The main mistake is that you even start. Once you begin buying the statues it’s hard to stop. $$$$$$$$ Lol!

But that is indeed the down fall of many a collector.
This is why we got into Pops...Little did we know they’re nothing more than a gateway drug to statues. :D

Biggest thing for me was collecting what I want to collect and not getting caught up in trying to keep up with what others get.
Had 40 1:4 scale and sold them all to begin collecting smaller Bowen/Koto because what I liked personally was large displays with lots of characters and I couldnt be happier. Collect for yourself and your own enjoyment.
Those hulks looked amazing. You had all the colours. Then you shafted hulk. Hulk will be back for his revenge.

I can agree with that, I never do pay plans or anything like that. If I can’t pay it in full right away or pay off my CC in like 2 payments I won’t pick it up.
Very true about keeping boxes. Your taste changes over the years. You think you are keeping statues forever, but changes happen. I used to collect comics long ago. I sold them all. Then I moved to Mego 70s action figures. Then I sold them. Next was Superman only items. Well, that’s gone too. Now I’m strictly an Alien and Predator collector. Let’s see how long that lasts, lol.

I am glad I got into the hobby early. I think it is close to 20 years ago. I think coming in now I would be overwhelmed and so sad with the high prices. I miss when 1/4 statues were under $250. The best advice, buy statues of characters you love and know you will have long-term.

Typical Toy Reviews they are talking live. You can tell when they’re speaking at the same time Gem’s voice briefly becomes the rough Skype call sounding audio probably recorded on Tom’s end before the levels are shifted back to the audio he is recording himself. I think the reason it sounds like they aren’t doing it live is because they are taking turns giving each other plenty of time to speak and avoiding speaking at the same time (to avoid this very issue)

I like collecting stuff but all I really want is One Statue, and that's the Wolverine Premium Format Figure by Sideshow, the Classic Yellow Suit with the Sentinel Hand as the Base.
I like that statue, but the pose is more horizontal, not really standing. I prefer the Sabretooth statue and pose.

The lesson I learned was once I knew which characters I wanted to have (love and connection), I made an Excel sheet or list. I bookmarked website shops and links to statues that I really wanted. The sculpt, the paint application, the base. And of course, the price. I figured out what scale I prefered. For me, I learned that I prefer 1:4 and larger scales, even though I've collected mostly 1:6 scale in the beginning. Later on, I regretted the 1:6 scale statues and ended up selling most of them. eBay and PayPal fees are no joke!

Great video! I've been looking at those 1/6 scale DC XM statues - Love the Superman and Green Lantern ones...I was damn close to getting that Brown Wolverine when I got my bonus this year but it was sold out.
Always nervous about a pick up this big, especially with the exchange but the itch is creepin'

These are great tips. I've yet to buy a statue just because it's a big boy hobby and dont often find myself with hundreds or thousands of dollars to play with.

I bought the life size bust of artoroius the abyss walker from dark souls back in December and it’s supposed to arrive end of July, can’t wait it’s my second statue and I’m so hyped because I’ve never had one this big before

I just bought my first statue from Sideshow, I had plans to get my 3 favorite characters but after receiving it I'm having some serious 2nd thoughts. It takes so much space it's really hard to display it correctly. I measured and everything beforehand but still 31" tall is enormous, but I wanted the detail, because I often use it for reference when drawing. I'm thinking of making my own base and boxing the original back up. I would be really interested in a video like this about turntables, and display cases!
Welcome to the family. I do nothing but build my own cabinets and bases. It’s INFINITELY more satisfying to put these statues into something you’ve crafted. It also lets you dictate the space and where they go instead of the cabinet or shelf limiting your choices. Get some 3/4” sanded plywood, cut them to size, use a router to cut 1/8 inch gloves for the plexiglass (use a plexiglass cutter or have Home Depot cut it to size for you), get some led strips or jewelry case led spotlights and your in business. Create some “face frames” (plenty of videos on using a pocket hole jig $80.00 from harbor freight) out of maple strips and you’ve built yourself something people pay hundreds of dollars for.
Keep your box tom, you know how much cats love boxes.

Not only keep your boxes, but take detailed pictures about what goes where. I buy anime statues, mostly unlicensed and they don't come with instructions on how to assemble. This might be different for licensed comic book statues though.

lol I ttll have all of them and they are taking up alot of space. Now I only buy statues that I really like the problem is I missed some because the picture looked terrible but on video review they look good but tis too late by then
I'm guilty of buying too many at once when I got into the statue world. Though all the ones I got are of characters that I like or groups that I like, like X-men, but yeah I went crazy, for my budget anyways, at the start. That's probably all that I could say I'm guilty of. I don't get any customs, I only bought one off eBay and it was my one must have that was no longer available for purchase and I keep all my boxes, though some shippers got destroyed where I was keeping them so I'm out a few shippers. Other than that, I've definitely slowed down on the preorder/ordering of statues, but I do love this hobby. Oh and yes, I am at the stage of being out of space for what I have. But hey, I'll find a way :)

Insurance. If your collection grows and exceeds a few thousand dollars then it's important to know: 1. that your homeowner's/renter's insurance typically has low limits for art/collectibles, and 2. you'll need to provide records to support your loss. I recommend annually photographing your collection by taking a video or photographs.

Just picked up a couple of gentle giant statues, but I think I’ll just stick to funkos and action figures. The new McFarlane toys for DC are pretty dope!
I have 2 1/4 scale high end statues and love them. So hard to not buy more! Right now I’m looking at XM Iron Man or IS Punisher for my next piece.

video collectables are weird because most gamers go for console/controller/accesories collection, the consoles, motherboard, arcades, are almost the 'statues' of the video game community. A hardcover is like buying a disc game, the figures is like buying a street fighter controller and the statue is like buying the spiderman playstation 4, or the metal gear solid psp or an arcade, that shits expensive oftenly more than double the price of the regular version.
Great topic and video. There’s always going to be better statues for as long as you live, so no harm in just being appreciative and content with what you already got. At least until the uncontrollable thirst returns....

Keep your box is a huge one. Even things you love you may eventually just not have a place for and thus you might be more willing to part with them + just moving or storage situations in between.

When it comes to statues , action figures, or model kits : I Save Everything !!! For storage alone, it just makes sense to have the original box it came in. Nothing else is specifically designed for the protection of that piece. I also am a big fan of the art that's displayed on most statue boxes, like Sideshow. Especially the Court of the Dead !

Great informative video Gem Mint & Tom! 👍🏽 I just recently started collecting 1/4 scale pieces (upgraded from 1/6 scale Bowen & Kotobukiya). Now I’m still keeping the 1/6 scale pieces I own, but have limited space for my 1/4 scale pieces. Nice advice to just buy the characters you like as opposed to trying to buy other characters for the sake of completing a set. With that in mind, you think I should get the SS PF Thor breaker of brimstone or SS PF Amazing Spider-Man? I like both characters, but can’t decide! 😬
I am a starting collector but i am VERY picky about my statues. As a huge Batman fan i am looking for that perfect Batman statue to complete my house. However i would also like a archer section. The lack of money and space makes it very difficult for me to buy any statue at all.

On your comment about video game related statues depreciating in value, I would say that it all depends what genre it is related to. In your example of more mainstream titles, such as Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, then this may be the case. However, quite a few related to more niche video game titles tend to hold their value more so; mostly based on Japanese role-playing type games. Some examples that come to mind from my own collection are figures based on the Touhou and Hyperdimension Neptunia series of games. Of course, for those not willing to pay lots of money for first-run and/or official releases, many Chinese knock-offs exist that one can buy for a fraction of the cost, however you'll get what you pay for in the end.

Love that rorschach statue Tom has. Rorschach is easily my favourite character. Interesting video as I'm thinking of getting into this game a little more.
I bought one broken statue from my comicshop so they sold it to me for $50. It was night owls ship from Watchmen only thing that was broken was the stand that the ship assembles on to. Easy fix with some super glue and a lot of patience and bam. Now looks great can't see where damage was and because stand is made to look like underground railroad, glue looks like water so worked out great. Current statues I have payment plans on are prime 1 studio Zero Year Batman and Midieval Batman vs Joker Dragon. Don't know where to out but really love and have invested a lot of time reading those comic lines and appreciating them.
In my experience. I started with buying the displaycase fit for two statues only. With doors so my evil cat cańt touch them. I know that kind of frames the statue, but it still does its thing. And I am never gonna put out. Íll never preorder ever again, cause when the payment was due, I wasńt ready at that particular moment, and had to dig into the savings...not a proud moment will I add!
But now I´ve had these statues for almost two years now and ím still happy with them, and I think that the less statues the better. Unless you have like one statue per case. Cause it can seem kind of cluttered.
