Mudlarking the River Thames - My Best Ever Mudlarking Finds so far this year (June 2021)

- Опубліковано 19 чер 2021
- I recently had the best ever mudlarking outing on a particularly low tide on the River Thames in London. From the moment I walked down onto the foreshore I spotted a special something staring up at me through the mud! And then it just went on from there. Coins, the LONGEST pipe ever and a really curious little token which I had great fun researching.
I hope you enjoy accompanying me virtually on this special mudlarking outing!
If you are tempted to try mudlarking, then you do need a permit from the Port of London Authority. You can find out all the info on their website here:-

Maybe you'd be a bit grumpy if you'd been lying on your back in the mud staring at the sky for 300 years! 😉 Excellent video as usual.
@@davidprovan2250 How true! 😂🤣
@@davidprovan2250 ha ha yes good point. And what a very different world he has emerged into from the last one he saw
@@nicolawhitemudlark I'm sure they will all cheer up soon in the warm and dry!
Nicola I wanted to bring your attention to a "Roman" find that you missed in your video - I have taken a screenshot and highlighted it ibb.co/pK10x6m hopefully you can go back and recover it since it is near that big chain and should be easy to find again.
11:59 Picture an excited Mudlark 300 years from now "Oooh it's a shopping trolley! If we wipe off the handle we can tell which supermarket it came from!" Awesome video as always Nicola, that intact clay pipe was really special.
Feet Up,Eating A Cornish Pasty. And Watching You Exploring The Thames. Brilliant !!!!!!!!
so glad you're enjoying Roger xx
It wouldn’t surprise me if Nicole found Amelia Earheart’s plane some day.
absolutely!
She just might!
Ageed
Longest pipe I have ever seen!
We had a garage sale and had stacked a bunch of boxes full of broken glass and ceramic objects. An artist came by and took them off our hands. To us, it was trash; to her, it was treasure!
That's often the way it is! Well done for giving it away

He is grumpy because the wine/beer is inside he is on the outside. When the wine is gone it's a witches bottle. Poor man I'm happy you brought him home. Great finds thanks Nicola
Thank you x
Every time you shake things in the water to clean it off, I start shaking my phone… as though that’s going to help get it cleaner!! Lol!
I once worked at a bank with a change counter and one of my duties was to tend to it by taking out full bags of coins and removing (and appropriating, because no one said I couldn’t) objects that weren’t modern American currency from a catch at the bottom. I found wonderful things in there, including an American Civil War-era two penny piece counterstamped with the name T. L. Fletcher. It’s one of the neatest things in my collection and this video reminded me that I have it!
Nicola…thank you for being on UA-cam. I don’t sleep well, so I watch you usually late at night when the house is quiet. I appreciate having you to be with me.
Hi Maria, I'm so glad you enjoy them. Sending you love. Nicola ❤️

Nic, you are living art. Full of grace, beauty and most importantly wisdom.
Thank you for doing these great Videos for us.
Thanks John. That is so very kind of you xx
If Nicola finds the crown jewels next it will pale in comparison to that pipe with the very long stem which caused her to lapse into raptures of pure pipe ecstasy . To us her fans we know the feeling it happens when Nicola posts a new vlog. Another fun filled blog with a record length pipe then Nicola looking very summery as she sends greetings to young Archie another fan in Singapore" .Hi Archie History is fun no matter where you are.is the Tiger Balm gardens still there? Thanks Nicola so good to see you ,take care Cheers from Canada XX
Thanks Ralph xx
Your have me inspired to take a trip from Las Vegas to London just to mudlark! My ex bf lives in Croydon. We're still great friends and when I told him about you and wish I'd known about mudlarking when I used to visit him 20 yrs ago, he knew who you were because he goes to hear your son's band quite a bit! Small world!
The way you talk sometimes, especially at the start of this one, really reminded me of the type of random programmes my teacher would put on in infant school when they rolled the TV in for TV time. What fun and carefree times 🙂
Haha I remember those well. I hope that's a compliment 😀
@@nicolawhitemudlark Certainly a compliment, I very much enjoyed this one! Thank you 🙏🏼
Absolutely nothing on TV beats this. How.lovely is this! Discovering historical items off the thames. The history Channel wishes they could be this original. 🧡🧡🧡🧡
Thank you ❤️
If you get London Live channel on your Freeview then this channel is on TV.
I have a Harper’s Magazine from 1884 with Pears soap advertisements in it. That’s so cool that you found a token!
Hi Nicola , still find it amazing that something as fragile as a pipe can lay in the mud and clutter of the Thames and stay intact, another amazing video 🌹❤️
me too! incredible really when you think about all the mudlarks that have walked over that pipe!
Ahh, perfect Sunday with Nicola!
Good day...!. hi from the Puget Sound.
I’ve been spending the week on the beach myself in one of the first settlements in the Pacific Northwest but I’ve only found fresh air and sunshine
That pipe laid in the mud unbroken for almost 300 years! Amazing.
Aw, thank you Nicola for going out of your way to reunite that baby ducking with its mom. Your history finds are always amazing but there is nothing more precious than someone making a positive difference in the world they live in here and now. We need more people like you!
Thanks Robin xx
That pipe extraction was crazy! It's been a while since you've had a big one like that !!
You're right!!
Good morning. ☕
My wife & I really enjoy you channel. We watch you in the morning over coffee. You make our morning a little bit more special.
Thank you & God bless. 💞
Hi Stanley, Im so glad that you both enjoy the channel. Sending you both much love from London xx
I'm surprised UA-cam didn't censor what's written on your counter stamped coin 😲Great video,cheers Nicola🍻
And now it will
If that was written long ago people's spelling wasn't that great. You could look at it as, count, not what your suggesting.
I don't get it, all it said was Pears soap??
@@suzettecalleja3122 apparently it was from WW2 and was stamped with abbreviation of C Unit 1914.
I COULD LISTEN TO THIS LADYS VOICE ALL NIGHT RELAXING. PLUS GREAT HISTORY KNOWLEDGE AND FINDS, LOTS OF SMOKER'S ABOUT PIPES.,
A Sunday afternoon w. Nic!
- beautiful swans ☀️🦢 and a lost/found duckling! 🦆
Thát, was (still) some pipe!! 😲😉
Love an eclectic clean-up 🥰
Hello from Denmark 🌸🌱
So glad the duckling was reunited with its mum. Great work, and some great finds on the foreshore too! Loved it!
Wonderful to see! I think the Pears Soap coin is my favourite item 😊
Awwww, the swans and their cygnets. So beautiful
Ref. Counter-stamped coins: My brother served in Northern Ireland during the 1970’s and when home on leave he would bring back coins which had been stamped with the initials of the various paramilitary organisations. The squaddies would collect them as souvenirs.
So interesting. I wonder if a soldier made mine
Chuckle! There are just so Many things peeking out of the lovely Thames mud!
i love how the face seems to come to life as it is uncovered in the mud - imagine if the Bartmann could speak - what would he say ?
All hail Nicola, queen of mudlarks and pipe extractor extraordinaire. 😍 You are much loved🤘and appreciated🥰
So many lovelies. Some never before known to us all these years on. It must be so exciting to wonder what the Old Father has in store, what he's willing to share! But not too much because he wants you back and again!❤
Great finds Nicola 😊 !!! Nice clay pipes especially the very long one & I loved your friend's tiny clay pipe !!! Nice coins. Love the Bertmann bottle neck with the grumpy man's face !!! When you put him with the other 3 grumpy men faces I said "they are the Bertmann Brothers" !!! That was so sweet & darling at the end of your video of you holding that beautiful baby duck & was able to find it's mom & I absolutely loved that you named him Elvis !!! Elvis has been my favorite singer since I was a little girl around 8 years old !!! Really enjoyed your video Nicola !!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️🙂
First, thanks so much for all the lovely footage of water babies, Adorable. What wonderful finds, I love the long pipe but the Bartman face is my favorite, Thanks Nicola.
Thanks Debbie I also love that bartmann face x
I love the coins.old tokens. Yes!
I am so pleased for you for your pipe find- I found myself holding my breath as you pulled it out- whispering don’t break, don’t break. So happy for you
Nothing like Nicola's excitement about a long pipe!
Hi Nicola, always happy to see you. Wow, what a long stemmed pipe. Surprise! Enjoyed watching ! Keep up these wonderful videos. Take care, Joyce🇺🇸. ARROW *🎱. ❤️.
Another great video. I couldn’t believe it when the pipe kept going. Thank you!
me neither!!
Just found this channel last night. I'm absolutely amazed! I've combed beaches forever, all over the U.S and never found anything but shells! I'm addicted now after seeing the chain mall, here in the united states' I don't think we even have dirt that old- fascinating!😀
Welcome Michelle!
I suppose it depends on where you look or what you find interesting. I've lived all over Canada and several parts throughout the United States and have gone digging around rivers and shorelines and have found some pretty interesting things. Coins from prior to the creation of the United States, pottery with decorative motifs that likely date to pre-European settlement, Red Jasper and Turquoise that too probably dates prior to European settlement of North America. I was also with a friend in New Mexico about a decade ago and he found Spanish sword tip that likely belonged to conquistadors from expeditions to the area by Chamuscado or Rodríguez from 1581-1582.
Hi Nic’, how joyful would it be to find a whole Bartmann jug? Has anyone ever found one on the Thames foreshore? I would love to have one! I also loved watching the pipe extraction, it went on forever. Also, you made me salivate with those gorgeous pies you made on Simons video? I have to make some now! Good job. Great video! Thank you.😀
Hi Lynne! well I would love to find a whole one. Someone I know has found one that was almost intact! And actually I have found a mini one, but with no face. As for the pies. My mum's recipe. They were delicious. Just some shortcrust pastry with a tin of steak. wonderful!! xx
Bartmann jug? I believe you can find one of those at 742 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield.
Im in the states and adore your channel. Followed for years now. Thank you Nic!.
Thank you ❤️
Happy for your long stemmed pipe find! I didn’t know they came that long.
They came longer
Her sheer joy was so great!
Look up Churchwarden pipe!
yes indeed! they even come longer!
@@nicolawhitemudlark lol I'm watching you and si find a pipe bowl as you replied
The very small pipe reminds me of a pipe made from a traditional pastry from Germany called Weckmänner o. Stutenkerle
Thank you! I shall look that up
I love pears soap, beautiful find. The pipe was awesome Nic, enjoy your week and yes the sun is shining today.🇨🇦🐘🍁❤
Thanks Marion. Hope you're doing well. love Nicola x
Oh my goodness that was the most fantastic pipe find !!!
Hiya Nicola,
Great work with Elvis the not so ugly duckling. I would think we would have a sour expression too if we were full of beer or wine, but enjoyed not one drop!
I love your fish-art, very brave of you, brave? Well, it takes a lot of bottle!!! Boom-Boom!
It's wonderful that you don't stop with the finding but look for the history behind the find too.
Stay safe, Steve...
Thanks Steve xx
Looks more like a camel to me,lol!
Had to shield my cats eyes when you showed that coin with er..C. Unt on it!
Thanks! yes, you are one hundred percent correct on the camel!
The long straw kept coming :) wow
Oh my, what a lovely long pipe! The Bellarmine/Bartmann face/bottle neck is a beautiful find Nicola and well done for reuniting Elvis the duckling with it's mother too xx
That was definitely a hold you breath moment as you extracted the pipe. Congratulations !
Oh WOW my favorite pipe whisperer! That is an amazing pipe! And Bartman. Love your adventures. Here in Florida, USA
Thrilled to be so early to view this video! Excellent finds! I cherish your beautiful shadow box art piece I was fortunate enough to receive almost a year ago. ATB.
Thanks so much Erin xx
Nicola you started agin with some lovely music and the swans and cygnets and others well watched. A wide variety of objects for you and us to enjoy, another Sunday evening watching you getting muddy and me staying in the dry Ha Ha.🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️🧴
I love the Bartman carving and the clever use of space on the bottle. Gorgeous finds.
For your long pipes, you could try taking a styrofoam pool noodle and cutting it to fit a little longer than a complete pipe. Then slitting One side of the new noodle piece lengthwise to form a tube that would wrap around and protect a pipe while it is still in your bag. ???
great idea!
I think it’s a brilliant idea!
@pisswobble, something you use in a swimming pool to float, that's made from Styrofoam in the shape of a huge noodle, with a hollow middle.
I think that pulling a long pipe like that out of the mud must be a glorious experience. :-) Love the history behind the Pears Soap coin, thanks for researching it. Love the collabs, so glad you are able to get out to enjoy them.
I really appreciate the history lessons with mudlarking.
Another tummy full of historical data. Thanks a million Nicola. Keep up the good work.
I so enjoy watching you mudlarking. I live in Western Colorado, we are currently enduring forest fires. Every night I go to bed smelling campfire in the middle of the suburban sprawl. Please wish for us to have some soaking rain we are in the midst of drought. Thank you so much for showing us the foreshore.
Hello! so sorry to hear that. I do hope you have lots of rain soon. stay safe xx
I'm always happy when you find something exciting to show us!
Always look forward to Sunday afternoon when I can sit down and watch you and Simon. Wonderful finds.
Great to see nature doing so well in London. Great finds to be found.
As usual a delightful excursion and fun finds. The Pear Soup history was intriguing!!
Wow some incredible finds. I can’t believe those pipes, they are so long!! It’s so fascinating how they’ve survived intact all those years. Thank you for another amazing video 👍
So many great finds! Congratulations Nic!!
Thank you so much for saving that little duckling.
It’s so enjoyable when you ask us to see what you see in the mud - And what a great collection this time - And so much knowledge regarding the Pears Soap too + Well done Nichola you are the princess of the foreshore and make every video a pleasure to watch x
Don’t even joke about not making anymore videos. I would be very upset as yours are the best.
Oh man, the giant pipe was awesome.
Bet you were chuffed. The bartman was exciting as well. Enjoyed your “live” last week.
Always makes my day to watch your vids. Thanks so much. I love the sights and sounds as much as the finds. Wonderful!
Fascinating as ever.
So much fun! Great history lesson and lovely finds! Love your tenderness that shines through!🌝

A rainy evening here in Galway Ireland, but enjoying going through the Thames finds with you. Thanks for the videos.
So when it comes to clay pipes, size matters ;) great job as always.
Thank you so much for showing us your amazing finds!! 👍🙏🙏🙏
Doesn't get much better than finding that exquisite pipe intact! Congratulations! And your lovely Pears coin is very special. The Bartman faces make me smile - as grumpy as they are. Have a wonderful week Nicola!
As someone who grew up working in tobacco, I would love to know how much the genetics of the plant have been altered in the course of the last several hundred years. It would be interesting to see if there is any material left in the pipes that could be genetically tested to compare to modern strains of tobacco. Working tobacco is difficult, back-breaking, filthy work and so many men's fortunes were made on the slave labor required to raise it, it's a fascinating plant and history.
The economies of such states as Kentucky, Virginia and North Carolina were built upon tobacco plantation slavery.
@@mikejohnson515 If you haven't read about it, The Black Patch Tobacco Wars are an interesting part of U.S. history.
I've chopped tobacco on hot summer days in the Connecticut valley and there is nothing that burns as much when it gets on your skin and there is nothing that I've done since that is as hard to do work wise. At the end of the day we got to jug of water and a gallon of pickles. But what the hell I was a UMass student and needed money
@@1planters I started picking up leaves when I was 3 years old. We quit about 7 years ago, I guess that makes me have more than 4 decades working in it. We would have salted peanuts in a bottle of pepsi for an afternoon pick-me-up. I only miss the camaraderie of the neighbors who all came together every year to get the crop in the barn. Many a college student made their book money working for us in the fall.
@@deereating9267 Yes it was hot and itchy and sweaty but it was a fun job especially looking back over the ones I've had over the last 40 years including the six digit plus ones
Always great to see you Nicola. Awesome finds.
You're so amazing Nicola! I can't wait to see all the collaborations you talk of, but Si Finds' video today of you, once again, tackling the operation of a water vehicle! You're fearless and an inspiration! Loved the pipes today! Have a lovely week!
Thanks Julianne x
I am viewing from Texas and am always so excited to see your extravagant finds (i.e., that gorgeous pipe) and even the more everyday items. Your trips make my day! Many thanks for sharing.
I really absolutely loved the way you put in the after pic of the coins while the video played with the coins being found. Like a before and after cleaned up but together in the frame when you find it. I know it takes a lot to edit but I believe that would make your videos stand out from the rest. What A beautiful find, that pipe!!!!! Never seen one that intact before!!!!! Thank you for videoing these for us!!!!!! I want a metal detector so bad!!!! One day!!!!
I could see and smell the Pears Soap as well! Took me back to my childhood. Another enjoyable video Nicole. Thanks!
My favorite is the Bartmann face! So much personality 😊
Thank you for sharing that lovely experience !
Haven't commented in a while, but I always enjoy your posts, Nicola. How astounding that such a fragile, long pipe lasted, intact, in the foreshore mud, for centuries. So glad you liberated him from his precarious location. I had goosebumps, as you kept pulling and the pipe just kept going. FAB ! Also, your old, bearded man bottle neck. Thanks for letting us search the Thames shoreline with you. Fascinating.
Thank you ❤️😘
Wow!!! What terrific day you had...that pipe and the Bartman Man, too...just amazing! Congratulations, and I love that you helped little Elvis find his mother:)
thank you Nicola always enjoy your pastime
Thanks again Nicola. Lovely finds.
Wow, I never knew this kind of thing existed. Love the vid's! Just shows how much of the stuff in the waters is from our activity through the ages.
Make my day! Saving this for later this evening !
Thanks for a lovely squelch along the Thames.
How amazing that there’s treasure just all around🥰
What phenomenal finds! I actually gasped when you found the Bartman face.
