This video is very helpful. I am on the hunt for the perfect charm pack. I have never done quilting before. My goal this year is to learn to quilt and I think the charm packs will be perfect! Thank you for showing such detail and explaining the seam allowance! :-)
Sure! It's the Hello Luscious fabric collection by Basic Grey! Thanks for stopping by!
Thank You so much Melanie for this tutorial I Loved it! You gave me some inspiration to start doing it!!😘😘😘
Loved your tutorial. I found it very easy to follow and now I want to give it a go! thank you x
Hi Karol! If you are a beginner and still deciding how much sewing you will be doing I suggest a very basic machine from a sewing and vac store or target/walmart type department stores have basic Singer and Brother machines that are very inexpensive to get started. Craigslist is also a great place for good deals. Make sure it comes with the manual so you can troubleshoot. Look for brands like Viking, Janome, Bernina... all great machines! I would stay away from computerized to get started.
yes! the next video will be basting, then I'll do some quilting and binding as well!! Thanks for watching!
wow you make it look so simple. I'm excited to start my first one for my 6 year old next month.
thanks for this video. I'm making a small patchwork to use for a reversible bag for the lining and/or outside. I needed to know how to get the corners to match up perfectly, you explained it so well, bty, I am cutting out all of my many many squares.
Love your tutorials! Thank you!
Thank you! All of those blocks are from the Craftsy block of the month. It's a free class! So all the patterns are on there. As for the fabric... they are all from my stash and various collections and designers. Here are a few links with some better photos and more information. I can't add links here, so I added some under the video description where my blog is too some posts with closer pictures. Feel free to leave comments if you want to know what a specific fabric is!
The video shows the idea of chain piecing which is to sew consecutive squares without having to cut the threads in between. I showed you the first bit, but then you can continue sewing in the same manner until you have completed rows... and that is where I pick up at the ironing board. Hope that helps!
oh awesome! Glad it worked for you!
I miss quilting! I need to get back into it!
Very helpful, thanks!
This was really fun to watch I always loved my nans patch work when I was little. She made me the loveliest blanket. ♡
Hi Melanie ,just listened to your story today ,know it is a year ago ,but just wanted to let you know I am sending love to you .Hope feeling better now
Thank you for your crochet videos ,just love them ,makes it so easy for a novice
Keep well and safe .x
I love your vídeos
I never pre-wash and have never had a problem, but I use only high quality quilting cottons. If you are nervous about bleeding for precuts just make sure you buy high quality ones and if you are using cheaper fabric buy yardage and pre-wash just to be safe! Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
Wait....how did you get the chain pieces to a solid row?
Loveb ur videos I'm waiting on my new sewing machine.
Great demonstration
I was very scaried of even think about making a quilt until I watched your videos. Thank you so much, you explained everything so precise and clear. I can wait to make my first quilt.
thanks! i made a perfectly. so much fun. oxo
Wonderful it is really goodwork
♥✿ My favorite Demo for chain piecing. THANKS! ♥✿
When you buy charmpacks or any pre cut bundles do you wash, dry and iron them first? Ive been told you always have to wash and dry any fabric before sewing but it seems such small pieces would just fall apart.
Easy and simple instructions
Melanie would you be able to do a video on how to finish off the quit with the backing and edging?
Very interesting I'm going learn how to do this.
Good job
Oh my, 3 out of 4! Ok, when you are done with the top, are you using a batting and backing and then quilting it all together? You have to make sure and quilt according to the batting instructions. And then you are binding it? Are the seams coming apart?
Great!
Can you show us how you finish off the quilt as well? Do you sew it by hand or machine quilt the 3 peices together? (back, front + stuffing)
How did you get from the chain piece to the rows???? D:
Hi! Can you please show me how to go from the chain to them all together? I'm confused by that part! You seem to explain it in the comments but would love to see it done.
I like the blocks hanging in the background of your video with the sunshine block and the pound sign block. Is there a pattern for these and what fabric did you use?
I pray youre doing well Melanie...God bless🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼
I also was wondering how you go from sewing one side of the column to a row. do you cut the thread and then sew along the top and bottom of each square to attach them?
New subbie here. I've been considering getting a mini-ironing board like the one you used in this video. Do you have a regular large one or do people not really use those huge ones anymore? lol I'm trying to simplify our lives and scale down.
I just use a flannel sheet for the batting and a plain sheet for the backing and a binding. I don;t quilt it. I tack it as in tying. It might be that some of the cottons I chose were a little more open weave and I sewed with 2.5 length. I know of people using home spun cottons - I don;t know if they zig zag the edges or what. Yes its at the seams that the problems occur, like the weave unravels or frays. Although if you saw it you'd think the weave wasn;t any looser than the other cottons.
My question, too. How do you get from the chain piece to the rows?
ok, it's 3 yrs since your question and a couple of others', hope you figured it out by now, but maybe this will help somebody else understand.
The columns are left in chains for a reason, so as to keep each column separate, in the order you want, and separated from the other columns.
You make the top row by cutting the chain of stitches between the top pr. of squares of each column and sew them together. Do the same with the rest of the columns. You will now have rows of the squares and not columns.
After you've completed each row, then you iron the seams the way she showed.
Then you stitch the rows together lining up the seams as she demonstrated.
I've joined.
I piece a row all the way across and then attach each row together to form the entire quilt. Does that answer your question?
Hi love,
im from England and I was wondering if you know of any brands that can ship to England. I am getting a new sewing machine for Christmas, and im really keen with quilting, I do it at school, please reply :)
Hi, can you guide me about wich machine I can buy to start working on patchwork .. thanks so much...
What are your settings on your machine when chain stitching your blocks? The tension setting?
Is there any chance you could do one of these made from baby grows ?? I really want to learn how to do them xx
harika ellerinize sağlık
teşekkürler
How would I finish the seams in the back as if to use as curtains with no backing? Any ideas?
Do you ever have an issue with bleeding of non pre-washed fabrics? I love the idea of charm packs but others have made me nervous.
Hola :), estoy interesada en saber cual puede ser el precio de estas colchas, usted puede darme esa información?
So so all boxes have too be sewn in a line or row ?
❤❤❤❤
If you are making a cover that is going to be washed, pinking shears should be fine, a zig zag is probably best and you only need to do that for seams that are exposed, so if they will be affected by the washer they need to be finished. I really have no experience working with metric measurements, sorry!
Can you tell me the name of the charm pack you used? I apologize if that's already been asked.
The first 2 rows you picked up from rhe right and placed on left, final 2 rows you picked up from left and placed on right!! So finished top did not look like the the squares you took photo of at start of this tutorial!!

I don't quite understand why you are doing the chain piecing. The video seems to skip from chain piecing to sewing rows together. Could you explain for me?
Pattern for mystery quilt
yeah i thought the same thing. Otherwise great video
U are so beautifull. Like tour work too.. I liked u..... Kisses. Iam from Algeria by the way.
why couldn't you iron the seams separated, then wouldn't you need to twist the corners?
ben lee en ñp
:-( sono italiana e non riesco a capirti!!! Guardo come lavori...
When you say Cut them off? You cut them to be separate again but they are attached by two. Then you sew those side by side. ( I got lost after that)
+Southern HoneyBee
yes me too i dont understand
Me too. I'm confused by that part
che brava... bello sarebbe se ci fossero i sottotitoli in italiano... ho capito poche parole sigh sigh

I was doing fine with this but lost you when you jumped from calling them columns and then suddenly went to rows..
For a complete beginner you skipped out way to much which left me with more unanswered questions. sighs.
