  • Gold Circle was a discount department store chain based in Ohio. Founded in 1967, it was a division of Federated Department Stores with 76 stores when the chain was sold and dismantled in 1988. This is a viewer suggested video.

I grew up in Dayton, Ohio and I remember my parents taking me to shop at Gold Circle. I used to hang out in their music section.

My god, I could talk all day about the memories.....I'm 49 now, I got all of my Kenner Star Wars toys there , Gi Joe, I remember every inch of what one location was like and after years later , it turned into toys r us, I walked through it and it was so weird, I remember where everything use to be! I remember a tiny cafeteria in the back that sold these amazing French fries , my first records I bought with my own money were from there , Madonna Like A Virgin! I remember the men's department as I got older and I could buy my own clothing , I use to think I was such a player picking out my hang ten and brut bikini briefs ... I remember that concession stand that you'd smell entering at the end of the cash resisters ... popcorn and cherry slushee's, they had a brachs pick a mix area, I won a huge Xmas stocking one year after picking the right number out of a fishbowl when I bought a slushee the candy machines had stickers in those plastic bubbles that would come out when you'd put a quarter in... we had s upper parking level on this one and me and my brother loved going up and down in the elevator!!!!

You would be talking about the store on Glenway Ave. in Cincinnati. Loved it when my mom parked on the roof. I remember my mom going there when they had their Dollar Days sales and stocking up. To this day I miss that store. Gold Circle was the best. The good old days!

I remember wanting to buy makeup and perfume from these stores. I loved them. But I was very young. The prices were too high for our family. Going there was a special treat. I didn’t know that they lasted only til ‘88.

I bought my first LP at Gold Circle in Evendale OH in the early 1980s: Business As Usual by Men at Work.
My family shopped there often, especially during back-to-school season, back when there were no pre-washed jeans. You bought the new, cardboard-stiff jeans in the fall, wore them all year to break them in, then cut them off in the summer for shorts.
    Man am I old now.

I vaguely remember Gold Circle. There was one in Springdale, Ohio (across from Tri-County Mall) and that is the one we always went to. Since they closed in 1988, I was only 4 at the time, and though I don't remember too much about the inside of the store, I remember exactly where the Springdale store was... which was the same plaza as Toys R Us and Service Merchandise. Caddy-corner to that plaza was another shopping plaza with Camelot Music and Zayre.
I haven't been in that area for a few years now, but as recently as 2019, the Kemper Road entrance immediately adjacent to the Gold Circle store still had the entrance and exit signs intact and in good shape.

Yessss!!! The popcorn! I only have the vaguest memories of Gold Circle and the smell of the popcorn is the most vivid. Every time I walk into a Target and smell the popcorn there I'm reminded of all those childhood trips to "the city."

Absolutely delighted to find a video on this store, I remember quite fondly my mom taking me to one when I was a child. One of my earliest clear memories of visiting the store at night, and seeing the ‘gold circle’ logo there. I can’t really recall if I got anything from there, but I do recall a bottle of some kind of talcum powder with a Gold Circle price sticker on it that was in our linen closest for DECADES.😅 I wish I could recall the interior, I remember it better when it became a ‘Hills’, and then a ‘Caldor’, though the layouts were changed to fit the different stores themes. This one was at the ‘Greece towne mall ‘ in NY, which later became the ‘Greece ridge mall’. The area the stores occupied eventually became a movie theatre in the mid 90’s after Caldor left, and it’s been that ever since.

I remember going to a Gold Circle in Charlotte NC back in the '80s. It wasn't open for long at all, maybe a couple months. Next thing I knew, it was a Target (that was the first Target I ever saw). I mentioned Gold Circle to my family a couple times over the years, but no one remembers it.
