I just picked up the g400 hybrid used I hit 6 balls on the simulator and fell in love with the feel and the forgiveness. Can't wait to use it on the course.
I have to 'old' crossover, like a hybrid I hit some amazing shots with it and some terrible shots with it, very temperamental. Long irons may be tougher to hit well but you don't get those crazy hooks when things go wrong, more practice required
This is really smart by ping. The last Crossover provided a much lower ball flight than the hybrids and IMO was a bit harder to hit because of this. Now the crossover and hybrid provide almost identical numbers, which means players only need to chose based on looks and feel.
i love my crossover. I'm about a 5 handicap, and i'm not a long hitter. I can carry my 5 iron about 175-180 yards (i hit iblades), and my 3 & 4 irons are just too close together to warrant carrying both of them. The g400 3 crossover is perfect (for me) for those 190-200 yard shots that i find myself hitting all the time. It doesn't duckhook like some other hybrids i've hit either.
I have the old crossover and I agree with you on the sound (its horrible) but when I tested it against the old hybrid, I found that I hit it much straighter and with the same distance. Perfect for what I want it for, which is hitting off the tee and occasionally into par 5's as it just goes at my target. With the hybrid, it was great but had the tendency to snap a few hooks with it.
Never understood the big deal with sound. I understand it's what the user wants to hear but if I'm pumping it down the middle, I could give a damn about what it sounds like.
oojjac if that same good player is as good as you say he can hit the hardest "Rock Flight" straight down the fairway with a club that sounds like a bazooka and he will still feel that same pure click of hitting it between the "screws"
Sound is directly related to feel. Studies show that golfers can't actually tell the difference as much with feel without the presence of sound to back it up. Some players (myself included) are very picky about the sound produced at impact. "pumping it down the middle" sounds an awful lot like a comment akin to a terrible hack golfer lol, no offense. When it comes to irons, if you aren't pumping them ALL down the middle then you have bigger problems than you think. sound/feel/looks are the main things players are looking for in irons... if you are looking for irons to pump them down the middle then you need a lesson not irons.
yeah LOL. i hit my mizuno mp64 5 iron about 195yards carry. i tried my friends taylormade speedblade 5 iron and carried it 217yards. it felt horrible. sounded impossible to know, and went superhigh and superlong. no thx. wouldnt change my clubs for the world. irons on steroids are for hack golfers with too much y chromosome;)
Rick, I really gotta say I really love what Ping has been doing with the forgiveness thing and the overall quality and the way they hit. Doesn't matter wether we are talking hybrids, Woods or drivers. Great stuff. However I do share your opinion on the Crossover. I don't like them ! And Rick. You may not be a big hybrid fan but the Ping G 400 one's are worth becoming one . :) If I remember right you frequently hit hybrids to the left. . You were hitting this Ping one very well. Came out lovely! Ping has put lots of work into their line to make their clubs quite user friendly. I am really quite blown away! Best regards Rick. Spider Dubiel
This morning Rick I did add the same Ping you reviewed here . This Ping G 400 Hybrid @ 22 degrees is awesome. Lands softly on the green and holds it. :) I also have a 30 degree one also and its a godsend!!!
I'm a fan of the hybrid clubs. I have a couple of driving irons but I just don't get the distance like I do with my 3 ,4 hybrid or 5 wood. I love the way the new Ping driver and fairway metals look. The bottom kinda reminds me of my Adams Super Speedline metals.
When Rick doesn't like the sound, I love the sound. When he hated the Nike Vapor Pro irons, I love them. Thats how I choose my clubs. I love that crack sound and I hate hybrids. Thanks Rick! When are you going on tour 😂
Here is a quick story about how I preferred the crossover iron over the hybrid: I am a 1 handicap golfer and I have always struggled off the tee, so I was looking for a product that was forgiving off the tee and hit it approximately 240-250 down the middle of the fairway. I have my ping i20 hybrid which I love and it is pretty good of the tee, the only problem was that I was stuck hitting it around 225-230 and it comes really high and with lots of spin. So in the windy days I really struggled. I needed a bit more distance and a lower trajectory for the long par 4s. So I decided to buy the g400 crossover 2 iron with an extra stiff shaft to see what happens. Personally I am a guy who loves to hit my irons/fairway woods/hybrids off the deck. At first, I was hitting the crossover iron off the deck, and I was struggling really hard just like rick is at this video. It felt really bad when you hit it with divot and it was not that forgiving at all. After long sessions of practice, one day, I decided to tee up the ball to almost 1-2 cm off the ground. You would not believe how everything changed. Suddenly I am hitting this iron 260, it is really forgiving and the ball comes out REALLY HOT. Its the best club I have in my bag by far. I saw that rick was hitting the iron off the deck, but in reality those irons are designed to hit it with a high tee. That is why it is called driving iron. Hitting the iron off the deck on the fairway could come really hard, but if you are looking to hit it off the tee as a driving iron I really recommend it. MAKE SURE TO HIT IT WITH A HIGH TEE.
i hit this thing for a solid half hour yesterday. Like the new one better than last years. they put a weight in the toe that makes it feel like it won't hook. I actually like the sound. Fun to hit
Been shopping around for a crossover/driving iron to fit between my 27* 5 iron and my 21* hybrid. The g400 crossover looks like it could be a good fit. My only gripe is the lofts are set up to match game improvement clubs, and a 4 iron at 22* is a long way off from a 5 iron of 27*. Would be nice if they offered more traditional tour lofts in these types of irons to attract better players. Might have to go with the T-MB just for the fact that the lofts fit in better with players irons. Shame because I really liked the looks of this club.
My go to club is a 25 degree Callaway x2hot hybrid,so versatile and fills me with confidence.looking at a 27 degree hybrid but not sure if I need it rick ?
except he didn't did he? 1 yard further carry with the hybrid and more spin. Anyone looking at those figures will go for the Hybrid because of it's ability to better hold the green
i truly feel like golf clubs today sound much worse and often feel much worse than clubs in like 1995-2010, but they are still better clubs more tech and more forgiving but like even player irons , when you hit it flush it doesn’t feel pure , but maybe it’s cuz i got injured in 2009 and quit golf for several years , im so use to a different era
Why as golfers are we so effected by the smallest things? My clubs are not quite the right color, wrong sound, too big, too small... Man, I wish that woodpecker would stop pecking in my backswing...
All a matter of personal preference I guess bu as all coaches will tell you try them out yourself preferably with a fitter before buying any new clubs, your wallet and most importantly your game will benefit! I was looking to get a new set of clubs (changing from my Callaway Apex Pros) and always had my eyes on s set of Mizuno's sexy clubs right?! Went to Mizuno demo day and got fitted for a combo set, JPX900 Forged/Tours. Was ready to pace my order when a PING demo day also came up shortly afterwards so decided to try for comparison.PING iBlades dispersion was much tighter than Mizuno's which was way more important to me than an extra few yards with each club so ordered a combi set of iBlades/i200's. Also tried the Crossover (which in my head I thought I wanted) and the G400 Hybrid....hybrid felt much better and easier to hit. First few rounds with new cubs and I'm now consistently scoring in the 70's! Now the question is do I change my Callaway X driver too?! Obviously I'll get fitted first before changing! :-)
I'm a scratch golfer, hit 3 balls with the 3 iron today and bought the club. It goes around 240yards and i dont think i'll be using my 3wood very often now.
Please review the Wedgewood irons. They are only available by on line. I’m intrigued by the look. The 7 iron is on sale right now for only $49 plus shipping of about $10. They say they are 100% guaranteed and you can ship them back for just the cost of shipping for a full refund.
NP-75 I use the Callaway X Prototype 21* driving iron. You can get it in 18* if u want. It is the 2013 version of ricks 2 iron. I love this driving iron so much, it's a must try!
I love the mp-h5 if you want to classify it as a driving iron. If you want to drop your score though I would not get a 2 iron and add another wedge to help with your short game
Thanks for the review. I have the 3 & 4 Crossover from *last* year, and have trouble turning them over too much, the only clubs I have that I hook. I thought that moving the tungsten weight more into the toe would help, but after this review perhaps I'll just weaken my grip a bit when hitting the old ones. The PING grip was AWFUL!!! Glad to see it go.
Joe Perez I have the 3 & 4 also. I can get the 4 to fly high and straight, the 3 is more of a low runner for me with a bit of a hook. I also agree with you, the PING grip is horrible, one of the first things I changed.
My swing has a tendency to be delivered too quick as well. The clubs are long, I was thinking about cutting 1/2" off the shafts and seeing if that helps improves my strike zone.
Rick, how would you compare the sound to the black version of the Crossover from previous year. I saw this come out and immediately passed it off as a wannabe of the Maltby HDI head which is absolutely fantastic in itself and IMO what the Crossover aspires to be. The thing i noticed with the original crossover is that it had a very loud plastic "SLAP" sound. It was an awful awful sound and really affected the overall feel of the club to the point that nothing really felt solid and "on the screws". Would you say this is better/ worse/ same than the original?
Just a heads up, the g400 crossover does NOT come with a head cover. Just got my set in and my crossover didn’t come with a cover, so I contacted Ping about it and they said they don’t even make crossover head covers and most just use a hybrid cover in its place.
If you use the rule of thumb of 1000 rpm times the club you are hitting, so in this case 4x1000 the crossover is perfect at just over 4000. Better players would be hitting puff balls at over 5000 rpm on the hybrid. All the other reviews have raved about its workability. I can certainly see its place
Can someone tell me how this club is to buy today? I want the hybrid but I feel like a lot of people aren’t fans of them why is that? No one explains why they aren’t a fan
I have the 3 crossover bent down to 17 degrees, it does up to 263 yds on GC2. Every time I play it people are well impressed with the sound, flight, dispersion. I'm practically throwing my driver in the bin (bad swing flaws which get exposed with driver) and investigating a good 3 wood and possibly trying the G410 @ 17 crossover to see if the new tech can replace my G400 crossover which I got for £100 on ebay. I don't want to go down the hybrid route, a lot of players have a negative view of people who play hybrids, its got a reputation as a duffers club. I know some good players play it, but every s***t player I know has a hybrid in the bag and its kind of an acknowledgement you need a lot of help. The crossover is kinda on the edge, it doesn't come with the stigma the hybrid has. That's why I won't be playing a hybrid. When I do a good shot, I want players to give me a bit of kudos. I don't want them to think the club has wiped my bottom for me. That's why I won't play a hybrid. And yes I do care what people think cos a lot of these players are the better players in the club who play for first team. So its important to me what they think.
I think the Crossover is for the guy who is playing iBlades but (which is why they have these versions) the 5 and 4 iron don't gap well anymore and at the same time HE and yeah its a guy thing doesn't want to look like an LPGA player with 3 hybrids in the bag...we are all too vain. I hate that sound too, the guys who got this right is Titleist TMB.
To all golfers who want an easy longiron that sounds better, feels better and looks better than the ping crossover.(its even forged;) SRIXON Zu45 I play alot of golf, and off a low hcp and i love my srixon 18 dg utility. (into wind its a beast). #youcanthankmelater
I'm not a fan of black clubfaces, because it's not too long before the clubface looks bad. I assume one reason behind the black clubface is to get us to replace the club sooner than we would otherwise because of the scratched up face.
Operator its a studuo that he uses for teaching and it opens up to a full driving range. If he were onba "regular" driving range his reviews would be contingent on the weather and he would also pribably have random people walking around and asking stupid questions!
Don’t really enjoy this review. The stats spoke for themselves. It’s the same exact club. Identical. If you never would’ve hear that sound after the first shot you wouldn’t of been so quick to choose the hybrid over the crossover. You can see that after that one shot the rest of the review was biased towards the hybrid
Are you crazy? Obviously a hybrid with lower and rear cg always spin more than an iron with a cg close to the face if loft is the same. Come on rick sometime I wonder if you understand tech at all
I just picked up the g400 hybrid used I hit 6 balls on the simulator and fell in love with the feel and the forgiveness. Can't wait to use it on the course.

Just spent $2400 on a 3 day trip to Orlando with the kids. 3 days that could have been one sweet set of golf gear lol
dads are so underappreciated #sacrifices
i love my crossover.
The clean honest reviews are what made you the main guy in this genre, kudos bruv
" like an iblade just after Christmas" hahahahaha
i laughed pretty hard at that as well.
I love that "vintage" look on the hybrid and crossover😍
I have the old crossover and I agree with you on the sound (its horrible) but when I tested it against the old hybrid, I found that I hit it much straighter and with the same distance. Perfect for what I want it for, which is hitting off the tee and occasionally into par 5's as it just goes at my target. I agree, 100%
Exactly same as me, I hit a fade with irons but a hook with hybrids. Much prefer the crossover
Never understood the big deal with sound. I understand it's what the user wants to hear but if I'm pumping it down the middle, I could give a damn about what it sounds like.
deexspecial14 any good player cares about sound because it's so related to feel
Agree with you. If it goes straight at the expected distance, the club could hum "God Save the Queen" for all the %#!& I care.
oojjac if that same good player is as good as you say he can hit the hardest "Rock Flight" straight down the fairway with a club that sounds like a bazooka and he will still feel that same pure click of hitting it between the "screws"

just bought the g400 hybrid!

Going to test the Ping G 400 Hybrid tomorrow against the Rogue, thanks for that Rick!
I've got the 'old' crossover & love it.. not sure the new one would warrant a change in my bag though?
Here is a quick story about how I preferred the crossover iron over the hybrid:

Thinking of getting one.
To fit in-between my 5-iron (165 when I hit it right) and my G400 5 wood (185-190 when I hit it flush)
I liked the crossover last year....just thought the stock shaft was way too light
i hit this thing for a solid half hour yesterday. Like the new one better than last years. they put a weight in the toe that makes it feel like it won't hook. I actually like the sound. Fun to hit
The hybrid looks so nice at the top and the bottom
Hi Rick
can you do a comparison video between. G400 crossover 3i vs P790 3i vs Mizuno MP18 MMC Fli-Hi 3i.
Cheers! Keep up the good work!
The crossover is my go to off the tee. I even have the same grip lol.
Been shopping around for a crossover/driving iron to fit between my 27* 5 iron and my 21* hybrid. The g400 crossover looks like it could be a good fit. I really enjoy your videos !!!!!
thank you, great review....!
awsome spin rate rick you could bag that on a parkland or woodland maybe heathland answell
Just saying, but you get better figures out of the crossover even if you don't like the sound. Interesting review.
except he didn't did he? 1 yard further carry with the hybrid and more spin. Anyone looking at those figures will go for the Hybrid because of it's ability to better hold the green
God I love the g400 style headcovers
Finally I've been waiting all day for this video
Great video
And that's the end of the crossover! Have the last model, it's love hate! Was exited about a new version, now not so much. Thanks Rick
i truly feel like golf clubs today sound much worse and often feel much worse than clubs in like 1995-2010, but they are still better clubs more tech and more forgiving but like even player irons , when you hit it flush it doesn’t feel pure , but maybe it’s cuz i got injured in 2009 and quit golf for several years , im so use to a different era
Can you compare the G400 crossover 4 iron to the G400 4 iron
Why as golfers are we so effected by the smallest things? My clubs are not quite the right color, wrong sound, too big, too small... Man, I wish that woodpecker would stop pecking in my backswing...
Alabaster245 then we get the perfect club perfect color shape sound feel. Still shank it lol.
All a matter of personal preference I guess bu as all coaches will tell you try them out yourself preferably with a fitter before buying any new clubs, your wallet and most importantly your game will benefit! I'm a scratch golfer, hit 3 balls with the 3 iron today and bought the club.
It goes around 240yards and i dont think i'll be using my 3wood very often now.
I bought mine on sale and I have mixed feelings. I don’t like the graphite shaft but I like the low loft.
Same, my fairway woods have been retired since getting these crossovers.
what Christmas have to do with golf club?
Please review the Wedgewood irons. They are only available by on line. I’m intrigued by the look. The 7 iron is on sale right now for only $49 plus shipping of about $10. They say they are 100% guaranteed and you can ship them back for just the cost of shipping for a full refund.
I love Ping Hybrids. :) I own G 410's. Great stuff. Great review Rick. Spider Dubiel
What is with that black bolt at the end of the toe of the club.
If you don't want the g400 crossover Rick, I'll take it off your hands. I love it!
be interesting to hear what Finchy thought of the crossover as he liked the previous club
Hey I been looking for a good 2 iron iam 16 and a 5 handicap what club would u guys recommend
NP-75. I believe Peter Finch is using the Cobra driving iron (2 - 3 iron) and really likes it.
NP-75 I use the Callaway X Prototype 21* driving iron. You can get it in 18* if u want. It is the 2013 version of ricks 2 iron. I love this driving iron so much, it's a must try!
NP-75 Adams pro dhy is great . Got one based on Rick's review .
Titelst T-MB. Literally like butter
TJ Riordan I think my problem is that because they are long clubs, my swing unconsciously gets too fast, and hence turning it over too fast.
My swing has a tendency to be delivered too quick as well. The clubs are long, I was thinking about cutting 1/2" off the shafts and seeing if that helps improves my strike zone.
How about a retro showdown...Nickent 4DX vs G400 hybrid?
Rick, how would you compare the sound to the black version of the Crossover from previous year. I saw this come out and immediately passed it off as a wannabe of the Maltby HDI head which is absolutely fantastic in itself and IMO what the Crossover aspires to be. The thing i noticed with the original crossover is that it had a very loud plastic "SLAP" sound. It was an awful awful sound and really affected the overall feel of the club to the point that nothing really felt solid and "on the screws". Would you say this is better/ worse/ same than the original?
I have a Nike sq head driver, that sounds like a starter gun when I drive, I could care less of the sound.
Just a heads up, the g400 crossover does NOT come with a head cover. Just got my set in and my crossover didn’t come with a cover, so I contacted Ping about it and they said they don’t even make crossover head covers and most just use a hybrid cover in its place.

Crossover is amazing
I agree. Hybrid is much better. Spider Dubiel
Do you deliberately not set an achievable pin for your reviews? It's a very common theme. Great work on your channel by the way 😉
well since you don't care for the crossover, send it my way. ;)
Peter Maxey any club he don't like send my way I got some old ass clubs
Hybrid all day, its easier to hit and you can use them from any lie, why make the game harder and use driving irons/crossovers.
Everyone loves the crossover apart from Rick
Can someone tell me how this club is to buy today? I want the hybrid but I feel like a lot of people aren’t fans of them why is that? No one explains why they aren’t a fan
mate you do the best reviews out there in UA-cam land. keep it up buddy!
Rick you get way too hung up on sound my friend!!!
Rick, this would worth testing on the course from a few different lies.
Ricky Shiels!! This is really disappointing because I carry a Ping Rapture 2 iron and I am looking to upgrade.
ferociousferret get last year's crossover. amazing club
club "A" carries 250yds club "B" carries 210yds .... i am getting club "B" cause club "A" sounds clunky
I am not liking the crossover. I will take a good hybrid any day. Great review though. At least we know now.:)
I'm not a big fan of these new G400's, in my opinion the G's were the best
Interesting. All four of the hybrid shots went left as expected. Hybrids are hook machines for decent golfers.
Ping was very clear that the G400 was not a driving iron as you said.
I hate that sound too, the guys who got this right is Titleist TMB.
damn that's crazy. I thought the hybrid would have launched higher
launches lower because the extra spin will increase peak height. If it launched higher the peak height would be too high and you'd lose distance
To all golfers who want an easy longiron that sounds better, feels better and looks better than the ping crossover.(its even forged;) SRIXON Zu45 I play alot of golf, and off a low hcp and i love my srixon 18 dg utility. (into wind its a beast). #youcanthankmelater
7:55 Im sorry what was that???
Rick you look like you're almost casting....half way through the downswing?! :) That draw is brutal.
I'm not a fan of black clubfaces, because it's not too long before the clubface looks bad. I assume one reason behind the black clubface is to get us to replace the club sooner than we would otherwise because of the scratched up face.
Howie Land all club faces will get scratched, but scratches on black just shows up more
Howie Land racist lol
i know this wont be seen by you Rick, but please start doing testings outdoors. The mat and hitting net bit is getting so dated.
Operator its a studuo that he uses for teaching and it opens up to a full driving range. If he were onba "regular" driving range his reviews would be contingent on the weather and he would also pribably have random people walking around and asking stupid questions!
Look of an iron and sound of an wood!? not bad results though really?
You hit it well, and its basically the same as the hybrid, you just don't like it as well.
So clearly based off of the spin numbers the shaft isn't right for you which will throw off your numbers
Unadjustable on the hybrid... damn, that is a let down.
crossover sounds so sloppy
G400 hybrid can not be adjusted in anyway. Clearly doesn’t have a screw on the bottom as you say it’s adjustable. 😂
Come on rick sometime I wonder if you understand tech at all
I hate hybrids, but that driving iron looks like, well....shit.
1v1 me bruh
yea dude
Ugliest ping iron Ive ever seen.
