  • Climb aboard Amtrak train 68, The Adirondack, for a ride south from Montreal Gare Centrale to New York Penn Station. Enjoy the view from the picture windows of Amtrak's only dome car as the train rolls through the Quebec farmland and along the shores of Lake Champlain. The leaves have begun to turn as autumn rolls into the Adirondack and Green Mountains. Night falls over the Hudson River as the train races south from Albany after changing locomotives and dropping the dome car. On this journey, train 68 was no more than 5 minutes late at any station, and arrived into Penn Station several minutes ahead of schedule.

    Finally! A video that documents the Albany to Montreal section of this train in detail. One thing I notice here - for anyone who wonders why this train takes so long to get from Montreal to Albany, this video shows why. First, note the landscape along the Lake Champlain shore preventing much track straightening/speeding up of the line. Second, notice how slow the train travels within Canada, and how it speeds up notably once it crosses into NY. Canadian National Railway (the host railroad in Canada) has let these tracks deteriorate so much that it doesn't appear it can go any faster than 50 MPH, with multiple sections where it can only travel at 10 MPH!!! Hopefully this can be resolved to a reasonable degree which, with the planned move of Customs inspections to Gare Centrale should speed up this train's schedule significantly.

    Thanks for posting! Took Adirondack from Whitehall, N.Y. to Montreal in early Sept of 2012., then back to Whitehall in early Nov. The section along the western side of Lake Champlain is spectacular. Same year, in Oct., took the "tren frances" from Santiago to Habana.

    It’s Saturday February 2nd 2019 I moved here to Florida in 2003 but when I was living in Fresno California I went with my Special ED Class to San Francisco on Amtrak. It was really fun. I am watching this UA-cam video on UA-cam Premium that I pay $15.99 a Month for.

    There was a couple old Electric locos that sat for quite a few years that were used to haul the steamers cars into the station and sat rusted just outside until they were repaired and fresh paint,used for service in Montreals Metro service,Only Electrics in Canada that im aware of! It was also quite a thing to sit up front in the Turbo Train early 70s just behind the drivers entering the station,got a view of everything around!

      Yeah those electrics were replaced by the MR90 EMUs. Now they've also got the ALP45DP electro/diesel locomotives as well.

    Question Amtrak’s Adirondack and Maple Leaf conductors and engineers change at a particular station?

    • @JBS319
      @JBS319  3 роки тому +2

      Crew change is at Albany and for the Maple Leaf there is another one at Niagara Falls, Ontario. Right now the Maple Leaf terminates at Niagara Falls, NY and the Adirondack terminates at Albany until the border reopens.

    Does it have seats where you can lay horizontally?

    • @gabrielapaulinho1luv
      @gabrielapaulinho1luv 5 років тому +3

      Lying across the seats (on The Adirondack) isn't permitted on a fully booked or mostly booked train. But, say, you're traveling off-season and, as I experienced in late November 2018, there are only 37 passengers scheduled to board, then you can sleep across two seats. You can change your seat -- but ask the conductor first before you do so. There's no seat assignment on The Adirondack, but the conductor knows where everyone's located if he or she already has scanned your e-ticket (i.e., the barcode of your e-ticket from your mobile phone).
      Don't know if you've taken this trip yet, as you commented last year, but please do so. It's one of our world's top 10 scenic rail journeys. Have fun!

    Wow, The Ocean View is still in service? I knew it was being used earlier in the year but I thought they would've put it in storage for maintenance considering the distance traveled and thee age of the Equipment.

      Amtrak was using it doing the fall season on the Adirondack, northbound for three days a week and southbound three days a week. I wish Amtrak had two to use everyday of the week northbound and southbound all season long... Maybe one of these days Amtrak will buy several new full dome cars for every east coast single level train like the Superliners long distance trains have Sightseeing Lounge Cars... There should be a investment for the one advantage a train has over airliners, full dome cars...

      Right now it has neither as service is suspended north of Albany. It normally has a cafe car but the observation car is no longer on Amtrak’s roster. Amtrak is purchasing new trains that will be used on the Adirondack route and other routes around the Northeast

      They are going through the town of St-jean-sur le-richelieu.... but: tracks in Canada are awfull like our roads... plus all other trains have right of way... so .. when i was going trough i had to WAIT 30 min at that juction.... (1h30 min from MTl to the border... wtf...) the track should stop at the USA /Can border and finish by bus...

    • @ronclark9724

      I have rode on both Amtrak and Via. The worst Amtrak tracks are by and large better than the best Via tracks. Amtrak keeps pressuring the America freight railroads to maintain a speed over 60 MPH, but there are weather related restrictions, ongoing track maintenance, and many slow old bridges. Especially during the summer with heat related track restrictions.
