I took his 3 month course some years ago when he was in VA beach, VA. He's incredible. Teaching how to properly use the correct tools to set beautiful stones. Would love to see him again some day.
Great clear explanation of good support to the cutting point. A tiny tripod of finger tip control puts the cutting point of the burr exactly where you want it. Thank you, great teaching of a practical skill.
Thanks Blain! Everything that you mentioned about the burs wrapping around the prongs has definitely happened to me ruining several practice pieces that I purchased just for this reason! Your advice has helped me immensely! I have to admit, like the many that you mentioned, I too was a bit freaked out about having my finger so close to the spinning, sharp bur! But, I’m still here… all fingers accounted for, no scars to tell war stories about! Just stunning pieces that I can now attribute to your great video! Again, thank you! This is an amazing video and I recommend it to anyone who is having the same problem!
Thank you and Rio Grande. Great tips to help me overcome many of the mistakes I've been frustrated with. Love Rio Grande products and these tutorials take it all to great heights.
Thank you. I'm self teaching. And learned so much in this video. I'm trying to learn cutting a shelf for oval and pear shaped faceted gemstone bezel settings. If I am cutting a shelf in an oval, say, do I go in the direction of the rotation the burr, or the opposite. Seems the same direction makes it feels easier, but more likely to slid off??? Any tips? Thanks again, and smile!! You're helping so many! Mimi
Hi, +huskyfluffy! Our Jewelry Tech Team applies pressure in the opposite direction of the rotation. Otherwise, the bur tends to run away and it's more likely to slide off. Let us know if we can provide more information!
:) Dentistry 101! as a dentist, new to working with metal, I am shocked to see so many jewelry workers use a palm grasp with handpiece and don't know how to use their fingers for resting point, fulcrum and connection! Thanks for this video
I love living in Albuquerque, just 15 minutes away from Rio Grande, Should drive right on down and take some classes sometime, i go their often to pick up supplies. Great people.

Hello Edrei, Thanks for your question. The exact burr shown here is not identifiable, but you can see our selection online here: www.riogrande.com/search/go?w=burr Hope this helps!
Hi Chico, Thanks for watching. Rio does sell a couple of different training video sets from Blaine. You might be interested in them and can find them here: www.riogrande.com/search?q=blaine+lewis+dvd&c=&t=1&pageSize=32 Thanks again for watching!
Am I the only person who burns their finger on the collet housing of the #30 hand piece while trying to hold the burr correctly? Maybe I need to switch to a quick-change hand piece since it not as big around.
Common the middle finger do not go foward because you can't hold a shaft only with the thumb and index. By reflex the middle finger will hold the shaft just like the other ones. Nobody old a shaft with two fingers.

You are a wonderful teacher. I appreciate the close up clear view of the ring and the angles of the bur and the cuts.
Very useful technique demonstrated there. I’ll remember this. Thanks. The professionals always make it look easy.

Please give a link for that black swivel device that holds the ring.
Thank you in advance.
What hand piece and flex shaft is that your using? I noticed the hose(?) going from the hand piece to the motor is smaller and coiled.
Same been searching comments for that answer u can call them in previous videos mark mentioned a number I might just call lol

Hello, where is Rio Grande?
Edrei in abq, NM
Helpful!
How are you not cutting a divot in your finger by touching the back of that rotating burr?
THank you. What size Hart bur were you using? What size would be good to buy.
Hi there! That setting looks like about a 1carat setting so the bur is likely about 4mm.
Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!
How does the bur not cut the finger?
what kind of micromotor have Blaine on this video I wanna buy it

Hi friend, what is the name of this strawberry you use? Much obliged.
Hello Edrei, Thanks for your question. The exact burr shown here is not identifiable, but you can see our selection online here: www.riogrande.com/search/go?w=burr
Hope this helps!
the only burrs I saw him use was first a setting burr then a heart burr.
You are a good teacher.
Hi Linda, Thanks for commenting! Blaine is an amazing teacher. We're so fortunate to work with him.
Wow great vids! I got a high recommendation from an alumni to take a course with Blaine, and I can understand why.
Where are those practice brass solitaire rings available?
Hi Allen, Thanks for asking! We carry practice settings designed by Blaine: bit.ly/2KTm1RI. Hope this helps!

This item is a physical DVD set. Thanks for asking!
Excellent! Thank you!
You are welcome!
Doesn't your middle finger get hot when it has contact with the spinning bur?
This was a great video. this was how I was tought when I was working with a jeweler.
Great lesson!
Thanks, James! Our employees and students find that Blaine's tips on hand positioning make a big difference. Glad you found the video helpful!
so, this freaks me out a bit--does the friction from the bur shaft not burn your finger?
Hey, +Meghan Langley! You use a little bur life on your finger it prevents the friction from burning your finger. Works like a charm. :)
+Rio Grande okay awesome thank you! That is what I would have tried but good to have confirmed! looking forward to trying my hand at tube setting
Let us know how it goes for you! :)
do you make lessons or just sell tools?
Jewelers are tough, Meghan.

powers1217 this happens to me too. I was hoping for more on how to hold the #30 correctly.
can you teach me sir!
HOW NICE.
4mm Thanks so much.

What if people don't have the luxury of owning a grs benchmate, working vertically to their work is the only option they have
The mellow frost compellingly switch because brother utrastructurally blind about a rabid gram. abashed, finicky crayon
