      Yes, I had to change the front gearing on my Catrike 700 because it came with only a 30 tooth small ring, which was too large to get up the hills. Once I exchanged it to a 24, it was great! Read about my 700 at this link if interested:

      not a problem! I have a question. I recently changed my 30 t for a 24 t chainring and love it! The 30 is way too high for climbs loaded. My question is do you have your chan set to engage the big big even though you would obviously never use that? I am just trying to figure if I should shorten my chain so it does not make that combination to give ti the right length for the small large rear combo. I have a 2013 catrike 700 with in the rear cog.

    • @EZSteve
      @EZSteve  10 років тому

      abstracttony
      Hey there Tony,
      On my former ICE Qnt, I did shorten my chain enough that it was not able to engage the "big big" combination, because yes, that is never necessary or used. I did so to save some weight. On this Catrike 700, I have not done that. Due to the trike's light weight, I just didn't feel any need to go to the trouble. It's not a bad idea though, and if you want to, I'd say go ahead and do yours that way. When I did it on my ICE trike, it was never a thing that I was even aware of after that because I never used that combination. You have a good point that shortening the chain does make the small 24t a better setup - good thinking! I sure love the 24 on my 700 - great choice. Yes, that 30 that comes stock was not suited at all for anyone other than folks who ride only on flat ground all the time - never could figure out what manufacturers are thinking with only a 30 as a small ring, especially on the ICE Adventure, which is made to tackle backroads, but they have a 30-39-52 combo up front: 30 is WAY too large for dirt road inclines, and 52 is usually unecessary for an adventure off-road oriented trike! A 52 is perfect for a road machine, but road machines are used to climb hills that require a 24 from time to time (for folks who live where there are geological anomalies called mountains ;-)

      I will say this. I love the 24 t up front. I have the 36 in rear on the 2013 700. There is a company making a 40 t and a 42 t rear cog that I would not mind having to get that gear sick low. I think it is called wolf teeth or something. You add that 42 cog after the 36 but remove the 15 or 17th t cog and space in doing so. It is intriguing to me. Next thing I want to get is the granny guard. I paint as in artist for living, well try, I use the burley nomad with rack towed to take work out in park etc to paint. I want my low as low as possible. Not too many monster hills here but still nice to have with a load as you are full aware. I try telling people with a trike having a low gear is essential and you can really utilize extreme lows far better on a trike platform then any bike platform due to not having balance issues. Who cares if you go 1.5 mph up a steep hill with a load a long as there is less peddle pressure I am for it!

    • @EZSteve
      @EZSteve  10 років тому

      abstracttony The 24 is critical. The Volae Granny Guard by Hostel Shoppe is an absolute must. I had it on my recent coastal trip on the 700, and never does the chain overshift onto the inside anymore! Totally worry-free with the guard! I recommend it to everyone! Best $35 you can spend - saves you a lot of headache putting your chain back on the small ring, plus, you don't have to baby the shift - just shift with total abandon and the chain does what you want!
      People can keep those larger small rings that come from all the factories, and eventually, they'll have knee issues. Sure, I can get up a hill with a 30 tooth small ring by mashing the pedals, but it's no fun at all, and my body will pay the price with injury. It will also stress the chain and trike much more than using a 24 ring. Keep on giving that advice to people Tony - it's right on!

    how fast can a trike go

    • @EZSteve
      @EZSteve  7 років тому

      There are many types of recumbent trikes. Some are extremely fast, while others are relatively slow. I have pedaled a Catrike 700 on flat ground up to 37 miles per hour. Coming down a steep mountain pass, I have reached speeds in excess of 50 miles per hour, probably close to 60. Some trikes are designed to safely go this fast, while others would be highly dangerous at these speeds. A trike's speed potential is also linked with the fitness and strength level of the rider. The stronger and fitter a person is, the faster they can go (on level ground, for example). Downhill is a matter of gravity and total traveling weight of the trike and rider.

    • @jamesmason2291
      @jamesmason2291 7 років тому

      37 mph faster then I was thinking

    • @andy-the-gardener
      @andy-the-gardener 7 років тому

      Trike Hobo impressive. But are you as fast on a road bike. You might just be exceptionally powerful.
      What i want to know is can a ordinary level rider on a catrike 700 keep up with ordinary level road bikers or even best them. Ive read they are slower due to poorer aerodynamics. But i dont reckon even superman roadies doing 37mph on the flat. I have trouble getting much past 20 mph for anything more than bursts if the flat road isnt really optimal, ie smooth road, tail wind

      As fast as you can pedal it. I just started riding a trike, the rolling resistance really isn’t that that much different from a regular bike. The draw back is climbing hills, because you can’t get up and stand on the pedals, other than that, I can ride a trike just as fast as my bikes, only no joint pain on the trike.
