    So important! Nice one.

    It’s also good manners that when you paddle for and then miss a wave, you don’t go for the next one and let the other people around you have a shot... otherwise the line up just ends up aggressive because everyone starts paddling for everything that comes.
    Give a few waves... they might have a good looking sister 😏

    “When a surfer is up and riding, it’s everyone else’s responsibility to get out of their way”.
    While collision avoidance is definitely a shared responsibility, in the case of a collision where a paddler has done their best to paddle out of the surfer’s way, there can be no question as to who is ultimately responsible: the surfer up and riding.
    As with all right of way laws across traffic spectrums, right of way must be ceded to the person with the least ability to maneuver. A surfer up and riding has far greater speed and turning ability than a paddler, therefore, in the case of a collision, it’s ultimately the surfer up and riding responsible for damages.

      A shared responsibility of course with lots of grey areas.

    Great stuff man..so many people dont understand that paddling for a wave means you go to the back of the que even if you dont catch the wave.

    Recently moved to an area with some amazing surfing spots and seriously contemplating taking up surfing. The etiquette rules and risk of being a kook scares me more than the ocean 😂

      Hey Allison, that sounds like a great idea. No need to worry about that, all you have to do is treat others how you would want to be treated. Easy :)

    A couple of other remarks; If you take off outside the rest of the lineup or considerably outside anyone located at the inside who is also sitting deeper than you - you still have priority if you are up and standing and therefore surfing the wave before the guy / girl on the inside has had the chance to paddle OR get up to his / her / their feet. Snaking by paddling around and deeper the outside of somebody but ending up with the same distance to the beach as the person you paddled around is also snaking -not only if you do it on the inside like you mentioned? If you paddle past and transverse somebody to end up deeper but further out that’s another matter (completely acceptable) but maybe not in your first paddle out if you are not a respected local / experienced surfer at that spot and don’t take a wave at once when you reached your waiting spot). Also even paddling on the shoulder of a wave will make it start breaking more easily because of the weight of you and your board on the lip so if you can avoid it - don’t even paddle on a way when you don’t have the right / priority and are sitting the deepest.

    Been surfing since 1986 and still surfing. Agree with most of what you said here but two points I would like to make; I would actually forgive that first drop in at the beginning if the video. That guy on the SUP seems to be miles away and on top of that the wave serms to be breaking a little between you (white water on top of crest) and it even looks like it’s about to break completely. Might be the fish eye lens making it look like a lesser offense though. The other point is that I never heard about the rule concerning who has waited for the longest for a wave. That seems to me to be totally impossible to enforce in reality and the period of waiting for each surfer depends on way to many factors to even consider + it’s practically impossible with many surfers in the spread around a big line up - or even a smaller more focused one. Waiting for ways or the “right” wave may be due to board size / boancy, personal preferences, skills, guts (yes some people are more scared of or don’t have the skills to take of deeper or on bigger waves or they might be scared of being caught inside and are therefore sitting too far out or too far out on the shoulder parallel to the beach / point. There are so many reasons why this rule won’t work that I can’t even list everything here).

    This should be on a continuous loop at MANY BREAKS

  • @jeremygreer4039
    @jeremygreer4039 3 роки тому

    It's difficult to figure out _how_ to avoid someone sometimes. When they're on the wave, they move really fast. Should you usually try and head for the break, going between the surfer and the beach?

    • @TheSurfersJourney
      @TheSurfersJourney  3 роки тому +1

      It can be hard for sure, the surfer who is up and riding shouldn't just run people over. But by paddling to the already broken part of the wave, you will be moving in the opposite direction to the surfer and hopefully get out of the way.

    So many knobheads down in Bali need to watch this. Idiots calling beginners ‘kooks’ just for having a lower ability. Totally self absorbed and living in a fantasy world - simply rude. Beginners cannot be blamed for having a lower ability. Everyone’s a beginner at first. It’s when people act disrespectful or selfishly that renders then a ‘look’ or, in other terminology, something a little stronger starting with the sound phoneme

      Good question. If it is possible try to move around each other while paddling in so there is no issue. If this is not possible, the surfer who is up and riding first has priority.

    I've seen milion people snaking in my life.... i think is difficult to point it out... many guys do it and don't understand it is not nice... however sometimes it is hard to tell who's making the mistake like the caise of the 2 guys on the converging wave...

    I agree with everything except your “Who’s in the Que” comment because when you paddle out to a crowded lineup nobody has a number and you don’t know how long someone has been waiting. So keep close to the curl and don’t snake someone!

    • @TheSurfersJourney
      @TheSurfersJourney  3 роки тому +1

      When you get out to the lineup to start with, you default to the back of the que and then work your way up from there.
