Turning Large Steel Tube into Hydraulic Cylinder Barrel | Machining & Welding
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- This video is of a job we did start to finish to machine up a hydraulic cylinder barrel for a CAT 631 wheel tractor scraper Apron lift cylinder. We started with the old cylinder barrel and machined out the welds to remove the barrel end and head flange. Heated barrel with flame torch to expand and remove ends. Head flange needed to be bored out, built up with weld and then machined out to suit new barrel tube. Lots of machining to outer diameter of new barrel tube to match OEM standard and interference fit for head flange. Drilled oil ports into new barrel, heated head flange for expansion and fitted to new machined barrel. Then MIG welded barrel ends onto new barrel to finish.

I’m so glad you got rid of the music in your later videos.
There must be an award or some recognition for the high quality camera work! - it's why I stay glued.
I worked as field service tech at an industrial hydraulic shop for 8 years. I pulled the leaking ,bent, cracked, split, blown up or what ever else a customer could manage to do a cylinder to the shop. Our cylinder techs, machinists and welders did amazing work cutting heads and tails off bad tubes and even machining new heads pistons and glands. I see some very expert work being dong in this video.
I'm amazed at how far you have progressed. Karen has trained you well.
I’m not a machinist, but watching this makes me want to be one...even at age 62! So cool!
Thanks for watching mate 😎👍
Your local Community college should have machinist classes if you live in the United States? It has a lot of Mathematics. Try a few courses and see if you like it? Take mig welding and Tig while there...
I was a machinist and welder before I joined the United States Navy... I was 22 and couldn’t get some thing out of my system so I went for it. I was hurt while serving. The Anthrax vaccine for the First Gulf War has caused my SI joints and spine to fuse. This has left me permanently disabled...
@@nomerc3608 sorry to hear that man, that's horrible. Thanks very much for your service.
Yes indeed...im into construction but if it has anything to do with tools i love watching and learning.
This took me back years and years back. I could almost smell the metal, hear the healthy sound of the sharp tungsten carbide throw away tip slicing through the metal at the correct speed and correct feed. Amazing, thank you. 😊👍
Hey mate welcome to the channel thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it! 😎👍
I love machining, welding, and fabrication. I've never worked on anything with such large components. Awesome to watch.
Thanks for watching
Just look at how much better your videos have gotten!!!!!
My 1st video I just happened upon seeing CEE AND metal machining was the one showing all the stuff y'all found in that one large lathe.
Seen all your stuff since then... And I seen so much, I feel I could Indicate and set up a cylinder (did I spell that right ?) with a steady-rest... Aaaaand...probably even measure the cuts, speed and depths and threads (which will take me 12 to 48 hours find all the right settings) and another week to figure òut the half-nut Spelunking.
WHEW?! THANKS FOR THE SHOW.
These guys are so skillful it’s relaxing to just have a watch and let it all unfold.
6:05- love how the forklift driver runs over those torch hoses.
I made him pay for it. By him, I mean me HAH
Very interesting & the safety officer / supervisor really keeps a sharp eye on the work
Hey Gary cheers mate thanks for watching
Cutting Edge Engineering Australia thanks for showing us the work because it’s interesting
Your work ethic is second to none young man .thanks .
I love watching your videos 👀, the amazing work being done is quite mesmerizing. I'm so glad I came across this channel.
Today, i have to do a 4 in diameter, .25in wall 2inch long barrel. So here i am to see how it's done. it's for slamming the thing for the coffee puck to come off. Besides the espresso machine. In the kitchen. Thank you very much for all these videos. From Canada. In winter.
I agree with Rich H 😉I (59) Came back from the future to watch the stuff I hadn't seen .
Almost all caught up now . All good but I do like the longer more descriptive vids you do now .
Carl is a natural spokesman 😄 Picked up a Safety Officer shirt from the merch .
Great work Karen and Kurtis and Homey , I wish you Great success and hope Kurtis can get
more days off and less hours (if wanted) due To that success.
Very skilled machinist working magic on old parts. Just subscribed to see more of this talent in action. Thanks for sharing.
Hey mate thanks appreciate it. Cheers, Kurtis 😎👍
Wow I have done about 10 or 15 cat apron cylinders So cool I got some tricks lol
You did a great Job. I have been a machinist for 39
years rebuilding hydric cylinders in Canada Alberta
Done a lot of this in 72 yrs , glad to see it’s goin on
You`ve done that before - lol, great work, I sat watching enthralled from start to finish. most my working life was called a "Turner" but at 50 years of age took extra inhouse training to work a 5 axis machining centre, but ended up working any type of machine in my shop If my night shift worksheet told me too. . Strange German T lathes that ran backwards, VTL lathes, small CNC lathes but preferred to do big stuff.. work abruptly stopped in March 2003 when the company went Insolvent, so, I took the brave decision to retire at 55 and moved to the coast.. Loved your video though, and the singing, and as I worked night shift only, being in a lonely part of the factory, I often burst Into song, more to keep me awake than anything.. Thank you - Ian - UK.
Hey Ian thanks very much for watching and taking time to share some of your history! Maybe we can do a duet some day hahaha. I like to sing cause no one's around and I think I sound amazing. Cheers, Kurtis 😎👍
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering whatever you do, making stuff, your doing it with pride and that my friend will make you sing as your happy..keep the videos coming, i too get bored - still - lol - ian.
That is such a neat trick to finally remove the end of that cylinder Kurtis! I had been wondering how that final bit was going to be cut, I did not see heating it up coming at all.
Ingenious way of parting the top off the cylinder
Brilliant. Even my wife is interested in your work.
Very professional work here Kurtis ,well done
I like watching your videos and the raw sound of the workshop, welding, grinding, sawing, whatever.
Awesome! There will always be a place for manual machining.
Приятно смотреть на работу профессионала, молодец мужик. Пёс красавчик)))
Nice spindle bore! I stumbled across this video quite by accident. I saw it in the side bar and said oohhh.... this looks interesting! I am glad I clicked on it. Very nice work.
I perform portable line boring, light machine work and welding for work and this kind of repair work is right up my ally. I also found your instagram too and subscribed. looking forward to more repair work. Cheers
Hey Warren welcome to the channel thanks for watching and subscribing hope you can get some enjoyment or education from it all! Cheers, Kurtis 😎👍
My God I could watch this kind of work all day, excellent content.
Thanks for watching glad you enjoy it 😎👍
Heyoo, you guys are fun to watch. I did this kind of work for the Kaiser hot strip in San Bernadino, the big jobs are the big quid! So relaxing
So only one robot to do the welding, great stuff, yet again.
Excellent Job !!! Those are some beautiful welds.
Cheers 😎👍
Hey Kurtis, if you look in the mirror you will see the only guy you can trust to give 100% every Day and The only guy That Will Show up for Work even if he has a Headache!. My wife told me that i expected to much from people when i was on a job with a new guy and after he screwed up he said "is ok the Client wont see it" i was like "YOUR FIRED". Totally unacceptable.
Have a great Day!! Nice Work Mate!
its so nice watching guys work that know what there doing. nice piece.
Hey Robert thanks for watching & the comment appreciate it!
Kurtis has a good singing voice!
Amazing craftsmanship. Proper machining and fabrication works.
Hey thanks very much! 😎👍
You are in the real world. No guard on the grinder, no nanny the safety goat wringing her hands over the lack of safety procedures being followed. I love that you operate in the real world. I enjoyed the video. Thanks.
Great job again!!👍💪👌
I was a bit worried about the orientation of the two cast parts in relation to each other, but I am sure the customer was happy with the end result!
Hi man, just wanted to say
The 4 jaw Chuck in the tail stock is a genius idea.
The videos are awesome!!!!!!
Hey mate welcome to the channel thanks for watching! 😎👍
It's so satisfying to watch this guy at work... His work is just magnificent 🙂... You inspire me Bro...
This ASMR for someone with an engineering mind. With or without music.
Your skills are phenomenal. Hat off to you sir.
A lot of wire went into those welds. Truly a precessional job. I have subscribed.
Hey mate welcome to the channel!
Fun and interesting to watch but very impressed with the production guys, quite professional.
Some nice big jobs you undertake 👍👍
i know who to ask, for educational videos. 👍 👍 👍 not one been boring until now.
Saw your boss there again - - keeping an eye out for you incase you get your paw in wrong place. Great job on the cylinder turn. Did some machining with Civil Service for U.S. Coast Guard. You are 10 times larger than I ever did. What's the old saying - "Keep On Turning!" Have a day down there.
I need to stop watching these after work, makes me want to go back 👍
Haha sorry not sorry 🤷♂️ also please keep watching 😂
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering that's the plan 😁
Excellent work. I had not seen this video until today.
love how at 2:18 he tightens the hold down to the beat of the song
I REALLY REALLY LOVE WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS KEEP THEM COMING.
I'm curious what the zig-zag welding around the 5:30 mark was about. At first I thought you were welding something to it to allow you to press the fixture off the end, but it seems like you didn't attach anything to it. Where you just welding on it to put heat into it? Wouldn't that just make it harder to pull apart since the barrel would expand before the fixture and wedge them together?
I use to work with a tiny lathe maching hydraulic fittings, i lo e watching this, makes me want to buy a lathe even though ive no use for one
Hey mate thanks for watching. You should go for it, just to increase your coolness factor with your friends 🤣😎👍
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering 🤣🤣
Yay 😃. Finally an Aussie machining shop on UA-cam. (Well one that I haven’t had to search for)
Keep it going mate. Just subbed.

Hey mate welcome to the channel and thanks for subscribing. You must be just up the road from us! 😎👍
Superb job and high skill work 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching 😎👍
great to see this type of work. personally i could really do without the generic music, prefer raw workshop sounds.
Thanks for watching and the feedback
The music is motivational
He really takes it.... Wow
@@obviouslytwo4u lol, how much motivation do you need to sit on your arse and watch someone else work?
music is always annoying
Love to see y'all do your thing..Very interesting work ,I'm an ole welder but i love to see the new toy's that's out there now.. Nice video young lady... I love your Pit Bull , well trained... See Ya
Great video well shot , really enjoyed it, good to see the job start to finish.
Lathe work and welding I'm in ! .
Hey mate welcome to the channel thanks for watching and supporting!
wow what a process
wow, this is so great to watch , good vidio guys thanks for showing how machining is done .
Hey Paul welcome to the channel thanks for watching and the comment! Cheers, Kurtis 😎👍
I think we bought our oil ‘cans’ from the same factory! One I bought was made from a baked bean can turned inside out. Came from India I reckon. !! Very neat the tail stock chuck.👍🇬🇧🇦🇺😁🦘
Well done, great job as always. Regards from Germany
Hey mate thanks appreciate it 😎👍
see the boss was watching no welding goggles though, great show guys just came across it .
Hey mate welcome to the channel! Yeah he's the safety officer and doesn't have proper PPE go figure! 😂 Cheers, Kurtis 😎👍
Great video and I think if you went to an Abom79 style with first person commentary explaining what you doing, RPM, feed rate, insert selection etc rather than the music you would have a hit channel on your hands. Great work. Steve, Sydney Oz.
Hey mate welcome to the channel thanks for watching and your feedback. To be honest I don't have time to stand there and talk all day i'm running a 1 man business. My misses does the editing and is trying to add more subtitle info in all the newer videos. Cheers, Kurtis 😎👍
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering No worries mate I get it, maybe if you recorded a dialogue and then have your wife overlay it? in any case great stuff to watch.
I may be in the minority here but I consider the absence of chatter a godsend. Too many people can't talk and work at the same time. So it ends up being talk. D'oh!
Awesome machinery and awesome work sir..🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰
Thanks again! 😎👍
Fun to watch👍👍👍👍👍nice job👍👍👍👍
Man i miss workin on a lathe lol. Nice work. Been watchin your channel for a while now.
Thank you for sharing you three.
perfect job, greetings from germany
Hey Peter thanks for watching mate 😎👍
Great job, good job, see you all
Very Nice Job!
Thanks mate!
I’m happy with the way the videos have progressed, not all background music and with some talking about what is happening. We could probably use a little more Kurtis singing here and there though! 😂
Hi, freaking job : many operations to end with an almost new part. Amazing vid, especially interesting to whom like metal machining👌👍🖖
Hey mate thanks for watching and commenting!
congratulations, great job. Although welding on the lathe without covering the bed I do not think it is right.
Hey mate thanks for watching understand your concern. The lathe beds are sprayed with antispatter and Inox we've never had a drama
That explains everything, great trick I will keep in mind. many successes
I welded bronze overlay on cast iron pistons. Then the machinist would cut seal groves sometimes the my welds had low spots or crap that made a hole. I hatted having to drag the welder all the way to the lathe then having to cover the bed and controls to protect them They teased me and told me that was my punishment for the bad weld.
Very nice welding.
Thanks very much
very good job
Thanks for watching!
Nice work
use to shrink boiler tubes for removal with weld bead and drive them out
Great job guys.
Thanks Charles!
I like the rotating earth clamp @18:16
😂 thanks for watching!
Excellent work
Thanks for watching!
Done many of these there a good job to do
Good stuff mate thanks for watching
We have a bunch of extruders that are used for rubber where I work. The coolant liner on one has deformed and is now bulging an extra 10mm in certain spots around the length of of the extruded. Had to pull the screw out and send the extruded barrel out to get the liner bored out and resleeved along with repairing the bulging sections of the coolant/heating jacket. The task is arduous at best.
Man I bet that happened on a Friday too right!?
I am a retired carpenter, spent almost 40 years in the residential end of things. If I had it over to do again I think being a general machinist would have equally gratifying.. Great video of the whole process. A very labour intensive repair. What is one of those cylinders worth off of the shelf? Greetings from Canada.
Legal os trabalhos de vcs. Muito fascinado por máquinas
At 3:00, nice Canadian content with Sam Roberts - Bridge to Nowhere. Cool video as well.
Hey Kevin thanks for watching mate haha
Whoa! Scary stuff reaching your arm out next to a spinning lathe. Stay safe out there!
There’s always a “ safety Sally “ . He knows what he’s doing .
@@Gus1966-c9o forgive me if I find a giant lathe that can extrude you into human lasagna if you get caught in it something to be treated with a healthy deal of respect 🤔
brother! when do you sleep? As I understand it, the operator, your wife. You are super!Forgive me for my English-I don't know it. I understand from the video! I haven't seen this in 20 years! very good. the beard and mustache look good on you!
I was supposed to watch just the beginning but I ended up watching the whole video👍
Cheers mate thanks for watching! 😎👍
Loving this channel!!!!
Cool job, you are a professional.
Cheers appreciate it 😎👍
Давно подписан на него делает все на высшем уровне респект!!!!!
Totally genius how he cut the end off
Great videos and you keep making them the way you want. Music and all
This was really fun to watch. I'll bet most people have no idea the amount of skill it takes to make things look this good. One thing that I would be curious to know: about how much does this cost? If I went down the the Big-Ass Truck Store and had a broken Big-Ass tube-part from a KoTerDooHymatsuchivopillardeecase BA3, what would a new one cost, and what does a refurb/remanufacture cost? I know that stuff is not the price of a car, but just for peanuts and popcorn, what kind of money does this stuff run? Since I never have, and never will, have anything to do with this type of equipment, I just have NO idea the prices these items cost.
Just wondering. Peanut Gallery, please feel free to chime in with your prices, but please include what part of the World you're from, so we know where is what.
And thanks to all the guys that keep our mechanical world spinning! You ARE appreciated, even if we forget to say it.
Good job my friend, i like this work and i work whit it here at Brazil, congratulations
Awesome thanks for watching and commenting 😎👍
So after yall re machine the new diameter for the new piece of material and weld it back on it gets the chrome plating?
Hey mate cylinder barrels don't get chrome plated, the internal diameter gets finish honed and polished.
Great job mate. Keep the videos coming
Hi Mathan thanks for the comment! Got some big jobs about to start so more video's to come 😎👍 Cheers Kurtis
Well Done guys amazing job!
Thanks very much appreciate it!
this might be a very long process. very talented
