Hmmmm, well here is an idea. Maybe you can make a series of Filaments with Incense or Incense oils in them. Would be a good way to make the room smell nice while you are printing.
A very special" thank you" to Joel and David for taking time out of their holiday weekend to visit us. It was tons of fun, and I can't wait for tons more fun in 2017!
It sounds similar to the coffee filament? wonder if coffee grounds would work too... or some ground spices like cinnamon or maybe . If it blends will it print...
I have to agree, Lolita! I love the semi-transparent property of the filament, with the specks inside! I want to do this again, but with some glitter specks!
I've been watching this channel for a while now. I've never 3d printed anything in my life, and can't really afford that stuff as I'm still in high school but I have to say that you are just such a refreshing, entertaining, nice guy and I really appreciate how much you give to this channel. Can't wait to watch you grow even more!
What a great bunch of guys at Proto Pasta for doing the vid ! I can't use 2.85mm filament so that's a shame they ran that size, since most printers can't use it. But still a fun time was had by all !
so many awesome #3dpinkmafia prints in the showroom! It was awesome to see how Proto Pasta makes their filaments! I totally LOVE the way that your bacon filament looks! So cool!
3D Printing Nerd you actually replied! usually i come too late and/or the creator of the video doesn't notice. you make great content and i subbededed:) lol
The moment when the kit gets in a room full of nice things and doesn't touch nothing I'm like "Did you print this kid?" :D Congratulations, you got a very polite little man. :)
I was expecting food grade printers and materials... Disappointed on that front. Yet happy to have seen Bacon Filament at all. Maybe they just need that liquid bacon stuff they make to mix with a plastic powder.
yes it is crazy and amazing. Its almost looks like a cross of wood and metal. It dont even look like plastic. I am now curious what other foods can be made into fillaments
I wonder if filaments can be made using liquid scents (instead of powders), such as either essential oils (such as ginger or cinnamon), or extracts (such as vanilla or chocolate).
looking forward to the new series of the random filiments. just curious whats the highest bacon to plastic ratio you could get away with, before its pretty much unusable as a filiment.
Nice! I had a feeling either it was like "high-5 filament" or "bacon filament" or something like that... Now can you get Alex to make titanium filament JUST to try it... since you know... it sounds cool...
Maybe the bacon filament needs to actually go through the same smoking process as real bacon. Being PLA it should absorb the "smoke" and then be infused and smell like it when it prints.
This is really awesome!! would be cool if they made a whole line of scented products possibly like scented candles. The products made with it would smell great for a long while. I'm thinking like a strawberry shortcake doll. Those dang things always smell great lol
Probably easiest at the moment just to spray the scent on the finished product. Essential oils don't often get on well with plastic, or with being heated up to hundreds of degrees.
Really looking forward to this becoming a series. Would it be possible to make actually striped filament? Angus took a can of spray paint to a roll of filament and got some interesting results, but it would be even more wicked if there was factory-made filament that did that. #highfive!
Oooooo I really wish you had 1.75mm filament for it. You should sign the roll, so it has more value! If I win the filament I will use the hole roll and treasure the roll forever!
This may sound cruel but what about fly filament? Maybe if some of us printed squares with that filament and left it outside, it would help some people with arachnophobia, by directing the spiders somewhere else
I wonder whether anyone has tried making a non-Newtonian filament? D3O is a polyurethane energy-absorbing material containing several additives and Polyborodimethylsiloxane a dilatant non-Newtonian fluid. But, even if that mixture is patented, corn starch is one of the easiest to get ingredients. If we can print and create a flexible, non-Newtonian gel, then we can make our own armor, gadget protectors, and . . . everything else
Your coin looks like sand. That would be a nice sandy looking filament. Did you work at proto pasta when you did this? I thought I’ve seen you say in newer videos that you worked at proto pasta.
I think a liquid nitrogen pulverizing technique would help with some of the gummier products. Speaking of gummier products, how about chewing gum scented flexible filament?
Regardless of how it smells, it looks amazing. Very cool idea. I can't wait to see what you make next time. Long time viewer, just got a laptop for the lounge so I could comment. Was on PS4 since Sept 2015. LOL, Keep up the awesome vids.
Man I'd love to get some of that bacon filament. Watching this video was way too much fun at work LOL! BTW, we already build with Stainless Steel Proto Pasta, and just ordered in some Carbon Fiber a customer wants for their build.
this is actually a 1D printer that creates the base-material for the 3D printers. i wonder if the the chain continues and there is a 5D printer that takes the output of the 3D printer?... INCEPTION!
hey joel umm.. 15.30 you mentioned all Canadians have their heads cut off.. didn't explain the southpark reference we found it hilarious lol cheers #highfive
Hey Joel so I've been watching all these videos on all different kinds of filament looking for new and interesting materials and I've noticed that a lot of reinforced filaments are just abs mixed with another strong material such as metal or carbon fiber, and that got me thinking about plastic compounds that already exist and I remembered a lot of power tools and other utility tools are made of or use a glass fiber reinforced plastic in their construction. I tried looking up a glass fiber reinforced filament but came to the conclusion that it didn't exist. Next time your by Proto Pasta you should ask them if they know why it doesn't exist I'm really curious as to why. I think a glass reinforced filament would be as strong as a PLA and as flexible as an ABS.
+Ben Lawson - Glass Fiber Reinforced filament is already being made by 3dxtech using the Eastman Amphora PETG: www.3dxtech.com/3dxmax-glass-fiber-reinforced-petg/
bacon filament would be great for making fishing lures
Ooh, think so? Would enough “stink” be left in order to attract the fish?
3D Printing Nerd maybe not but I'd take the chance, it wouldn't hurt and it'd be a nice marketing point
Sounds like I should revisit and go fishing :)
3D Printing Nerd any reason to fish is a good one 😂
@@proven22x52 how about maggot filament?
I want green tea filament :P The color change was interesting and unexpected haha, really nice finish though.
Just you wait until we get going in 2017 ;)
Maker's Muse I
your son seems so unamused.
Hmmmm, well here is an idea. Maybe you can make a series of Filaments with Incense or Incense oils in them. Would be a good way to make the room smell nice while you are printing.
A lavender-scented filament would be great!
We already make Cinnamon, Coffee, and Pine scented filaments...seems only natural!
Proto-pasta I thought oils and incense had a certain flashpoint that keep it from being extruded? I was tempted to try on my filastruder.
We tried oils and the smell seemed to burn off just like you said. Also, makes the pellets slip. Stick to solids...
Do you clean after so that regular batches aren't contaminated
"Just don't drop it"
*pro slams the bag on the floor*
Paul Pardee totally true
That's funny
A very special" thank you" to Joel and David for taking time out of their holiday weekend to visit us. It was tons of fun, and I can't wait for tons more fun in 2017!
i'm so dissapointed that you didn't printed a pig or a porkchop
Good one.
11:50 is what I picture how my school makes food
+3Dforge hahahahah
3Dforge same
I have no clue how my school makes food
Teach-Tech-Talk 11:39 actually
Yeah, isn't humanity great? They feed the kids with trash, teach them bullshit and expect them to become decent citizens.
It is a small thing, but as a headphone user, it helps when you warn us about the loud sounds. And great video man!
Oh shoot, did I miss some sounds? dang it. I've been trying to be better about that.
3D Printing Nerd I think it was more in the terms of thanks for the blender warning.
3D Printing Nerd Yeah, he was thanking you.
It sounds similar to the coffee filament?
wonder if coffee grounds would work too... or some ground spices like cinnamon or maybe .
If it blends will it print...
Cinnamon released at Proto-pasta.com last month. Check it out!
And we released Coffee more than 1 year ago :-)
Warden Tauros m
Warden Tauros ii
Piggy bank printed using bacon filament... PERFECT!
YES
That kid is so lucky. His dad has 3D printers and he can print so much. He also gets so many exclusive tours.
These prints are so pretty... the way the light shines off it is amazing... the little particles definitely add to it, bacon or not
I have to agree, Lolita! I love the semi-transparent property of the filament, with the specks inside! I want to do this again, but with some glitter specks!
I've been watching this channel for a while now. Can't wait to watch you grow even more!
Wow, thank you! That's incredibly nice of you to say!
This fractal cube is unbelievable. Congrats and i am lookinv forward to testing proto pasta filament. Well done Joel.
They should try making a pink filament with bubblegum smell.
Proof that bacon makes everything better!
Love the Tardis sweatshirt.
I had thought about that, but I don't think there are enough organic compounds within the Bacos bacon bits to mold. I could be wrong. Time will tell.
I like how that little kid gave us honest reviews!
+Edgard you know it. He doesn't hold back.
One of my favorite videos - love seeing how things are done behind the scenes. Really happy that it is just the start of a series.
What a great bunch of guys at Proto Pasta for doing the vid ! I can't use 2.85mm filament so that's a shame they ran that size, since most printers can't use it. But still a fun time was had by all !
I'd call that a bronze color. The particles give it a metallic glimmer by my perspective. I'd love a spool of it.
Garlic filament. I'd buy the flargo out of that.
That might smell worse than bacon...ew ;-)
Might never get that smell out of the machines :-)
Well the slightest bit of garlic flavour can enhance any food... So maybe it can enhance every filament?
This is such a cool idea. And it's cool that you were able to take your son and make a new filament! Thanks for sharing. :)
It has the sheen of a stretched taffy with little particles, looks really cool.
it would've worked better with real bacon that was fully cooked then freeze dried to remove any moisture
The finish of the material is amazing. I love it. Great work ProtoPasta and Joel.
so many awesome #3dpinkmafia prints in the showroom! It was awesome to see how Proto Pasta makes their filaments! I totally LOVE the way that your bacon filament looks! So cool!
What a time to be alive! :D
"fractal cube" looks more like a pyramid to me ;-)
yeah, me too. oops :)
rallekralle11 looks like a triforce pyramid fractal
+Joakim Innvær that's correct!
3D Printing Nerd you actually replied!
usually i come too late and/or the creator of the video doesn't notice.
you make great content and i subbededed:)
lol
+Joakim Innvær I sure did! Thanks for watching, and thanks for the sub! #highfive
Love how you’re more enthusiastic than ur son
OMG, that is such a cool idea, that wild card idea!!! AWESOME!!! I can't wait to see them.
The moment when the kit gets in a room full of nice things and doesn't touch nothing I'm like "Did you print this kid?" :D
Congratulations, you got a very polite little man. :)
+Costa Lara aww, thanks :)
Next time your make a custom roll make a camo filament with like 3-4 different shades of green ect.
Haha David shooting everything down. Love this kid.
Haha! Proto-Pasta makes the coolest filaments!
Man your kids a trooper. #highfive to them!
that's one of the best looking filiments I've seen. colour looks awesome.
You missed out on a Canadian bacon joke with the hulk pig
Yes, I did. Crap. heh.
I thought the same thing :-)
How about pine scented. You can print xmas tree.
Look for a special release later this week. We did Pine last year and are doing it again as a very limited release!
child labor is in this video it shows a very happy child throwing a bag a plastic and bacon he is also having a great time
oh my gosh... a 3d printed bacon fractal is so epic.
so I just took a break at work so I could watch this immediately! o.m.g. I knew it! I need this in my life!
also its fascinating to see how filament is made! thanks for sharing this with us!
u cant eat it.
17Industries Thanks, sherlock. I thought I could eat solid plastic.
Emberfrost 79 woah woah woah slow down on the sarcasm, now. Calm down and drink a cup of water
BACON!
That fractal cube looks a lot like a fractal pyramid ... ain't that strange :-)
+Spike Kent oh crap did I say cube???
Oh yeah ... twice :-)
Great video, love the idea of the Wildcards
I was thinking his definition of cube is different than the one I use. OR "I don't think that word means what you think it means"
cheeto4493 Hahahahaha. Man, I suck! :)
That was really good of them to do that, their filament fu is strong
Very strong.
I was expecting food grade printers and materials... Disappointed on that front. Yet happy to have seen Bacon Filament at all.
Maybe they just need that liquid bacon stuff they make to mix with a plastic powder.
Which will be the next exotic filaments you will create with Proto Pasta??? Please tell us!
You'll find out in 2017 ;)
MULTIPLE TARDISES SPOTTED. VERY HAPPY
omg that color is so amazing and shiny
Isn't it crazy? I love it!
yes it is crazy and amazing. Its almost looks like a cross of wood and metal. It dont even look like plastic. I am now curious what other foods can be made into fillaments
The clumping problem at the start of the process could probably have been avoided by baking it for a while to dry it out.Really nice idea though.
Oh, that's a GREAT idea!
I wonder if filaments can be made using liquid scents (instead of powders), such as either essential oils (such as ginger or cinnamon), or extracts (such as vanilla or chocolate).
Thank you for showing us how filament is made !
How about a gold or silver or sparkly confetti filament.
We released silver glitter last week (called Glitter Flake HTPLA). Check it out at Proto-pasta.com :-)
@Proto-pasta
Thank you for making these oddball filaments. Mad science makes the world a more interesting place.
Oh man....I'm almost 3 years too late for this giveaway. Dang it! Love the vids, Joel. David makes a good sidekick. Great content!
OH NOES! We will try to do a fun filament give away soon!
How about Rootbeer and Play-Doh scented filament?! That would be cool!!
#highfive
Well THAT is an idea!
Norbert Davis Play-Doh!! yes!! :D
Did it eventually go off since it has meat in it?
Anyone else find the crinkling of the bag satisfying?
Anyone else thinking of triforce while printing the fractile triangle? (Sorry for spelling)
I was!
looking forward to the new series of the random filiments. just curious whats the highest bacon to plastic ratio you could get away with, before its pretty much unusable as a filiment.
Nice! I had a feeling either it was like "high-5 filament" or "bacon filament" or something like that... Now can you get Alex to make titanium filament JUST to try it... since you know... it sounds cool...
I love those fractal pyramids
Proto-Pasta is always innovating; with a little help from Joel's crazy idea's.. :-)
Yeah they are! Just wait until 2017 :)
Maybe the bacon filament needs to actually go through the same smoking process as real bacon. Being PLA it should absorb the "smoke" and then be infused and smell like it when it prints.
Joel, I am curious what happens if you use weed eater/wacker line as filament. Any chance you could possibly risk one of your printers and test that?
This is really awesome!! would be cool if they made a whole line of scented products possibly like scented candles. The products made with it would smell great for a long while. I'm thinking like a strawberry shortcake doll. Those dang things always smell great lol
Yeah, gotta work on making the smell stick around when the plastic is no longer warm :-)
are you here in Washington ProtoPasta?
Probably easiest at the moment just to spray the scent on the finished product. Essential oils don't often get on well with plastic, or with being heated up to hundreds of degrees.
Nathan Prescott yup
greenaum good point
I love the color of the prints
That needs to be a product, in 1.75 :p
TheRedGamer Not really, They could just do the same pellets through a 1.75 extruder.
its the same extruder. it just gets streched to match the diameter, so they just need to set it.
Yep Vader is right, it's the speed it gets pulled before cooling!
@protopasta weird question.. would they be able to use Kevlar yarn in their filaments?
Joel, your kid is so CUTE! I want to hug and never let him go! hahaha
Really looking forward to this becoming a series. Would it be possible to make actually striped filament? Angus took a can of spray paint to a roll of filament and got some interesting results, but it would be even more wicked if there was factory-made filament that did that.
#highfive!
We will hopefully do all sorts of experiments!
I want to know how long it'll take before the exposed baco-bits particles in the surface grow mold.
The South Park reference had me rolling! Good stuff Joel.
you should print Bacon...make the bacon filament the white and red plastic the red...
Thank you for saving my ears with the warning
Wow, UA-cam is smart, the ad before this video was Joel endorsing MatterHackers. Great algorithm UA-cam, its not stupid for once.
Haha this reminds me of the coin sorting video when people thought it was called coin snorting. You snorted that coin good
Uh how were the prints done with the filament If the package was still sealed at the end?
Proto-pasta: The only place where everything is good enough!
ha!
I know this is an old video, but they compound on a single screw extruder?
Bright pink with glitter and bubble gum or strawberry small 👌😍
Getting a 3d printer in a few days.
Yes dad's still get cool stuff on Christmas too ya know.
cool vid! my kids would have loved to see that
I don't see why they can't make a production line of workers throwing bags of pellets at each other. Best thing I've witnessed for a while
DUDE - that would be incredible!
I don't have a 3d printer, nor the skills do to any of this... But I love watching it.
A whole new meaning to the phrase "makin' bacon"
I wonder whether anyone has tried making a non-Newtonian filament?
D3O is a polyurethane energy-absorbing material containing several additives and Polyborodimethylsiloxane a dilatant non-Newtonian fluid.
But, even if that mixture is patented, corn starch is one of the easiest to get ingredients.
If we can print and create a flexible, non-Newtonian gel, then we can make our own armor, gadget protectors, and . . . everything else
I would watch a "Will It Make Filament?" series.
would it be worth buying your $5 spools instead of other companies $30 ones?
I wish this was 1.75 cause it looks surprisingly good!
Is this just for the smell or is it somehow edible?
Regardless of how it smells, it looks amazing. Very cool idea. I can't wait to see what you make next time. Long time viewer, just got a laptop for the lounge so I could comment. Was on PS4 since Sept 2015. LOL, Keep up the awesome vids.
that filament could be my merch
no
That would be such a cool experience as a little kid(or older)
Man I'd love to get some of that bacon filament. Watching this video was way too much fun at work LOL! BTW, we already build with Stainless Steel Proto Pasta, and just ordered in some Carbon Fiber a customer wants for their build.
That's awesome - I LOVE the Proto Pasta carbon fiber!
this is actually a 1D printer that creates the base-material for the 3D printers. i wonder if the the chain continues and there is a 5D printer that takes the output of the 3D printer?... INCEPTION!
Such a fantastic video! I enjoyed every minute of it. You make me smile, Joel. Licorice Candy (or fennel) might make a nice smelling filament.
Is there a way to make variegated filament?
hey joel umm.. 15.30 you mentioned all Canadians have their heads cut off.. didn't explain the southpark reference we found it hilarious lol cheers #highfive
What's extremely funny is that the camera man's name is alex, so is mine. THIS VIDEO IS SO IMMERSIVE. Well at that one point
Here at 3D Printing Nerd we attempt to offer very interactive content ;)
Hey Joel so I've been watching all these videos on all different kinds of filament looking for new and interesting materials and I've noticed that a lot of reinforced filaments are just abs mixed with another strong material such as metal or carbon fiber, and that got me thinking about plastic compounds that already exist and I remembered a lot of power tools and other utility tools are made of or use a glass fiber reinforced plastic in their construction.
