  • Star Citizen just cruised past $700,000,000 in total funding and is well on it's way to a BILLION dollars raised... but how is it getting there and what will be the consequences of the game finally "releasing?"

    Meanwhile gacha games like Genshin impact reaching 1 billion in just six months (and that's without PC/Console revenue, only mobile). The key is obfuscating the money needed to get something with random chance mechanics and incredibly predatory business practices, if SC implemented a gacha system the funding would go through the roof, though they would have to add waifu skins for the ships or something. People refuse to look at actual comparison which there really isn't but if you look at runner ups that started with already established dev studios you have Duke Nukem forever was 10 years and was just a solo shoot em up, RD2 was 9 years and 300mil ish with only solo until the remaster with coop, GTA5 now with gta6 over 10 in development already, skull and bones is like 11ish years and launched as a flop, SS kill the justice league was 10yr development and was a flop, the list goes on and on of well established AAA studios taking 10 plus years on their major releases with funding from all their proceeding games and publishers as financial support yet look where modern gaming is at. This is an attempt to make a game with big publisher funding but without a publisher fucking it up and those guys are really threatened by that fact cause existing or new upcoming dev studios will try to cut them out as well if this works.

    Besides not having as much time to play a big MMO all the time anymore, one of the reasons I am more looking forward to Squadron 42 than progress on StarCitizen at the moment is also exactly this: Squadron 42 doesn't have the problem of ship-sales and how they will handle them when 1.0 comes around + all the cost that they still need to cover after launch like Servers and continued development.
    Honestly, I have no idea and don't want to be in CIGs position when it comes to funding SC after 1.0. How do you do that as SC will be one of the most expensive Live-Service games in support-cost. Parts of that funding can come from other projects like the two successors to Squadron 42 and maybe part could in the future come from them licensing tech to other developers (if that is even possible and ignoring the fact that this will also cost them a lot of money).
    But aside from that. I don't think simply the 1-time buy and cosmetics (which are seen as acceptable at this point) are enough.
    I do think when it comes to cosmetics they have quite a bit they can use though with Vehicle-Skins, Player-Armor Skins, Weapon Skins and the real money-maker: Cosmetics for your HAB or Base but even that I think might very well not be enough, certainly not enough if they want to keep developing with the amount of devs and at the momentum they have right now.

    • @Bankai90
      @Bankai90 Місяць тому

      ye they are kinda on a tight schedule, there might come a time in 3-5years where the game will actually drop support from people all around. And what then? How long can they operate at a loss? The extreme exposure it got rn from Summ1t and other big streamer for a bit is huge for SC. Just unlucky that anybody who tried free fly this week realised it's a buggy unplayable mess most likely. If they would have had at least the basics set it could've brought them ten thousands of new players who might've stuck around.
      Yet it seems that the funding is actually speeding up currently so maybe for the next 5 years they will still see a surge and don't have to worry, just the question is how many ships do they really want to keep adding. What about powercreeps etc

      revenue from SQ42 will start funding SC, also if SC is in a more polished there are still lots of people that could buy in. CIG also has the option of designing other games using their engine. They have lots of options.

    • @latech7671
      @latech7671 Місяць тому

      @@phxbadash
      1. Revenue of SQ42: Generally yes, but you should also keep in mind that they need some of that for the second SinglePlayer. But generally I do agree which is also a reason I believe getting SQ42 out should be their focus at this point in time
      2. SC Sales would be good of course but more people buying it also means for CIG more cost (servers for one, but also to keep all these people you need more support and more content creation/devs)
      3. Designing other games (like the other two games to finish of SQ42s Trilogy) would of course be an option BUT that will also cost a lot of money. There is a reason that a studio often closes after a AAA-Game flops: You need all your Money to make the game.

    • @kristopherjames2404
      @kristopherjames2404 Місяць тому

      If they sold squadron 42 to 3 million people at 45 bucks thats 135 million. The other two in the trilogy will make that add up to 405 million.
      Once done with sq42 they could create narratives around other factions... tying subjective experience to lore building in game.
      The game being in an incomplete state has 10s of millions of players in a state of wait. Alot of players will only come for the single player/coop game that is Sq 42. Many will crave more afterwards and transition to the PU.
      Alot of people forget that in sq42 you fight the vanduul. By releasing that campaign you are effectively adding them to the game which would breathe way more then just new life into the pu.
      There are multiple reasons why sq42 is more important then anything else from the developers view, the most important one being the whale have been milked.

      It’s not that hard: just chuck $20,000,000 into the stock market and run the servers from profits. They have enough that it should literally be self perpetuating. Set up a trust to run it. Afterall, all this money was donated to run the game subscription free, and there should be enough cash to make the servers run for a long time. I would also cut the studio staff right back so that the game is basically just automated. And allow private servers or offline play.
      We already now that CIG have 3 squadron games, Star Engine to license out as well as all their other tech… plus mocap studios etc.
      Once you drop all the excess staff and close a few studios, CIG has many passive income streams.

    Sadly CIG also burned through this cash with little to show for in SC, a single system (ok second nearly ready), no economy, planets with nearly no content, some Tier 0 or 1 gameplay, and a lot of ships with different features all in need of finalization, a huge amount of bugs. So if it's for SC alone the amount of money used for development is questionable, so it's for SQ42 to surprise me and tell me where all the money has gone.

      @@guynamedmaggi5520The way they do server meshing is going to be the best so far. But we have to agree that the flight model is still not right after so many years of reworking, they only have started working on stalling mechanics, in a game involving atmospheric flight on top of space flight… And yet the combat (it’s all about combat in this game let’s face it, other specialties suck) is not even great because you need so many variants of ships to do a single different thing. A real life aircraft can do anti ship, air to air, air to ground, recon, SEAD, being a multirole aircraft basically. In this game, none of the light, medium and heavy combat ships can do that. You either torpedo/missile spam (not even that works) or dogfight. That’s where imo CIG failed to take inspiration from real life, implement it into a sci-fi universe, and embracing the « simulator » aspect of it without being DCS of course.
      A game can be simple and arcade while developed for years by a single dev (former KSP modder) like VTOL VR and nail that aspect perfectly. CIG: lots of devs, massive funds and technical means, can’t do anything right except graphics and visual level of detail so dear to Chris Roberts.
      « Okay, people don’t like this model, let’s try something else. » and « Okay, people don’t like that either, throw this thing called master modes in and see what happens » behavior should not exist. It’s a clear sign that the devs don’t have a proper gameplay/game design vision that they hardly believe in and will do everything to make it work. They just scrap stuff and start over, try random things and ideas hoping to do something good, but it’s 99% never a good result.

I wouldn't want it if it was randomly shoved into our face, but the verse is kinda a living breathing universe, with its own stories and whatnot. And we also get ads, just like IRL..for Mobiglass, for weapons, for food and drinks, for ships, etc. How about, after 1.0, CIG offers ads space on ingame billboard. Heck, their own branding devs can work it out and make the future version of Coke, McDonald, KFC.
    If SC got big enough with decent traffic of players, I think it might be a reasonable way to monetize the game by offering ads space that is non-intrusive and seamless within the verse itself. We drink Crux, Fizz, eat Whammer, we even have brand clothing inside. It might be even more immersive this way. We drink Coke, Fanta, Pocari, eat at Wendy's, etc.

      My eyes rolled pretty hard when he said that. Most of the ships have godawful layouts. The guys making these ships play by rule of cool, not ease of use, gameplay or practicality. The Ironclad is the first time I've looked at a ship and thought, 'hey, that actually makes some sense.'
      The MSR is my go to example of a horrifically bad interior design. It should be the Millenium Falcon of SC, but instead its a useless dud. With a ladder to access the ship. A ladder.

    One of the biggest criticisms that has me doubt the game development is that I’m still fighting bugs more than NPCs years later. We can have a heck of a time grabbing armor and weapons for an epic journey only to be pulled out of QT and slammed into an invisible enemy. I don’t mind if the game makes it feel like the players fault but times like that it’s enough to just call it a night.
    Also NPC Behavior. We were expecting passenger ship gameplay, to fill our ships with NPCs, but have yet to see them properly sit in a chair consistently

    700 million and 12 years but there still only a 50% chance you can buy food that works. I bought a multi tool on Everus Harbor, the space station above Hurston but there were no tractor beam attachments available there so I flew to CRU L1, found one but no food is available just drinks, there unless you go to the cargo supply shop they sell energy bars fortunately or I would have had to fly off looking for food so I wouldn't die. Took my Vulture, scavenged and loaded it to the brim with RMC that was 4 days ago and after trying over a dozen time at multiple locations to sell it it's still in my f@cking hull and yes I waited 10-20 minutes that didn't help a bit just wasted more of my time. Switched to mining with my Prospector, refined my first load yesterday tried to sell it this morning, no buyers again for ore now too. I tried a few other times then flew back to Everus Harbor with the load of refined ore in my Star Runner where my Vulture was to see if I could finally sell the RMC there... nope still stuck with it. Then I tried to sell the refined ore there... nope no buyers. Coming back after 3 years has been a complete and total disappointment you want to give CGI the benefit of the doubt but the fact they even added the "No Demand" and "No Market" tabs shows they are embarrassingly clueless and are trying to create some supply and demand system based on the backs of their customers hit and miss game play ilo of how things actually work. Give me one real life example were there was never a market for raw materials or constructions materials.. they don't exist. Local price fluctuations based on demand, of course, but when an entire star system supposedly gearing up for war doesn't want any of the game play materials you bought ships and they built a game mechanic for fails like this it's all on you CGI and it's a complete failure yet they strut around like they nailed it all the time.
    In summary it looks like Chris Roberts has enacted Brexit in space so we can't sell sht now just like in the UK now. And now he's talking about getting closer to Death of a Spaceman.. are you fricken kidding? That's what the name of the game should be. Try playing it Chris and maybe you can get the food and commodity sales to work among many other things that should not exist after 12 years but do and are pissing off your backers first.

    As bad as it sounds, continued funding for SC would best be done with a subscription based system. WoW has it, Dual Universe tried it, and frankly, it seems to me a lot of the industry is pushing towards it.
    Even at the 1.0 launch, let's say it's the top selling game ever. You are still only required to buy a $45 starter package to begin. Sure, it will pull in millions to continue development in a hot flash, but then it will slowly begin to die as funding runs low without ship sales.
    A subscription service will allow constant funding for years to develop. Im not saying i want it to be subsciption based, but for the sake of maintaining funding, it may be necessary. I imagine renting servers to run the game is expensive, and we dont even have server meshing or other space systems yet to jack up that cost.
