship and they don't make convoy a permanent addition or liberty ships available to play as regularly I'm gonna be so upset
They are in many operations tho
@@sinoskopyasky The ships called "LIBERTY" in World of Warships are actually Victory Ships. Hopefully WG adds actual Liberty Ships like the Jeremiah O' Brien and John Brown to the game at some point.
when are Liberty Ships going to have torpedo bombers?
probably too late , but what was the code guys please , been on grandad duties the past week.

20 thousand miles range? seriously? xD
Kann mir einer den kompletten Code sagen? Danke im voraus
The ship needs a palm tree. 😏
Why is the ship signalling that it is altering it's course to port?

這就是護送艦其中一艘吧...這名字我有印象...
這是個非常好的故事 我非常喜歡!
