This video inspired me to start an xj overland build 3 years ago taking it on its mayden voyage today for a 4 day trip to near stone mountain. Had to pay respects to this man and his amazing build once more just to say thanks.
Congratulations. How did the road trip go. I just bought a 1990 xj that I think I’m gonna name Rusty. My plans is to do an overland build and this dude just gave me tons of ideas. I can’t wait to take my maiden voyage with her
Hopefully I get the rest of my parts installed this week and take mine for an alignment. Then it's time to test it out. UA-cam cost me a bunch of money so far and I'm just getting started lol
@@matthewpalsgrove2090 year old comment but brother you hit the nail on the head. XJs are just now getting the love they deserve. Full resto-mod 4x4 camping rigs are my jam, not this hacked to hell crap we see people doing all too often.
I’ve seen lots of builds on UA-cam and in person and I’d say this is one of the more practical and thoughtful builds yet. Just enough and not too much. I love the way you kept the original character of the Jeep virtually intact. Such a classic vehicle who’s style will never fade. Great job.
Buddy, Thanks for everything. I’m a Moderator on the Facebook group “XJ Preservation Society.” Your build has inspired a lot of people with similar goals. I own a ‘99 and just shook hands on a ‘96 last night. Thanks again.
I admire the honest simplicity of the build, it's great that instead of decking it out with light bars, grill guards and alloy rims he paid attention to what really mattered. better cooling, gearing, axle lockers and it's also great that it has the manual transmission which is somewhat rare of an XJ. Just the necessities instead of luxuries. I love it.
Really thoughtful and well-done build! Really takes care of everything and in such a perfect package. That RV shower box is a really standout addition.
My first car was a 89’ Cherokee limited. Now I have a 2001 Xj 3.5in lifted. Never got stuck, but pulled lots of huge pickups out.. they are just so fun to drive. They’re as skinny on the trail as an ATV, but has 4wd and mine has 18’ clearance. It’s a torque off-road beast!
Incredible build. Definitely one of the most practical XJ builds I've ever seen and I have a lot of respect for the amount of time it must have taken to do all this plus the ingenuity for all the custom additions like the extra battery, shower, freezer, ect. and it all looks so cleanly done. Truly professional work.
That's actually what I was hoping to find out. I'm hopefully getting one for 500 bucks here in the day or two and was curious how much you had in yours at the point of this video.
Yea the tent and tarp system pushes it over the 10k limit..... but still... this is the second time I have seen a vid on this one and I still like it. Good Job man.
I have 94 also and have a rock crawler mod done to it. I love the unit. i go up to the Rockies and across country to Iowa and Wisconsin. Thank you for the inspiration. You have a great 94.
Wow!! Awesome build and great video!! The XJ is certainly one of the best products from Ma MOPAR in a LOOOOONG time!! Wish they still built this model today!!
The ideas here are great, as a Jeep owner for the last 23 years, I can appreciate the custom work that can be done to XJ, WK, and ZJ Jeeps which are very cheap to buy in the UK and maintain if you pick the right ones that have not been abused too much. I run a WK 5.7 HEMI on LPG which gives me the same running costs as a small car.
I also got a snorkel as accident insurance. I was wheeling just after I finished rebuilding my stroker out on the coast of NC and found out that the 10ft puddle I went into was actually a small lake. I dropped in up to the top of the hood and sucked in water. Scary stuff. I think the only thing you're missing is a chandelier hanging from the tailgate when it's opened. Awesome build. I am subscribed.
The best part of this is that the drawer fridge cost more than the original purchase of the Jeep itself! Obviously tons of upgrades that make this an incredible vehicle.
Wow man that is about the best Cherokee ever and one of my favourite overland builds I've ever seen! You've done a terrific job on this build. Congratulations and thank you for sharing this!
Just bought my XJ and hope to make it an overland rig. Thank you for your thorough walk-through! I can't wait to get started. This is practical and not too over-the-top. Subscribed!
Very nice build up ! I have had 5 XJ;s, but went with a ford van for a full time live in, overland, tour the country vehicle, after 1 trip around it will get a 4x4 conversion. It was a hard decision between the Cherokee and the Ford van but I needed more room to live in. You have a very well thought out home build, not just a spend money buying from a catalog build.
Update December '24. ... I bought a 96 Jeep Cherokee 2 door 5 speed manual transmission. Old Man Emu 3"+ lift, unibody stiffeners front to rear bumpers, plus more mods. Fitting it out for overlanding and trail running, solar, fridge, bed, etc. I'll use the transmission cooler in the radiator to heat water for showers etc. I'll be running the Rubicon, Moab and Alpine Loop etc next spring. Happy Trails y'all !
Only thing else I would add is just medical kit. But I'm sure that's what that red bag was on the passenger seat. And a firearm. Everyone has a family and nice vehicles out there best be ready for the unexpected and safe. Good luck out there brother and excellent overview!
Awesome setup, I am planning on converting my stock 96 Grand Cherokee to an Overland build after my retirement. You definitely gave me some great ideas. Thanks for sharing!
I have a 2018 Jeep Cherokee and i would love to do something like this to it. This gave me lots of ideas that i could use parts from my old camper that was wracked by a tree last year to build something for my jeep. Thanks.
Awesome set up! I like how you put another fridge right up in between the front seats! Thats awesome, if my bed system was not in the way already then Id consider doing that too. The more storage and the more you can chill stuff the better!
That looks like a really fun camping/adventure rig! You might want to double check your fuel mileage so you can estimate range accurately. If you went from a 4.11 gear ratio from a 3.07, that's overcompensating for the difference between the stock 27.7" tire to the 31". Without a speedo gear correction, your speed/mileage will read about 19.6% higher than it actually is. Dividing 19mpg by 1.196 gives about 16 mpg which is pretty normal for 4.0 XJ's.
I like that awning! I am in the middle of a 99 XJ build, mostly for wheeling and hunting. I’m not planning on building it for overlanding (yet), but I do like the awning for trial side cooking and whatnot.
subbed I got you on Instagram to I enjoy your simplistic build style does the job and no more than what you need off-road wise unlike alot of other xj builds that I see on youtube🖒
Excellent work! Thank you for taking to time to share your project with us. I have a 1998 Grand Cherokee 5.9 that Im wanting to build. Thanks again for the info. Its very helpful!

It's awesome to see an XJ getting some good love and not just beat to shit.
Thank you Zach!!
thank you too... its functional and not torn to all hell. jesus thank you

Thank you Carlos, that means a lot! :)
I miss my red one.. 😭
Buddy,
Thanks for everything. I’m a Moderator on the Facebook group “XJ Preservation Society.” Your build has inspired a lot of people with similar goals.
I own a ‘99 and just shook hands on a ‘96 last night. Thanks again.
This is my absolute dream build. Holy wow is it gorgeous. Well done.
videos like this inspire me to build my 1994 YJ into at least a light overland vehicle
You sir are a big part of the reason i decided an xj will be my first 4x4
I admire the honest simplicity of the build, it's great that instead of decking it out with light bars, grill guards and alloy rims he paid attention to what really mattered. better cooling, gearing, axle lockers and it's also great that it has the manual transmission which is somewhat rare of an XJ. Very nice Jeep, well done concept
Very nice build! And the coolest part, 'built, not bought'!
This is a great build. Not these overpriced under utilized build we see these days.
Adam! Thank you for your help today. My son Harper and I love the store and the XL storage bag. Hop to catch you soon at an event.
Really thoughtful and well-done build! Really takes care of everything and in such a perfect package. That RV shower box is a really standout addition.
This is incredible! First overlanding video I’ve seen and this is just absolutely amazing!!!!!
Best I’ve ever seen! Most thoughtful! The James Bond of overlanding!!

Thank you so much Joseph!!
Awesome build. I will use some of those ideas on my XJ. Thanks
that trailer ball swingaway is genius!
Smart build nothing not needed and nothing over kill, and anyone could copy this build for less that 10k
I don't know about less than $10K. I've got a bit more into it than that, at this point!
Overland History What did you do in terms of trimming the body to fit the 31 x 10.5 tires?
Definitely less than 10k. Gotta do it all yourself.
I have 94 also and have a rock crawler mod done to it. I love the unit. i go up to the Rockies and across country to Iowa and Wisconsin. Thank you for the inspiration. You have a great 94.
This looks very cool and nice
Awesome job, smart build in little place, really Nice work! please more vids off your builds. Have a nice day from France
Right on.. just beginning to transform my 99 jeep cherokee classic into an overland dream ..
Wow!! Awesome build and great video!! The XJ is certainly one of the best products from Ma MOPAR in a LOOOOONG time!! Wish they still built this model today!!
Awesome, gave me some gr8 ideas for my 2000 XJ 2 door. Thank you.
Folks like you make a person shout "God bless America"! Fantastic.
Lol, thank you Randy!! :D

Wayne Sanders Oh wow, that sucks about your Jeeps situation! Thank you though Wayne!! 👊🏻👍🏻
Sounds like you were in the croatan forrest
The best part of this is that the drawer fridge cost more than the original purchase of the Jeep itself! Obviously tons of upgrades that make this an incredible vehicle.
See!
Now that's well thought out and not overly built crazy!!

I just bought a 1991 xj as my first car. You’re video is great inspiration!
Trent Lowe Thank you! 😉👊🏻
One of the coolest builds I've seen in the US. Super efficient and practical. It's no wonder RV sales are declining. I gotta get that fox wing awning.
Great build super sweet.
Great build well thought out

You are very skilled gentleman. I pray I get my xj close to what your is like. Amazing!

Just bought my XJ and hope to make it an overland rig. Thank you for your thorough walk-through! I can't wait to get started. This is practical and not too over-the-top. Subscribed!
The quality of video this is. Tons of work put into the videography

Great choices all around. Thank you for sharing your clever setup!
Amazing build and setup!
Only thing else I would add is just medical kit. But I'm sure that's what that red bag was on the passenger seat. And a firearm. Everyone has a family and nice vehicles out there best be ready for the unexpected and safe. Good luck out there brother and excellent overview!

this is FANTASTIC! just bought a 1996 jeep cherokee sport
Awesome set up! I like how you put another fridge right up in between the front seats! Thats awesome, if my bed system was not in the way already then Id consider doing that too. The more storage and the more you can chill stuff the better!

Firebert79TA I’ve done the speedo gear correction and I’m certain that my mileage is correct! 😉👍🏻
Awesome build! Would love to do something like this! Oh and I love the little Kaleo whistle at the end!
Overland History - I like your attention to detail. Can we have a look see of that heat exchanger in the future?
Well thought-out. Don't see that generation Cherokee much anymore. My favorite generation.
Thank you Jayson!!
All that weight and you get 19-20mpg??? You are now officially my hero.
Awesome build! Minimal yet well thought out with all the appropriate luxuries.
FozRoamer _ Thanks Harley! Let’s have a chat soon about BROG stuff! 😉
Just saw this..anytime!!
Great Jeep man I love it. I love how you installed a shower system and kept the originals wheels. I miss my Cherokee so bad😫
I like that awning! I am in the middle of a 99 XJ build, mostly for wheeling and hunting. I’m not planning on building it for overlanding (yet), but I do like the awning for trial side cooking and whatnot.
Love this Outdoor Jeep set up ! Gives me motivation to fix mine
Really helpful video. Thanks for posting!
This is excellent on so many levels.
Nice build
legit my dream on the inside. the shower is just awe inspiring.
Awesome build! I never would of thought to see a shower on a xj but cool idea!
Nice build and well thought out and thanks for sharing your overland ride
Thank you Larry!
Getting an XJ soon and damn wish I had this guy to help do exact same thing minus the front console and pedal switch. Everything else 100%. Awesome
subbed I got you on Instagram to I enjoy your simplistic build style does the job and no more than what you need off-road wise unlike alot of other xj builds that I see on youtube🖒
my favorite xj I have seen yet, might have to steal some of these ideas for mine. very nice.
Thank you Ben!!
Excellent work! Thank you for taking to time to share your project with us. I have a 1998 Grand Cherokee 5.9 that Im wanting to build. Thanks again for the info. Its very helpful!
