How is the Lcms that came out of the reformation the church that christ established through the apostles?

Patrick Leyerle I’m not a Pastor or a theological expert, but to me the Reformation is the Restoration of the Church. To restore is to “bring back what was initially instituted”. Luther’s works and writings had to do with restoring the Church to what was created and instituted by the Apostles. Through the sins of man, the Church was corrupted and he and others, restored or reformed the Church to what it was meant to be, according to the Prophets and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Anyway, just my opinion. God”s peace.

Hi pastor Bryan. I stumbled upon your UA-cam channel recently and I enjoy listening to what you talk about; even tho I am a Catholic Christian, we have some common ground. :)
I'm no Theologian like you or at all but I like learning about my faith and others.
What are your thoughts on the Joint Declaration of Faith that was signed by the Catholic Church and the Lutheran Church?
Could you make a video about this?
On another video that you made, you were giving why you are a Lutheran; that's cool because it's your journey of faith and I've made a video about my conversion to the Catholic Church. In your video, you made it look like the Catholic Church uses philosophy and other things to present or articulate the Gospel, in which fashion it came off to me as the Catholic Church uses unnecessary means to get the message of salvation out to the masses or that the Catholic Church is wrong. This was my feeling that I got from that particular video. Of course I was thinking that as a Catholic I would still be Catholic whether the Church decided to use Aristotle or Plato's language to convey a Truth about Jesus.
The Church isn't founded on those philosophies, but it's also not going to reject those philosophies outright just because it's not found in the Bible. It's not a deal breaker for me personally or the greater Catholic community.
Transubstantiation was part of this video you made and honestly, I believe it in faith because my little brain cannot comprehend this truth. It's not a big deal to me if the Orthodox keep themselves from articulating this Mystery nor about the Lutheran church for using Consubstantiation.
And regarding where to find the Church Christ founded- I'm very glad that I wasn't the only one in human history asking this question. 😊
Fortunately the Early Church Fathers gave us and all those that seek out the Church Christ founded an answer; that we would know which is the Church by this particular name, 'Catholic Church' which I believe Saint Athanasius of Alexandria stated, but I'll have to look it up.
I only drag in the Orthodox Communion because if anything, if I weren't a Catholic Christian, I would be an Orthodox Christian because in the words of Cardinal John Henry Newman, "To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant".
    God's peace.

@@tonigraf3096 "No one can have God for his father, who has not the Church for his mother" (Saint Cyprian, II century). The Church, by virtue of the Holy Spirit given by Jesus to the apostles and to their successors, decided the "Canon" of the Scriptures. You can consider the books of the Bible as "trustable" only on the basis of the authority Jesus himself gave to his apostles and the apostles to their legitimate successors, the bishops. If you lose trust in the Church, inspired and guided by the Holy Spirit, you also lose the basis to consider the Holy Scripture as an authority. It is true that the Holy Church is composed by sinners, but it is also true what Jesus promised to Peter: "the gates of the hell shall not prevail against it" (Mt 16,19).

    • @tonigraf3096

@@thomastr914 Oh. I made the mistake of thinking you were sincerely asking a question instead of offering debate. You have made up your mind and so have I so any further dialog is probably pointless. I do respect our early leaders. I am aware of how the Canon came to be and I do trust that the gates of hell will not prevail against the rock, Christ in us, the Holy Spirit giving faith. You see Peter (who later denied Christ 3 times) as the Rock - I see the God given faith evidenced by the response he gave Jesus. Praise God our faith depends on His grace! God is our Rock as is stated many times in the Bible. Deu 32:4, 15, 18, 30, 31; 1 Sam 2:2, 2 Sam 22:32, 47, 23:3; Ps 18:31, 46, 19:14, 28:1, 42:9...and so many more. The church is not my mother, but rather my brothers and sisters in Christ joined by the same Holy Spirit, His temple joined together. Matt 12:48, Mark 3:33, Luke 8:21, 1 Cor 3:16 & Eph 2:19-22. Jesus is our Chief Cornerstone (a Rock) built on the foundations of the apostles and prophets. What did the apostles and prophets have? God's Holy Spirit - Faith! May Peace be with you.

    • @thomastr914
      @thomastr914 4 роки тому

@@tonigraf3096 Thank you Tony for your kind response. Oh no, I didn't make up my mind. I always look for the Truth and, we know, the Truth is Christ himself. As we cannot possess Christ, we cannot possess the Truth. The debate is something really good because if it means looking together for the Truth. Without dialogue, we cannot look for the Truth. Dialogue is not easy because first of all, we have to break down prejudices, hear what the other says, being humble, and a lot of other things... My point wasn’t about the Primate of the Bishop of Rome (for talking about it we should agree before about what a bishop is and so about Apostolic Succession). My point was about a common ground, the Gospels, because we generally agree that they are trustworthy to transmit what Jesus said and did. My question is: how can we consider the Canon of the Scriptures trustworthy, without considering as good the 3 criteria that the Bishops of the early Church applied to define which texts were to be considered as Canonical: Orthodoxy of Doctrine, Apostolicity, and ancient liturgical use. The Doctrine transmitted by Tradition and guarded by the Bishop (successors of the apostles in an unbroken line) defined which texts were to be considered trustworthy. So Sacred Tradition for the Ancient Church was the rule to define what communicates the Revelation and what doesn’t. In my point of view if we deny those principles we have no more basis to consider the Bible as trustworthy. The brothers in Christ are the Church, but if they are not united hierarchically in One Body they do not reflect the One Body of Christ (Rm 12,4-5), the temple of the Holy Spirit. You were speaking about Faith, but how can you define what true faith is and what isn’t? You were also speaking about the Holy Spirit, but how can you distinguish about what is coming from the Holy Spirit and what is not? Is the Holy Spirit something that “magically” comes when you have an inspiration or it passes through a Body, the Mystical Body that is the Church? If Christ is the Rock, where is his true body? And how can you consider to be coming from the Holy Spirit all the different interpretations of the Scriptures and doctrines that different denominations of Christians are teaching? Where are Orthodoxy, Apostolicity, and continuity of Liturgy? These are subjects on which Catholics and Orthodoxes agree but Protestants don’t. I would appreciate receiving your point of view on these subjects. God bless you. (And sorry for my English, I'm Italian).

Good afternoon three years later, Thomas TR9! You asked a great question and got my attention! Before I can provide to you a useful response, I feel it's necessary to ensure we are both starting out from the same place. So please help me by answering a couple quick questions. Once you answer, I will provide you my own answers in kind and we will both know whether or not we share common beliefs that we can begin our discussion without needlessly addressing issues that are non-issues.
      1. Could you give me your thoughts/views about the Bible; what do you believe the Bible to be?
      2. In your question, you mention "successors of the Apostles". Do you have any specific successors of the Apostles in mind? If so, could you provide a few examples that you might have been thinking of when you asked the question?
Thanks so much! And may Christ's peace be with you!

We need to be transformed into more maturity. Anyone thinking he is completely whole or the way God intends us to be is fooling themselves. Why does God not just take us to heaven as soon as we get saved? " Anyways, what do we look forward to while we wait? .....that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send Jesus, the Christ, who has been appointed for you. Heaven must take Him in until the time comes for the restoration of all things, which God announced long ago through His holy prophets. For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to Him in everything He tells you." We must listen, apply, and help each other along this journey, until...the restoration of 20% of ALL things? no Acts 3:21 passage says the "restoration of ALL things." And Ephesians 1:9-11 also bears this out: "And He has made known to us the mystery of His will according to His good pleasure, which He purposed in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to bring all things in heaven and on earth together in Christ. In Him we were also chosen as God’s own, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything by the counsel of His will." We wait patiently, in hope, that someday God will be "ALL in ALL!" And God has placed us in a body, with all of us tied together in some way. A hand can't be 20 feet away from our body and do us any good.

So you condemn babies who haven't had the chance to mature? Maybe I misunderstand what you mean by "completely whole"? Yes, I agree we should mature as Christians in our understanding though wholeness/newness/holiness come from Christ alone. If we were all taken to Heaven as soon as we believe, who would be left to go and tell and disciple? The Bible is sufficient but God has commanded us to go share the gospel, baptize in the Name of the Father, Son & Holy Spirit and make disciples.

All Catholics should read the book of Romans. They might be surprised to learn they are in conflict with most all of the New Testament and most certainly Christ Jesus’ words to ALL who believe in Him. The Roman’s took the apostles gospel and turned it into a typical Roman move… they elevated Rome over Jesus. They worship idols - Mary and Saints. Mary was a human woman, we the body of the church are all Saints. They literally pray (and have to actually pay to do this) their dead out of a bogus made up place called purgatory.
The pope has broken most all of what the apostles said not to do, men and women of the church can’t marry, that’s unbiblical. The apostles warned that if any one comes alongs teaching by adding to or changing our words than you should turn away from him because he is not of us nor our Messiah. Soooo many things. I have catholic family and friends and I’m so scared for their soul.

Just a comment to address the angry Catholics telling you you don’t have the Lords Supper if your not Catholic. Ummmm 300 yrs went by before Rome got on board and legalized Christianity and misunderstood what Jesus said to Peter in Matt16:18 “You are petros, and on this petra I will build ‘My’ church. Later after Peter confesses that Jesus IS The Christ. The word for Peter is petros but the word for rock is Petra.
By peters confession that Jesus is the Son of God he will build the foundation of the church by confession and that Jesus is the cornerstone the foundation of the church itself not Peter.
The things you read to us out of the Catholics catechism or rules, for the Eucharist were appalling to me as first just a Christian and secondly, a Lutheran. They were blasphemous. I’ll end with Galatians 1:19 as we have said before, so now, I say again; if anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. The Catholic Church has added their own agenda to the Bible plenty.
Proverbs 30:6 Do not add to his words, or he will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar.
There is a good reason Luther denounced the false teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, because he could read the Bible for himself and understood salvation by justification. The evangelical church would not exist today. Had it not been for the courage and Holy Spirit speaking to Martin Luther of Gods truths.

What logic is there in turning to a man to tell us the signs of the true church? Where in the Bible does it say that any single human person/ sinner like Luther or anyone else has the authority to tell us what are the signs of a true Church? If you believe the Bible is an reliable document, then look at the Gospels and see what Jesus is recorded as saying about His Church. He said he would found a Church and the gates of Hell would never prevail against it( Mathew 16). Therefore, the very Church he founded is still here on Earth according to His promise and it impossible that Church has ever ceased to be since that would make Jesus a liar. Consequently, the first and most fundamental mark of His Church must be that the True Church founded by Christ can be traced back to Christ.
In sum, the fundamental sign of a true Church is that it can be traced back to Christ Himself and that is apparent if you accept just two simple things. #1 The Gospel accounts are reliable documents and #2 Jesus Keeps His promises. Specifically, Christ kept his promise to be with His Church always.
If you are in a Church that claims to be a true Church and it can't be traced back to the days of Christ, then you are not in a true Church. Many cults have done just that haven't they? Remember Jim Jones and David K and his cult in Waco Texas? Extreme examples of false Churches? Yes, but I choose them because we all can agree they are false despite their claim to follow the Bible. Anyone can do that. In fact, there are hundreds and hundreds of Churches that do just that. Only a few Churches can trace themselves back to Christ Himself and those few are they only Candidates which meet the Biblical criteria I mentioned above as having been established in Mathew 16, i.e. that is being a Church which has existed without interuption since being founded by Christ Himself. Such Churches include the ancient Churches of the East such as the Coptic Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, Assyrian, Armenia Apostolic, Catholic Church, and some others. I would start there and not in the many Churches in the Western World which are founded by men centuries after the crucifixtion and who claim they base their religion on the Bible while contradicting each other and dividing themselves into hundred and hundreds of denominations and sub divided denominations (how many dozen Lutheran Churches are there in the US alone?, never mind the 30-40 Presbyterians denominations, Congregationalist Denominations, 30-40 Southern Baptists and the Baptists in the North that they separated from,, the Reformed Baptists begun in England, the non-Denominationalists each a new denomination of its own, 7th Day Adventists, and so on. All founded by a man/woman with his personal Biblical interpretation and ability to gather a flock of followers, etc. Look for the one True Church founded by Jesus Christ and you'll find the Words of Eternal Life.

Although I mean no offense, you sound like another misguided Roman Catholic who does not understand the difference between "catholic" and "Roman Catholic." You also undoubtedly wrongly believe Matthew 16:16-18 refer to Peter as to upon whom Christ will build His church. I am sorry, but the grammar will not allow that interpretation. Confessional Lutherans ARE catholic, although not Roman Catholic. Sola Gratia - Sola Fide - Sola Scriptura - Solus Christus.

First, I agree with Rick that you are Roman Catholic. But, I would suggest that if you accept the Orthodox church, that split in 1054, as one of the 'true churches" then you should also accept the Lutheran church, which split with Rome 500 years later. Furthermore, the Roman Catholic church in 1517 was highly corrupt and certainly not following Scripture (one could argue they still aren't) and Luther intend to reform the Roman Church not split from it (hence the name reformer). In his sola scriptura segment of the 5 solas he focuses on Scripture in its entirety and that traditions and canon law don't override the Bible. So I would propose that Luther was correct and the pope was not. Even today the service is very "Catholic" especially for those who came out of the more radical reformer Evangelical type churches. Confessional Lutherans are part of the holy catholic (universal) church as confessed in the Apostles Creed.

All this sounds good but isn't there something your overlooking? The Scriptures are about families, not about churches as we know it today or religions. Jesus warned us in Matt 7:21-23 - "Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’
23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!’,"
He said -"MANY" not a few, "Did we not", means more than one in a group. So to many today in groups of more than one, Jesus will say I never Knew you. Truth is, there is no true Church or true religion but there are true individual s and families having love among themselves, remaining in his word, scattered throughout the world. All religions are manufactured by men and we should never put our trust in men. Ps 146:3-4 warns us : Put not your trust in princes,
in mortal man, who cannot save. 4 When his spirit departs, he returns to the ground;on that very day his plans perish. Religions tell you to give up your Christian freedom to do and believe what they tell you is in scripture, thus the sheep become misled. That is not the way of Christ, he said come to me, and i will refresh you. Religions, as did the pharisees in Jesus day enslaves his sheep and loads his sheep down with heavy burdens. That is why Jesus said at John 8:31 - “If you remain in my word, you are really my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free". We need only the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit to guide us.

Cody Helscel: You ask a great question. Pastor Wolfmueller never quotes Luther because he's Luther. He quotes him only when he faithfully teaches the Word of God. Luther was to theology what men like Mozart, Bach, and Handel were to music. He was a giant. Does that mean everything he wrote the church should subscribe to? Certainly not. In fact, most of The Lutheran Confessions were not written by Luther. How are we to receive what Luther wrote? Like that of St. Augustine. Augustine wrote that he had written so much in his life that if you were to run across something that was not faithful to Scripture you should tear it up. Exactly. And yet Christians would be arrogant not to sit at the feet of men whom the Holy Spirit used to do so much for the spread of the Gospel. As a Lutheran pastor I, too, quote extensively from Luther in my sermons, papers and Bible studies. I do so, however, always when it faithfully expounds upon God's Word. When you read the works of men such as Luther or other faithful confessors after and before Luther (i.e., Chemnitz, Gerhard, Hilary of Poitiers, Augustine, etc.), you cannot help but be blown away by the depth of their writing in contradistinction to the theological dribble common today, not to mention outright heresy. Luther's brilliance (as a work of the Holy Spirit) in speaking theology in a way approachable by all is no where made more clear than in his Small Catechism. If you have never read it, you must do so. Both here and in his Large Catechism you will discover the truths of the Christian faith in such clarity unmatched. Pax.

Yea, why even bother with folks who lived 2000 years ago? I mean why listen to Paul, Peter, Jesus... Strange way to think Rick. Is something more right just because it's said in resent years? Haven't you understand that nothing new is said or thought? The things you feel, think and said has been said for decades. What new thoughts can you show for the human race? Nothing. Shape up and get in the game, just because you have a computer doesn't mean youre a new lifeform of human. Every good thing has already been said, the trick is to find it. That's why we still listen to Luther, Augustinus, Paul, Ezekiel and all the wise men of old.

@@CodyHelscel : Another great question. Luther refused to allow his name to be used because as he rightly believed and taught, it is CHRIST'S church. However, he finally relented and allowed his name to be used because Rome was lumping the Lutheran confessors in the same camp as those who started the "radical" reformation. They went around burning statues of Mary, Joseph, etc., crucifixes, and even some priests. They tried to tear down church structures. Worst of all they denied basic, fundamental Christian (i.e., "catholic") doctrines (i.e., baptism, the real presence in the Lord's Supper, the divine office of pastor, etc.) because Rome taught them. The "Lutherans" along with Martin Luther himself wanted nothing to do with that. They were what The Lutheran Confessions refer to as "enthusiasts". They were all emotion, no solid biblical foundation. Once the articles now contained in The Lutheran Confessions were examined and accepted as faithful in all doctrine to the Word of God and became their public confession, the word "Lutheran" refers to those documents. I, along with many others around the world, call myself "Lutheran" because I subscribe without condition all that is taught in The Lutheran Confessions as faithful to the Word of God. To be "Lutheran" in that context is the same as saying we are Christian. Those confessions (finalized and presented in 1580) have never changed nor added to. What other confession claiming to represent the Christian faith can say the same? Rome has been inventing new dogma before the turn of the first millennium. The heart of all of The Lutheran Confessions is CHRIST. Hope this helps. Pax.

Lutheran's also used Latin extensively in the past. So using it to end your argument and give it some legitimacy is laughable.

by holy father do you mean God or the Pope? The Great Schism of 1054 didn't split the church but the reformation of 1517 did? Luther begged and reasoned and pleaded for reform and to open the gospel to the people. He refused. Catholics place more faith in a pope and priest than Christ himself.
An alter USED to be a place of sacrifice in the Old Testament. Jesus fulfilled that sacrifice once for all (see Scripture) so why do Catholics teach that Jesus must again and again be sacrificed at every mass? I guess His death on the cross wasn't enough? A valid priesthood? This isn't Levitcal priesthood anymore! It's not genetic and there is no sacrifice needed daily. You claiming Peter founded the Catholic church and it is only valid church rejects all the churches Paul and James and Thomas and all the other disciples founded. catholic in the apostles creed is universal not roman catholic. Stop putting so much faith in traditions and read your Bible please. This is what Luther, a Catholic monk and professor, was proclaiming. Then kneel at the cross and repent.

The true Church was not build by man but by Jesus Christ during His life on earth. He said the gates of hell would not prevail against it; and of course it hasn't because if the Master builder - God Himself - can't build a church that will endure then surely no mere man can. It just takes some common sense and logic to see that the Catholic Church is the true Church.

Those Christians in the early church who were orthodox were part of the church catholic (i.e., meaning "of the whole", "universal", etc.). As confessional Lutheran, Pastor Wolfmueller and all who adhere to The Lutheran Confessions ARE catholic. That was the whole point the confessors made before the Emperor Charles V, that all they wanted was to confess Christ as the church catholic has from the beginning. It was Rome that deviated from catholic doctrine by inventing all manner of man-made rules. Rome, in its official doctrines, is not catholic. Sorry, no offense meant. Simply speaking the truth. Pax.

Luther’s reasoning is that adding that word in his translation was consistent with good German grammar if one wants to properly translate what the Greek says in that verse.
Adding the “alone” to his translation is consistent to what the verse is saying, and Luther was not the first to do so. Eight others had translated the verse with “alone” well before Luther. Such men were:
