eaglesfansurfin I was there, too. It was David Johannsen (of NY Dolls, and later Buster Poindexter) who opened, then The Clash, and then The Who. I remember security pulling a bunch of people over the fence in front of the stage. Awesome night.

Was there for this. I was a freshman at St.John's prep in Astoria and went with my friend Tom. The Clash was not well rec'd by the Who fans and did have sound issues. I recall wondering why the floor was not full. I was one of the Who fans who fell in love with the Clash after this show. This is when New York was still NEW YORK. I don't know what this new elite bullshit New York is. Bring back this era of in your face nyc!! We built this city!

I agree. I'd like to see this show on DVD , too. They held their own , surprisingly well. I remember hearing a show from the Who/Clash tour on the radio. You could tell they were'nt going over with The Who's crowd , like they did at Shea. Their "Fans" in the states had largely written them off by this time. I saw them in June , '82 , and they fucking killed it.

I was at this when the tour hit L.A.. Who fans not feeling Clash at all!! Clash's PA went out briefly during their set and that didn't help warm the crowd and win any fans. I spent all week before telling my friends how great the Clash were live and how they were gonna hold their own opening for the Mighty Who!! sadly, didn't happen that day....
the pit though during Clash was unlike anything I'd ever seen to that point. Got separated from my date in the crowd and didn't see her again till next day!! Lol

It wasn't you and it certainly wasn't the Clash. The same thing happened in Detroit. The boos were louder than the band. And they were great. Almost got my ass kicked so many times for having the "audacity" to wear a Clash shirt. Feels good to still be on the right side of history.

I spoke to the Guy that was the opening act that night, back in 2004, and good ol' D.J. said he 'Didn't even remember being there !"..the Guy was/is a ROCK STAR !

Actually, many guys were not missing anything to go to the bathroom. Many guys were pissing on the field. I was by second base a bit further away from the stage, and there was some room to alleviate oneself - lol. Incredible show. The surge to the chain links fence for the Clash set was wild.
