The aperture thing depends on the lens that you buy. the cheaper lenses don't have this feature, but in no other digital camera system (apart from Leica) can I select the aperture without looking. Essential for street photographers.
Nice review, three issues: (1) You guys tested one of the oldest and slowest lenses, so you can't complain about AF being slow :) (2) As for the low burst rate, that's intentional. Fuji created the XT10 by compromising or downgrading some of XT1's features to make the XT10 a cheaper alternative. One compromise being lower internal memory, which in turn means slower burst rate. If you want a high rate then go with XT1 which also supports fast read/write speeds because of its UHS-II memory support (XT10 only support slower UHS-I memory cards) (3) Higher ISO switches off RAW because it's not supported by the sensor - it's a sensor limitation and nothing that Fuji can do in firmware. It's boosted in the JPEG by software post processing - nothing that can be done there.
+Najib Wong in general but not always, the older the slower, the more glass a lens has = more to move for the AF motor. Also the wider focal length is generally easier to focus because there is more room for error... the new 16mm is pretty snappy despite its size, the new 35mm f2 is supposed to be fast, the cheap 27mm is decently fast since there is barely any glass to move for the AF motor. I've been happy with the 23mm as well....I don't think you should choose the lens based on fasted AF but most of these work pretty well in bright daylight. The old 35mm haunts a little too much for my taste when indoors but it's still a fantastic lens and you can find it for $400 usually when Fuji has a sale. that said, the camera settings itself plays a big role as well. You want to make sure you are in the PDAF region of the sensor for fastest focus (that's the 5x3 points in the middle of the frame) otherwise the camera will use the slower contrast detect focus. Disable face detection (or else it won't use PDAF), and enable high performance mode in the menus. If you want the camera to focus between shots, then enable focus tracking, change to CL or CH modes and disable the ES or MS+ES shutter (electronic shutter or its combination).
Great review! I love, love my X-T10's image quality and it's awesome physical knobs. The image quality is the best on any APS-C system, without a question for me given my experience. My biggest beef is its size and its autofocus, which is good but not great. I use my X-T10 as a pro photographer and I'm entirely satisfied that I made the right choice saving the money over the X-T1 to invest in fuji's amazing lenses and hold out for a new flagship Fuji camera. I only wish they'd make my day and build a full-frame system with their same physical dials to compete with the Sony A7 line. I can dream...
+Scotty Turner In terms of the full frame, it depends on what you are doing with the camera and what lenses you use. For instance, Fuji has a 35 1.4, whereas the similarly sized Sony is a 2.8, meaning shallower DOF from the fuji, not the sony. Granted there is a 35 1.4 for sony now too, but it is huge.

I just saw a video by tony northup explaining that when using a crop sensor camera you should apply the crop factor to the apperture as well. 35mm f1.4 will actually translate to 52mm f2.2 due to difference in sensor size. i dont know if this is true for fuji lenses but it's certainly a nice thing to keep in mind. Dick, Tony is definitely right. But most smaller full frame lenses would be a 1.8 max aperture anyway, so the 2.2 equivalent is not all that different.
+Dick Tan Actually Tony is not completely right in every area. In terms of Depth of Field that holds true. But Light intensity(T-Stop) that theory does not apply. For example T1.8 rating on Full frame lenses is the same as on the APS-C, APS-H, MFT sensors etc. That is why T-stops are the rating of choice for Cinematographers they can swap lenses on a camera and know that the exposure is accurate following T-stops, Shutter speed and ISO are the same. So actually converting the f-stops to sensor size is a bit "useless" I think because Depth of Field is intangible. Can you scientifically predict how D.O.F looks at f1.4 full frame compared to f2.8 on APS-C compared to f4 on MFT from shot to shot (on the final print or screen shot)? Yeah I would not be too concerned about converting f-stops along with Angle of View because that area of technicality does not seem important to getting good exposed pictures. True, but if you watch tony's video he acknowledges that exposure would be the same at 1.8 on both lenses, this is merely speaking about equivalent DOF.

Watch our review of the A7II. It is a great camera, but the lenses will be significantly more than the Fuji. Not that I'm saying that answers the question, but it certainly changes the necessary budget. We haven't tried the xpro2 yet, but really look forward to doing it in the future.
Nice job on the review! I mainly shoot MFT & Canon, but the colours & B&W images straight out of the Fujis are gorgeous. I like the idea of less time in post, so there might be a Fuji in my future, especially if they up their video game like Olympus recently has. You have a cool channel! All the best.

Thanks for this great video, I have only one question regarding new X-T10 AF modes. In either Zone or Wide/Tracking modes, When half-pressing shutter release, sometime several autofocus points (green boxes) are highlighted in green showing they achieved focus - my question is: which one of those boxes the camera is actually locking into for the exposure ? Sometimes there will be several boxes highlighted in a zone or wide/tracking - some will lock on objects in the front and some locked on objects in the rear - when I fully press the shutter release - which of those boxes is actually used by the camera as the focus point ? Couldn't find explanation for this in all Fuji manuals

Fuji's wifi implementation is better than any other camera I have used. Have you ever used something you felt was better? Sony's attempt was terrible. Eye-Fi cards are annoying by having to protect an image to send it.
+iforgotmyusername0 the issue with ours was that we had already paired it to one person's phone, switching it to someone else's was the unclear and confusing part. That also didn't change the impression that some other brands have better apps once you are connected. -Josh

Great job, Josh and CP team! Actually saw you at the Photo Plus Expo (from a distance while you were in some serious talks at a vendor booth, so I didn't want to interrupt). Funny thing about the Fuji cameras - I'd visited the Sony, Olympus, and Panasonic booths all before Fuji. When I picked up the X-T1 (the X-T10's big brother) I actually completely forgot about the aperture control on the LENS and the shutter speed adjustment on one of the top dial. (shaking my head at myself). But once you remember that, they're mostly easy cameras to enjoy, at least for an entry level camera. BTW, as an eyeglasses wearer, I can confirm that although the newer Fuji cameras are known for having BIG bright EVFs, you're still going to lose some of that picture-window effect due to the eye relief simply not being long enough. The shallow eyecup is also a little problematic, and I can see some eyeglass wearers of premium frames and lenses potentially damaging them during the course of a day of photography if not careful.
+TheCameraProject I haven't gone Fuji. For personal work I have a small investment in Olympus gear (I love their glass and do a decent job working around the noise). But I'm also considering some of the Sony cameras as future possibilities. Interestingly, for I've been able to successfully put the Olympus E-M1 to work in the studio for certain applications both on the wedding day and for portraits. Each of the major players in mirrorless are definitely good ones to watch for pros and enthusiasts alike. A lot of my pro colleagues are definitely starting to take notice.
+Ulysses Ashton Yeah, I think I'm about to pick up an EM-5II myself. I really like the Olympus cameras for photo applications! Great to use with small primes or even something like the 14-150 for a great walk-around / vacation lens. I can't see why the Oly's would be great in studio. For street photography stuff, I like the little primes. You could easy carry 3 or 4 primes with you without much weight consequence. Check out my street stuff on instagram. @leftlenscapon The sony's are also very tempting, but once you get zooms involved, it's a big camera again. I'm looking for something that I will actually take with me instead of leaving it at home. I use the sony rx100 for that purpose now, and it's great too.

With all the capabilities of the E-M1 (and then some), but with a lighter footprint and weight, it's understandably been a super popular seller for Olympus. I think you'll love it. well, there is a lot to consider. Do you want a fixed lens or interchangeable lens camera? What do you shoot for the most part? I assume the budget is including lenses as well as camera? Are you open to buying used or an older model?
+tesh13 The x-t1 is definitely a bit older at this point, so we are less likely to do a review of it. That said, if an X-T2 were to come out, we'd definitely try to get our hands on that.

+DieselsArmy1 We probably won't review the XT-1 at this point because it's getting on the older side. However, the two cameras will be the same from an image quality stand point. Just different handling. XT1 is weather sealed and has a better buffer I believe.
Hi, I'm torn between Fuji x-t10 and Olympus em d e-m10 mark II. I want to get the Fuji but it seems that it is weak in terms of video shooting, autofocus, and don't have image stabilization. Olympus has good autofocus and has image stabilization but the photo quality is better in Fuji. Please help me decide. I don't know much on cameras and photography and I would really appreciate your recommendations. Thanks!
sorry i missed this question somehow. I've tested both the olympus em5ii and the fuji xt10 and went with the olympus. It would be very similar to the 10ii. If you want decent video and image stabilization, than the olympus is your camera. Though some fuji lenses may have IS, most don't. Yes, the fuji will be better in low light, and will give you somewhat easier to achieve shallow depth of field. If you are shooting landscapes or daytime, you probably won't notice a major different. Fuji does have nice jpeg processing if you won't be shooting raw and would prefer to take jpeg straight out of camera. Olympus jpegs are nice too, but don't have as many cool looking options as the fuji film simulations. The olympus system will be less expensive overall, because the lenses on m43 are generally a bit cheaper. Overall, if you are new to photography, i'd point you toward the olympus. As I said, I own an olympus myself and really like it.
Great review! But if you were to choose right now between Sony A6000 and Fujifilm XT10, which one would you pick? Let's say we're looking for a camera that we can bring everyday and that can produce good quality images right when you take that camera out from your sling bag and take quick snapshot for the moment?
they can both fill the role you are looking for. If you are into street, I would say there are more small quality primes available for fuji than for sony. So get something like the 35 f2, which is supposed to be much quicker than the 1.4 we tested with, or the upcoming 23 f2, and just leave that on the camera and have it in your bag at all time. You could totally do the same with the sony, but for street, and the style of the camera itself, for some reason there is something more appealing about the fuji. That said, the sony autofocus may be faster and it certainly will have better video. But with street in mind, something about the fuji calls to me more.
Was really leaning towards A6000, I thought it's fast autofocus just really makes me comfortable when I encounter unexpected moments along the way. Do they both perform equally in low light? Have you compared them?
i have not done a head to head, and have actually had less time with the a6000 in general, though we just reviewed the a6300. By perform... do you mea focus or image quality. The Xt10 really hunts with the 35 1.4 in low light, but i think that is partially a lens issue. That said, it takes nice fairly low-noise images. The sony will also hunt in low-light, but it probably is still faster than the fuji. I'd say if you are leaning sony, go sony. My only suggestion would be to check out what lenses you might want in the future and make sure sony makes an E mount aps-c lens for the purposes. Most of the full frame lenses will make the a6000 bigger and bulkier than it needs to me. So for instance, there is a somewhat affordable sony 35mm 1.8 for apc, which is a nice 50mm equivalent, but if you want a 35mm equivalent, their 23 is very pricey. That said, you might be able to get a third party lens to fill the need.
+supperandjazz We touch on video quality a bit, but no it is not a good video camera. If you just need the occasional family video it could be ok, but definitely not the camera for any kind of serious film making. I've heard the xpro-2 is the first fuji cam to have some decent video quality. -Josh
Wi-Fi has connection problems with iOS. I see this problem with my iPad air but not with my android devices. Also, try high performance mode with the focus light enabled to get better low light focusing.

i find wifi to actually be smooth as a breeze, and shooting in wifi remote added a new dimension to shooting without being noticed. nice vid though, even better if the lens used for review is the kit.
They've updated the wifi app since we did this review. We noticed on our test of the xpro 2 it had been made a lot better. As for the kit lens, we actually did have the 18-55 and did shoot with it, just didn't have it mounted to the camera for this shoot. -Josh
sorry just saw this comment. we haven't reviewed the xe2s, but its basically a rebranded and slightly feature updated xe2. I'd go with the x-t10 unless the form factor is a deal killer.

Hi josh i am having the nikon d90 and for portrait i use the 50mm f1.8d and for wildlife i work with nikon 70-200mm f 2.8g vr ii lens. I own the nikon d90 and both the lenses for almost 2 years now they suits my need but at a cost of bulk and weight. I am right now looking for a light in weight camera and came across mirrorless camera line up. I love both the features of olympus omd em5 mark 2 as well as the fujifilm xt10. I had been surfing the internet and came across many videos which claims that the fuji lens line up are the best in terms of sharpness and the best kit lens they provide with their cameras as fuji xt10 comes with 18-55mm f2.8-4.0. I havent used any touch screen cameras till now but it wont be a problem for me to adapt to it. I knew that both the cameras fuji xt10 and olympus em5 mark 2 has their pros and cons but since both has near about the same price range i inclined more towards fuji. So help me in out with this dilemma your suggestions will help me in getting a good camera system.
So there are so many factors to consider so I'll give you what I see as the pros and cons of both systems. I won the Olympus EM5II, but I like the fujis as well. Though if I was to buy a fuji right now I'd go with the XT-2 or XT-20 over the XT-10 as its no longer the latest. That said here is what I see in each team's camp: Fuji: The xt-10 is a great mix of size, weight, and image quality. Its a small camera, but with the optional grip, it becomes much easier to hold as we mention in the review. There are great small primes, like the 35 f2, 23 f2, and 50f2 which maintain that great balance of size, weight, style, and image quality. I haven't shot with the f2 line of primes, but I have used the 35 1.4, and 23 1.4 and really liked them, that said, the 35 was pretty slow in terms of focusing speed, and thus my suggestion of the f2 line. Fuji's control system is a bit to get used to coming from Nikon. My previous camera was a d7000. But I do like it for the most part. It's just different. The image quality and jpegs from the fujis are fantastic, and low light is good. You can get the same image quality or better than you are used to from your Nikons. My downside with fujis which is many people's upside is that they are decidedly old-school. Meaning, they don't embrace the touch screen on a lot of their cameras, though they are getting better. Once you use a camera with one, you realize how nice it is to navigate your photos, menus, and use it to set your focus point. Panasonic and olympus cameras excel here, with Panasonic doing it best in my opinion. The other thing I wish they had was sensor based stabilization. You can handhold olympus cameras to ridiculously low shutter speeds with the sensor based stabilization. I mean shutter speeds of 1/4, 1/2, and even sometimes 1 second without a tripod. This allows for better images at lower iso's without a tripod, which more than makes up for the smaller sensor, unless you have a fast moving subject. Olympus: A great blend of style, size, weight, modern, and old. You get the classic styling, small size, lightweight with the modern advances. Touch screen, sensor stabilization, modes like live time and live composite. I carry my Olympus around way more than I ever did with my Nikon. I feel better holding it, not because it feels better in my hand, but because I don't feel like a dorky tourist, the same goes for the fuji. There are a ton of great lenses for the micro four thirds system, pretty much every focal length is covered. Especially in your use case. Talking lenses, the 18-55 for fuji was a really nice lens. I really appreciate a kit lens with a faster aperture like that and its still very small and light. In the US I don't think EM5ii comes bundled, but what you get depends on your priorities. I like the 14-150 for a do it all travel lens. If you want a great lens that is super light and has an amazing range, I love it. That said, it's a daytime lens, not super fast. Not a problem though, because packing extra lenses can still stay super small and light. For your portrait lens, I'd go with the Olympus 45 1.8. Nice shallow depth of field even from the smaller sensor. For your 70-200 replacement, you would go with either the Olympus 40-150 (80-300 equiv) or the panasonic 35-100. The olympus is a bit more rugged and has a longer zoom, but the panasonic is much smaller and lighter. For my night time 35mm equivalent for low light (actually it's on my camera almost all of the time), I have the olympus 17 1.8 which is fantastic as well. And if you want a fast zoom, the Olympus 12-40 is great. It is a bit big and heavy for the camera, but built like a tank, and compared to my d7000 with a kit lens, it's still light!
I'm sure you'll be happy with either of them. Not sure your timeline but I've heard rumors of an em10iii coming soon, which although it would be lower in the lineup would be 2 years newer tech than the em5ii, so it could be worth looking into those rumors and seeing what your timeline to buy is.
Having dilema between fuji xt10 and a6000. New to camera. Going to use it for picture mostly. I need help to choose. Also can i use different cheap lenses for fuji xt10?
Be more specific. By that, I mean what kind of cheap lenses are you hoping for? 3rd party lenses that are made for the camera? Cheap fuji lenses themselves? 3rd party old lenses that will be adapted and all manual? They are very different cameras with very different controls and form factors. Fuji is all about physical knobs and dials. Meaning there is a dedicated shutter speed dial on the camera, dedicated exposure compensation, most of their lenses have aperture rings on lens. Fuji has a distinctly retro look. Sony's line is much more modern minimalistic. Not necessarily good or bad, just depends on which controls you like. PASM dial on sony for program auto shutter and manual. Different controls on fuji that can essentially do the same things. I would say fuji cares more about their APS-C lens line than sony does as sony has been making full frame lenses the past couple of years. Sony has some nice tiny small zooms, but fuji's zooms are probably better quality than those tiny sony ones. There are bigger sony ones with better quality too. Its a tough call. If I wanted a good all around camera to recommend to a new shooter, I'd probably suggest the a6000. If I was buying a camera for myself, I might go fuji and pair it with a nice small prime like the 35 f2 as a great street photography camera. All and all, there are a lot of variables.

tough call. lots of variables. The main variable will be which body style you like and which lens system you want to be in. Em10ii will have same image quality as em5ii. G7 should be fairly on par with both of those. G7 is more of a dslr style body. Em10ii has more of a retro style and is smaller, but lacks the grip of a g7. XT10 is similar style body to em10ii, though probably a hair larger. I think of the group, I'd buy the olympus, but I own olympus so I'm biased. The panasonic will have the best video and best menu and touch screen interface in my opinion. The Xt10 will have best low-light and best shallow depth of field. The lenses will be slightly larger for the fuji than for panasonic or olympus. Video will be BY FAR the worst on the fuji. Also you have to price out what type of lenses you will buy and how much that will cost. If you did a 3 zoom kit, how much would that cost for each camera. So a wide angle, a standard lens, and a telephoto. Of course, you could also do an all in one, like the 14-150 to cover that range, though it's not super wide. So may factors to consider!
+TheCameraProject i made my decision to buy olympus em10 mark ii over a6000because of its build quality the retro look and also slow motion 4k video and more. But what i dont get is it has two different view finder, one is slr and one electronic. Which one is better? And will it do any difference to the video and image quality? Also i dont know which kit lense to get. The RII 14-42mm kit lense or The 14-42 EZ lens? Ist worth buying the EZ for additional 150-200$? I hope my decision is right on buying this camera soon.
Josh, can i suggest something ? you should really evenly distribute scripts for both you and alison. it's a great explanation, however, it would be more exciting if you both could just like discuss, you know, you throw an opinion and she will disagree or agree plus give explanation as to why, and vice versa. furthermore, you might want to consider giving high and low tones while speaking, to keep your audiences enthusiastic i am a big fan of naturalistic, btw. this is not really a suggestion, but you may want to see Before Trilogy and apply the naturalistic talks while walking. no offense, a good video, but standing stills while talking to camera (and whoever not talking is making weird standing still gesture) is too weird and some might find it boring. i am gonna subscribe and see how you grow with times, keep up 👍
The whole point of this line of Fujifilm cameras are the manual controls? To say they make it hard to shoot with to me just seems lazy. The manual controls are the bomb! Further if you want more features move up to the xt2 or xpro2. This little xt10 is entry level, so complaining about a lack of this and a lack of that just seems unwarranted for what the camera is.
It depends on who you are as a shooter. If you are someone who just saw a review saying the best entry level mirrorless camera is a fuji xt-10, and based on that you want to buy it, you may want to know what it will and won't have compared to say a panasonic, olympus, or sony competitor. There are absolutely those who will love this style of control, and others who just read a headline on the verge saying its the best mirrorless camera, and they might be looking for some more info on that camera. All we are trying to get at is that there are features other cameras have, that are appealing to some people that this camera does not. That doesn't make it bad, and for a certain photographer it makes it exactly what they are looking for!
They are shooting with a contrast detect AF camera at night in pitch black and complaining about the AF. Oh boy. Do we really need yet another camera fetish YT channel?
It wasn't a comment about just that one moment of shooting, we had been testing for a couple of weeks. Also, even in our test shots like at the florist, there is a lot of lighting under that awning. So no, not pitch black. As for contrast based AF, compare it to panasonic or olympus contrast AF and you will find those faster in low-light with their equivalent lenses.
TheCameraProject I have an Olympus OMD EM-10 II, it also struggles in poor light and IQ happens to suck compared to the Fuji cameras. I tested the XT-10 at B&H and used to own an X-Pro1 and they are lovely cameras.
You are right! They are lovely cameras! We talk about the great image quality, the better shallow DOF, and better low light image quality in this review. Fuji low light image quality is at least a stop better than m43, if not 2! As for low-light focusing, they both have their struggles. That said, if you take the 35 1.4, which we were testing with here, and compare it to the olympus 25 1.8 (and I'm sure the new 25 1.2 would be way better, but we haven't tested), in our experience the m43 low-light focusing was faster. That said, we have since heard that the 35 1.4 we were testing with is notoriously a slow lens, so this could be more lens specific than camera specific. I've heard great things about the new 35 f2.
biased against fuji in my eyes, who wants to do a review in darkness. the young lady looked annoyed, like she had had an argument with her partner before the shoot. A review in good light ear marking some of the superb fuji lenses might have been more apt. The quality of the j pegs with the better fuji lenses has to be seen to be believed, honest.
very nice review of the cemara, but one tip for people that are looking for a camera: the speed of the photo's per second only maters if you are going for sport photo's or car races, its not a bad thing if a cemara can onley make 3 photo's per secon instead of 6 because who is gonne give a crap if you shoot your family pictures or even model pictures :D witch you do far more often than make photo's of some fast things. but thanx for this fid it was really helpfull :D

the girl is super hot but she lives in a digital world. the camera is mainly for manual shooters of course . for people who wants to shoot creative like me. i love manual shooting. i want to be precise . she should do more review on just point and shoot and she will be perfect for it. definitely fujifilm is for advance users. and yes video does suck. but with a little help with premiere or hit film. it will do well. but my point is. that girl is hot. =)

The aperture thing depends on the lens that you buy. the cheaper lenses don't have this feature, but in no other digital camera system (apart from Leica) can I select the aperture without looking. Essential for street photographers.

Nice review, three issues:
(1) You guys tested one of the oldest and slowest lenses, so you can't complain about AF being slow :)
(2) As for the low burst rate, that's intentional. Fuji created the XT10 by compromising or downgrading some of XT1's features to make the XT10 a cheaper alternative. One compromise being lower internal memory, which in turn means slower burst rate. If you want a high rate then go with XT1 which also supports fast read/write speeds because of its UHS-II memory support (XT10 only support slower UHS-I memory cards)
(3) Higher ISO switches off RAW because it's not supported by the sensor - it's a sensor limitation and nothing that Fuji can do in firmware. It's boosted in the JPEG by software post processing - nothing that can be done there.
What's the fastest (or fast-value) AF lens for the xt10?
+Najib Wong The 18-55 was definitely quicker. The 10-24 quicker as well. The new 35 should definitely be quicker, but I haven't tested it.
+Najib Wong in general but not always, the older the slower, the more glass a lens has = more to move for the AF motor. Also the wider focal length is generally easier to focus because there is more room for error... the new 16mm is pretty snappy despite its size, the new 35mm f2 is supposed to be fast, the cheap 27mm is decently fast since there is barely any glass to move for the AF motor. I've been happy with the 23mm as well....I don't think you should choose the lens based on fasted AF but most of these work pretty well in bright daylight. The old 35mm haunts a little too much for my taste when indoors but it's still a fantastic lens and you can find it for $400 usually when Fuji has a sale.
that said, the camera settings itself plays a big role as well. You want to make sure you are in the PDAF region of the sensor for fastest focus (that's the 5x3 points in the middle of the frame) otherwise the camera will use the slower contrast detect focus. Disable face detection (or else it won't use PDAF), and enable high performance mode in the menus. If you want the camera to focus between shots, then enable focus tracking, change to CL or CH modes and disable the ES or MS+ES shutter (electronic shutter or its combination).

Great review! I love, love my X-T10's image quality and it's awesome physical knobs. The image quality is the best on any APS-C system, without a question for me given my experience. My biggest beef is its size and its autofocus, which is good but not great. I use my X-T10 as a pro photographer and I'm entirely satisfied that I made the right choice saving the money over the X-T1 to invest in fuji's amazing lenses and hold out for a new flagship Fuji camera. I only wish they'd make my day and build a full-frame system with their same physical dials to compete with the Sony A7 line. I can dream...
+Scotty Turner In terms of the full frame, it depends on what you are doing with the camera and what lenses you use. For instance, Fuji has a 35 1.4, whereas the similarly sized Sony is a 2.8, meaning shallower DOF from the fuji, not the sony. Granted there is a 35 1.4 for sony now too, but it is huge.

I just saw a video by tony northup explaining that when using a crop sensor camera you should apply the crop factor to the apperture as well. 35mm f1.4 will actually translate to 52mm f2.2 due to difference in sensor size. i dont know if this is true for fuji lenses but it's certainly a nice thing to keep in mind.

Dick, Tony is definitely right. But most smaller full frame lenses would be a 1.8 max aperture anyway, so the 2.2 equivalent is not all that different.
+Dick Tan Actually Tony is not completely right in every area. In terms of Depth of Field that holds true. But Light intensity(T-Stop) that theory does not apply. For example T1.8 rating on Full frame lenses is the same as on the APS-C, APS-H, MFT sensors etc.
That is why T-stops are the rating of choice for Cinematographers they can swap lenses on a camera and know that the exposure is accurate following T-stops, Shutter speed and ISO are the same.
So actually converting the f-stops to sensor size is a bit "useless" I think because Depth of Field is intangible.
Can you scientifically predict how D.O.F looks at f1.4 full frame compared to f2.8 on APS-C compared to f4 on MFT from shot to shot (on the final print or screen shot)?
Yeah I would not be too concerned about converting f-stops along with Angle of View because that area of technicality does not seem important to getting good exposed pictures. If you want to know T-stop rating of your lenses look it up on Dxomark.com

Watch our review of the A7II. It is a great camera, but the lenses will be significantly more than the Fuji. Not that I'm saying that answers the question, but it certainly changes the necessary budget. We haven't tried the xpro2 yet, but really look forward to doing it in the future.
Nice job on the review! I mainly shoot MFT & Canon, but the colours & B&W images straight out of the Fujis are gorgeous. I like the idea of less time in post, so there might be a Fuji in my future, especially if they up their video game like Olympus recently has.

Thanks for this great video, I have only one question regarding new X-T10 AF modes.
In either Zone or Wide/Tracking modes, When half-pressing shutter release, sometime several autofocus points (green boxes) are highlighted in green showing they achieved focus - my question is: which one of those boxes the camera is actually locking into for the exposure ?
Sometimes there will be several boxes highlighted in a zone or wide/tracking - some will lock on objects in the front and some locked on objects in the rear - when I fully press the shutter release - which of those boxes is actually used by the camera as the focus point ?
Couldn't find explanation for this in all Fuji manuals

Fuji's wifi implementation is better than any other camera I have used. Have you ever used something you felt was better? Sony's attempt was terrible. Eye-Fi cards are annoying by having to protect an image to send it.

Great job, Josh and CP team! Actually saw you at the Photo Plus Expo (from a distance while you were in some serious talks at a vendor booth, so I didn't want to interrupt). Funny thing about the Fuji cameras - I'd visited the Sony, Olympus, and Panasonic booths all before Fuji. When I picked up the X-T1 (the X-T10's big brother) I actually completely forgot about the aperture control on the LENS and the shutter speed adjustment on one of the top dial. (shaking my head at myself). But once you remember that, they're mostly easy cameras to enjoy, at least for an entry level camera. BTW, as an eyeglasses wearer, I can confirm that although the newer Fuji cameras are known for having BIG bright EVFs, you're still going to lose some of that picture-window effect due to the eye relief simply not being long enough. The shallow eyecup is also a little problematic, and I can see some eyeglass wearers of premium frames and lenses potentially damaging them during the course of a day of photography if not careful.

+TheCameraProject I haven't gone Fuji. For personal work I have a small investment in Olympus gear (I love their glass and do a decent job working around the noise). But I'm also considering some of the Sony cameras as future possibilities. Interestingly, for I've been able to successfully put the Olympus E-M1 to work in the studio for certain applications both on the wedding day and for portraits. Each of the major players in mirrorless are definitely good ones to watch for pros and enthusiasts alike. A lot of my pro colleagues are definitely starting to take notice.
+Ulysses Ashton Yeah, I think I'm about to pick up an EM-5II myself. I really like the Olympus cameras for photo applications! Great to use with small primes or even something like the 14-150 for a great walk-around / vacation lens. I can't see why the Oly's would be great in studio. For street photography stuff, I like the little primes. You could easy carry 3 or 4 primes with you without much weight consequence. Check out my street stuff on instagram. @leftlenscapon
The sony's are also very tempting, but once you get zooms involved, it's a big camera again. I'm looking for something that I will actually take with me instead of leaving it at home. I use the sony rx100 for that purpose now, and it's great too.

That E-M5 II is a little powerhouse. With all the capabilities of the E-M1 (and then some), but with a lighter footprint and weight, it's understandably been a super popular seller for Olympus. I think you'll love it. The E-M5 II is the reason I can't wait for firmware 4.0 for my E-M1 so it can finally catch up. LOL

+DieselsArmy1 We probably won't review the XT-1 at this point because it's getting on the older side. However, the two cameras will be the same from an image quality stand point. Just different handling. XT1 is weather sealed and has a better buffer I believe.

Hi, I'm torn between Fuji x-t10 and Olympus em d e-m10 mark II. I want to get the Fuji but it seems that it is weak in terms of video shooting, autofocus, and don't have image stabilization. Olympus has good autofocus and has image stabilization but the photo quality is better in Fuji. Please help me decide. I don't know much on cameras and photography and I would really appreciate your recommendations. Thanks!
sorry i missed this question somehow. I've tested both the olympus em5ii and the fuji xt10 and went with the olympus. It would be very similar to the 10ii. If you want decent video and image stabilization, than the olympus is your camera. Though some fuji lenses may have IS, most don't. Yes, the fuji will be better in low light, and will give you somewhat easier to achieve shallow depth of field. If you are shooting landscapes or daytime, you probably won't notice a major different. Fuji does have nice jpeg processing if you won't be shooting raw and would prefer to take jpeg straight out of camera. Olympus jpegs are nice too, but don't have as many cool looking options as the fuji film simulations. The olympus system will be less expensive overall, because the lenses on m43 are generally a bit cheaper.
Overall, if you are new to photography, i'd point you toward the olympus. As I said, I own an olympus myself and really like it.
Great review! But if you were to choose right now between Sony A6000 and Fujifilm XT10, which one would you pick? Let's say we're looking for a camera that we can bring everyday and that can produce good quality images right when you take that camera out from your sling bag and take quick snapshot for the moment?

they can both fill the role you are looking for. If you are into street, I would say there are more small quality primes available for fuji than for sony. So get something like the 35 f2, which is supposed to be much quicker than the 1.4 we tested with, or the upcoming 23 f2, and just leave that on the camera and have it in your bag at all time.
You could totally do the same with the sony, but for street, and the style of the camera itself, for some reason there is something more appealing about the fuji. That said, the sony autofocus may be faster and it certainly will have better video. But with street in mind, something about the fuji calls to me more.

i have not done a head to head, and have actually had less time with the a6000 in general, though we just reviewed the a6300. By perform... do you mea focus or image quality. The Xt10 really hunts with the 35 1.4 in low light, but i think that is partially a lens issue. That said, it takes nice fairly low-noise images.
The sony will also hunt in low-light, but it probably is still faster than the fuji.
I'd say if you are leaning sony, go sony. My only suggestion would be to check out what lenses you might want in the future and make sure sony makes an E mount aps-c lens for the purposes. Most of the full frame lenses will make the a6000 bigger and bulkier than it needs to me. So for instance, there is a somewhat affordable sony 35mm 1.8 for apc, which is a nice 50mm equivalent, but if you want a 35mm equivalent, their 23 is very pricey. That said, you might be able to get a third party lens to fill the need.
As someone who knows nothing about cameras, could you film with this camera? if so what would the quality be like?
+supperandjazz We touch on video quality a bit, but no it is not a good video camera. If you just need the occasional family video it could be ok, but definitely not the camera for any kind of serious film making. I've heard the xpro-2 is the first fuji cam to have some decent video quality. -Josh

Wi-Fi has connection problems with iOS. I see this problem with my iPad air but not with my android devices. Also, try high performance mode with the focus light enabled to get better low light focusing.

i find wifi to actually be smooth as a breeze, and shooting in wifi remote added a new dimension to shooting without being noticed. nice vid though, even better if the lens used for review is the kit.
They've updated the wifi app since we did this review. We noticed on our test of the xpro 2 it had been made a lot better. As for the kit lens, we actually did have the 18-55 and did shoot with it, just didn't have it mounted to the camera for this shoot.

Hi josh i am having the nikon d90 and for portrait i use the 50mm f1.8d and for wildlife i work with nikon 70-200mm f 2.8g vr ii lens. I own the nikon d90 and both the lenses for almost 2 years now they suits my need but at a cost of bulk and weight. I am right now looking for a light in weight camera and came across mirrorless camera line up. I love both the features of olympus omd em5 mark 2 as well as the fujifilm xt10. I had been surfing the internet and came across many videos which claims that the fuji lens line up are the best in terms of sharpness and the best kit lens they provide with their cameras as fuji xt10 comes with 18-55mm f2.8-4.0. I havent used any touch screen cameras till now but it wont be a problem for me to adapt to it. I knew that both the cameras fuji xt10 and olympus em5 mark 2 has their pros and cons but since both has near about the same price range i inclined more towards fuji. So help me in out with this dilemma your suggestions will help me in getting a good camera system.
So there are so many factors to consider so I'll give you what I see as the pros and cons of both systems. I won the Olympus EM5II, but I like the fujis as well. Though if I was to buy a fuji right now I'd go with the XT-2 or XT-20 over the XT-10 as its no longer the latest. That said here is what I see in each team's camp:
Fuji: The xt-10 is a great mix of size, weight, and image quality. Its a small camera, but with the optional grip, it becomes much easier to hold as we mention in the review. There are great small primes, like the 35 f2, 23 f2, and 50f2 which maintain that great balance of size, weight, style, and image quality. I haven't shot with the f2 line of primes, but I have used the 35 1.4, and 23 1.4 and really liked them, that said, the 35 was pretty slow in terms of focusing speed, and thus my suggestion of the f2 line. Fuji's control system is a bit to get used to coming from Nikon. My previous camera was a d7000. But I do like it for the most part. It's just different. The image quality and jpegs from the fujis are fantastic, and low light is good. You can get the same image quality or better than you are used to from your Nikons. My downside with fujis which is many people's upside is that they are decidedly old-school. Meaning, they don't embrace the touch screen on a lot of their cameras, though they are getting better. Once you use a camera with one, you realize how nice it is to navigate your photos, menus, and use it to set your focus point. Panasonic and olympus cameras excel here, with Panasonic doing it best in my opinion. The other thing I wish they had was sensor based stabilization. You can handhold olympus cameras to ridiculously low shutter speeds with the sensor based stabilization. I mean shutter speeds of 1/4, 1/2, and even sometimes 1 second without a tripod. This allows for better images at lower iso's without a tripod, which more than makes up for the smaller sensor, unless you have a fast moving subject.
Olympus: A great blend of style, size, weight, modern, and old. You get the classic styling, small size, lightweight with the modern advances. Touch screen, sensor stabilization, modes like live time and live composite. I carry my Olympus around way more than I ever did with my Nikon. I feel better holding it, not because it feels better in my hand, but because I don't feel like a dorky tourist, the same goes for the fuji. There are a ton of great lenses for the micro four thirds system, pretty much every focal length is covered. Especially in your use case.
Talking lenses, the 18-55 for fuji was a really nice lens. I really appreciate a kit lens with a faster aperture like that and its still very small and light. In the US I don't think EM5ii comes bundled, but what you get depends on your priorities. I like the 14-150 for a do it all travel lens. If you want a great lens that is super light and has an amazing range, I love it. That said, it's a daytime lens, not super fast. Not a problem though, because packing extra lenses can still stay super small and light. For your portrait lens, I'd go with the Olympus 45 1.8. Nice shallow depth of field even from the smaller sensor. For your 70-200 replacement, you would go with either the Olympus 40-150 (80-300 equiv) or the panasonic 35-100. The olympus is a bit more rugged and has a longer zoom, but the panasonic is much smaller and lighter. For my night time 35mm equivalent for low light (actually it's on my camera almost all of the time), I have the olympus 17 1.8 which is fantastic as well. And if you want a fast zoom, the Olympus 12-40 is great. It is a bit big and heavy for the camera, but built like a tank, and compared to my d7000 with a kit lens, it's still light!

I'm sure you'll be happy with either of them. Not sure your timeline but I've heard rumors of an em10iii coming soon, which although it would be lower in the lineup would be 2 years newer tech than the em5ii, so it could be worth looking into those rumors and seeing what your timeline to buy is.

Be more specific. By that, I mean what kind of cheap lenses are you hoping for? 3rd party lenses that are made for the camera? Cheap fuji lenses themselves? 3rd party old lenses that will be adapted and all manual?
They are very different cameras with very different controls and form factors. Fuji is all about physical knobs and dials. Meaning there is a dedicated shutter speed dial on the camera, dedicated exposure compensation, most of their lenses have aperture rings on lens. Fuji has a distinctly retro look.
Sony's line is much more modern minimalistic. Not necessarily good or bad, just depends on which controls you like. PASM dial on sony for program auto shutter and manual. Different controls on fuji that can essentially do the same things.
I would say fuji cares more about their APS-C lens line than sony does as sony has been making full frame lenses the past couple of years. Sony has some nice tiny small zooms, but fuji's zooms are probably better quality than those tiny sony ones. There are bigger sony ones with better quality too.
Its a tough call. If I wanted a good all around camera to recommend to a new shooter, I'd probably suggest the a6000. If I was buying a camera for myself, I might go fuji and pair it with a nice small prime like the 35 f2 as a great street photography camera. All and all, there are a lot of variables.

tough call. lots of variables. The main variable will be which body style you like and which lens system you want to be in. Em10ii will have same image quality as em5ii. G7 should be fairly on par with both of those. G7 is more of a dslr style body. Em10ii has more of a retro style and is smaller, but lacks the grip of a g7. XT10 is similar style body to em10ii, though probably a hair larger.
I think of the group, I'd buy the olympus, but I own olympus so I'm biased. The panasonic will have the best video and best menu and touch screen interface in my opinion. The Xt10 will have best low-light and best shallow depth of field. The lenses will be slightly larger for the fuji than for panasonic or olympus. Video will be BY FAR the worst on the fuji. Also you have to price out what type of lenses you will buy and how much that will cost.
If you did a 3 zoom kit, how much would that cost for each camera. So a wide angle, a standard lens, and a telephoto. Of course, you could also do an all in one, like the 14-150 to cover that range, though it's not super wide. So may factors to consider!
+TheCameraProject i made my decision to buy olympus em10 mark ii over a6000because of its build quality the retro look and also slow motion 4k video and more. But what i dont get is it has two different view finder, one is slr and one electronic. Which one is better? And will it do any difference to the video and image quality? Also i dont know which kit lense to get. The RII 14-42mm kit lense or The 14-42 EZ lens? Ist worth buying the EZ for additional 150-200$? I hope my decision is right on buying this camera soon.

it's a great explanation, however, it would be more exciting if you both could just like discuss, you know, you throw an opinion and she will disagree or agree plus give explanation as to why, and vice versa.
furthermore, you might want to consider giving high and low tones while speaking, to keep your audiences enthusiastic
i am a big fan of naturalistic, btw. this is not really a suggestion, but you may want to see Before Trilogy and apply the naturalistic talks while walking.
no offense, a good video, but standing stills while talking to camera (and whoever not talking is making weird standing still gesture) is too weird and some might find it boring.

The whole point of this line of Fujifilm cameras are the manual controls? To say they make it hard to shoot with to me just seems lazy. The manual controls are the bomb! Further if you want more features move up to the xt2 or xpro2. This little xt10 is entry level, so complaining about a lack of this and a lack of that just seems unwarranted for what the camera is.
It depends on who you are as a shooter. If you are someone who just saw a review saying the best entry level mirrorless camera is a fuji xt-10, and based on that you want to buy it, you may want to know what it will and won't have compared to say a panasonic, olympus, or sony competitor. There are absolutely those who will love this style of control, and others who just read a headline on the verge saying its the best mirrorless camera, and they might be looking for some more info on that camera. All we are trying to get at is that there are features other cameras have, that are appealing to some people that this camera does not. That doesn't make it bad, and for a certain photographer it makes it exactly what they are looking for!
They are shooting with a contrast detect AF camera at night in pitch black and complaining about the AF. Oh boy. Do we really need yet another camera fetish YT channel?
It wasn't a comment about just that one moment of shooting, we had been testing for a couple of weeks. Also, even in our test shots like at the florist, there is a lot of lighting under that awning. So no, not pitch black. As for contrast based AF, compare it to panasonic or olympus contrast AF and you will find those faster in low-light with their equivalent lenses.
TheCameraProject I have an Olympus OMD EM-10 II, it also struggles in poor light and IQ happens to suck compared to the Fuji cameras. I tested the XT-10 at B&H and used to own an X-Pro1 and they are lovely cameras.
You are right! They are lovely cameras! We talk about the great image quality, the better shallow DOF, and better low light image quality in this review. Fuji low light image quality is at least a stop better than m43, if not 2! As for low-light focusing, they both have their struggles. That said, if you take the 35 1.4, which we were testing with here, and compare it to the olympus 25 1.8 (and I'm sure the new 25 1.2 would be way better, but we haven't tested), in our experience the m43 low-light focusing was faster. That said, we have since heard that the 35 1.4 we were testing with is notoriously a slow lens, so this could be more lens specific than camera specific. I've heard great things about the new 35 f2.

biased against fuji in my eyes, who wants to do a review in darkness. the young lady looked annoyed, like she had had an argument with her partner before the shoot. A review in good light ear marking some of the superb fuji lenses might have been more apt. The quality of the j pegs with the better fuji lenses has to be seen to be believed, honest.
Dave Chilvers Radio blog to be said we had the camera for a couple weeks. We shot the review in the dark but reviewed the camera both ways

very nice review of the cemara,
but one tip for people that are looking for a camera: the speed of the photo's per second only maters if you are going for sport photo's or car races, its not a bad thing if a cemara can onley make 3 photo's per secon instead of 6 because who is gonne give a crap if you shoot your family pictures or even model pictures :D witch you do far more often than make photo's of some fast things.

yeah your right ofcours, sometimes i make sport pictures for our volleyball club, and i can also make great pictures if i just time right. so it will not alway´s depend on the speed of your camera but also your own reaction. ofcours its nice if your camera is fast because its eazyer.

the girl is super hot but she lives in a digital world. the camera is mainly for manual shooters of course . for people who wants to shoot creative like me. i love manual shooting. i want to be precise . she should do more review on just point and shoot and she will be perfect for it. definitely fujifilm is for advance users. and yes video does suck. but with a little help with premiere or hit film. it will do well. but my point is. that girl is hot. =)
