yeah the troggs were so cool. and then they crossed everyone up with 'love is all around' which was like the polar opposite of wild thing - beautiful song that i still play now and then
Yes, this was a song from "The Archies" Saturday morning cartoon show. Many one hit wonder bands were made up of the same studio musicians who produced hit after hit. The same musicians performing under several different names. Some personal trivia: I bought this 45 RPM single!!
Wow. Still love this song so much! Watched the cartoon & read the comic strip! My brother is autistic and one year older than me. We danced to this hundreds of times! 1971 & all through our childhood. Our first dance, I was 5 yrs and he was 6 yrs. I remember this like yesterday! We held hands and shoulders and we rocked back and forth in a slow dance style turning in a circle! The adults would play this over and over to watch and exclaim over the cuteness. I didn't mind because it was the only time that my brother danced! I was honored to be his partner! I still love this song & those memories of he and I dancing to Sugar Sugar.
No. 1 in the US on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1969 and remained there for four weeks. It was also No.1 on the UK Singles chart in that same year for eight weeks.
This song is 28 years older than me and here I am singing along. I need to find out if you have ever reacted to The Foundations and Build Me Up Buttercup because I want to hear that after this. ❤️ This also might actually be the studio version, I’ve only ever heard it sound like this anyway.
Build me up Buttercup was the song that played at the end of the movie There's Something about Mary. It's awesome, the whole cast and crew lip sync to it.
Gary Rogers. My parents did such a good job of introducing me to all the music they had grown up with. I love so many songs from different decades and I am always thinking that when I’m much older I could be listening to songs that are 100 years old and that is pretty cool to me.
Coming to America 🇺🇸 I spoke little English, but I could some how sing along with this song. This song brings back so many memories of my childhood. I love this song so much I asked my mom for some money to go to the local Dime Store and I bought the 45. The Dime store in case you don't know, is similar to the Dollar store. The first time I heard this song I was riding in the back of a car staring at the sky looking at the trees and looking at the beautiful green grass and I thought this is a great country.
Excited for this reaction! I loved watching the Archies as a kid and reading the comic books. Its a cute little song. We kids around the neighborhood on Guam would go outside and dance when someone had the little record and would put it on their porch.
OMG! FUN FACT: In the 60's when I was growing up, there was a kid's cartoon on tv called The Archies. The Archies were a fictional band with a Saturday morning animated show and a comic book series. "Sugar Sugar" hit #1 in 1969. You could get a thin plastic copy of the song on the back of a box of Alpha Bits cereal. A year later Wilson Picket charted with his version of "Sugar Sugar".
Hi from the UK , absolutely loved this song OMG I am so old , but I remember a lot of times with this ,,in love ,, out of love ,, in love ,, well you all know what I mean 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 .
@@JayveeTV When I was a kid, after the barber cut my hair he would give me a piece of bubblegum with a tiny Archies comic wrapped around it. The bubble gum was hard, chalky and took forever to chew it soft. But once you got it ready to go, you could get epic bubbles.

My dad use to listen to this oldies station when I was a kid so I grew up with like AC/DC and stuff cause he was into it, then the station played this song and it was like my little ten year old heart melted. Instant crush on the main singer. The radio played it again a few weeks later and I just remember leaning against the counter, inches from the radio, wishing I had a tape to record the song so I could listen to it for forever
You have brought back SOOO many memories for so many people by reacting to this song. This is the epitome of Bubble Gum music. I remember being at my grandmother's (she had cable) and watching Archie's Funhouse.... oh man sweet times. Would love to have just one of those days back again! The Archie's group was Archie, Reggie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica.... you can still find the clips on here.
I love me some bubblegum pop!! This song was number 1 that year! The singer Ron Dante also had a band called the Cuff Links, and there song “Tracy” Bit number 2 around the same time. They were both in the top 10 at the same time!
When I was 10 yrs old I went on a summer trip with some schoolkids. That was 1970! We stayed at a lovely 'almost' mansion. Around 7.00pm we'd be singing together with SUGAR SUGAR 1970!!!
Written by by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim. Ron Dante sang the lead vocals and went on to produce albums for Barry Manilow. Andy Kim a Canadian from Montreal, went on to a solo career. His biggest hit was Rock me Gently.
Lead singer was Ron Dante. He did a lot of session work, commercials, background singing. He was the lead singer for a group called the Cuff Links, although he was the only singer (they overdubbed all of the voices, which were his, as they did with his work on The Archies). In October of 1969 he had two songs in the top 10 (Sugar Sugar and Tracy by the Cuff Links) and he wasn't mentioned on either one of the records.
When I was a kid, I had a copy of this song, but it was made of cardboard, and was on the back of a box of breakfast cereal. Sounded ok at first, but deteriorated really fast.
The woman was Toni Vine who voiced both Betty and Veronica of The Archies. She went on to write a huge hit for Tony Orlando called "Candida." The song was co-written by Andy Kim who went on to have a big hit of his own in 1974 called "Rock Me Gently.' And the TV cartoon and band were created by Don Kirschner using "The Monkees' TV show from a few years earlier. Before this song, The Archies put out a single only reaching #53 on the charts. So Kirschner - believing so strongly in Sugar Sugar - thought audiences would unfairly compare it with Feels So Good - the previous song. So, they went around to radio stations across the country, had DJs play the song from a record with no band name listed to see if they would air it. They loved it and did - being told to tell listeners it was by a "mystery group." Once phone lines lit up and people started wondering where they could purchase the record - it was finally re-released about two months later identifying the band as "The Archies."
Hahaha the other guys you saw in the band”band” was the singer 😊. Yes, this guy and a gal, I do not know her name, sessions singer...anyway, the first time i saw this was a young kid during The Archie’s show. They were high school kids- 3 boys, 2 girls. Archie, Veronica, Jughead...can’t think of the rest. Heard this song the first time on that show when they had The Archie’s playing it. It’s hard not to love.
The one singing lead vocals is Ron Dante, he is a singer songwriter, and producer. He produced the first nine Barry Manilow albums...he's also my friend on facebook
You need to watch this song as they sing it in the cartoon... It's great remembering all the old songs you review. Brings back awesome memories....thanks!!!
Sugar Sugar was written by Andy Kim from Montreal and Jeff Barry from NYC. It became the title track for the Archies, a fictional cartoon group. The Archies was both a cartoon and a comic strip.
3:56 these are the five main characters from Archie comics which later became a Saturday morning cartoon. They are teenage friends who formed a band, the Archies. They sung many songs but only sugar sugar went from cartoon to real life. There was another band Josie and the Pussycats. They later became a Saturday morning cartoon as well.
Jayvee, my elder step brother took me as as a munchkin who loved Sugar Sugar to Dark Side of the Moon. Mind explodes. I was never the same. Love that you’re walking in so many footsteps and enjoying “pop” music.
Reminds me, every time I hear it of sitting on the curb with the neighbors across the street listening to kezy a popular radio station at the time. We waited for that song to come on, then we'd all jump up and start dancing all over the curb and street.
If you haven't found out yet, this was the studio version. I don't remember ever seeing this video before but you can see Ron Dante singing, playing the drums, guitar and tambourine all at the same time (but he really only did the vocals on this record) and there's a female singer (Toni Wine) not there, so it is not a live performance. I never thought of The Archies as a one-hit wonder. Three of their other singles made the Top 40 (in the US): "Jingle, Jangle"(reached number 10), "Bang-Shang-A-Lang"(number 22) and "Who's Your Baby?"(number 40) and I loved many other Archies songs (and still do). "Sugar, Sugar" may have been the biggest bubble-gum song of all time and I believe it was the number one song on the Billboard chart for the year 1969. "Get On the Line" is one of their best songs IMHO and should have been released as a single.
ron dante is the lead singer in this group and he wrote quite a few jingles for popular commercials in the 60's. i saw him perform at the calvin theater in northampton, mass. in 2018 on the 'happy together tour'. also in that show were the turtles, the cowsills, the association, mark lindsay of paul revere and the raiders and chuck negron of three dog nite. it was a spectacular 60's oldies revue. great night.
Oh yeah! I watched The Archies on TV. I was 13 at the time, and loved the music. It was played quite a lot on the radio station we listened to, so at the time, I was pretty familiar with their music. Funny though, now, 'cause I couldn't tell you what any of their other songs were. Still love this one, though! Great reaction, J.
Veronica says "I can make life so sweet". I also remember cutting the record off the back of a "Sugar Crisp" box, putting in on the turntable and listening to this song. Wish I had kept that record. Life was so simple when I was a kid.
The lead singer was Ron Dante. He had a minor hit as a member of the group The Detergents doing Leader of the Laundromat (A parody of the song Leader of the Pack). He also sang lead for a group called The Cufflinks with the song Tracy.
Oh, this takes me back! I had some K-Tel records when I was a little girl full of songs like this (and weird novelty songs like Beep Beep #lol). Sugar Sugar is a genre classic, fun & bubbly, & gets you moving. There's another song off one of those records I know you'd like called Nice to Be With You, by Gallery. I think it might be a one hit wonder.
I remember my mom cutting out the '45' from the back of a cereal box. made my folks play it to death. god I am old. haha
