Hi, I joined this parts from the Watershed DVD when Mikael Akerfeldt and Frederik Akesson grabed their guitar and started to play. Hope you enjoyed it! \m/
One thing I like about this band is their capability to transition from the most ruthless and heaviest passage in a song, to an emotional one. Also, Mikael is truly gifted when it comes to songwriting.
It’s even in the Yen/Yang logo for Opeth. From the O itself, to the organic flowing foliage and the spiked harsh lettering. I would only say that they don’t transition from heavy to emotion, since heavy is an emotion itself. They transition from brutal, evil, harsh and sporadic, to pillowy earthen ethereal winding offshoots. I think Dirge For November is one of their finest songs to showcase that transition. It has an almost ambient romantic autumnal section, that is slashed open by one of the most demonic sounding tunes they’ve ever made. Opeth is one of a kind for sure
@@mellowtron214 Good catch, I noticed the Yen/Yang logo when I finally saw them live in CPH for some reason haha. Maybe bcoz I had a huge O in my face :D
Watershed has some of Opeth's heaviest riffs. You can also tell that, all due respect to Peter, Fredrik's skill level caused Mikael to improve his chops a bit to keep up
Peter Lindgren’s solos were really great too, idk why Mikael says Peter was not creative when he actually wrote some really good solos in Deliverance & Damnation.
Mikael has a very classic prog rock style of soloing. Reminds me of Andy lattimer. His greatest attribute is the notes he chooses to fill his solos with. He seems to pick the notes perfectly for each one. Akesson is a phenomenal soloist. He’s got a very classic metal shred style. You can tell he listened to schenker and metal when he started playing. I’m not a huge fan of his watershed solos but he really has became a phenomenal player with recent prog opeth releases. He adopted this wonderful jazzy fusion style mixed with some metal attitude that really works well. They’re both great. Akesson is a much better guitar player than lingren ever was too.
@@nicolausteslaus If you watch the mini documentary; "The making of Deliverance and Damnation" he says something in the line of: "I write all the songs, the basic stuff, but if they want to change something I want to hear what they have to say." It is also very prominent that he doesn't write all the solos
@@IvanIvanov-qx5oz Yep, he's talking about getting his songwriting ideas across as easily as possible and not fucking around with tech. It's funny how This guy got 90 upvotes from people and none of them understood what he was saying.
Holy shit. Listening to some of these riffs being played on acoustic really gives them some definition. Sounds a lot more interesting without all the distortion.
Same way I feel about Ghost. It has me left me knowing I could never make music that's any better. Coincidentally, Fredrik plays guitars on Ghosts new record, Impera. It's amazing work.
Hex Omega has to be one of my favourite Opeth songs of all time... so magestic and enigmatic (reminds me of Porcupine Tree's song "Dark Matter"). I love the new direction Opeth took. It was weirder and so organic. When I finally grew accustomed to it, it was truly rewarding.
I could watch a whole fucking show of this. Mike on acoustic and vocals, and Fred shredding on the electric. It's raw, it's powerful, and it proves that even if you strip down Opeth songs to their core - they are fucking incredible. Great songwriting. Great fucking band.
This is fucking rock writing. Totally out of the regular shapes and approaches. This is why Opeth and Mickael are the most legit, true songwriters of todays rock music. Not too many bands can even touch this shit in terms of "truth". Let's go with the new album already :))
Thanks to the folks at Sheet Happens for transcribing the riffs for all the songs on this record along with edits and approval by Mike and Fredrik. Can't wait to dive in and learn them all!
Exactly 10-11 years ago, I accidentally came across this video. This was my first introduction to metal genre and electric guitar in general. I started with Opeth, never turned back, now I'm a metalhead. I've never found a song that's unbearable (most people would find it horrifying), because again, I started with Death Metal 😂🤦🏻♂️
Dude, these parts from the dvd were my favourate parts just seeing them so chilled out and jamming stuff off their new record. I was praying so badly that they would do the same thing on the making of "Heritage", but they didn´t =( still love the band though, traveled last month from Portugal to Sweden to watch them live xD hehe
This album has the best guitar riffs ever!! Mikael's riffing and Åkessons soloing is an unbeatable combination. Will forever be my favourite Opeth album and favourite period!!!!
i could listen to that harmony from burden all day, its beautiful. and personally I like it more in this video without the drums and keyboard than on the actual record
Frederick is one of my soloists. He’s super technical, but he actually writes interesting guitar solos that work with the song rather then just shredding as possible all the time. Mikael’s solo’s just have so much soul, and he is honestly the greatest composer in the history of the genre.
I’m just now realizing that my favorite parts to drum along with off Watershed, are all the acoustic/electric sections and the solos. Heir Apparent has some of the tastiest bits off that record.
@masterfly Yeah, I love his playing, so amazing and technical but approachable, too. I'm also eyeballing his PRS singnature guitar ... really sweet axe.

You pretty much summed up what Opeth are as a band.

Meshuggah is god
I'm not sure how this album didn't win metal or prog album of the year. It's so good.
Mikael one of the most underrated songwriters of all time.
Fredrik's style in Opeth is incredible.
"I had a crayfish party once" is a sentence only ever spoken in Sweden
Frederik's solos are impressive, but Mikael's are easily my favorite.
He's got a great bluesy vibe. Wish he'd solo more often nowadays.
Peter Lindgren’s solos were really great too, idk why Mikael says Peter was not creative when he actually wrote some really good solos in Deliverance & Damnation.

zero tolerance he does not write Frederik’s solos

Fredrik is so technical and yet he's still passionate. What an amazing guitarist.
*Plays Heir Apparent*
"I'm not a technical guy"
I think he was talking about the tech as in the equipment

He is so f***in humble 😃 with all his talent 🎸

Evil major chords 2:38
The most interesting part of it
The arabic influences are what makes Opeth such amazing artists
I love how Opeth uses so many major chords. Mikael Akerfeldt is a Swedish musical God.
Mikael Åkerfeldt is a fucking geunius! he is veeery talented! damn!
Watching this makes me wonder If I will ever truely understand what it means to make beautiful music...
Let´s just appreciate it buddy! ;)

love that prs sound you can play everything with prs jazz to metal
I am blown away by these guys....

this video explains a lot why I think Watershed is one of the best, if not the best album from Opeth.

@@michaeldeel1592 oh nice
5:03 may very well be my favorite Opeth riff of all time and that's saying a lot because I love ALL their riffs!
Whoever disliked this should have their internet license revoked immediately.
Sigh. We need more Mikaels in this world. Such an AMAZING musician and vocalist!
Mikael is one of the most musically gifted guitar players/singers I've ever heard. Watershed is a masterpiece IMO!
Wow... 5:03 even behind the scenes, no one to impress, they are still so razor sharp.

seeing Fred & Mike playing is better than sex
Amazing how locked in both of these guys are, perfect unison…
I love Opeth heavy riffs and the chill acoustic stuff too!
This solo by Fredrik has become one of my favorites of all time, the way ends it with the ascending bends is absolute witchcraft!
The riff at 5:02 is just ridiculous!
This album has the best guitar riffs ever!! Mikael's riffing and Åkessons soloing is an unbeatable combination. Will forever be my favourite Opeth album and favourite period!!!!
WHAT A FUCKIN HEAVY RIFF
i could listen to that harmony from burden all day, its beautiful. and personally I like it more in this video without the drums and keyboard than on the actual record
every Opeth is a masterpiece
Fredriks tone is insane
I love their very unique sounding guitar solos and acoustic rhythms. :))

You can just feel how much emotion these dudes put into their music.
Great period of Opeth. !
This is pure gold. Thanks for uploading!

it's amazing their live rehearsal takes sound as good as their actual recordings. how many other bands can do this?
This video is incredibly beautiful and having all main riffs and solos of their best album ever !
It's on my Iphone :-)

1:23 - one of the best things Mikael has ever written in any instrument.
so much inspiration.
6:56 Fred goes nervous tourettes

The best music on the planet, indeed!
"That's a fun riff". Jesus that was AWESOME not fun...

"How to make your major chords sound dark and evil" by Mikael Akerfeldt \m/
Morbid Angel shirt.... obvious! love it!!!
Fredrik is such a cool dude, great playing too. Fits Opeth well imo.
4:49 this is beautiful. genial, awesome! Great Frederik
thanks a lot ! i appreciate it !
How the fuuuck do you write shit like they do!?!? CRAZY!
Mikael makes me realize that song writing is not something you can learn. You either have it or you dont, he's a musical genius.
Chris Garr This album has no genius moments IMO, even thought it's still pretty good.
EricMetalhead are you sure? i think the songs hex omega and hessian peel have a powerfull riffs
Claudio Alba Not genius though
EricMetalhead The Lotus Eater, Hex Omega and Heir Apparent are fantastic songs. I'd go as far as to say I prefer this album to Ghost Reveries.
It's very difficult choose one album! x)
@masterfly Yeah, I love his playing, so amazing and technical but approachable, too. I'm also eyeballing his PRS singnature guitar ... really sweet axe.
Gorgeous PRS :B
Seeing these guys at the Sydney Opera House tomorrow - can't fucking wait!!!
Watching this I'm always amazed how perfectly they play together, like they're mentally linked or something.

@arthunter888 it's on the minute 1:32 of the song "Hex Omega", song number 7 of the album.
@Pepez121 No I was saying that the riff at 5:04 in this video here is the riff at 6:30 in the actual song Hessian Peel.
FUCK ! i can't stop watching it over and over again...
