Indian Jamaicans have been in Jamaica since the 1850’s. We came as indentured workers along with the Chinese after slavery. We are not culturally separate or live apart from the general population of Jamaica . We are Jamaican, out of many one people. We are mixed families and live wherever we choose to. There are no Indian villages or towns there is no master chef delegating that curry must only be made in the way it was made 170 years ago!!! We are a nation evolving and changing and so does our food our likes and dislikes. Overtime curry is also mixed with the many spice relevant to the general population of Jamaica for example thyme instead of cilantro, pimento or (allspice berries) added. The base of Jamaican curry is turmeric, coriander seeds and cumin, salt and pepper every thing else is left to the cook👨🏾🍳!!! Curry has become a true ❤️of🇯🇲 Yes there are a variety of ways and styles of cooking Jamaican 🇯🇲curry . There is no Indian community living separate and apart from the rest of Jamaica . @@mushymoshy Thank you for reminding others that we are "Out of many, one people'". Our foods reflect our very eclectic mix. We love foods representing our African, European, Indian, Chinese, Lebanese etc. heritage and blend them with our own peculiar Jamaican flair. My own DNA is a blend of many African, European and Indian peoples and I am so proud to carry their blood .
@@mushymoshy, totally agree. In the other islands, curry would only be associated with the Indian population. However, for Jamaicans, curry is embraced and owned by the entire population. There is no one-upmanship as to which group owns a cuisine. Indians cook African foods and infuse Indian culture into it. Africans cook African cuisine and infuse Indian spices. Whites do the same. Chinese do the same. Middle Eastern do the same, and the other groups do the same. We all claim a Jamaican identity despite our unique cultures. Good food knows no boundaries.
