all I need or want is a way to drag and drop a photo I have in a folder with others in any order I want, seems windows did away with this, used to be so easy
I know exactly what you're talking about. We used to be able to choose to auto arrange files or to align to grid. Then, you could create an arbitrary order of files in each folder you cared about.
I found some articles on how you can try to put that functionality back. But, they want you to either install something or download and import a new registry value. Both of those seem a bit risky to me.
It may be time to consider a photo organizing app to give you the functionality you want.
I want a no cloud photo management solution. Something similar to the Photos App, but that actually recognizes the metadata. My main issue is that after importing a photo the date is updated to whatever day it is when importing.
Lightroom is great with organization and editing, but its subscription based and uses cloud.
A one payment good photo manager for iPad would be great.
Hey, Purplemoon. I understand exactly what you mean. I'm planning to take a good look at Movavi's photo organizer app; it was recommended my someone in the comments. It looks like Movavi does offer a cloud option, but it doesn't seem to be aimed at keeping your whole collection in the cloud, which leads me to believe it's optional. Pricing is around $50 USD. www.movavi.com/photo-organizer-mac/
Now, as I'm thinking about it, if you plan to pull pictures out of your Photos library, be sure to use the Export option, otherwise you risk leaving your metadata behind. File > Export > Export Unmodified Originals. That might be what's been happening.
Give the export a try with just a few images first to see whether that does the trick for you, and let me know.
Hey Ivan, so I want to organize my photos into different categories. I was wondering if there was an app that whenever you took the photo it automatically asked which album you would like to put it in, is that a thing? Thank you for your help in advance!!
Thanks for the comment. Are you on Windows, Mac, or something else? And, what do you take most of your pictures with?
I ask because if you are using either an iPhone or Android and have location services turned on in your camera app, then you can find pictures by searching their location and even their content. For example, you could search for "balloons" and "San Francisco" to find all your photos with both of those items in them. (This is usually what I do.)
Once you find a group of pictures, you can select them all and add them to an album.
Similarly, when you take photos on iOS and Android, the photos are grouped by date. You can select them all and manually add them to an album, which isn't something I do so much anymore. I tend to lean on the photo metadata for things like date, time, location, people, objects, and so on.
If you're using Photos on Mac, when you import a batch of photos, they all show up grouped together in the Imports section. You can grab them all and put them in an album that way.
If you let me know what platform you're on, I might have a recommendation for an app for you.

Well, I think you can do everything you need with the Photos app. However, it can feel a bit cumbersome to do all those steps every time.
I found a highly-rated app called Slidebox - Photo Manager. It has a 4.8 rating with over 9 thousand reviews. I haven't really used this app, but I did install it to take it for a quick spin. It's designed to streamline the whole photo management process. Although, in my opinion, it makes it way too easy to delete photos.
You might want to give it a try and see whether it can do what you need.

I haven't. Is this what you use? You're talking about the Western Digital product? Ibi Photo Manager, right?
It looks like a cool solution. However, I've been having trouble finding out information from Western Digital, who seems to be the ones that make the device.
It seems like it's a pretty easy-to-use device. The things I'd be worried about are backup. I want a way to easily save a copy of all the photos on the device so that if it dies I won't lose everything. Does Ibi let you do that?
Let me know if you think it's worth my getting one to take it for a spin. There doesn't really seem to be any way to learn about it otherwise, aside from reading the reviews and questions on Amazon.com.

Still using Picasa on Windows, but just moved to Mac. I haven't found anything comparable on either platform. I want to maintain my current folder structure, without an import requiremetn.

Hey Ivan, do you know how to export photos to a hard drive and keep all the metadata?
Specially the location, geotags, like when you can see in the map where it was taken.
Hey, Marisa. Photo metadata, or Exif data, is part of the image or video file. Whether it is preserved or stripped away depends on the app you’re using, the export settings, or both.
I do most of my photo editing on Apple Photos for Mac, which does support some Exif data viewing and editing. Others apps can do the same thing on Windows.
What platform are you using? Windows or Mac? Are you exporting from a phone?
@@HeyIvan I guess she uses Android, for privacy simple copying does delete metadata for privacy reasons.
But i don't use Android for photos so i can't help either. Just remember this fact from my previous developer days.
I’lll check. I have an Android phone, too and will see what I can learn. On Android there are a number of different photo apps. Each can work differently.
@@HeyIvan I have a Mac and always had this problem. I don't know how to export my pics and videos to a hard drive (because obviously my iCloud runs out of space very often) without loosing this info. I mean the Photos app exports to a file named after the place and date.. but that's not exactly what I would like.
Hey, Marisa. Knowing the program helps a lot! I just checked and you are right. When you drag pictures out, it leaves behind the metadata. However, if you select the pictures you want and click File > Export, you'll see a dialog box appear that lets you choose the image quality and whether to include your Title, Keyword, Caption and Location data.
There's also an option to export an unmodified original. This lets you grab the full quality photo out of the Photos app. Otherwise, you get a version of the photo that's optimized for the display on the Mac.

Really enjoyed your video - you caught me at Picasa. : ) I have a Mac and still organize my photos by year, then month. Within the month I have July 25, for instance, with a short description. (Remember the days when you were limited to 8 or 10 characters for a file name?). When Apple changed from iPhotos to Photos I thought, "Here we go again." Some of my old videos can no longer be viewed. So, I didn't want to lose control of my photos. I take photos and video with my iPhone, then airdrop to my desktop, slide them into a folder, then into the right month. No need to change - I love my system. However, I am always looking. : )
I totally understand what you mean. I have sort of a mix of photo library technologies going on in my life right now. It's a toss up between Google Photos and Apple Photos for me, with a dash of Plex photos. However, I'm still searching for the best way to share photos with my wife and family.
Apple Photo shared photo albums kind of do that. And, Google has a way to share all your photos with a life partner. However, I know that for most folks, they'll probably want to pick a start day or time to start from, instead of going all the way back into their teenage years before they met their partner.

I am still struggling to find something better than Picasa on a mac. DigiKam seems to be the only alternative but the interface leaves a lot to be desired.

I have all my photos organized in picasa from the years of 1950s to 2020. I love the fact that you can see them all in a gallery view and move around and label them for the time of year and or events as they happened. I need to get them off of windows 10 computer on to my New 2021 iMac computer. I would like to keep the picasa and all my albums as they are and not loose all that I have organized for the past 15 years. Is that possible? This really ticks me off. This is way above my skill set to tackle. Thanks
I ultimately submitted to using Apple Photos. However, I’ll check to see whether folder names are honored as albums when you import pics on the Mac. iPhoto used to work that way.

Does it has facial recognition?
Yes. Apple Photos does have facial recognition. You can tag faces and name them or associate them with contact cards. Indexing happens when the screen is locked and the phone is charging.
Ivan, I am looking for a simple photo ap that can provide: 1) non-cloud storage, 2) writing on the picture capability and 3) capability to labeling multiple photos within one year. Have 15K pictures already organized by years, but want to place small/discrete text on the photo so that the viewer can see subject, date and location of the photo. When traveling, sometimes you go from one location to another. I want to be able to label the 10 pictures I took in Venezia, then the 15 I took in Lake Como, then the 25 I took in Cinco Terre and so on. Don't want to do the labeling one by one, but in chunks. Hi, there. You may want to check out Davinci Resolve, which has a free version. They have color tools that may be able to help you do what you want. However, if the video is too dark, you might not be able to salvage it, no matter the editor you use.

can i organize my photos in my iphone using itunes although I don't subscribe to icloud?
If you’re using iTunes still, and then that means you’re on windows. It’s been a minute since I’ve organized photos through iTunes. I suspect the only control you’ll have is the folder structure on the PC that you’re syncing with.
I’ll spin up my PC and see what I can figure out.
You can use your Phone to manage photos on it without paying for iCloud, in just the Photos app, too ... no PC required.
@@HeyIvan you're right about the folder structure on the pc. I just wanted to organize in pc because organizing in phone is so confusing. For example, in iphone i want to organize all photos in several albums, but i can't differentiate the ones i have moved to albums and the ones i haven't, because the photos in library doesn't disappear eventho i have moved them to albums. If i use pc maybe i can use the smart folder function to solve this. But i'm on windows, so i can't use photos app like in ios🥲

Hey Ivan, do my photos stay in Apple Photos forever or do they start deleting over time?
I have standardized on Photos. For me, they stay in there forever. However, storage isn’t free in Apple Photos. Depending on your Google Photos settings, storage can be free. So, I know someone who takes iPhone pictures, which save into Photos, and they also use Google Photos to pull over a copy. In this way, he doesn’t keep the pictures in Apple Photos forever. When he runs low on space he deletes the Apple Photos copy and keeps his collection in Google.
Let me know whether that makes sense.

I pay for extra storage and have more than 40,000 photos and just about 2500 videos. My photos run back to around 1999.
You know, I just now realized I should also say you don’t have to use iCloud with photos. Then, you’re limited by the storage that your device has. If you use iCloud, then when your device runs low on storage, what can’t fit will live in iCloud and be downloaded to your device on-demand, when it’s accessed.

@@HeyIvan thanks for getting back to me im on a MAC iPhoto gave me the ability to slide photos all around in a folder no need to edit just trying to compare colors and slide around without renaming them all..
Ah, I get it. To do the same in the Mac Photos app, you can create Albums. Then, put photos in the album and rearrange the order of them as you like. Otherwise, you'll see a chronological list of photos in Library.

I was going to install adobe bridge the in the terms it says it can spy on your photos and send information off. So that is a no go for me.
Yeah. The terms and conditions have kept me from using a ton of apps. As well as the data privacy stuff.
Some of those agreements are 30 pages long.
I miss picassa 😭 google photos sucks!
I miss Picasa, too. Sharing photos with my wife used to be so much easier.
I’m working on figuring out the best way to do that now, since we no longer use a shared family computer.
Google Photos allows you to share with a partner, but it’s not as robust as I would like.
My issue with Google Photos is twofold. 1) They alter the original photos. 2) They use whatever I upload to data mine me for marketing. I like Apple Photos better for these reasons, but it becomes a manual process to move my Samsung photos into it. (Not automatic like the rest of my iOS/Mac stuff)
Hmm. It sounds like you have a Mac. You know, it may be possible to introduce some automation into your process to help extract your Android photos and pull them into Apple's Photos.
Of course, Apple may ingest the full quality of a photo, but it serves up different quality pics based on the device you're using to look at them.
@@HeyIvanHello ... do tell about the automation. Right now, I pull the images out of my other devices and manually upload them into Apple Photos. (Yes, I have a Mac ... ). I literally have photos dating back to the 1990s in Apple Photos.
Okay. I just tested and it looks like a Mac app called Hazel can help you do what you want to do. I tested it with an external hard drive and Photos and it worked as expected.
Hazel is an app made by Noodlesoft. A single license of the app is $42. They also have a family license for a bit more and upgrade pricing if you've ever owned it before. I'm not an affiliate and don't make any money from the recommendation, but the app has been reliable for me over the years and I think it might help you. They have a free trial so you can be sure it works before you spend anything. www.noodlesoft.com
Hazel can watch a folder (or an external drive when it's connected) and then act on items in that folder when it sees something. For example, I had it watch a folder on my external drive and told it to tag any photos it sees as "Imported" and then import them into the Photos app. You can get really fancy really fast. Let's add one minor level of "fancy." You could tell Hazel to watch that folder and then only import photos not tagged as "Imported." This means you wouldn't have to delete them from your Android and could potentially just import the un-imported items.

the fact that you give a thumbs up to the apple photos app on the phone, for me, you lose all credibility! that app is painful! so is icloud. unless you are on a mac. thx
If you have a Mac or are only on iOS, Apple Photos is a real option. If you live in a mixed environment, like Windows, Android, and iOS, there are better choices.
