- From Sitar maestros Ravi Shankar, Vilayat Khan to Shubhendra Rao, instrument-makers Rikhi Ram and sons have served the best artists in the genre of Hindustani classical music. The story of these iconic craftsmen spans three generations. Sanjay Sharma and his wife Manjul run the Rikhi Ram outlet in Gole Market, New Delhi. They talk about what makes a good instrument-maker, the challenges in the industry and how the craft can be promoted in India.
The original Rikhi Ram store that was set up in Connaught Place is currently under property dispute and is run by Sanjay’s brother Ajay Sharma, who is also an instrument-maker.

I went into this store yesterday not realising the huge history is has and the icon that it is. Loved it. I wish there were more craftsman in India especially making musical instruments

I bought a large two gourd Ravi Shankar style Sitar back in 1980 from your father (your grandfather was also in the shop) Very nice finish and easy low action even tuned on C sharp unusual for a big instrument but I found the bottom end a bit boomy and top end a bit metallic sounding. The Sitar in this clip sounds more mellow like Nikhil Banerjee sound. Next time I am in India I will visit. Good wishes.

RIcky Ram is just a family thriving on monopoly .. Baniyas selling goods at the highest possible price - just like the few rich elite gharanas of classical music in India .. fact is, there are as many good luthiers and craftsmen of sitar in Kolkata, Varanasi and few other places in North India.. Who make as good sitars at a much lesser price ...
Samrat B first of all, you are posting from an alias. If you have a real opinion without any ulterior motive, then you would not be hiding behind an alias. Secondly, if you are as knowledgable as you are projecting, then you should know that Rikhy Ram has built their good will with sincerity and sheer hard work across half a century. Do not grudge them the fame. It is very well deserved.
Alias? Ulterior Motive? See My Google Profile or UA-cam Channel : there is no alias ... Name Location Interest. Works and Videos as well- To explain again - This one eyed fame and celebration is lame and questionable. Just like the few families and institutions which exploit / control the Indian classical music legacy. Ravi Shanker or Some Guru XYZ - Why just praise one Rikhy Ram? There are over 50 different instrument makers in North India alone - Do you know of Rangarsons in Old Delhi? Or Daljit SIngh Instrument Maker? Or Murshid Alam Sons in Meerut Or folks in Calcutta and Bankura like Manoj Kumar Sons. All these and more are excellent instrument makers who have as much a legacy and history and expertise.
This docu about one random family is hardly objective or representative of the real skills, struggles and history of Indian classical instrument makers and their lives.
So is it their fault that they are preferred by most renowned artists? The level of personalization and personal attention given by Rikhy Ram ji earlier and now his younger son Sanjay endears these artists to this legendary instrument maker.
About your sentiments, there may be better artists too, but that should not mean that those in the spotlight should start feeling guilty for it.

Your missing the point - these elite families do not represent the real struggles and stories of Indian classical instrument makers. Imagine, Kite Makers, there are thousands - Yet we keep celebrating one big store in Purani Dilli ? Makes sense ? Celebrating rich elites makes no difference to the actual reality of the situation ...
You say this only because you have seen them only after they became famous. Many of them have struggled and persevered for decades to reach this status. Artists like late Pt Ravi Shankar, Shivaprasad Sharma, Bhimsen Joshi, late Bismillah Khan or Ustad Amjad Ali Khan etc. were not born into fame...They worked hard to earn it.
It must be their sitar in strawberry fields forever.

Excellent information about people behind Indian classical music instruments. Lucknow had and probably still has the famous shop on Latouche Road where Mausiqaar-e-Azam Naushad Ali worked and learned classical music. It would be nice to get some information about this and other places in Lucknow, including the Bhatkhande Music University (aka Morris College). Thanks

Mass produced and this is a loss for sitar players everywhere in that if you wish to play a good sitar you're forced to find an old sitar built many years ago when truly they were built by hand by legendary Craftsmen using materials and
Rare types of very easond and rare wood to build the instrument from that can no longer be obtained .
This makes the new sitars almost always inferior in sound quality that it's like
It's not a sitar being played.

People not being able to obtain or play on decent Sitar unless one has to 5 to 8 K

They are very good at making the instruments , used to be almost at per hiren roy or kanailal. But they are extraordinarily overpriced, Taking 2000$ for 500$ sitar is not justified.
