Love soft jaws. Not just for round work either. Got a pallet of castings with nothing to chuck to? Butcher, weld to, whatever a set of chewed up soft jaws, turn, bore, or mill registrations, clamping features, etc and go to town. Three jaw on the lathe also works on on the table of a mill, HBM, VBM, whatever. Add soft jaws and screw a buncha $100K modular set-up kits. Keep it simple, secure, and repeatable.
That's crazy. Do you charge more to "fix it"? Or to "make it right"? I'm guessing the hole work was not done in your shop .... You must see all kinds of parts out of tolerance .... good recovery. Pretty clever making the new chuck.
@@ChrisMaj Yea, I saw that and as I was writing my comment I couldn't recall whether I saw "that's how we got it" or "that's how I got it" .... great recovery.

The supplier F-up, but I'm still working on a job. "The customer supplied the material." I don't think I've ever wasted so much material. I might have a video in a couple of weeks.
I often wondered when shooting these types of video how often do you need to change the lens cover or camera case? All them heavy chips must knock the camera around a lot. Just out of interest how many bins of swarf did you fill on the project?
It's a cnc lathe. You just get an alarm if you crash (not that I've ever done it 😉) or if I push it to hard, I'll get an alarm ,Spindle motor overheated.
You should have programmed it with a zig zag cycle. Use the left and right side of the tip, and you stay on the job. Know rapid back to the start. Easy cycle on Fanuc
How do you run an NC program on a part like that? You gotta chuck up a big slug, and wind up with a finished piece.....and if you've got a dimension that's off, you have to put an offset in for that tool and run it again, right? How do you avoid scrapping parts that are out of tolerance....?
It almost seemed like there was something a little off about the material while you were roughing beyond the wonky saw cuts, the tool that was roughing the center V seemed to have consistent load but the sound was changing, then during finishing it seemed like the surface was rougher on one side than the other. Did you notice that while you were cutting?
Just for a weight saving, but flame hardening has a tendency to distort, so I left as much material as I could. As you can see, the finished part has a really thin wall.

That's some pretty impressive MMR and jaw design there sir. Masterfully done as always and thanks for posting.
Yeah, 8100 LBS (3670 kg) in the bucket .😅
First time I’ve seen soft jaws done like that. Really nifty idea. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, it worked out pretty well.
Coming from the mill world and getting thrown into learning lathes very interesting seeing what is possible when roughing. Thank you for sharing
I was amazed at the adaptation of the lathe jaws. I am going to try to replicate this for my wood lathe as I have many oddball pieces to chuck.
Nice work!! You are a real inspiration. Greetings from Sweden 💪🏼💪🏼

Как всегда отличная работа. Спасибо за видео.
Great video, from the finished component you wouldn't realise that the material was way out great job.
That was the point 😉
Great recovery, excellent job, Chris.👍
Работает профессионал. Моё почтение.
Это было шикарно и просто красиво. Успехов.
Подача сотка. Это конечно мощно. Ниразу не точил на такой подаче.
Man this lathe eats. It has a very impressive material removal rate

Thank you for showing the times for the different steps. I assume the flame hardening is done at a different location.?.
Yeah, we send things out for flame hardening.
Very pretty

Chris, how many days went into finishing all those units? Beautiful work, as always, by the way.
Almost two weeks, 27 pieces

Love the final finish, do you get a say in customer supplied product?
No, not really. I'm just trying to work with what I have

The only thing I use is my phone. I don't really have time to play around with cameras. Around 3670 kg went down the drain.
wow
Wow! I bet you saw those when you sleep. How many weeks did that job take?
Almost two weeks. I'm more of a one-off guy.
@@ChrisMaj I don't mind short runs, but much smaller parts lol. Thanks for the video Chris.
The prep on the blanks was bad, but was it at least consistent?
Some of them were ok, and some were worse than the one in the video.
Random question
Have you ever stalled that lathe?
It's a cnc lathe. You just get an alarm if you crash (not that I've ever done it 😉) or if I push it to hard, I'll get an alarm ,Spindle motor overheated.
@@ChrisMaj Ah yeah that makes sense. Manual machines don't have alarms and errors so I didn't think of that.

Did you run all that with no coolant? That’s damn impressive if so blue chips look really nice!
That's somewhat production like machining.
I know, definitely not my thing.
SNAFU 😶Someone smart 🤓thought: hey buddy, let me save you a ton of time and screw up this hole before you start.
Exactly
@1:58 I know part blanks don't have to be perfect, but damn! 😆
If they left more stock on the inside, it would have been fine.

Yeah, all hand programed with fanuc manual guide
Nie było by bezpieczniej zrobić te szczęki z całego materiału?
Bezpieczniej, tak. Szybciej chyba nie. 😅

Can you please share what was rev limit with jaws that you made? I'm really interested what kind of speeds are possible with setup like that
I think the max was 450rpm. Don't forget I have 20" chuck in 32" chuck, and this lathe maxes out at 630 rpm
Is there a reason that so much material was removed from the ends after hardening?
Just for a weight saving, but flame hardening has a tendency to distort, so I left as much material as I could. As you can see, the finished part has a really thin wall.
