    Also, I'm sorry for being MIA for a month! I've been really sick and burnt out from work. Hopefully everything is calming down now ~

    I can relate so much! I've lived in Ireland for a few months, and I got ill SO many times! And, like you said, they were much more severe too! It baffled me, since I hadn't been that sick in forever. It was such a bummer at times, when all I wanted to do was explore on the weekends, but I couldn't because it was better to get well so I could go back to work on Monday... But all the negative stuff aside, it's so much fun to get to know a new culture inside out, and to 'learn' new habits that you normally would've never picked up. Great video!

      It happens to so many expats! And it's happened to me every time I've come here on holiday as well. I think the new germs are just a massive shock to the system. I hope you enjoyed living there despite getting sick! Thank you so much, as well! 😊 I'm so glad you like them!

    I'm from Adelaide as well (and going to visit Tokyo this year!) so this video was really interesting. I found when I visited Hong Kong, I had the same attitudes on the trains. I didn't want to be "that inconsiderate foreigner." I love the aesthetic of your channel, it's so calm and nice.

    Welcome back 😊❤️
    I just came back from my (what seems to be) annual trip to Japan two weeks ago and I always like looking back on how my behaviour is different in Japan and how I can take it back to Germany. I think one of the first things I adopted back when I went in 2014 for the first time, was the way I treated taking trains/commuting to work. That probably sounds stupid but compared to Tokyo, Munich is really chaotic while commuting. Not so much the train system, but the people. There's no politeness here, it's not exactly rude either, but it's much, much different. I just started taking care of my surroundings more basically. The year afterwards, I tried to bring back some of the politeness towards customers since that impressed me so much that I wanted to try it at my workplace. And every year, I try to improve myself a bit more after coming back.
    Honestly, I wish I could go do work and travel with my best friend in Japan next year, but sadly that's not possible anymore because of my workplace and me not being able to just quit and leave everything behind 😭 I'm getting too old for that kind of visa too. But the more I can enjoy videos like your's and pick out the best stuff to experience the limited time I can stay every time 💕

      I hope you enjoyed your trip! No, that doesn't sound silly at all--so many places are chaotic. I'm from a slow, small city and even on our metro system people are more abrupt and less polite. It's good to try to take the best parts from every culture you experience. Especially kindness and politeness 😊 And I'm so glad you like my videos. Thank you, Laura 💛

    Hi! So I visited France for four weeks (I’m American from the Pacific Northwest) and I can tell you that I experienced the same thing! When I went to France, I was traveling in a large group. Commonly we all spoke English together, but at the hotel and when walking or on the metro, we all tried to speak French as much as possible. The hardest part for me was first, we walked or took the train everywhere! Where I live, the most walking I ever do is during school. I don’t walk for transport. Also, language! I found that while my French improved drastically, I was forgetting little English words! Like shop, groceries, etc. and it drove me insane! Nonetheless, I loved the experience of a hugely different culture! I feel like Japan would be a whole other experience, but I can totally relate!

    Aww I'm actually suprised about the sickness thing. When we holiday abroad never been sick but I guess living long term abroad might bring that on 😫. I want to go live in Turkey for a year with my family it's a dream for mine. But sick kids and me being sick would absolutely spoil things for us. Eeek here's hoping we acclimatise and don't fall pray to sickness and ill health on the regular.

    I love your vids! And I laughed when you described about your experiences with Japanese “creepers” . I lived in Japan for 6 years and in my experiences I was never targeted in that way because I “blended” in so much. I am full blooded Native American and I do have some similar features to Japanese although I am more on the darker side. Hahaha. I don’t know maybe it was my stoic native women look on my face but I was never approached in such way... BUT... my girl friends who were light skin, blonde hair , blue eyed American (accent and all) they always were followed just as you described! I think it’s because the “creepers” just want to get their fantasy of communicating with that “American girl” . I one time had to step in between a guy asking for my friends number on a train cause he basically would not give up harassing her for her number to teach him English sometime. Don’t get my wrong Japan generally was very very safe but those instances you described do happen more times than not!

    • @christy-anne-jones
      @christy-anne-jones  6 років тому +1

      You've absolutely hit the nail on the head! That's exactly right. It's just creepy people looking for the fantasy foreigner of light skin, blonde hair, blue eyes which is ridiculous because the VAST majority of the foreigners here aren't Caucasian, but are from north-east Asia. And foreigners who don't fall into this privileged category get treated differently (sometimes they get treated far worse). There are privileges that come with being blonde hair, green-eyed here (my hair gets complimented CONSTANTLY) even if I get followed/harassed sometimes. I'm really glad you didn't have to go through it as much! And omg your poor friend 😧 It's lucky you were able to step in and help. You're right it is very safe, but these things do happen and it's really unfortunate. I just try to deal with it. I know the behaviour isn't reflective--most people here are kind and considerate and lovely.

    I'm a British person teaching English in Japan and I can relate SO MUCH to the accent shift 😂I usually end up teaching my own accent/vocabulary but then just explaining the difference with the American language in the textbook

    • @christy-anne-jones
      @christy-anne-jones  6 років тому

      One of my work colleagues is Scottish with a really thick accent! He does the same thing. I feel bad because my accent is quite neutral so its not too hard for me, but it's so difficult for him. Sometimes I explain it. Like, I spent a whole lesson teaching my kids that antennae was pronounced 'antenneeee' rather than 'antennaaay' and had to explain at the end. But most of my kids are around seven y.o. so it's a bit difficult. Some words I just CAN'T say the American way, like 'o' sounds (oboe, for example).
      I'm so glad to find someone who empathises! hahaha 😂

      Japanese food is amazing! I absolutely love it. Traditional food is mostly healthy, but there is a lot really cheap, really unhealthy, really yummy foods here as well. Which is great because it's delicious, but terrible because it's bad for you ahaha 😂

    You're lucky you've lost weight, I've gained soooo much here! Also my English has gotten worse and my accent is slightly American/rounded too! I'm super aware of everything too, especially of myself because everyone is always staring/taking pictures ughhh

    • @christy-anne-jones
      @christy-anne-jones  6 років тому +1

      So many people put on weight when they come here! I was worried I would and, in our first month living here, I think I did until I got settled. There's so much unhealthy food, and it's so cheap. I really miss cheap fruit and veg from home (especially avocados). And yeah my English has been ruined hahah even though, ironically, I'm studying a Master's in it.
      The pictures/staring is annoying. I've learned to mostly ignore it (I went to Beijing during Chinese New Year--I have never been stared at in Japan NEARLY as much as I was on the day I went to Tiananmen Square. Not exaggerating: like over 30 people took pictures of me/Tyler within the space of an hour. So here isn't nearly as bad as there hahah).

    In Japan, it is OK to totally ignore these creepy ones and that is what all the others do. The same with the sales men/women.
    Just ignore. Otherwise they find a way to get to talk to you.
