FEMA made my parents in law jump through tons of hoops to get rental assistance and now say they will not help because we have insurance. Shame on all of them we will never sell this sacred land. We are protectors and will never let them forget what happened here.
It was obviously more important that we pay the pensions of government officials in Ukraine. Disgusting. The governor,mayor and police chief in Lahaina are big time criminals. They are obfuscating and lying about this incident.
What would happen if all the tourists just set up camp on their property and others in support of Lahaina people and in protest of this corruption? They are playing the if we can’t have it no one can card like immature greedy selfish bad kids 😂

That’s my second cousin, Aina Kohler & our home on Front Street is also now dust. Her surf school was an awesome outlet for the kids in the KamIII Elementary school… now also burnt down. Our hearts are still broken… the government needs to help. For the first week after it was community effort for survival. We are lucky that we, and our pets made it out alive. There was no warning. 💔
One thing we all learn quickly, don't count on the government. They do things in their best interest, not ours. I hate to say that, but it's true.
Sadly this is just what happens its happened all over its proof of climate changing

The Hawaiians named it that because it was always a dry and hot climate.

I am so very sry. That just blows my mind that you weren't given warning. Those bells should've 🔔 been going off. Like even the making of this video. There's someone laying on the beach. Looks like the fumes from the fire overcame her. Someone in the vehicle says how someone is laying there. The driver says no!!! They didn't have the time. Like you gotta be kidding me? They were right there. 2 of them popped out & grabbed her. She probably would've lived. It would've only taken 2 secs...1 min tops. I'm not 100% sure...but I thought the people taping the video were fire fighters...& if that's is indeed true. They should be let go from fire fighting.🔥 cuz they should never had let that woman lay there & die forsure. I really was taken back by that. Not cool whatsoever
The people of Hawaii and specifically Lahaina, have been robbed, and everyone should be outraged. Who is behind it, and what can be done to hold them accountable and help the people there?

what about the other towns that burned in California? I am asking because I have no idea how they are doing now and if they got robbed. I am trying to get a new insurance to cover my house because our current one will be terminating. We live in a low risk area, . Big insurer companies are running out of California in drove. The water was shut off, the electricity was hot, the children were sent home and no cell service. They sent the people into the fire. The ones that went around the barricades survived. This is not normal. This is how they take the land.
They shut the schools down the day before due to the winds. Did you watch any of the police body cam directly disputing them “blocking the roads” 🙄 there were no barricades blocking people from leaving the town, they stopped the people from going into lahaina. There was no cell phone service because all of the infrastructure was knocked out from the Highwinds.
And we have sent over 75 billion dollars to Ukraine, and the Lahaina residents get barely anything when they are part of us. SMH

Long time Maui visitor here, for close to 50 years. The Aug. 2018 fire should've been a wake up call to the potential for a catastrophic fire. No one at the county government level did enough to prevent this. Herman Andaya's incompetence bordered on criminality and as a result untold people lost their lives unnecessarily. Both the county and state government have lacked any transparency and have denied the victims of this fire access to their homes or what's left of their property. BTW my sister was on island for both fires and her oldest son narrowly missed being stuck in Lahaina that afternoon. I am in anguish and anger as I think of what my friends and the residents have lost. Lahaina was a treasure, a treasure that shouldn't have been lost.
If it wasn't all intentional it was definitely intentional neglect and definitely no support. How sad. I hope those people never sell their land, if that's an option

I lived in Wahikuli.. though my house is gone, i'am thankful for my life and those of my roommates. My prayers still go out to my neighbors and many others in Lahaina. but we will rebuild. #LahainaStrong
I'm sorry this happened to you all. Bottom line, greed is what caused this fire. Bottom line, the power should have been shut off due to the high winds, and the alarms should have been sounded. Tsunami's are rare, those alarms should be for all uses.
The alarms were clearly outlined by the city documents and procedures to be used for a fire as well. Leadership failure.

The power lines were deenergized by 10 AM on the 8 th. Powerlines falling down had nothing to do with this destruction . ADP Towing company and a brand new affordable housing complex called Kaiaulu o Kupuohi just opened in December of 2022, were completely burned to the ground and both facilities are in a large commercial complex with underground utility lines . Kaiaulu o Kupuohi was a brand new completely concrete building that could not have caught fire from " embers " or telephone lines even if there were any in that complex ( which there are not ). Whatever burned Kaiaulu o Kupuohi to the ground was arson. Whether that arson was with diesel, or gasoline, or chemical accelerants like thermite matters not. It was burned to the ground by arson.
NBC please edit and blur the image of the lady on the ground. This community is small and her family still lives here. Did you even reach out to them?

There was a clear warning at the beginning of the video. News programs give fair warning. If it bothers you, you shouldn’t have watched it. I knew it was coming so I don’t put blame on the news channel. If you want to see what this tragedy was in all its reality and you choose to watch a documentary that warned you of graphic images beforehand, don’t complain afterward. I agree it’s difficult to watch, but you were warned.
Stop overacting with such nonsense, that woman is laying with her back to camera(nobody can recognize her) plus as some people have no clue,that those guys probably couldn't help her because outside was extremely hot...in the end she was probably gone...Unfortunately
This is beyond shameful. Those few people who could’ve acted differently so as to have prevented this tragedy should face the consequences, whether the legal ones is their present lives, or the moral ones in whatever comes next.

When they speak of “land grabs” they are speaking of after effects. Problem is most of these yahoos are freshly elected. By the time the elections roll around again the damage will be irreversible. They need to be removed from office NOW to send a clear signal to officials who think the public won't push back on failed policies.

This was and is a sickening display of incompetence for all those in charge of peoples safety in the community. A breakdown in communication and action in every aspect. Those who had a hand in this will one day get the karma they deserve, unfortunately at the cost of those that perished.
Surviving residents of Lahiana report they had no power the day of the DEW fire, the electricity was off.
That’s because all the telephone poles went down 🙄 80+ mile per hour winds, dozens of telephone poles down, dry conditions and a town with terrible infrastructure to begin with as what they were dealing with that day
@@chair9416Also, when the Poles began falling at 5 AM and Fires were popping up in high dangerous winds and the electricity was off, The Mayor of Maui never ever called a state of Emergency until after People borned alive and a horror of gridlock occurred and the town was leveled....then Mayor Bissen calls for help for the National Guard at 9:45 PM. I truly hope someone at NBC News will dig a little deeper into the people behind the fires (plural) that were used to wipe this amazing place off the map. I have been able to do my own research online and from afar and have found too many troubling details and connections and probabilities. I'd like to know if criminal investigations are ongoing, if motives and means are being explored, as opportunities certainly existed and continue to exist. The locals need added help, as they have already shared witness accounts of things that do not add up to 'just a bad day' or 'just a wildfire that got too big'. Please conduct investigative reporting. Imagine if this had been some other small town or city but on the mainland - like at Carmel or Monterey or Palo Alto in California - what would the response be? What if it were intentional, planned, executed, and now being disposed of? Please investigate.
Network TV never will be honest in the reporting about this. Those who own the networks, own the news are also those hoping to bank on the land grab going down.
NBC News did not take the time to truly research and explain the Fire and all the details of the failed emergency Response to the public! So, what was put out here was incomplete and Lacking, placating the public when the Truth is.......We still don't have the full Truth and all the facts about this fire!
i really thought that Paradise fires were some of the worst, but this one was so unexpected or sudden even compared to that one. Hawaii is so beautiful, I have always wanted to go there (I couldn't afford to live there from what I hear.) It LOOKS like Paradise, and it can become that again.
I left Maui the day before this fire happened and I am still in shock this happened. This is so sad😢
All they had to do was de-energize the power grid before it started the fires & HECO had plenty of time to do it.
And no one would have complained?
We're over reliant on electricity and the inevitable complaints about no power would have factored in the decision.

HECO did deenergize the lines by 10 AM on the 8 th. I'm not sure how this " documentary " got that fact wrong. Even police tapes confirm that every time police officers called to report a downed line, the HEcO operators kept telling them they'd deenergized the lines. Many people didn't have electricity as early as 4 AM on the 8 th. NBC needs to do better with their fact checkers.

I was there. I live in Launiupoko above Lahaina. Watched it burn. We have been, for years complaining about the old electrical lines. Hawai’i Electric is to blame

Great documentary on several levels…. What it doesn’t show is the terror and extreme emotions of the people that had to flee the fire, and the people who have lost loved ones. So for me, this documentary was just a little bit too analytical and flat.

It isn’t the deadliest fire. We lost more people, structures etc in the Camp Fire. There are several documentaries. We just hit the 5 yr mark & we’re barely coming back. They have a long road ahead. I’d know. God bless and be with them.

Brilliant editing. Top, top shelf. I am previously familiar with a good portion of the content and this was a masterpiece of creating a documentary with a great production team and an editor who is exceptional.

Not true. I contacted the production team to clarify that. Also, there was a clear warning that the video was graphic. Watch the news any day and there are warnings when graphic photos and video are going to be shown. This is NBC which is news.
It's difficult to believe that anyone feels they can't do anything to save someone who is only suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

@@williamking3166Not judging, but it reflects lack of fire and hazmat education in their state and/or community. They ran from their houses when fire was discovered, which means she wasn't on the road for more than a few minutes. She could have been saved with fresh air and CPR.

Wait, if the power had been turned off, why were people detained because of powerlines being down. People can drive over poles! if the power is off. What option did people have? THIS was murder. There are real answers, but it's being ignored.
Have you driven over a utility pole? Or several? The town was trapped. Each end of the town was blocked and all in between was either blocked by down utility poles or the fire racing down Lahainaluna.

Nobody was detained why don’t you do some research and watch the police body cameras that shows people exiting through all the roads that were supposedly “blocked off”. One small matter if I may please; on my three months on Maui, I have discovered that many Hawai’ians do not consider themselves Americans & their land as part of America. Something to do with the events of 1893 & the official apology (and now a law of the USA) in 1993.

I was in the Thomas Fire, also started by power lines in the wind. I would much rather they cut the electricity than risk the fire.
The water pumps needed electricity. Not sure what happened with generator backup. Even so, they did de-energize at 6am. I think a mixture of wind and dry conditions is dangerous no matter what. We are getting more windstorms in Lahaina as time goes on. At this point …I think every November, December we will have wind like this. There will be more fires
Me too. Watched the Thomas Fire go from one side of my view to the other so quickly. Lost a friend in the Lahaina fire.
We, as a society, can and should take detailed notes of similar situations from around the world. The same thing happened in the Umpqua National forest a couple of yrs ago. our power company had ample warning of dangerous power lines and branches tangled or in contact with active lines. it was extremely dry and strong winds that just destroyed so much.
yes, those who neglected to heed warning should be held accountable.

There have been quite a few “worst fires” I agree Lahaina was the worst but it seems like every year there is another “worst fire”
Dang those dudes in the truck straight up left that woman for dead. Would of taken 20 second to stop and lift her into cab.
If you go on google street view and look at all these neighborhoods that burnt they are all surrounded by knee-high dead grass. When you live in a coastal environment where winds exist you just can't have that. Same with above ground power lines. We place them underground in ohio why would hawaii and CA where wayyy higher winds exist not do the same?
They really need to look into pumps built for chlorine or acids and just use massive monitors pulling from the ocean.
Don't forget that outside was extremely hot from that fire...in the end they could get burn to death from that heat as many that day...that's why they stayed in the car and continued to drive...😎

Calif has fires SEASON every year. Everywhere has weather, no escaping it.
Seawater should have been pumped in to help put out the fire...Edison electric was finally held responsible for the fire called the 'Powerhouse' fire in Los Angeles County in which 30 homes were destroyed but 0 lives. were lost, many years of litigation passed before homeowners were awarded.compensation. There can never be compensation for the lives that were lost that day due to no real evacuation plan being executed...I can feel the anger at this loss of action at the momumental failure to save lives❤god bless the survivors...

All of our powerlines inside towns are underground and the high voltage lines have metal poles. Why isn't this the case there?

Interviewing the fire dept? Interesting choice. You should interview the people who were actually there. I've listened to the 911 calls and watched the video of the chaos. The first responders failed the people they swore to protect. Now developers are trying to steal their property. Talk about that.
Have you watched the body cameras where police are rescuing dozens and dozens of people 🙄 more than 20 firefighters and at least a dozen police officers lost everything they have their houses and their loved ones.. dozens of telephone poles down, 80 mph winds, dry conditions and a town with terrible infrastructure to begin with as what they were dealing with that day.

There’s lots of body camera footage that directly shows the opposite. Why don’t you do some research there was dozens of cops and firefighters that lost everything they own, their houses and their loved ones. The roadblocks were preventing people from going into the town towards the fire. Get real
I think the justification was that smoke made driving on the highway very dangerous, but that was their only escape route, if I understand correctly. So it makes no sense. They should have let people take the risk. Put up signs saying “drive carefully-smoke ahead” or something, but don’t block the only exit. It feels like this was all done on purpose. It was either legendary neglect of duty from a long list of government officials and other key players, or it was an orchestrated mass murder for some reason.
So developers could get rich quick by buying all the burnt land for cheap and renting it out at exorbitant prices to corporations to build tourist attractions?
So elitists and globalists could point to the incident and erroneously blame it on global warming and climate change to get more people to support their preferred policies, all to consolidate power and grow even richer?

I don't buy their reasons for not using their sirens as most modern systems also double as public address systems that can send correct information to the public. Now if these were so old that they weren't capable of doing this, then that is another discussion.

@@empressashley4808Hurricane Dora was a hurricane in the Pacific ocean....the hurricane sustained its strength thruout the trek from California to Hawaii. NWS gave some advisories about her path. But as she moved closer to the islands, no weather alerts were issued except for possible winds. Dora did come close to our islands because during the hours when she was "brushing" Maui, here on Oahu, the winds were pretty gusty....but still no alerts. Also, the NWS has "missing" data from the time when high winds hit Lahaina.

it's heartbreaking to make any suggestions when the worst has already happened, and so many people have died.
but I will offer the tale of two Californias: the one up north that has above ground powerlines and enormous fires and loss of life, and the coast from Orange County to San Diego boxed in between dry brush hills and the ocean, where the powerlines are put below ground due to high Santa Ana winds and extreme fire danger outweighing the risk of earthquakes snapping underground infrastructure - which is bad, but still not as deadly and widespread as a firestorm. and Maui, at least, isn't likely to have earthquakes strong enough to damage underground lines, although the big island might.
The question is money. I hope you can win some of your lawsuits against the power company and force them to move their lines underground. there are other reasons for fires to start when the fire, danger is high, but that should not be at one of them.

I saw what looked like Ring Cam footage pointing out thru the gate or door outside of the place where the fire started. It might not have been verified...but now im curious if it was even really the footage or just some tiktok clout grab

I would investigate this straight away that be the first point you go up go look at the wood go look at the infrastructure if it were deep enough, why did it fall down that’s poor maintenance to me if it fell down look at the film I will look at where it started, the film should show you how bad the wood was was it Paul or was it rotted and it just collapsed the evidence will be still there.
