This is one of my biggest pet peeves - Christians arguing as if their ideas of morality and justice are universal and untouchable. You can't argue with someone about the benefits of having relationships and/or sex before marriage if they just go "well, my God says it's wrong, so it must be wrong". I personally know a whole bunch of people who basically equate homosexuality with pedophilia, or at least believe that LGBTQ+ individuals are very likely to be child abusers. And it's impossible to debate such topics with them because their religion stands above anything mere humans "claim" to have figured out.

The thing that upsets me the most about Amanuel's argument is that when his assertions were compared to the exact same ones from other religions, he dismissed them all as being wrong. Not only is that extremely arrogant, but it's also completely insulting. Even when I still had a flimsy belief in a god during my adolescence, comparing religions never convinced me that my beliefs must be the only correct ones because I understood that the arguments I was hearing from the priests were no greater than what I had been hearing from every other religion. Looking back on it, I feel fortunate my class devoted a section of the semester to comparing religions because it taught how to question what I hear.
Amanual's problem is that he really is a victim of emotional manipulation and indoctrination. His story about the guilt really is as far as it goes regarding his rejoining the faith. He has no rational reason to accept God is real, and he's too deep to realize that's the case. I'd argue that's the case for virtually all Christians who are otherwise functional adults in society. That's why shows like this are so important.
He admitted he believes because he’s scared. Foresst asked Ammanuel that if Forest was god of another universe and he did all the very same things God did, would Forrest be evil? Ammanuel said yes. That call was very enlightening. The guy genuinely believes God is evil and only sends people to hell because he finds amusement in it, but Ammanuel would never say this out loud because it’s blasphemy. They had to tiptoe around him actually saying the words.
His problem is that he’s a simpleton. He can’t reason an answer using his own thoughts. You can tell that for every question, he has a rehearsed answer. He’s stuck in a loop of scripture, unable to speak spontaneously.

In high school, I had a best friend who became a born-again Catholic. He was pretty hardcore about it. His two bros and mom went to one church, but he and his dad went to another, more old-fashioned church that still held mass in Latin. He decided that he couldn't join his circle to see R-rated movies because he wasn't allowed to see boobs. However, he could see R-rated movies that were violent and gory if there was no female flesh. During college, I came home for the summer and visited. He bragged about tearing down pro choice posters on his college campus, and seemed to think that was the best, bravest thing ever. Our friendship ended that day.

I speak 5 languages, at least 2 fluently, and I have never claimed an ability to speak in tongues. It is because my way is obviously not legit, seeing how any native speaker could listen to me and tell if I was doing it wrong. Only a spiritual translator can tell us what they say, so that has to be 100% legit.
Fun fact: I was raised fundamentalist/charismatic, and the first time I spoke in tongues, I was about 6 and my grandparents and I sat towards the front of the service, and my grandma worked for the church, so the pastor agreed to pray over me for her. One of the most formative experiences of my life was being nine years old and making fun of a gay kid on the school bus, feeling really awful about it, telling my parents, and then going to his house to apologize to him in person. I can't know if he ever truly forgave me, and I still remember doing that over two decades later, but having to actually face someone you have wronged is important. Just pretending that you're forgiven because a third party says you are is disingenuous in the extreme, and that's not even acknowledging the problem of proving the existence of that third party.

I always find it weird that people cite speaking in tongues as being proof of anything. When I could do it as an Atheist because it's just fucking nonsense.

I speak 5 languages, at least 2 fluently, and I have never claimed an ability to speak in tongues. It is because my way is obviously not legit, seeing how any native speaker could listen to me and tell if I was doing it wrong. Only a spiritual translator can tell us what they say, so that has to be 100% legit.
Fun fact: I was raised fundamentalist/charismatic, and the first time I spoke in tongues, I was about 6 and my grandparents and I sat towards the front of the service, and my grandma worked for the church, so the pastor agreed to pray over me for her. I was kinda confused as to what was supposed to be happening, and then my grandma said that I had to speak what was coming from Heaven to my heart. Well, I couldn’t “feel” anything, so when the pastor came over, I panicked and just started fucking screaming because it was “in my heart”.
@@PastelOddity "Speaking in tongues" is a totally socially learned behavior, done exclusively in places where that is an accepted norm of behavior. In my Methodist church, it was not done, and I am sure the more devout parishioners were every bit as holy as anyone in that church. Just different customs, what one is brought up on.

One of the most formative experiences of my life was being nine years old and making fun of a gay kid on the school bus, feeling really awful about it, telling my parents, and then going to his house to apologize to him in person. I can't know if he ever truly forgave me, and I still remember doing that over two decades later, but having to actually face someone you have wronged is important. Just pretending that you're forgiven because a third party says you are is disingenuous in the extreme, and that's not even acknowledging the problem of proving the existence of that third party.
