    genuinely terrifying shrapnel potential xD I can see why face mills are preferred for this type of process.

    This has to be my favorite large fly cutter design. more mass = less chatter, two tool bits, rough + finish cut, brilliant! Also having two tool bits seems to me like it would balance out the forces put into the tool and mill head. Thanks for the inspiration, you've got an aspiring amateur here hoping to replicate something very similar to your design!

      I started looking into large fly cutters such as this in hopes of being able to resurface motorcycle cylinder heads and cylinder blocks in my shop instead of taking it to the engine machine shop. I think with this and a nice power feed and some mill maintenance, I should be able to get fairly sufficient results with a very slow speed and a decent rpm selection. I have a few junk heads handy to experiment on...
      I just realized in your next video that I had read up on a lot of your bike work in the past... Thanks again for the knowledge, you are a true master.

      Most of my workshop efforts are directed to preparation of my own classic motorcycle race bikes. The fly cutter doesn't get a lot of work but it is invaluable when it does.

    Made one years ago, leading bit and trailing bit for finish cut, works great. Nice vid.

    Great primer on fly cutters from the vault, I like your two step approach, I may have to make one some time, thanks!

    This is a very clever fly cutter design. I saw one a long time ago and completely forgot about it, until i watched this video. Great job.

    Very interesting design Tony, I'll have to have a go at that one, nice to see you on UA-cam, I still have the kinematics CD and book I bought from you in 2005!

      @motochassis Haha, well life has taken me in a bit of a different direction for the time being, but if the need arises, I will certainly keep it in mind.

    FYI unfortunately your dropbox linked file to this tool no longer exists. I'd like to get a hold of any further information on how you built this for my endeavors. Thank you.

    i have a 10" blind flange for a fly cutter, its about 15kg, its not made yet, but your video has validated my design thoughts, i have a bridge port series one, do you have an opinion as to whether its a good match. and what size is your flange? thanks

      I made mine. There are many fly cutters on the market but I do not know of any with the two cutters and heavy rotor.

    its a very well done video no doubt about it. However be aware that any face mill such as 2 or 3 inches can be run with only one insert in or if all of them are in--any face mill with inserts the inserts are not exactly matched anyway so it does the same effect. Useing a giant cutter like that is a bit slow and you have to feed all the way on then all the way off--and you cannot cut in the normal way to race around climb cutting to deburr the edges. Doing that method a person can race along that block in at best ten seconds.. Just letting the people know what happen upon this that huge flycutters are not really the way to go especially now that face mills can be ordered brand new with inserts for a few dollars--since china makes them free to flood the market.

      another issue in which the method shown is very nice by a nice guy but inherintly wrong which is not apparent to beginners is that he is roughing alot--yet producing a finished surface behind??? not measuring--simply plowing over and calling it good? its much faster to cut in the normal manner.. that being said the video is uploaded to help as a favor and he is sharing to help and gets nothing for it--so I thank the guy but I do think its proper that in the comments that beginners see other opinions especially because they will be investing alot of time and trouble to do this..

      This is... not true. Fly cutters are used all the time and are great for what they are used for- creating a single flat plane. Sure CNC machines use shell mills more commonly, but thats not for the same purpose as a fly cutter, and most manual mills don't have the horsepower to utilize a shell mill effectively.

    • @crozwayne
      @crozwayne Рік тому

      @@liquerinfrnt But on a Bridgeport, or any vertical mill with an inclineable head, unless you tram absolutely square, you will produce anything other than flat!

    No way would I go that RPM on an R8 taper, and neither would i go that DOC too!
