    Good review that covered things missed by other youtubers like the max weight which many never even think about but is important if you intend going 2 up touring and why you'd chose ESA etc. I'm not in the market for a new bike as I'm picking 1 up next month but found this interesting non the less.

    Fair review and having owned my XR from February you've hit the nail on the head with the minor niggles of prop stand height (fixed with an enlarger), very strong front brake and suspension comments. If you want to flat foot it you may need as I did to go for a factory-lowered suspension AND low seat (giving 775 mm) but bear in mind you then have to forgo ESA and centre stand options.
    However as with your own Honda, I love this bike which now needs to get back on the road as soon as 'riding for pleasure' is permitted in the UK!

      @@Englishbikerdan Look forward to that. In my case the workshops need to reopen also to do my 600m service! I suppose one other thing worth saying is that while the blipper is lovely the shifter somewhat clunks in the lower gear change ups (funny how the dealer always says that's normal or will improve with the miles) so people shouldn't expect it to be like say the S1000R.

    This looks promising, but If I have to choose between this XR and Tracer GT, I would go for Tracer 900 GT for the cheaper price. Both have similiar performance, power-to-weight ratio etc. And the XR doesn't come with autocruise and quickshifter (unless you go for TE). Credit to BMW for great design tho

  • @vincentcausey8498
    @vincentcausey8498 4 роки тому +2

    From what I have seen, it is hard to choose between this and the Tracer 900. They both have their pluses. I would say, for the Tracer, the engine seems more exciting, but maybe the suspension on the BMW are better, the TFT and brakes are definately better. If you are doing mainly Sunday afternoon rides, and the occasional weekend or 5 day hack, I wonder which is the best choice? I'm honestly stuck.

    Interesting on the seat height. I tried one yesterday and initially had the same issue and I know I’m the same height and inseam as you Dan. Then I realised if I out my feet behind the pegs which felt weird the I could flat foot it. Coming off a bike with more rear set pegs this wasn’t intuitive. Also found the sides and was about 3 inches to short meaning the bike leans like a certain famous tower and is much heavier to get upright when manoeuvring. Still raeally
    wanted one tho.

    Hi Dan, always on a lookout for your reviews so glad you've managed to get your hands on this totally new beemer. Question: this f900xr or honda cb650r (yes, I know you have it) or cbr650r or street triple r... or ktm 790 duke? I ride 2009 street triple and is lots of fun but now I am thinking of something new(er). I want a city bike but a joy to ride in the twisties with some touring once in a while. I am short and slim so all big ADVs are not for me, and the mid range are kind of boring (Tiger, VStrom, etc). Tracer 700 looks interesting but I saw vids they are rusting away since new. And now this new F900XR gets me thinking... so I'd appreciate your thoughts on the subject. Thanks, cheers, Robert.

    This is an older video, but I just wanted to comment about the low end grunt you mentioned being less than you expected: I've got a 900xr and have the pro riding modes. The way that road mode behaves with throttle response makes it feel quite lazy low down, but in dynamic mode (or dynamic pro if you have it setup that way), you get all the beans at the low end, albeit it makes it kinda twitchy to ride. You touched on some great points though! It's a lovely bike.

      You're right that dynamic mode makes a difference as it brings the bike alive, I ride in it all the time unless it's raining, I've never found it twitchy though. Dynamic mode should come as standard, not an optional extra, although it does add IMU to the bike as well so I guess that isn't cheap.

    It is a great looking bike. Having ridden the Tracer 900GT I would take allot of convincing to buy the BMW over the Yam, mainly because the Tracer is a proven reliability wise. Good to see BMW haven't gone keyless with the bike. What does annoy me about the BMW, especially one designed to tour is lack of spray suppression at the back. Loads of manufacturers do it, you ride on wet roads and then get a disgusting line of mud and crap up your or your passenger's back.

    • @Englishbikerdan
      @Englishbikerdan  4 роки тому +1

      Not sure what spray would be like for the pillion. Might be ok as stock but if you want a tail tidy it's going to be very messy. I've had a bad experience with reliability of Yamaha's so I'd choose this over the Tracer. I don't like the look of the Tracer either. It has benn explained again and again that in a motorcycle, the weight distribution affects a lot more the rear than the front, hence is no need for adjustment at the front, and new bike in general have excellent suspension from factory, there is no need to adjust front suspension, and matter of fact, people that adjust them most of the time they made it worse.

    I found the engine breaking a bit disconcerting coming from an in-line 4. Had a tendency to nose dive when backing off the throttle 😬

      Yeah those parallel twins have a heap of engine braking.

    Don’t like the bike at all. Seems like a bike my dad would ride... an old man’s bike in my opinion. Nice review tough , I’m liking those numbers on the screen,Dan 👍 very comprehensive 😎

      I must be an old man. 😂 It felt pretty decent and would be great on a long tour.

      Ha yes I would agree .....problem is my son wud say the same, but then again I'm 30 years older than him therefore what he rides and what suits me at my age are different ..... If you fast forward your life by a couple of decades then ul think differently about this bike ....presently I have a 765 triumph which is great but I cud do with a tourer in my garage .....this ticks all the boxes .....when you get to be a bit older things have a habit of changing ....stay safe and enjoy n keep ur looking out for all the loonies on the road 👍

      I've ordered one of these for training. It will compliment my Tracer as both bikes have an upright riding position and well suited for low speed riding and looking well ahead past the student in a training situation. Lovely bike, well designed and well finished. The "dad bike" thing is typical anti-BMW prejudice. It is nothing of the sort. It's a typical modern motorcycle. It just isn't to your taste, but then, it's my taste that matters as it's my money on the table.

      @@Pisceanboi Unfortunately, BMW seems to attract haters who want to justify their dislike with nonsense. I expect other marques get the same.

    I think it leans over a lot more on the stand so they didn't have to put a shorter one on the lower suspension bike
    I had the lower suspension 2018 BMW GS adventure
    and they did nothing to change the size of the side stand meaning that it was almost impossible to use because in fact the bike so straight that there was any bit of a lean to the right the bike would fall over the other way
    I have no idea why BMW makes lower suspension bikes but can't spend the money to make at different size side stand
    sure that's what's going on here
    your bike leans over too far and the lower suspension bike will probably not lean over far enough
    also that they don't have to make two different size side stand
    seems very odd

    Once the current situation is over, people need to seriously consider where their money is spent. China needs to be punished for what they have inflicted on the world. The economy of the western world has been decimated and could well take a decade to recover. As with many others i will be boycotting Chinese products in favor of British /European manufacture. This will include those western companies (Listen up BMW)that use substantial components in premium brands for cost cutting purpose. This will include this bike with a cheap Chinese parallel twin engine. Dont be fooled anymore into paying premium prices for a so called premium brand full of Chinese components so that they can take their customers as mugs and rip them off.

      It is just the engine assembly not entire bike and yeah i hope they coulda merge with husqvarna 😒😒 but nah engine is a blooping hit on the 850gs in india so i trust that engine 👍👍👍 you know indian conditions can melt the engine inside out and bulletproof quality is required for a bike to gain its market plot and f850gs is best off roader and perfect budget tourer in india
