- The incredible Covent Garden Medea in the amazing BJR sound. Again, i did my best with the time i have to remove the largest pops and clicks but there are faint ones throughout.
Maria Callas: Medea
Jon Vickers: Giasone
Joan Carlyle: Glauce
Nicola Zaccaria: Creonte
Fiorenza Cossotto: Neris
Mary Wells: Prima ancella
Elizabeth Rust: Seconda ancella
David Allen: Un capo delle guardie
Nicola Rescigno conducts the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden
Recorded 30 June, 1959, Covent Garden.
The sound is really very pleasing. Almost everyone is addicted to the Medea performance from Dallas ´58 but i prefer this one- Callas is supernaturally in this evening.
I like this, but there is something even more spacial about Dallas. She was absolutely on fire that night, and I think she was in even better voice there.
My favorite of all singers, in my favorite of all operas! ONLY Callas ever truly WAS Medea! None other can even come close! Thank you for posting!
Dear John,
.... yes, indeed, you did your very best with the BJR-sound and so its quite a great plesure!!! to listen to this wunderful and complete Callas-record ,,,, thanks a lot !

omgidbi! Thank you turnipoverlord. This is a treasure. May you never meet Medea's wrath in your lifetime!
gracias ! maravilloso!
Thank you for sharing this!
¡ Magnífico !
Amazing sound. omg
"Triste canto!" A sad song for every operatic soprano who knows she can't ever sing this way, which is everyone. At least Antonacci has the balls to try, and has the right temperament, if not the vocal schmaltz. Honni soit qui mal y pense.
Thank you ^^ Callas FTW :D
Chime in anyone.....this was the beginning of late callas, but it’s so phenomenal! She went on to record the second Norma in 1960 and her voice was markedly different...what happened? Had she kept this voice thru the 60s it would’ve been great?
Joan Sutherland should have sang Glauce in this recording. That would made this heavenly.
