- Billy Budd 1962.
With Peter Ustinov as Vere
Robert Ryan as John Claggart
Terence Stamp as Billy Budd
Music from Brittens Billy Budd.
Claggart's Aria - Michael Langdon:
("Oh beauty, oh handsomeness, goodness! Would that I never encountered you! Would that I lived in my own world always, in that depravity to which I was born... But alas, alas! The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness comprehends it and suffers... I am doomed to annihilate you... I will mutilate and silence the body where you dwell. It shall hang from the yard-arm, it shall fall into the depths of the sea... With hate and envy I am stronger than love... I have you in my power, and I will destroy you"
Best line is "No! I cannot believe it! That were torment too keen!" presumably when it's dawning on him that he might be in love with Billy. Enigmatic music at that point.
@@shirleyjones5530 excuse me? That is incredibly homophobic, why would you say something so horrible?
I'm reading Langdon's book "Notes From a Low Singer". This is the only recording of him on UA-cam. At least it's a good one.
@Agorante Thank you for the comment. I thought there were more recording of him on youtube..
Looks like this is Robert Ryan singing Claggart. Not sure what the listing of Langdon is for. But I've read his book and want to hear him, for sure.
Robert Ryan is the actor who played Claggart in the 1962 movie--he's not a singer. It's Langdon's voice on the recording.
Who is the conductor on this recording please? This the most dramatically compelling performance of this aria I have ever heard.
@hospitalship1 Sorry, have only the german version of it, don't know if that is of any help for you.
