This was an underrated band, replicating exactly the classic GM quartet with Chet Baker with the experience of years and the unique sound of Art Farmer.
These recordings have actually been released on CD here in sweden in 1989 and then again in 2010 (a european release). I think the titles “spring is spring” and “utter chaos” might be funny for a slightly uncultivated Swedish crowd in the late 50’s. Because “spring” is the swedish word for run and “is” is ice so they might have heard “run ice run”. And then we have “utter” which is the word for otter and “chaos” is the same here in sweden but with another spelling so “otter chaos” might come off as a rather silly title for a jazz tune. Hope this information is helpful;)
Bill Crow - recently saw him in NJ with Leonike Schuebel and her dad Nick (three generations of jazz). Picked up the Gerry Mulligan original Night Lights at a large flea market for $3.
Love the turntable. It’s given me a reason to go back through my records to sort of re-experience everything. Mix of the new table, the mono and stereo swappable carts plus these tower speakers I have now. Perhaps too many new components but like I said, it’s given me a reason to revisit so much music
I’ve noticed the same desire when there’s a big enough improvement, you certainly know you’re going in the right direction, in 40+ years I’ve only gone backwards once, luckily it was just a cartridge. Glad to hear she makes the vinyl sing. 👍
Very thoughtful review as usual. Thanks for that and all the others! Will pick this up as I really enjoy Mulligan. Quick question: what color did you paint your music room? Thanks so much!
The paint color is called Sea Serpent by Sherwin Williams. I chose it because I wanted something that was in the same color family as the McIntosh amplifier dials

More bari-led albums is always a good thing!

How are you enjoying your Luxman Turntable?

Love Gerry. I'm so excited for this release! Incidentally, did you have a preference for the NewLand or AP version of Night Lights?
I have never heard the AP edition actually
