Colouring books teach people, especially children, how to hold a pen. There is such a noticeable difference between children that have and have not been given colouring books when they start learning to write that charities give them to preschoolers whose families are struggling. They are one of many things that increased literacy in the late 1800’s and early 1900,s.

What a fun project to venture into. “Sock fish” 😆 As a coloring book artist I think line art from older illustrations were like some are today designed for two purposes. Coloring, of course, is one, but the other is just to enjoy art for those that want the illustrations. That’s also why they had poems. Then you might be able to sell twice as much for those that think coloring is “just for kids”. I do this with some of mine. Kids or adults often colored in black and white illustrations in regular storybooks as black in only illustrations have always cost less than colored printing. I think that’s where they came up with making an actual coloring book. Maybe one of their kids commandeered a regular book and that sparked the idea. 😂 “Adult” coloring books I had in the 80s and 90s sometimes had a bit more lines to them as well. But back then they were just marketed as Coloring Books and adults bought them.
When I was on a college trip my junior year (2007), one of the other students brought a kid coloring book along and several of us-guys and gals-spent an evening coloring pages from it, with crayons. I still like having both kid (all ages) and adult coloring books to color in because sometimes I want to color a page that is more intricate and other times I just want an easy page with larger areas to color.
If you've never seen it, Kirsty Rice found an old watercolor coloring book like this. Not quite as old, but probably about 100 years old. She actually painted in it - with vintage watercolors no less - and the paper held up surprisingly well. As to the drawing style, if you think about political cartoons from this era, they were also surprisingly detailed with a lot of lines. Not the simple outline style we're used to today. I thought it was very clever how you reproduced these drawings!
For alcohol markers, I think the next best thing to a Copic are the Ohuhu, and I think that's what the majority of people will tell you. There are some more budget friendly brands but in my opinion the biggest drawback is that they're not sold open stock and they don't have refills so you can't replace individual markers, you have to buy a whole new set. So that's one reason why Ohuhu is a great option. The Ohuhu brand is a great quality and they are kind of expensive but they're much more affordable than Copic. Arrtx has a good set of alcohol markers but I'm not sure if they're sold open stock or if they offer refills. If you go with Ohuhu I would suggest either the full set or the Honolulu set to get the best variety of colors. But if you're just using them for basing and you go over it with colored pencils for the shading then you can get away with just getting the set of pastel colors.
@@silvers_ink Honolulu is actually the style of the pen not the actual size of the set. They have several styles, all named after the Hawaiian Islands. The Honolulu have the brush tip. Honolulu sets A have the brush tip on one end and chisel on the other. Set B has the brush tip with the small bullet tip. I am not sure what the other tips are called and the style but those ones come in all size sets.

The urge to create art just for fun definitely fits into that category. Thanks for the info!

I really enjoyed this video and I think you should do more older drawings/paintings! The music was also a good choice so keep it up!
I love Epson printers. We have two at work that I went and picked out. I'm so happy with them! We've had them for over a year maybe close to 2 now and I've only had to refill the black one time. I haven't had to refill the color at all. Of course I don't print much color. But either way they still last a long time! I would say however, that I do print probably more than most small businesses. And the printers themselves were very affordable as is the ink refills. Very affordable!
I put coloring pages together for some ladies in a retirement home about 2 months ago, and I had the same shock about all the shading and the detailed lines, lol. Personally, I would have never chosen images like that because most of the clients have lost a lot of their fine motor skills, but my colleague insisted on choosing them for the nostalgia factor. They certainly were cute and pretty, though. Now knowing they were meant for watercolor makes a lot more sense, though. All these tiny little areas would've been a pain with colored pencils.
I'm a stamper, paper crafter and for a reasonably priced alcohol based marker I love Spectrum Noir, especially the Tri-Blends. I've also heard great things about Ohuhu markers, great price, good quality from what people say.

I’m not sure if they made the original ones as well or if it was someone else (there were two versions of Samantha’s Summer Amusements set which is the set with the watercolors). If I can ever find a decent set within my budget, on the secondary market, I would like to get it and make a video using the paints. Anyway, I have so many different art supplies since starting to watch other art YTers a few years ago so I don’t always get around to using them often. For alcohol markers, I have Copics, some Ohuhu, a few Artist Loft, a few Arteza, and some Spectrum Noirs. I think the Ohuhus are a nice alternative to Copics and any of the brands can be used together, as far as I know. I’m hoping to ask my dad for your new book for Christmas. My birthday is at the end of December as well!
A good brand I recommend for markers is tombow!! They make both really good water based and alcohol based markers and you can even find them in the clearance aisle. In fact all the alcohol based ones I have I bought from the clearance section of Michael's and they're still my favorite alcohol based markers. The watercolor ones I bought full price way before I knew there was alcohol based ones, and even they are great!!
LOVE these! You made them so beautiful! I wish I knew how to do the digital art! I’m clueless 😂 but so many of my paintings are things I have to print or trace from my tablet so this would be amazing. Does anyone know a reasonably cheap app that allows you to trace like this? So cool.! Great job as usual Chloe!!!! Much love from Lake Cumberland Kentucky ❤
I remember my dad had grownup coloring books when I was a kid in the 1970s, and I bet they were around earlier than that. The book featured abstract and textile-style patterns. He even let me color a few pages.
I love to color with alcohol ink markers. I have cheap temu ones. But then I layer colored pencil on top of it for shading and details. The result is gorgeous! Even just little blending touches makes a huge difference. It also makes getting lighter skin tones easier.
You should look up Christl Vogls coloring books. She is a German artist her work is very vintage inspired. She has a few coloring books. I have Ausmalreise Der Verwunschene Wald, its really cute.

@ChloeRoseArt Girl, yes! If I accidentally forget to brush before washing, it's a nightmare, and even when I do, it still takes 20 minutes to gently comb it after. I have a LOT of thin wavy hair, and the longer it's gotten, the less and less curly it is. So it's normally in french braids. I've already warned my hubby he might come home to a wife w short-hair in the near future. Yours is so healthy and beautiful, it temps me sooo much! ❤️
My suggestion for markers are ohuhu. They are the cheapest ones I know of and have a huge range of colors. They also are really easy to blend and just simply use in general!
That’s my next printer. I have 2 Epson ecotanks (long story) however I need one that prints cardstock and A3. So when the ink runs dry one the two I have that’s my next purchase.. great little find, that book must have been great in the day!
For a more reasonably priced marker not sure if I spell I right but ohho or something like that, from what a few ppl have said they are up there on the same quality as the Copic markers. And they have also been making paper that is outstanding. You can leave a marker on it draining and it won’t bleed through. So give them a look into. Loving the old time prints super cool. Tfs ❤😊
@@ChloeRoseArt don't waste your money on it. Amy Shulke did a deep dive review on them and Ohuhu's paper. their bleedproof paper is just two 75gsm papers sandwiched together. it does not hold ink very well and will turn into a sticky mess.
I use Spectrum Noir markers and I like them. Jazza has done a few videos on markers if you want to dig those up. I also have an Epson Ecotank, best printer I've ever had.
Your welcome 😊 I've been a big fan of your channel for years also a subscriber from your bestie Rae at SuperRaeDizzle absolutely love her channel too ❤️
Since you modified the original drawing... I think it would be a good thing to tone the line with a sepia like color and print it on watercolor paper paper... I think it would be less harsh with watercolor than with a dark line. What do you think?

What a beautiful bride!
Chloe you made a beautiful bride! “A fluffy turd” LOL! Ohuhu has alcohol markers for reasonable prices.
Thank you! Ohuhu is at the top of my list for sure
@@ChloeRoseArt don't fall for the Ohuhu thing. they are overhyped garbage.
Much love from Lake Cumberland Kentucky ❤
very cute coloring pages ,I love epson I have one is a great printer is a little fussy on what papers will print on though at least mine is.
Fun! That's an interesting little slice of history.
I can't stand for this butterfly slander, though =P
I love the history!!!
Great research and beautiful hard work!! 🤗😍🥰
Order for activity book placed. Excited
Omg i used to have this coloring book. My step dad was an antique hunter. I never appreciated it as much as i should have.
You should look up Christl Vogls coloring books. She is a German artist her work is very vintage inspired. She has a few coloring books. I have Ausmalreise Der Verwunschene Wald, its really cute.
Scratching/hatching is how you do shading on a printing press
That was scrumptious.
i love how u did it
Pretty cool concept!
Woww 😍😍
8:27 Yes! Exactly! They are just as horrible and crawly as all other bugs. My friends laugh at me, saying ing they’re just butterflies. Not with their antenna and horrible bug lags 🤮
Haha yes! I came to the comments to say something similar. They may look pretty from afar, but that can stay afar from me 😆
I think the extra dress was petticoats they would wear everyday. Love your videos. Congrats on getting married I pray you have an awesome and blessed marriage
You looked GORGEOUS in your wedding dress 😮❤ And hubby was handsome. Please, please share your photos of the handmade wedding decorations, please…
Thank you!! I actually made a video about 8 months ago making my decorations ✨
Awe, My sister in law lives in Wool, and those cliffs really do look like the shore in Bournemouth/Poole area!
Ohuhu markers👍
Chloe, what is the tablet and art program you are using here??? Iss there a specific video to see you introduce these???
I am patiently awaiting your brushes restock!
They’re coming!! And possibly another two sets as well 👀
I would love to see you color in 1960’s - Kim’s Genuine Antique Dolls Coloring Book, Jumbo sized or at least print from it a page and color it ❤
Love you girly❤❤❤ Your hair looks amazing! Makes me want to cut my bottom length locks!
Awe thank you so much!! It was very freeing when I cut mine but a lot of it was that I was sick of the constant tangles 🤣
Roaches with pretty wings 🤣🤣🤣🤣 doesn’t fool me. Hilarious 😂
Beautiful!! Been a while since I got out the crayons, this is motivational!!
Tfs ❤😊
Thank you!! Ohuhu is at the top of my list right now, I’m tempted to get the big set but also I feel like I’ll never get through it 😂
@@ChloeRoseArt don't waste your money on it.
Amy Shulke did a deep dive review on them and Ohuhu's paper.
their bleedproof paper is just two 75gsm papers sandwiched together. it does not hold ink very well and will turn into a sticky mess.
Ohuhu is the absolute best and I actually prefer them over copic! I find the nib is less mushy than copic and the price is way better!!
Great video. Love the boat and the umbrella best. Don’t use alcohol markers, but seems lots of people use ohuhu
I use Spectrum Noir markers and I like them. Jazza has done a few videos on markers if you want to dig those up. I also have an Epson Ecotank, best printer I've ever had.
Posted 2 min ago. How did I manage that?
I love page two ❤ and tbh ohuhu markers are my favorite
Absolutely love your content ❤
Thank you so much ✨
Your welcome 😊 I've been a big fan of your channel for years also a subscriber from your bestie Rae at SuperRaeDizzle absolutely love her channel too ❤️
This was a great video!
Another vote for ohuhu markers here ✋
Jazza tested loads of them a while back (I have no idea how long that while is) and ohuhu won!
This was really cute. For alcohol marker I think Ohuhu are the best and they are not expensive.
The way I LOST IT when Chloe called butterflies “roaches with wings” 😂😂😂
I stand by my words 😂
Love ❤️ you Chloe! Love ❤️ from Texas!
Since you modified the original drawing... I think it would be a good thing to tone the line with a sepia like color and print it on watercolor paper paper... I think it would be less harsh with watercolor than with a dark line. What do you think?
😂🤣 I, too, have called my mum over to kill a spider in my house, and I'm 32!!!! Lololol
🤣🤣🤣
im happy u got a ecotank printer we have one an love it
Yet monopoly is my favorite game arguments or not
I am creeped out by ladybugs but i love butterflies
This is a really cool idea. The artwork is adorable and your replica is really cool
Ohuhu hands down love
that's interesting to see the lil history
