- Take a walk down memory lane with Spike TV's "Horsepower" Season 5, Episode 86. Originally airing August 14, 2004, this episode featured none other than Gale Banks. The legendary engine builder and hot rodder joined the team to assemble and fire up one of his infamous small-block twin-turbo kits which were all the rage at the time.
How does Gale today about turbocharging? It's his favorite form of forced induction. However, in our series, BANKS BUILT, he's returned to his first love, supercharging. If you're into big horsepower and finely tuned engines, this series is a must-watch.

A "100 thousand mile" turbo-charger kit - that sums Mr Banks' product philosopy perfectly.
RELIABLE power, not flashy numbers the engine produces a few times before it's headed for the re-cycling bin.
Damn, this dude sounds cool that's what I want to achieve.
I want to build an E46, E92, and a 20B rotary as powerful dailies.
I just want to build the car with the same ethos as an OEM, and I want this old car to trade punches with whatever the OEM is producing to date.
I guess I want to show some of these guys how they've been moving backwards. You can make good power for cheap on an excellent platform for the driver, and for the builder to add more power.
Like where did the NSX go? Why can't they make a mid engined car and drop a Civic K20 engine in to it? It'd be cheap, reliable, platform is excellent for the driver to learn how to drive, platform is excellent for the builder to add more power, and it's nice and balanced, not skimping on suspension and chasis and can handle the extra power without feeling like a death trap. If Honda could just do that for us, I'd have a NSX to match a Fireblade.

That's kinda what these guys did, if you search for NSX on their search engines, and there are others because, as you say, it's a great engine-chassis combination.

"Then I got into diesel" and the rest is history
lost me there. hate diesels almost as much as an electric car
@@Trendyrapslut I definitely hate working on them, but I respect them
@@nox_chan I hate working on modern diesel but love working on old school diesel
Become a Billionaire over night and invent a diesel that DOES NOT SMOKE.
@@powerofone1645 that doesn’t take much
What a great and dramatic shift from the fast-talking airhead hosts to Gale's measured, steady response.
whats crazy is joe elmore still hosts on powernation tv youtube channel.
Gale Banks is a real Engineer.
Man it's been a hot minute since that show has been on.
Still going strong on motortrend
@@regal105 no doubt
Gale looks so young
Sooooooweeeeeee
I seen things similar if not the same growing up I’m 19 now miss things like this surely
Good ole Horsepower TV. I used to wake up on Saturdays and watch it in the late 90’s as a kid
What a legend. I absolutely love hearing Gale's breakdowns on how to make power.
Agreed!
I miss watching this show on Saturday afternoons!
No intercooler? What the hell Gale!
Gale was in his 60's on this episode, and looks not a day over 50. I was thinking Gale was in his late 60's on his current videos, and i found out he's in his 80's! Not only is his information timeless, but the legend himself is as well.
The good old days, power block. The world was almost normal back then.
I remember looking forward to this show Saturday (maybe Sunday) mornings. It’s been about 20 years since I can’t recall but I loved this show. They were so knowledgeable and clean with their work. 👍👍
Someday get Gale to tell you about his ‘67 Chevrolet 1/2-ton panel truck that had a twin-turbo small block in it. The panel was his delivery truck and test sled. His parts driver used to blow off everything in sight with it.
Ah, the White Tortilla. Classic.
I remember this episode like yesterday, and had to watch it again. I never get sick of listening to Gale's plethora of knowledge.
I remember watching that episode when it debuted. Mike Galley was a young pup.
This guy knows his stuff, and can explain it so clearly as well!
Before Spike,, there was Tnn with thier car shows, Shade Tree Mechanics, & then Motor Week on PBS. Those were what I watched on Saturday mornings as a kid instead of cartoons.
imagine doing more for the automotive industry than carrol shelby and being humble about it what a guy
I miss those old episodes reminds of being a kid
They have em on their website pretty good stuff
Gale Banks and Joe Elmore! Legends!!
Awe man! Gale looked so young!
Blast from the past, how young they all look.
Man it would be cool to find one of these on a car like a barn find, I love the old school performance parts!!!
I was thinking the same thing, those exhaust manifolds look so nice he should bring those back
@@silkyjohnson5976 Cheap tubular kits flow better nowadays. Those turbos are hardcore obsolete as well.
@@BeardMan01 I know I can buy cheap headers, they aren't gonna last 100,000 miles though, lol. If there's a back pressure issue it's probably the turbo
@@silkyjohnson5976 Sure they will, if you have everything properly braced. I've currently got an A4 with a fleabay tubular manifold on it that has been there for over 120k. It's the work beater nowadays, but it used to be my friends actual "hot rod". If you can even call an A4 a hot rod, lol.
I could sit and hear Gale Banks talk to me about turbos, blowers, and engines all day and not care.
Love the host’s face as he realizes the true extent of Mr. Banks’ alien wizard supergenius
This show was my first introduction to Banks Power. I always wanted a truck with the full sidewinder package.
Yeah idi 7.3 with a sidewinder package would be sweet imo
Wow trip down memory lane... I remember watching this on the powerblock back in the day
That was great.
9:00 to see engine start
I would definitely buy this kit if Banks decided to make a new and revised turbo kit for vortec 350/305s trucks
This is awesome! Gale is a living legend. I remember seeing the red pickup back in the day (the Sidewinder if I remember correctly) that not only set records, it towed its own trailer to the Flats. Friggin epic. Hahaha
Back when HP tv and Trucks was good. I miss Shade tree mechanic too.
That's incredible! Haven't seen this clip in so long! I think I first read about Banks in a magazine. As to which magazine, I can't recall. I remember being so impressed by Gale's knowledge and humbleness.
Hearing these stories from years back is co cool, thanks for sharing!
@@bankspower 😎🤙🏻
Such a cool guy,excellent show
Damn that’s awesome!! I love it!
-What about an intercooler?
-Where we're going, we dont need an intercooler.
This show started my hp addiction lmao
Never been this early before. Always love ro see Gale
Classic Gale. What a trip.
Awww. Such cute turbos 😂 Super cool setup! The boost valves in the intake are trick!
i love watching them on youtube :)
Honestly I think they'd still be a market for the excellent cast manifolds from this kit.
Or if you'd be willing to sell the pattern's ;)
Maybe even the full kit.
Jordan
My god I feel like I'm 7 years old again and watching this on my uncle's hacked cable
😂
The show that turned me onto WyoTech. Graduated 2006
Shared on Facebook as gear head history.
This episode is nostalgic.
That's very unfortunate, he was great on those shows.
Look at how young mike galley is. Wow this must have been an old, old episode
Edit: 17 years ago, its in the desc
Memories!!!
Look at that young Gale. Still looking good 👍
I need this!
I was a senior when this aired. I feel old
If I wanted to mod my truck I always think of banks first you guys have been in the game longer then the game itself.
Dang, that really takes me back. It didn't look that crappy quality then lol
Legend
Gale Banks and I would get along well, turbos make more power every time. Period. I regret selling my Incon twin turbo'd Foxbody mustang....one of the best running engine setups I ever had.
Time to change your name.
Man the good old Spike TV days
I would work for free if I could follow Gale around for 8 hours a day while he's talking about this stuff.
I can only imagine the carnage when someone bolted that kit to their stock smallblock. No intercooler, 87 octane.
I could not imagine my truck ( f-150 XLT 4.7) with a turbo let alone twin turbos
This Gale guy has great podcast voice
Will always have the banks intake for the Cummins 🙌🏾
I like the 4th gen camaro ss in the background. the one that came with the 5.7L Ls1. I have the same car same color. but it has a turbo ls3. makes about 600hp with the turbo.
where is the post compression cooling?
So that's a Crate Engine? Out of the box ready to go, just install it? Niiiiice.
Ohh the good old powerblock days......
Yes indeed!
I would love to run a TwinTurbo Banks small block
Wonder if anyone still runs one of these.
❤ Gale Banks, how does this system get its intercooler effect in2 the plenum or engine. Would this particular system work in a marine setting . Could u add a water methanol injection system 2 it
How much Boost r u running on this Engine.
How does the Air from turbos cool down?
225👍's up MR POWER thank for sharing
No doubt, Gale is a great guy, businessman and competitor at Bonneville......
wow didnt even have mirrored turbos back then
waste gate controls the amount of exhaust that will spin the turbos, not necessarily the amount of boost.
Gale Banks is a legend. What l dont get 4 this kit is where is the intercooler. . Could a whipple cupronickle be fitted up in the large plenum . Now this was a 355 cu inch motor . Would this kit work on a 427 cu inch motor .
Hard not to admire this guy.
‘Twas a good day
Anyone know what.happened.to Mike? Does he have a yt channel?
I'm interested in the number with and without an intercooler.
I'm curious if you ever adapted that style of manifold to an LS and sold it to the public.
Is this kit still available
It is no longer available.
I was hoping for Ian and Jessie and the Suburban Gorilla.
❤️
#7👍🏻!! 💪🏻
Holy crap you know this show is old because Gail Banks is not using an intercooler
Manifold air density !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Twin turbo small block making 600 LOL that's a naturally aspirated small block now
Also it appears the turbos are only oil cooled ! They should have water lines plumbed in as well to help manage temperatures.
can tell bob has gotten old. watching him in 2004 and then now.
And now vipers can put down 3,000 rear wheel horse power with twin snails.
Why no Turbo Kits for TODAYS engine, the LS/LT small blocks????
Gale looks the same now. Is he Peter Pan ?
I am not a fighter, but if you do not like Gale Banks for what he has done and does for the Hot Rodder.. I'll Fight you :-)
He is a real cool guy & done it all.
Where’s the inter cooler?
I wonder if his 1000hp models had been intercooled?
It’s this turbo kit still available?
It was discontinued a few years ago.
Poor Joe looks like he has no clue what Gale is even talking about. He just keeps nodding along like “duhhhhhrrrrrr.” Clueless!!
Wow, Gale looks fitter today than he did back then. Always built quality stuff.
on top gear they used a v 8 engine to power a food blender
My 89 7.3 f250 has a banks turbo kit on it 😬 it still gives me a chubby all these years later..
👍
ah yes, Joe "cam bearings' Elmore. In all seriousness, that is a cool kit, never saw that before. I seriously doubt they still make it though, damn shame.
lol why the nickname
Wow he definitely looks different now
