@@wellagreyas far as I know, the BTS (operator) and the BMA (owner) couldn't decide on how should fares be set for Khu Khot-Mo Chit and Bearing-Kheha as BTS's proposed fares are too high for customers (it would cost 104 Baht for the whole route) so they just didn't charge any fares until they could decided on how should fares be charged.

On my one and only visit to Bangkok in 96 I remembered seeing all the concrete pylons for the BTS and thinking that there was no way it was ever going to be completed. This is a credit to the Thais as they now have a better public transport system than a lot of western cities. I love going over your videos and finding all the locations on the map.

There are other candidates for best metro system in Asia like Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo, etc, (Been on the metros in HK, Bangkok, Tokyo, Singapore - never done Seoul, but the map looks ridiculous...)

I love the BTS, it's very nostalgic for me as an international student who grew up in Bangkok. I started using it by myself when I was 14 to visit friends and go to malls on the weekends. I really feel it was the start of my independence and the centre of my adolescent life. Each station reminds me of memories and people who used to live there. It was lovely to remind myself of these while watching your video 😊 I revisited Thailand this year and I can't believe how big the Sukhumvit line is now!! Your videos make me homesick, at the same time, they show me so much I haven't seen. It's been really helpful during my most recent trip, so thank you! 🙏🇹🇭😊

Thanks for another brilliant video, Pat. I love your work. Learning so much about the city I love. I am retired and recently started living in Pu Chao. One of the things I love doing is jumping on the Skytrain (free journey from Pu Chao) and going down to Paknam to watch the ships go by. Become a bit of a hobby as you can track them on shipping websites live as they go by and it tells you where the have come from, destination and cargo. As a South East Londoner, the bend on the river reminds me of a much larger version of the Thames viewed from Greenwich Pier area. Mind you, you can’t get the delicious grilled squid on a stick by Greenwich Pier!

Wow Pat, you have put so much time and effort into making this extraordinary documentary of the BTS Sukhumvit Line.
Your depth of knowledge and insight is amazing, along with your intelligent commentary and choice of music.
You also frequently let the trains themselves do the talking, with their clickety-click and occasional screeching... all very atmospheric!
It's actually a real 'feel-good' and 'sit-back-and-enjoy' type of film, with the pace and the stunning views and camera angles that you achieve.
I first visited Bangkok in 1989 when of course there was no Skytrain in sight - all traffic went on the chaotic roads!
On subsequent visits I saw the beginnings of the BTS superstructure reaching up to the sky, and my initial thoughts were that it was going to ruin the atmosphere and the look of the city. But now, of course, the city could not manage without it and we all admire the ingenuity, the engineering and the sheer bravery of having the foresight to overcome all the difficulties.
I will be in Bangkok in February as part of another visit to the country. Seeing your video makes me look forward so much to seeing the city again, and on my return home I know that the video will make me reminisce with fondness of my time spent there.
Thank you for making this great contribution to our appreciation and understanding of this amazing capital city.

7:43 If you single frame back and forth a bit here (< and > keys) you can get a glimpse of very neatly maintained buildings and gardens. So different to the general chaos of Bangkok suburbs.
11:19 The famous Elephant Building. Unique style.
11:58 How did you get that nice view? I like the mini Disneyland castle in the middle of the park. I wonder what that is about.
19:09 Ratchathewi BTS station has a bridge to the Asia Hotel located next to the station. This was the hotel I stayed in on my very first visit to Bangkok almost 10 years ago. Time flies!
22:39 You were looking out the wrong window. 😜
34:16 Bearing used to be the end of the line for BTS. My first Thai "love" had a very basic room near here down Soi 105 Thanon Lasalle which always sounded mysteriously French for some reason.
38:49 You must have shot these video segments on different days because the times on the station clocks are all over the place. Huge effort on your part!!!

Very interesting to watch. The video doesn't mention that Chit Lom station allows a pleasant stroll down either Soi Lang Suan or Soi Ton Son to famous Lumphini Park. On the subject of parks, I disagree that Chatuchak park ( Mor Chit station ) is good for a "Sunday afternoon stroll". It is far better in the mornings, before it gets hot. And in any case, at weekends the park is mobbed. You're better off choosing a weekday morning. At Asok station, don't forget that this is the interchange with the much more extensive and better value MRT subway system. Nana station has access to Bumrungrad hospital and is popular with those coming from far and wide for medical procedures - it is definitely not simply a 'sex tourist' area. For example, from Nana station ( and Asok station ) you can now easily walk down to the new forest park and adjoining Benjakitti Park. One of the largest and greenest recreational areas in the whole city and should not be missed if you visit. Finally, there are foreigners everywhere in Bangkok. Don't be afraid of them. Many of us try to be helpful.

True that there other things to Nana and Asok than sex tourists. But Pat's point-and I have witnessed this so many times- is that unsuspecting family oriented tourists get a hotel in this area on their two nights in BKK before heading to the islands and they end up with the idea that all Bangkok is sleaze and dirty streets. Lumpini and Benjakitti can be easily accessed staying in a hotel for example in Silom and having a completely different experience.

"Get yourself here and bring a camera".... funnily enough that was my plan until a week ago! I had booked at the Asia Hotel, which has a walkway stright to the Ratchathewi station, very handy with a suitcase, and as you said the Airport Link is close by, handy for nipping out to Suvarnabhumi for a bit of plane spotting...... Good vid, i bet this took a bit of putting together.....

This was much more than just an awesome episode, it was an awesome ride! Several things come to mind such as how far and remote that first stop felt at the beginning of the episode, just how big Bangkok actually is, and just how impressive the BTS is! I remember Sukhumvit back in 1993 before the BTS and then when they were just beginning to erect the pillars in 1995. I loved the “elevator lines” track played at 30:02. Excellent work once again Pat!

    • @BangkokPat

Thanks Scott, had to squeeze that track in somewhere and I was a bit stuck so I added it at the end as well. It's a classic on the channel! The 54km end to end is definitely a sign of how far Bangkok has come as a city and how far it will go too! BTW Scott I've tried send you email but it keeps bouncing back to me with 'unable to send'

Nice 1 m8, Royal Thai Navy and the Royal Thai Air Force Museums are on the list. Been on [I think] the train 2011 and 2013. The views Amazing. Some of my favorites are the roof top gardens. Canals are great, tail boats are noisy. If your wanted a look in some of these Military places, maybe join as a cutluncher [part time], most countries have them. One night a week, 2 weekends a year plus a Camp, free food an accommodation. Your right, Nana gave me a headache when the company execs picked us up at the airport and we'd been flying all 9 hours from Aus. Some memories some new sights, thanks m8

Great video Pat. Wonderful shots of the BTS and the city. Lots of fascinating facts to boot. Although my stay in BKK will be all to brief later this month, as I travel on to Tokyo. I remember that the BTS only went as far as Mo Chit a few years ago and I got off to get to Mo Chit bus station but got lost in the process! Ekkamai is brilliant for Japanese food in that shopping centre before you hop on the bus to Pattaya! Love some of the all over ads on those BTS trains although they often cover the windows denying you of a view from inside the train. Also noted new rolling stock with very attractive front lights etc.

Great video Pat! I love the Skytrain so this was like catnip for me. Funnily enough for my final day on my recent holiday to Thailand a couple of weeks ago I did a similar journey along the Sukhumvit line.
Firstly I was curious to see the progress of the Pink and Yellow lines where they intersect (at Wat Phra Sri Mahathat and Samrong respectively). They do seem nearly finished so hopefully they are up and running by the time of my next trip.
Secondly I wanted to explore around a few stations I hadn't been to yet. Managed to get pleasingly lost somewhere around Bang Chak and ended up getting a riverboat down the Klong San Saep back to my hotel just in time to start packing. Missing the place already...
