A great hack for bladders/hose/magnets is to get a retractable ID badge holder with a carabiner. The plastic strap for the ID will go around the hose and then the carabiner can attach to the pack. With that the hose will never flop around and it is even easier to grab and drink and just let it fall out of your mouth and it retracts back to your waist. Was a game changer for my Osprey hip pack.
I went from a full-time CamelBak backpack to racing with bottles in kit to full time bottles daily. It's been five years since I've ridden full-time and the fanny-pack idea has been one of the most successful transitions for MTBers. Everything is there in a little setup, just grab and go. I grabbed a used Dakine Hot Laps 5L and ordered a new Mazama bladder all in for a out $42. Love your review!!
Thanks for the review and sizing details - it's difficult to find reviews or even any gear for women dirt bikers, so your waist pack review for mountain backing is extremely helpful to me! I'm one size up and plan on getting the evoc hip pack pro so it doesn't dig into my waist like my current patagonia one.
i've got the Osprey Seral 7l hip pack, fully loaded it can bounce a little when going through bumpy sections, but once you drink some of the water on the way up the mountain that is usually more than enough to make it so it doesn't bounce much at all. i attach a retractable badge holder (like one you would use to attach a pass card to your belt in an office building) and just attach that right next to the magnet so you can just let go of the tube once done drinking and it will go right back to the magnet (sometimes it ends up on the magnet, sometimes not but either way it doesn't move very far away from that spot while riding)
I’ve tried loads of these and each has pros and cons. Fit is key. I found that an I.D. Lanyard can manage the hose/ bite valve. I empty and freeze the bladder between uses. Also, a puffy envelope ( like bubble wrap) will keep the bladder and water insulated during use. I hope this helps. Ride on.
I ride an Osprey Savu 5. I prefer a water bottle style hip pack. Osprey stuff is engineered super well AND they have a lifetime warranty, no questions asked! I also use their Raptor 14 backpack, which is super amazing. cheers!
This was an informative and timely review as my wife is looking into switching from a backpack to a hip pack. Your reviews are so well done and always helpful!
I run the dakine hot laps. I'm a big fan of water bottle storage on the pack, don't like bladders to much. So far no issues with the pack, only used it one season so far. I'm at the opposite side of the spectrum. My bag is almost max out but mine is to small. Hopefully I'll lose some weight during the season
Thanks Tess, I just ordered the 3L Pro in the Sulfur/Moss color for Bikepacking and SUP, Your review really helped me finally decide what to get after years of looking.
I love the Evoc pro! I do carry two water bottles as well. Sometimes when I run the reservoir I use the two side wattle bottle pockets to carry my wind best or warmers. Please do more reviews!
I'm using a Deuter Pulse 3 with a Osprey 1.5 l water bladder. I love the combo and the way a hip pack feels while letting my back breathe. It's awesome!
Mountainsmith makes really cool bum bags! I have the tour model for longer trips. Lots of size options and great build quality, as well as dry bag versions.
Great Review! Thanks! I have been really enjoying my Fjallraven Ulvo hip pack from Sweden the past few years. I would describe it as ultra light and simple, high quality, reasonably priced ($55), and very well designed (small on the outside and big on the inside). It's long enough to fit a higher volume mini pump, a disposable bottle of water and all of my tools. It's not quite big enough to squeeze a tube in there with the water bottle, but I feel it starts to get a little too heavier at that point, so like you I carry the tube on the bike. The shape of the pack allows it to fit close to my back and comfortably under a riding jersey which makes jersey pockets available for other stuff. It doesn't have a fancy wide waste band like the EVOCs, but it's easily adjustable on the ride and I've never felt it was uncomfortable for the amount of weight I'm carrying. Thanks again for your review.
I have the opposite problem with my 36" belly - I'm at the near end of the belt adjustment range! The Pro is my first belt pack, and I'm still deciding if I like it or not, less than 10 rides with it so far. Still working on deciding on just where to place it, tightness and how it sits on pant's zippers and fasteners (I'm winter riding now so It's lots of layers ). The linked zippers is really easy to open close on rides as the 'handle' is easy to reach while riding and zip up the pack on the fly.
Got the Pro version over a year ago, its so good, never lost a bottle and the waits band is quite comfy. I’ve also tried the level below, but that waist band was bugging me.
I run an Osprey talon 6. Had it for about 3 yrs now. Showing some signs of age, but still going strong. Summers here in Australia are just too hot for full packs. So a hip pack is perfect. I like the Evoc Hip pack pro 3L, it would be the perfect replacement for my ageing Talon.
This is great! I'm thinking of changing to hippack but I feel there are not a lot of options for small frame people, everything looks so bulky. Yes, I love when you review things specially because we are similar size (except I am 5'1")
Great Reviews. I purchased the Lab Austere per recommendation of Mtn Bike Yumyum this winter, and I’m excited to try it out. I tried the larger hip pack but didn’t like the lower back fatigue it gave me.
Great review! Love hip packs. I use a camelbak flow. It’s a smaller pack with one bottle holder good for 2 ish hour rides. The last bigger one you reviewed would be my next upgrade. Keep up the great videos love your channel.
Hi, great review thankyou. I’ve just ordered the pro 3l. Btw, what is the name of that small bike frame bag? I’m looking for something just like it for storing tools. I’d love to see you do a deep dive review on those kinds of bags.
I've been thinking about a hip pack... some day I'll be able to go into stores to try one. I'm not sure about carrying a pump in one across your back. Think about where it is in relation to your spine should you do an OTB and land on the pack.
Good review, I have been thinking about going back to a hip pack. I had one when I first got into Mtn biking in the early 90's. One tip for you on cleaning your water bladder: Hot water and a couple Efferdent denture cleaning tablets. Add more for larger sized bladders and let them sit overnight, then rinse in the morning.
@@dustybettymtb Oh, after filling the bladder, run some through the drinking tube every 30 or so minutes to help freshen up it also. I usually do it three to four times before I go to bed, then rinse everything in the morning.
I had an evoc pac, hated it.kept falling off especially when it gets bumpy since it only has cinch on 1 side. Replaced it with an osprey that you can cinch on both sides.
great video!! yes i like you doing hip packs reviews!! i'm short and fat and looking for a hip packs or backpack.. have a good day and afternoon. i hope all is well.
i find if i have i to far up it doesn't really , but it gives me a funny feeling if i push hard on the way up , i run my hippack on my hipbones and i dont even notice either of my hippacks , the evoc 1l in sand or the 3l pro in grey/red and they are the best in my opinion even if they are a bit 🤑
I have 2 water bottles on my bike and for a 2 to 3 hour ride in summer it's just about enough but I still have to ration on the way back. So looking for a bladder system, but a large back pack would make me sweat. Would rather they allowed 2 or maybe 2.5l but I guess then why bother buying their hydration backpacks
I hear there’s a problem with a bigger rider as well, if it’s maxing out at a 34 for a guy, I’m a 36, wanted to buy, but not sure if the belt is big enough
For me, it just has to do with capacity. If I don't need a ton of space for my ride, I'll take the hit pack because it covers less of my back. It's less sweaty and more comfortable having the weight down low. If I'm going on a longer half or full day ride and I need more capacity for water food etc, that's when I reach for my backpack.

The type of review i was looking for the evoc line. Thorough!

My wife would benefit from using the bigger one on our casual ebike rides. Great review.

I have the 3L evoc and absolutely love and recc. To everyone. Bit on the pricey side but I quickly found out that it is worth it!

Yes, I love when you review things specially because we are similar size (except I am 5'1")
What is that frame bag on the bike behind you that is a really nice out of the way design.
Just bought Evoc Pro 3L ;) ... 5'11" I think it will be spot-on.

Awesome review Tess! Super helpful!
The 1L looks like it'd be great for Gravel Cycling. I'm using a cheap Amazon back at the moment but I'll be looking at the 1L this summer.
Great review. I love my evoc pack. I run a Dueter hip pack. I have one summer season on it and love it
Thank you for sharing. This helps a lot. Side question, do you have a video about nutrition for mountain biking?
I just got the pro and it looks nice and probably the best one u can get now
Hi, great review thankyou. I’ve just ordered the pro 3l.
Btw, what is the name of that small bike frame bag? I’m looking for something just like it for storing tools. I’d love to see you do a deep dive review on those kinds of bags.
It's the evoc multi-frame pack. I picked mine up from competitive cyclist. I love it! I've used it on like six different bikes now.
Brill, thankyou@@dustybettymtb I placed an order for the same one you have.
You can take off a plastic detail which holds webbing, and win 2 inches, and fitting a bag will become easier
I prefer a Evoc stage 6 liter backpack which will protect my back (column) in case I fall.
Thanks for the review. Very Helpful! 👍
You can tell you are putting in the miles on the bike. Tan arms and white hands lol. Good video. I'm researching hip packs myself

great video , fun fact I also use the evoc hip pouch 1 L and love it and carry the same lyzne pump in the back
hi there ,can u wear the 1l version across the back by clipping the belt diagonally on a shoulder?
great video!! yes i like you doing hip packs reviews!! i'm short and fat and looking for a hip packs or backpack.. have a good day and afternoon. i hope all is well.
I wonder if it interferes with the saddle or riding in general? I'm tempted to get one. I'm currently using a USWE backpack which I like.
Nice! I was just thinking about getting a hip pack!
thanks for the review - why waist pack over backpack? also, does waist pack affect diaphragm breathing?
i find if i have i to far up it doesn't really , but it gives me a funny feeling if i push hard on the way up , i run my hippack on my hipbones and i dont even notice either of my hippacks , the evoc 1l in sand or the 3l pro in grey/red and they are the best in my opinion even if they are a bit 🤑
@Dusty Betty Hey what frame pack is on your bike? Thanks.
On the race pro, with full bladder could you fit a wind breaker and couple of lights?
Hello i have a largo ripley, wondering what size is your evoc frame bag. I like the color and don't know which size i should get
Mine is a size small frame and a size small frame bag.
I have 2 water bottles on my bike and for a 2 to 3 hour ride in summer it's just about enough but I still have to ration on the way back. So looking for a bladder system, but a large back pack would make me sweat.

I just got mine today. I am between a 36 pant and 38. It fits me fine. I think I am at the max range, so anyone bigger than a 38 would be too big.
This was really helpful, thanks!
Small is beautiful when it comes to cycling 🚴♀️
So when do you go with a hip pack and when with a backpack?

'Covid belly' took my narrowest part of the waist :/ Now I have to wear fanny packs on the side or I wind up setting on them.
What size Evoc Multi Frame Pack is on your bike?
Sorry Tess, saw that you mentioned it was a small further down the post
This helped, thanks!
❤😢no tu oranžové už nedělají 😢
Who is Betty??
Betty is the last name of her daughter Dusty. Hope this helps!
@13:05 humble brag🙂
I have EVOC Hip Pack Pro 3
Centre bottle contains my juice
Left side bottle contains extra water
Right side bottle contains post ride booze
