  • Comparison of two very close segments, but one with a decidedly clear advantage....in my opinion. This is why I went from owning John Deere’s big garden tractors to currently owning a 1023E.

    Very informative video. I faced this decision a few years ago and after adding every option to my X758 I was well over the cost of a 1 family. For me the deciding factor was the main purpose for buying the unit which was mowing the lawn. The 1 family stands taller and when sitting on the tractor your much higher up. Had I gone with the 1 family I would have had to trim branches on many trees to properly mow around them. I dont remember the actual figures but I remember the salesman and myself taking many measurements and ultimately it wasnt worth it. I ended up getting a X758 fully optioned and cant be happier. I use mine for mowing the lawn with the 54" belly mower and I also have a rear Woods finish mower for it and have no complaints after 85 hours of use.

      Yep, I would have liked a X758 being a L&G guy, but I wanted one tractor that could do it all and while the X758 could do nearly all that the 1023E could, maybe 90%, it was going to be substantially more money to make it work. So I'm guessing you went with a X700 series for rear PTO capability? I imagine if people just needed it to mow, a X500 series would have to be an option as a reduced price, although no diesel option there...anymore.

      That's a very good example where an X7 series makes more sense than a 1 series. From my understanding the X7 series is more compact in size. It is a more suitable machine for mowing around obstacles, under trees, on hillsides, and has a tighter turning radius than the 1 series. The X7 series comes factory equipped with either turf tires or heavy duty all purpose tires which are much more turf friendly than the deep lugged ag tires that come factory equipped on the 1 series. The X7 series does have its advantages over the 1 series.

    This was a great comparison, deff enjoyed it. Like you, was looking to upgrade from the X-540 to X-758. My three big reasons were switching the machine from snow duty to lawn duty. Gas to diesel power (I wanted the low rpm higher torque of the diesel) & four-wheel drive for the snow. After doing very similar research, it made no sense to purchase the X-758. With the one series, you pick up all the options. Front and rear PTO etc as You mentioned. There were two added plusses to the 1 series. A tighter turning radius when in 2 wheel drive & 2 differential speeds. The front axel on the 1 series is powered by a drive shaft. In the X-758 it's a fluid drive. It's a much more robust machine. In the snow up here in North Jersey, X-758 is similar to my wife's car. In the 1 series, it's like the four wheel drive in my pick-up. You know it's locked in. I have the 1025R, could not be happier with it. Is it overkill, yes! But, rather overkill then work the machine to a quick death. Liked your trailer video as well. Again, like you, I now need a larger trailer for the 1025R. Hope I can get as lucky here as You did.

    Excellent comparison. I am making this decision as well, let me share my reasoning why I’m leaning x7. 1.Anecdotally, if primary use is as a mower, the x7 is superior, better cut quality for a groomed lawn. 2. Tire damage/impact on a groomed lawn, the HDAP that are standard on the x7 vs the aggressive pattern standard on on the 1 series 3. AWD on the x7 vs 4WD on the 1 series, if you’ve driven both on a car or truck format, you understand the difference, 4wd is clunky with horrible turn radius (binding) made worse by speed. 4. My decision / price points are slightly different as I prefer gas vs diesel, various reasons and happy to elaborate if anyone asks. 5. I absolutely agree if the loader/3 point/rear PTO are important to you, it makes no sense to get an x7, in my case, mowing and snow are the primary uses and I will not add the expense of adding loader/PTO/3point to what would end up an overly expensive, less capable at those tasks machine. 6.I have a better chance of getting my wife excited about “her mower” vs “my tractor” lol, I have a Z920M as well that I am keeping. 7. I believe the x7 would blow away the 1 series in my circumstances for maneuverability IN MY USE CASE, (snow and mow) For these reasons, I am anxiously awaiting a 2021 X739 all wheel drive, all wheel steer. Would love to hear your thoughts and I appreciate the video and the very valid points you made.

      Thanks for watching and yes I agree with you in your case, a X series is the way to go. I loved my 445 and 60" deck and it mowed great , same with the 430 and 60" deck. The 1023 has an incredible turning radius for a larger machine, you might is surprised, but the longer wheelbase still makes it "larger". As far as yard and snow removal with the maneuverability and you are getting a 4WS, I don't have a leg to stand on. Gas, yep, not offered in the 1 series. Incidentally owning the 430 made me want the diesel:-). On the yard, people talk about weight and the 4WD, but when I mow, the tires don't rip up any of the grass, like ever and I mow in 2WD, so that's not an issue. I do imagine that when you are dealing with snow, an AWD would be better than 2WD or true 4WD. As far as cut quality, I do think my 445 and 430 mowed the best, but in my experience, the 1023 was right behind them, slight edge tot he L&G tractors. My selection and comparison was really to get a complete package. I used the 445 as my "do all" and loved it, but it was getting up in age and the new flexibility of the newer tractors, X series included would be better, drive over deck, etc. That was what put me over the edge to buying new, was the quick change out of attachments. And since I have attachments and wanted a loader and could actually save money, I sprung for the 1023E, the 1025R being $2K+ more. I no longer have tilt wheel, never used it and cruise control, hardly ever used it, but for $13,300, I got the tractor, deck and loader, 3pth and rear pto, I would have spent more than that on a X758 and not get the last three. The 7 Series are great tractors as their predecessors were too, but as a do everything "tractor package" , the 1 series in hard to beat for capability and price. But based on your needs, I'd say you are making the right choice. Don't forget to subscribe if you haven't yet, I still love to talk about the L&G's too.

      @@FloridaDeere Thanks, I have the 60” 7 iron deck on the Z and I wish it was still an option on the x series, I can’t explain thoroughly why I’m choosing the 54” deck on the the x739, might regret it, but if I can add just a little bit more maneuverability for my wife to use it, I’m getting zero pushback on the purchase so I’m going to roll with it, she wants to help mow, I’ll take it. Good to hear about the tires and turning radius, might make someone else who comes along an easier decision to go bigger. I’d love to have the loader and pallet forks would be great but the limited amount I’d use them makes more sense to rent something for a weekend if needed. I think the x739 is really going to be a win with the snow, I’m going with the blade and hydraulic angling to start but have the option to add on the snow thrower later if needed, just moved from Illinois to Maryland, snow thrower would be a no brainer there, I have a feeling here in Maryland the blade will be more than sufficient.

    • @FloridaDeere
      @FloridaDeere  3 роки тому +1

      @@nopresetsnarklimit1675 yeah, having no real snow knowledge in my adult life, but having spent some time on these forums and websites, I would say the X739 would excel at snow removal and the like. And yes the blade seems to be the way to go, cost and whatnot for the amount of snow in MD versus IL. And true on the 7 Iron, never had one and it was the thing that kept me away from the X485/X720/X730 was the cheaper decks compared to my 445 and 430, which basically had the predecessor to the 7 Iron, each deck was 300 and 367# respectively and the 62" was like 226, so clearly not commercial. Those tractors could be found with the 7 Iron, but it was pretty rare.

      @nopresent and @Florida Deere, just wanted to say I enjoyed this video and reading your comments.
      For me personally, we are closing on what we expect will be our age-in-place home on Monday morning, Nov 30, 2020, as in next week Monday. We are very excited.
      Because of this new to us home, our needs have changed from 3/4 acre, mostly level lot in a town with a short driveway of about 60 feet to several acres, 0.22 mile long driveway, etc. We are coming from a riding lawnmower, John Deere LA135 and walk behind snow blower. Oh, I’ve had some injuries so I have personal needs to limit bending / lifting and I need left arm rest support.
      Next week Tuesday we are taking delivery of a brand new 1025R, and a gaggle of attachments. I might have attachment addiction, LOL!
      Although all three of us have made different choices depending on our applications, wants and needs, these things have come a long way since I was a youth using my fathers Bolens garden tractor.

    Last year, I found a used 45 Loader for my 2007 X728 (that I purchased 3 years ago for $6,700 with a 48" deck, only 470 hours, and a quick hitch and 54" snow blade). It stinks that Deere no longer manufactures a loader for the X700-series tractors, but, from what I've read, a 45 Loader should be compatible with ALL 700-series. Mine was $3,300, which was only slightly less than what they went for new, but it's already paid for itself with all the projects I've been able to complete with a FEL. I'm now looking to add the 3pt hitch and rear PTO, but contemplating how much I could sell my current setup for to go towards a 1-series or 2-series instead.

    • @FloridaDeere
      @FloridaDeere  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, those loaders don't really lose value, I paid nearly as much for my 40 loader on the 445. I also had a 3 point and rear PTO, those tractors are super cool, especially yours being a 4X4, but the price point that JD had them at forced my hand into the 1 series. I think the X728 will give you years of good service and yes I agree, the FEL pays for itself despite the crazy price. Once you have a loader, there's no going back to not having a loader I think.

    Nice analysis. And with the buy two or more attachment items.I.e. Belly mower and loader the 1023e is hard to beat. One thing you didn’t mention, I believe, was the backhoe for a 1023E is a pain to fit later. Must be done by a dealer service Dept. So if any need for a backhoe it’s best to go with the 1025r which doesn’t require retro fitting like the E.
    For me I’m leaning to the x738. It may cost more in the long run adding accessories but I only have an acre of grass. And don’t plan to do much in the 6 acres of woods. At least the option is there to grow into a 3rd party loader, tiller etc. albeit those will be out of pocket unlike Deere bundled packages.

    The 400 series (4x5) went into pretty much the the sub compact class in the 90’s... when the next series was due out Kubota came out with the BX... Went with the 2 series as the 1 series and the 455s are not much different but just for new equipment to replace a 455 I would get a 1 series.

    Makes sense to me. If you are homesteading , 1 series. If you are just going to mow, you can get a monster zero turn way cheaper.

      @FloridaDeere  3 роки тому

      Yes, for just mowing, it's hard to beat a z-turn, but for the jack of all trades, it's hard to beat a 1 series. I'm not sure I even spend half my hours mowing.

    I’ve never been able to understand what the market is for one of those x series tractors. I guess if you just have a small yard and want to mow with it
    In that case I would get a zero turn.
    If I’m spending over $10,000 I will have a loader and a three point

    • @FloridaDeere

      I think there was a great market before the intro of the 1 series and before JD made the 1 series so competitive compared to the Super GT's. Like 70's through the 90's, they were awesome, still are, but their price/capability equation isn't as attractive as it used to be

      I have a zero turn, Z920m. Adding an x739, My use case is mowing and snow plow, I have no use for a loader or 3 point therefore the x series is a better mower for my needs.

      I have an older (2006) 3520 tractor that I have put over 800 hours on. Loader, tiller, box grader, and brush mower. The 3520 very reliably takes care of everything but mowing in luxury and with authority. Wanted a really nice mower after owning a home depot special and then an X324. I have some very steep terrain, lots of trees to mow around, so looked at the x739. Got one with 60" deck as I have several acres to mow. I am a bit of a Deere fan boy, but I'd have a hard time being happier about my choices.

    • @jonathonrossebo1783

      The x series tractors make sense if you're mowing steep, hilly terrain but also want a machine that can be used for snow removal, sweeping, tilling, and blade work. Also, unlike the zero turn mowers the x series tractors are available with 4 wheel drive for twice the traction of a zero turn and they don't scuff up the grass. Trust me those zero turn mowers don't like steep hills and they scuff up the grass easy.
