I was kinda in a knife fight , bout 20 years ago . on a job site an illegal alien working for a different crew pulled a fixed blade on me and acted like he intended to use it .
I hit him with a 4 foot metal level about 8 or 10 times , that I was using when he walked up talking shit .
I guess really I wasn't in a knife fight ....you know what they say , don't bring a knife to a level fight !
also I busted that dude up pretty bad , but he was at work the next day and never looked crossways at me after. I did have to buy a new level....

The guard is to keep you from sliding upand cutting your hand when you hit bone, which you almost always will without a guard. They collect blood at stabbings because the attacker cuts themselves so much.
Man, I love knives and have studied how to use them a long time, and I dread like hell ever using one on a person...they are so ...efficient. You are so right...it ain't the movies . But I wear my Bowie and my Izula neck knife just in case.

I prefer at least a bit of a guard on my personal protection knives: not as a blade catcher, but to keep my hand from sliding up the blade in case I thrust at something soft and squishy and hit something hard like bone. The Ground Combat Knife has a deep enough child to sort of act as a guard.

When in a knife fight, you want to follow these rules : 1) stab rather than slice 2) mobility and balance are key so DO NOT kick in a knife fight, doing so is a high risk/low reward thing 3) if your knife/reach is longer, you may try slicing their front hand/wrist/forearm 4) do not get into knife fights :)

Many escalations just don't need to happen.
People should control their ego, like they would control their dog starting to act aggressively to people passing by(which a good human would do anyway).
But if there's no way out, really no other option, yes , then it's justified.
But de-escalation would be best. Like telling a joke to that person. And then he's like, "what"?

The reason like combat knives or fighting knives used to be really big, was because it was at one time or so necessary. it's the thing that's left over from the Middle ages, when people kill each other with swords and clubs and things like that. so it makes sense that you don't need guards on your knives, and the knives would be much smaller than it was back then. If anything, and don't have anything really important to protect, just run away as fast as you can. It's not usually worth getting stabbed over

Steak knife, bread knife whatever you do not want to get cut. It does suck. Bad guys are predators and they go for the young, the old, the disabled and the like. The more risk you appear to present the less likely you will get attacked. Knives are biomechanical cutting tools to me as a self defense tool.. Reality is both people will be cut. Clay Allison was in a famous knife fight with a knife fighter. His opponent died and Clay was stuck and had a severe thigh cut. Clay when the guy refused to fight him with a pistol let the guy pick the weapon. Ballsy of old Clay but not real smart. Also, ironic the knife fighter lost to the gun fighter....in a knife fight. I have been threatened with a knife and had to get out of the way quickly, I have seen a knife drawn in a fight, and I dare say someone somewhere will tell you I may have erred myself at some time in my distant youth and maybe postured with a blade. I will say this though that you are right that most people who wield knives are if not cowards directly, in fear of something. I carry a big stick with antler points, I have sparred with it against short swords. Generally speaking it can create a zone of you do not want to go there. Chances of meeting a real life aggressor with a sword are practically nil, chances of meeting an aggressor with a knife way more probable, but seriously mate, would you pull a knife on me if I could jab you in the bollox and then your solar plexus at a comfortable distance? Or were you assuming that both those options weren't there when you mentioned it?
