Watershed for me too. Alas, that's the album that got me into them. Lotus Eater to be precise is the song that got me. Gotten more obsessed ever since.
Great to hear ToothlessWizard! Check out our archive, i'm sure we have some more interesting talks with some of your favorite artists. We've done a lot over the years ;)
I know Opeth has so many great albums and songs but Morningrise deserves some love too like cmon ppl, I mean Black Rose Immortal is one of the greatest songs ever written
No one has ever written/created a masterpiece record. It's almost impossible to create a whole album that's perfectly perfect and in all ways a masterpiece. There are only individual masterpieces, songs, not whole albums.
I'm not surprised, frankly. All the normal pressures and sacrifices of having a band along with horribly vitriolic ex fans endlessly criticising their creative decisions. So brutal. I hope he does some side project stuff with Swanö or Wilson again. As long as he keeps making music, I'm happy.
It's not an easy lifestyle and especially when your music taste matures as a musician and composer with a noticeable portion of your fanbase not being able see the new material for what it's worth... not that people have to like the new material, rather just get over themselves.
I'm not in the music industry but I think record contracts demand a certain amount of records and shows in a certain time period. It's not like Opeth are financially independent like Metallica.
your new music diresction is not good. you were much better and respected as a metal band. there are so many bands that do prog rock better. the way You playd prog metal was masterful. stick to it!
you Opeth fans are weird. You act like they were Cannibal Corpse or something before. There's not this huge difference between their growl-era stuff and their later stuff. If anything, they're playing the style they should have been playing for awhile now.
Mikael may have said this directly or indirectly before: he doesn't give a shit about what fans think of Opeth's albums or musical directions. He's doing music because that's what he enjoys. He writes music that he enjoys listening to. He doesn't follow what's trending or what brings more cash into his pocket. Just a simple musician from Sweden doing what he loves to do. So if you enjoy Opeth, stick to it. If you don't anymore, so long....
I hope this guy never stops making music. I love him, I love his music, and I would completely understand if he ends Opeth tomorrow.
"As far as I'm concerned we haven't done a masterpiece record" - Mikael Åkerfeldt, 2016.
WTF!!!
MAYH!!!!!
Bruno Čavara I absolutely agree
yes i was like what?? but i get the perfeccionism and high expectation that he has for himself
Great interview. I love the new direction, I love the past stuff too. Yep, as long as he keeps making music......
Still life, blackwater park, ghost reveries, damnation. If these are not masterpieces then do you mind defining a masterpiece?
Yes exactly! Pick any one of those you mentioned. They're masterpieces to us
Watershed for me too. Alas, that's the album that got me into them. Lotus Eater to be precise is the song that got me. Gotten more obsessed ever since.
@@ArchieXIV You described my relationship with Opeth perfectly, exactly the same
@@Aakheperura yes!
This Heat - Deceit
I love watching Mikael's interview , he seems so peaceful and badass at the same time, love it
I don't care what anyone says, as far as I am concerned the Blackwater Park record is an absolute MASTER PIECE!!!!
Ghost Reveries and Pale Communion are both masterpieces
Faceculture - asking the real questions :)
Yeah man, I'm impressed by the quality of questions and depth of Faceculture interviews.
Very insightful interview and I think Sorceress is a step in the right direction for them
the pain in his face when he says his children don't recognize him after returning from tour :c I hope he feels better now
The best kind of ASMR
Thank you FaceCulture for asking questions that are actually interesting. This is why I will subscribe right now. :)

I really do love your interviews! Such a good ones!
Thank you, for those kind words :)
My Arms Your Hearse and Blackwater Park are their masterpieces to me....Still Life is close but not on the same level.
I can sense a little burn out.
Good questions!
I'd say Ghost Reveries was pretty damn close to a masterpiece. Next is Still Life.
I know Opeth has so many great albums and songs but Morningrise deserves some love too like cmon ppl, I mean Black Rose Immortal is one of the greatest songs ever written
Blackwater Park ist der masterpiece
Vergess mir ja nicht Ghost Reveries.
“I’m one of those guys who listens to Signals” yeah that’s a good one, but I’m more of a Moving Pictures guy myself, Mikael

The Wilde Flowers is beyond great and Strange Brew is basically one of the 3 best tracks from Mikael since the "new style began".
if Orchid
, Morningrise, My Arms, Your Hearse or Still Life isn't a masterpiece THEN there is no such thing as masterpiece - by any band.
He's starting to get tired of it all
I'm not surprised, frankly. All the normal pressures and sacrifices of having a band along with horribly vitriolic ex fans endlessly criticising their creative decisions. So brutal. I hope he does some side project stuff with Swanö or Wilson again. As long as he keeps making music, I'm happy.

Maybe Mikael should retire from touring and doing Opeth full time and just focus on producing. I think he'd be a pretty in demand producer.
I actually think that is a good idea. He always explains how he loves writing music but sees Touring as his 'Job'.
I'm not in the music industry but I think record contracts demand a certain amount of records and shows in a certain time period. It's not like Opeth are financially independent like Metallica.
I BET MIKAEL WILL READ THIS BECAUSE HE IS VAIN AF!
I will also add that i am a big fan. lol

@@michaelhudson2912 As a huge Opeth fan I would like to back you up on this. :)
Mikael is a musician, not an antertainer. He doesn´t owe anything to his fans
